This book is a collection of poems selected from 40 years of writing. The science of poetry is to translate the intangible thinking of the right brain into a familiar left brain world of matter. Love as a Way of Knowing
Between 1944 and 1963 the author was born into and grew up in the literal and violent Jim Crow culture and spirit within the Mississippi Delta. In all matters of life and death within this Jim Crow world, white males were its interpreters of spiritual and secular rules, their interpretations, and implementations. This worldview was fluid and often implemented through literal and occasionally violent and deadly means by white folks who set examples for all sub-cultures such as black folks. Those examples and both spoken and written words from and by white males to black folks defined the parameters of what, when, how or whether most black folks had rights to white male-definitions of life, and poverty. For many black males it was understood that the Old Testament of the Bible was the unspoken and clearly understood overarching spiritual source of religiosity for all and passed down from white men to black males and preachers in particular. In a similar manner, the white superintendent dominated all aspects of the towns and its surrounding area's education through his control of the black superintendent. It was implicitly understood in my home that the source of all these beliefs and feelings was the Old Testament of the Bible and that "God was a wrathful God." In short, God did not tolerate any form or kind of sin. In the black home, the male was the dominant figure and his primary responsibility was to enforce "the white man's rule" to the best of his abilities, and that was usually limited by his education and mental capacities. An ignorant black male with limited to no education, intelligence, compassion or lack thereof, was a serious concern in any home. If that person was ignorant, mentally challenged, and violent, the lives of the lady of the house and their children may be in a state of constant danger. The author grew up within this kind of home and environment and this is his story.

An anthology of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry written by San Francisco Bay Area seniors who have participated in classes as a part of the Litquake Foundation's Elder Project. This anthology features work from some of the participants in workshops, classes, or storytelling sessions between the Summer of 2022 and Fall of 2023. This is writing from 33 writers who are residents and attendees across all of the sites we serve as of 2023: Cayuga Connectors and Life Remembered at Bethel Church through the Community Living Campaign, Downtown Oakland Senior Center, Dr. George Davis Senior Center, and the San Francisco Campus for Jewish Living. In this anthology, you'll read about the kid who, on a drive through bucolic '60s Tennessee, gets a matter-of-fact lesson in racism from his dapper Uncle Roy. You'll meet a Jewish youth assigned a Nazi to tutor him in German in the late '40s, a story told in sly deadpan. In the '50s, a girl parked with her boyfriend on a runway is interrupted in their make-out session by the sudden shriek of a military jet. Dancing ensues.A lot of dancing appears in this collection-as does love, for friends, partners (those alive and those gone), dogs, cats, horses, and the sight of moonlight at 5 a.m. Parents continue to confound the writers, a half-century after they left home. (As D. Fromm writes: "Semi-waking, semi-sleeping, I was visited by mom / who said that her grave didn't look finished聶") You'll hear about war (WWII, war with Korea, the Cold War, not to mention Star Wars), and rage between spouses (in fiction and nonfiction). You'll travel to Indiana, Coney Island, Japan, and of course our beloved, imperfect Bay Area. Elder Project is a focuses on creative expression for seniors in the community through writing and performances. The project brings teaching artists to the elders in a classroom accessible to them in-person or online. Life’s Wisdom
I have always been intrigued by the power of words. In the course of my engineering and manufacturing career I was fortunate to have a mentor who taught me about the use of vocabulary and how the precise application of just the right word made a difference when expressing a particular thought. I especially appreciated it when a small selection of words came together to make a terse but potent thought. I often applied what I learned resulting in the creation of many what I felt were economic and effective sayings. I also appreciated and took note of sayings by others. Soon I began to amass a collection of these thoughts and sayings. While many are of my own creation, an equal number are the product of other people's wisdom. Those that I liked or identified with were either adopted or adapted. These little gems of wisdom can take many forms depending on the situation. They can be simply an observation about life, a bit of advice, a snappy comeback, a witty remark, a political comment or even an insult. What better way to share these little bits of wisdom than to put them down in a book. The thoughts that are not my own have not been attributed to any other author as they often appear credited to different sources and most have no source at all as they have simply become a part of our collective culture. The reader will note that often there are many variations on the same or similar themes. Each time I chose to apply one of these in a life situation, it often came out a little different depending on the particular application or whatever mood I was in. I have chosen to include nearly all variations. Since I wanted this book to be an interesting read and not simply a boring reference book, I have not categorized or grouped them by topic but listed them in a random fashion so that each one has the potential to be a surprise.
