I'm in Hell and That's Okay
What does a retired florist questioning his own life's purpose, a widower forever-late, a father on the trek of his life, an imprisoned jester, and some poor sod crying in a shed all have in common with you and me? We're all going to die, that's what! (Probably shouldn't have written it so excitedly, but I am excited to think about it.) This book is a series of five short stories that delve into death - accepting it, ignoring it, telling it to keel over and fall face-first into a horse's behind. Not everyone thinks about their life's end in the exact same way, and not everyone reads a book about fictional characters facing it, either. But if you are the sort of person with that delectable taste for morbid curiosity, or even if you just want to wrench some meaning from that inevitable checkmate, this is the book for you.About the Author: My name's Aarav Reddy, and this book was a product of hours and hours of sleepless nights, and more than a few hand cramps. The idea of this book was -quite unwillingly- conceived after I landed in the hospital, severely injured after getting into an accident while crossing the road. The fact that I could've died from something so hopelessly normal translated to a sudden realization, which slipped to fear and distress. To keep from constantly panicking, I wrote this book. Sharing stories has always meant the world to me, I've loved experiencing them since before I can remember: from my father and my grandmother when I was younger, to books and television today- other peoples' stories have offered me perspectives I hadn't ever thought of. This is the fifth book I've written, the first to be published, and now I hope my stories do the same for you, each one a different point of view on something that ties all of us together: our own mortality. Happy reading!

Frankincense, Gold, and Myrrh
For over thirty years, Joseph Bottum has been writing widely acclaimed Christmas essays, columns, short stories, and carols for American magazines and newspapers. Now, for the first time, St. Augustine's Press has gathered a selection of these classic pieces--with a vast range across the Christmas spectrum. There's the comic: "Tinsel. No one needs tinsel. Even the word is a tinselly kind of word." There's the sentimental: "Her hair was the same thin shade of gray as the weather-beaten pickets of the fence around her frozen garden." There's the reminiscent: "Christmas was books, and books Christmas, in those days now mostly washed down to the cold sea." Along the way, there's the theological, the learned, the mystical, and the musical. "Tastefulness is just small-mindedness pretending to be art," he writes in praise of mad and cluttered holidays. "Christmas will not be defined by our failures to apply its lessons and carols," he explains about Yuletide poetry. To see these essays and short stories gathered in one place--in a beautiful illustrated edition from St. Augustine's Press--is to see the whole of the vision that Joseph Bottum has been painting for decades: a picture of Christmas as a thin place in the wall between the natural and the numinous, where a burning grace slips into a cold winter world.
Tales from the South West Coast Path
It was 2008 when the author took the first intrepid steps from Minehead, in Somerset, heading for Poole in Dorset, six hundred and thirty miles away. Walking the path was a meditation, with nothing to think about except facing and overcoming the challenges presented day by day, whether by the terrain or the weather. Even in the most remote and inaccessible places she felt safe and at one with the land. They gave her the space and the silence to explore and develop the stories that were taking shape in her mind. When asked for the genre of these tales, Jo explained they were like the contents of those bags of sweets called 'Lucky Bags' that she was passionate about as a child. Like those bags, this is a 'Lucky Bag of Tales' - a mixture of gruesome murder, ghostly tales, sentient landscapes and wartime dramas. It was the landscape that dictated the sort of story needing to be told. Some of the stories embrace the dark side of religion and spiritual beliefs. Yet others are of the genre magical realism where creatures, usually invisible to humankind, make themselves known to those open to the possibility of their reality. The places in which these twenty eight stories are set, are factual. The people, however, are fictitious. That is fortunate because you really wouldn't want to meet any of them on some of the more remote sections of the path. At the end of each story, there is additional information and explanation about the origins of the tale. These have been added for interest and background information. This collection of stories will inform and entertain, not only walkers on the path, but also those open to exploring the hidden realms of human existence through the landscape. Perhaps they will entice the reader to walk at least some sections of this amazing long distance trail. If they do, please stay vigilant, for now that the characters have been given life in these stories, they will live in the landscape forever. The stories in this book were originally published in four separate volumes and for those only interested in one section of the path, these are still in publication.

Sitting on a Park Bench
Robi and Vic, two old friends, are sitting on a park bench on a misty fall evening, munching nuts and reminiscing. The smell of jasmine in the chilly fall air suddenly reminds Robi of their university days, many moons ago. A floodgate of memories of this time of their lives, when 'life held promise and powers felt indefatigable, ' opens up. Who was the mysterious creature they had seen in the Gymkhana late night after the concert of '87? Who ratted them out after they crashed into the social event illegally held on university premises one evening? What started the infamous mess wars that drove such a rift through campus? The past becomes the present and the two compatriots go through their own remembrance of things past, while the sinister syndicate and the feared disciplinary committee loom over every encounter.
Unexpected Endings
There are said to be two types of writers: those who meticulously plot their stories before ever setting pen to paper, and those who dive headfirst into a blank page, trusting that meaning will emerge through the process. I firmly belong to the latter group. When I began writing proper short stories - rather than scribbles on the backs of bus tickets - I never imagined they would one day form a collection. But as the stories accumulated, I realized there might be enough to satisfy the growing number of readers who had enjoyed them and were eager for more. My imagination is a restless and untamed force, often pulling me in unexpected directions, making each story a new adventure in creativity. I delight in experimenting with words, stretching and reshaping them into fresh contexts. Unexpected Endings is driven by this love of storytelling, blending my interests in science and folklore - two endless sources of inspiration. In this collection, you'll find stories like Azrael, where a goldfinch holds far more meaning than meets the eye, and Light and Dark, where nothing is quite what it seems.

No Refuge
"Ripples of Drunkard's Walk by Frederick Pohl, Brian Garfield's rough and tumble prose, and the Argentine originality of Ang矇lica Gorodischer, make Nolta's collection something to admire. A true range of styles and talents."- Dr. Walker Zupp, author of Wittgenstein Fiction "Brandon makes his characters play hide and seek with people who aren't there and then turns their loneliness into a survival game. You never know which sheep can bite like a wolf. His world knows no predictions. The only certainty you will encounter is that the story goes on. That is a very valuable gift as rare as performing technical service to a virtual family living on a computer - you'll get it when you read the book."- Mr. W., author of The Craziest Book Ever Written "Brandon Nolta's stories are always a pleasure to read and his anthology, No Refuge, is no exception. From the harrowing journey in "Cloudbreaker Above" to the mythical beasts of "In the Forests and the Wilds" each story takes you on adventures through many fantastical landscapes and shows you visions of the weird in our own world that you might only catch glimpses of from the corner of an eye. Nolta's ability to blend the extraordinary with the human experience makes this collection a must-read."- Jessica Augusstson, editor, JayHenge Publishing

Divine Hiddenness
The Bible tells us God has revealed Himself using stories. This book, using stories, explains why God has hidden himself. For most of us, we would like to see God reveal Himself more than He does. Each story, letter, or parable in this book shines light on a different corner of God's genius for not revealing Himself. This book will challenge you to think with each character as they discover that the world is a more dazzling and magical place than any human could have anticipated. The stories will draw you in with their creativity and variety, but they will have you rereading them for the life-changing truths locked inside. Nathan Glover is the Director of the Urban Impact Training Center in Pittsburgh. He studied history, theology and apologetics at Grove City College, Trinity Anglican Seminary and Oxford University. The three biggest influences in his life are the Oxford Inklings, his inner-city upbringing and his very large family. He is husband to a beautiful wife and father to four wonderful kids. Nathan speaks all over the United States on Purpose, Evangelism and Apologetics.
Our Colony Beyond the City of Ruins
In Our Colony Beyond the City of Ruins, an insomniac will do anything for sleep, crones released from a buried heart take over a town, a woman chooses to live her last days in a cave overlooking the sea, earthquake survivors establish a colony in a remote forest. With unwavering imagination and heart, Janalyn Guo delivers a cast of characters who find their own unusual ways to endure. "These stories take the gestures of new wave fabulism and make it newer and even more wavy, by being genuinely international. Here's a book that shivers with possibility and wonder and surprise, where plants grow from people's bodies, where ghosts exist even before someone is dead. Guo isn't afraid to take on even the thoroughly weird in the most delightful way. This is what it's like to see a genre revivified."-Brian Evenson "OUR COLONY BEYOND THE CITY OF RUINS is an absolute delight, a wild collection that unsettles as much as it entertains. Guo shows an impressive range and deep emotional intelligence--this is a rare book of both strangeness and heart."-Kelly Luce
