Thematic Chess Training
THEMATIC CHESS TRAININGBOOK 5 - ATTACKS ON CASTLINGThe exercises in this book illustrate typical castling attacks, in their final phase, usually with a combinatorial result. Small castling attacks were studied in Chapter 8 of Chess School and then in the extensive Chapter 7 of Chess School 2.Of course, the topic of castling is also extensively developed in the three books of the Encyclopedia of Tactics, soon to be published by Editora Solis (Technique of mate combination, School of tactics and The attack in chess), duly organized by topic, with numerous diagrams and exercises.Students should bear in mind that, when solving the exercises, they are not asked to decipher each and every move in the game (which are sometimes included right to the end, for documentary purposes), but only those that, say, lead to a decisive advantage for one side (+ -, - +) or forced draws (=), where appropriate. There are exceptions (and in this sense, the guidance of an instructor, or the reader's own common sense, is important), because if the first move or two produce this opinion, it is worth waiting for the solver to provide additional concrete lines that enrich the solution. Chess is not a mathematical science and allows for different interpretations.Only one formula is known for progressing in chess: play as many games as possible, together with theoretical study and analysis of the games themselves. The ideal complement to this formula is, as many great masters recommend, for the player to develop and perfect their tactical and strategic skills by solving numerous exercises, specially selected for their usefulness. Thematic Chess Training
THEMATIC CHESS TRAININGBOOK 4 - TACTICAL ENDINGSWe call those endgames tactical in which the struggle, usually technical, of this last phase of the game is influenced by threatened kings, or by combinatorial sequences to promote a pawn, exploit a certain advantage, or discover a surprising saving maneuver. In other words, endgames in which tactical play predominates, because they involve sacrifices or uncharacteristic combinatorial elements, when there are few pieces left in the game. The School of Chess manuals (1 and 2) don't study tactical endgames as such, but when studying combinatorial figures (chapters 5 and 7 of SC, chapter 2 of SC 2) they include several examples that can be catalogued as such. In any case, this is not a technical topic that is studied systematically in textbooks, but this book is more than justified by its considerable practical value: the positions will give the chess student a greater perspective and insight when facing endgames with similar ideas (which here are very varied and, in many cases, very original).Only one formula is known for progressing in chess: play as many games as possible, together with theoretical study and analysis of the games themselves. The ideal complement to this formula is, as many great masters recommend, for the player to develop and perfect their tactical and strategic skills by solving numerous exercises, specially selected for their usefulness. Thematic Chess Training
THEMATIC CHESS TRAININGBOOK 1 - OPENING PROBLEMSChess openings always sow an element of intrigue and suspense. What will our opponent play? How can we take advantage of our position? What surprises and unpredictable moves await us at the end of each variant? In Chess School (1 and 2) attention is paid to openings, within the limited space available in generic manuals. In Chess School 2 there are two chapters: the first (The game in the opening) and the ninth (The repertoire of openings), the latter giving us a glimpse of the theoretical panorama, with some new ideas and, above all, the design of a repertoire, according to each player's individual style. Once the player has opted for a tailor-made repertoire, their task will consist of studying the openings they have decided to adopt, delving into them, and taking note of the novelties that are produced at each step. This certainly requires clarification. A theoretical novelty is that new move that high competition (or, as we said before, masterly practice) endorses and ratifies. A novelty is just a new move, an experiment whose merits and flaws have yet to be confirmed by competitive practice.Only one formula is known for progressing in chess: play as many games as possible, along with theoretical study and analysis of the games themselves. The ideal complement to this formula is, as many great masters recommend, for the player to develop and perfect their tactical and strategic skills by solving numerous exercises, specially selected for their usefulness. Thematic Chess Training
THEMATIC CHESS TRAININGBOOK 2 - SPECTACULAR COMBINATIONSThe great chess teachers have always agreed on one thing: solving numerous combinatorial exercises (hundreds or even thousands) is the best way to broaden your tactical vision and to be able to create combinations in competitive chess. The exercises in this booklet illustrate the combinatorial themes studied in chapters 5 and 7 of Chess School, which are also covered in chapter 3 (Combinatorial figures) of Chess School 2. Players wishing to broaden their knowledge of tactical themes can consult the books Technique of mate combination and School of chess tactics.Only one formula is known for progressing in chess: play as many games as possible, together with theoretical study and analysis of the games themselves. The ideal complement to this formula is, as many great masters recommend, for the player to develop and perfect their tactical and strategic skills by solving numerous exercises, specially selected for their usefulness. Perceptions of East Asian and Asian North American Athletics
This book highlights inconsistencies within the field of sports scholarship and provides an opportunity to open up and extend conversations about the intersection of sports media and race - particularly surrounding athletes of East Asian descent. Despite the growing influence of East Asian and Asian American/Canadian athletes, they are still underrepresented in Western media and in scholarship. This anthology adds much-needed literature to sports, popular culture, East Asian, and Asian American studies. The prominence of sports in global popular culture makes the intersections explored in this collection a crucial addition to existing conversations about both sports and East Asian/Asian American/Canadian studies.
Placebo Effects in Sport and Exercise
Placebo effects have been recognised by medicine and by science, yet only recently has systematic research begun to fully understand what they are and how they work. Sport and exercise scientists started systematic research to better understand the potential performance-enhancing effects of placebos as well as how a range of treatments are used in sport, from nutritional supplements to psychological interventions to sports medicine treatments. Placebo Effects in Sport and Exercise synthesises this field of research of the influence placebo effects have in sport and exercise. This book brings together many of the world's leading and emerging placebo effect researchers to help readers gain an understanding of core research findings from within sports and exercise science as well as sport and exercise-related contributions from experts in anthropology, medicine, and neuroscience. Readers will gain an insight of what placebo and nocebo effects are, how they might influence sport and exercise performance and outcomes, and how they might significantly influence the effectiveness of performance and health interventions. The book investigates various practical and ethical implications for the sport and exercise practitioner, student, and researcher to consider. Can a placebo work if the athlete knows it's a placebo? Should practitioners use placebos to enhance performance? Can the use of placebos reduce doping? Are some sports medicine treatments little more than placebos? With the rapid growth of applied sports medicine, as well as the concept of exercise as a mental health treatment in its own right, Placebo Effects in Sport and Exercise is key reading for students and researchers of sport psychology as well as those out in the field.

Beyond the Jumbotron
A simple guidebook for navigating the new world of sports marketing and brand managementThe modern consumer, today's fan, is no longer passive. Over three quarters of millennials say they prefer experiences over traditional advertising. Old approaches won't work. Yard barkers handing out free towels. A stadium plastered with billboards. Maybe a new Jumbotron. Today's fan is looking for something more engaging, more interactive, and more immersive.Industry pioneer, James Giglio, the founder of MVP Interactive, takes us through his fascinating decade-long journey, starting out with a vision for immersive experiences, well before anyone had ever heard of virtual reality. Over that time, he has had the opportunity to work with many leading sports teams, professional leagues, advertising agencies, and consumer brands, to completely redefine the fan experience and now he shares those lessons with us.James also takes us through his own personal story of building a startup, from growing up as a daydreaming kid in Ocean County, New Jersey, to working with an advertising agency in New York and recognizing that three themes were emerging: the iPhone app explosion, the increased use of digital signage or so-called "street furniture," and the emergence of "pop up events" by leading brands. He began to wonder how these three trends could be brought together. What if the immersive technology on our iPhone could be brought to the streetscape? What if those digital displays could become interactive? And what if brands could attract consumers to them rather them just hawking them promotions and free stuff? The result was MVP Interactive. But like any startup, there were bumps along the way and James' story is a heartfelt, honest tale of making many... let's just say, learning a lot of lessons along the way.The timing could not be better. Post Covid, events are back and back big. During the pandemic, we all went fully remote and realized it was just way too much screentime. But we are also not going back to the way it was. Beyond the Jumbotron lies a new, hybrid world where human interaction and technology combine. James takes us through not only the why -- the dramatic changes in consumer attitudes and behavior that are driving the adoption of immersive technology, but more importantly the how -- how to bring these projects to life and lead to real, measurable result after case study and shows the possibilities of new technology are not only endless, but also just the beginning. lts for sports properties and brands. James and his team at MVP Interactive have completed over 200 immersive technology projects and the book is filled with case study after case study and shows the possibilities of new technology are not only endless, but also just the beginning.
International Perspectives on Sport for Sustainable Development
This book brings together examples and cases from across the world to discuss how sport has and can further contribute to the UN 2030 Sustainable Development agenda. It discusses the major steps that international bodies have taken so far and can further take in the progressive integration of sport for sustainable development. Contributors from 21 countries take up at least one of the 17 UNO Sport for Development and Peace goals, and present and analyse examples of national, regional or local policies using sport as a lever for sustainable development. From traditional games to major competitions, from gender equality to social development and developing governmental transparency, the chapters showcase diverse experiences and demonstrate that sport is today much more than just physical activity. This book is based on the network of the International Research Network in Sport Tourism (IRNIST) with the collaboration of Sport 4 Impact. It is the first step of a collaboration between universities and the world of associations working in partnership with organizations such as the UN or the European Union. My Best Games - 1924-1937
This book presents the best games from the period between 1924 and 1937 of the fourth world champion, Alexander Alekhine, selected and analyzed by himself. The games form a collection of extraordinary richness, demonstrating the refinement, originality, and depth of Alekhine's analysis. We can observe in detail his clear and aggressive style in the best moments of his career, including the anthological match against Capablanca in Buenos Aires in 1927, when he won the world title."Typical of Alekhine were his deep plans, distant calculations, and unlimited imagination. His greatest weapon was his combinatorial vision, calculating variants with great ease and precision. Alekhine's combinations possessed an astonishing and demolishing force." - Mikhail BotvinnikIt contains a 65-page appendix with biographical notes on Alekhine's opponents in this book.

A Mirror of the Jewish Religion: A Critical Edition and Translation of Christian Petter L繹we's "Speculum Religionis Judaic疆" (1732)
In 1732, Christian Petter L繹we, a Jewish convert to Lutheranism, published his Speculum Religionis Judaic疆 (Mirror of the Jewish Religion), a description of the Jewish religion and ceremonies as practised at the time. Over 50 years before Jews were permitted to settle in Sweden in 1782, the genre of Christian ethnographical writing about Jews and Jewish rituals had arrived in Sweden from Germany. In this volume, Jonathan Adams (University of Gothenburg) introduces the background to L繹we's "mirror" by looking at both the earlier history of Jews in Sweden and the phenomenon of ethnographical writing about Jews. The text of Speculum is presented in its original Swedish with a translation into English facing on the opposite pages. This edition includes notes explaining technical terms, identifying people and places, and translating Hebrew words and phrases. The volume also includes two works published in Sweden prior to Speculum: Bezelius' Die Herrlichkeit des Christenthums (The Glory of Christianity [excerpts], 1684) and Seeligmann's J羹discher Ceremonien (On Jewish Ceremonies, 1725). The volume should be of interest to students and researchers of Jewish and Scandinavian history as well as the history of Jewish-Christian relations.

Social Issues in Sport, Leisure, and Health
This book examines how social issues shape and influence our engagement with sport, leisure time physical activity, and health-promoting exercise. Connecting the personal with the public, it helps the reader understand how individual exercise, leisure, and sport participation are both facilitated and constrained by their social contexts.Presenting a series of in-depth descriptions of grassroots sport, urban lifestyle sport, physical activity across the life course, sport for children with special needs, and the development of creative climates in sport, this book seeks to encourage what C. Wright Mills described as the "sociological imagination". Every chapter begins with an individual-level account centred on everyday challenges with accessing sport, partaking in leisure activities, and meeting guidelines for daily exercise before exploring the larger, socially determined patterns in which those experiences are located, establishing a vital template for the social scientific study of sport, leisure, and health.Touching on key contemporary themes including diversity, inclusion, health inequalities, and physical inactivity, as well as selection and intensification in sports, this book offers new case material and theoretical tools for understanding the relationships between sport, leisure, health, and the wider society. This is an indispensable companion for any course on the sociology of sport, exercise, leisure, or physical activity and health.
Self-defense or jiu-jitsu achievable by everyone
A brief journey to the roots of Jiu-Jitsu through an important historical record.A book written by the legendary Japanese fighter Mitsuyo Maeda (1878 - 1941), the famous Conde Koma, precursor of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.Mitsuyo Maeda learned the gentle way at the Kodokan, with an instructor directly appointed by Jigoro Kano, the creator of Judo. He received his black belt in 1889, and five years later he left Japan to travel the world demonstrating the effectiveness of his martial art, then called "Kano Jiu-Jitsu".After traveling through Europe, the United States, and Central America, he settled in Brazil in 1917, where he married and taught the precepts of the gentle way. In addition to being one of the first to introduce Judo to Brazil, his work as a teacher in the city of Bel矇m do Par獺, with Carlos Gracie, H矇lio Gracie's brother, as his student, sowed the seeds of what would become Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.This book, written during his time in El Salvador in 1913, gives us a glimpse of his vision, descriptions, and photographic records of various techniques: locks, chokes, projections, and self-defense techniques, as well as his teachings on healthy habits.Self-defense or jiu-jitsu achievable by everyone is a small piece of judo and jiu-jitsu history, inaccessible for decades, now at your fingertips.
Seat, Gaits, and Reactions and the Evolution of the Position of the Rider Through the Ages
Seat, Gaits, and Reactions: Before talking about riding and dressage, Captain de S矇vy studies the gaits of the horse, emphasizing the role of the pendulum-neck. He establishes the link between the horse's movement and the rider's attitude and the corresponding reactions based on his keen observations and analysis of photographic views. In the section devoted to the rider, the author approaches the concept of flexibility by proposing exercises, which we can use today, helping to achieve the independence of the parts of the body and leading to the acquisition of a correct seat, the essential prerequisite for the proper use of the aids. The Equitation chapter presents an analysis of the use of aids, then the use of gaits in the training of the horse and the education of the rider. The proposed dressage progression is centered around two qualities: submission and balance.Evolution of the Position of the Rider Through the Ages: Beginning with Greece and Rome, de S矇vy analyzes the different postures that characterize the major developments in the history of horse riding. He continues from the ancient precepts up to the regulations and guidelines which are still the basis of our teaching today. A short study on the seat prolongs this essential work which allows us to understand the modern methods of taming a horse for riding.

Social Capital and Sport Organisations
Drawing on primary research within voluntary sports clubs in the UK and secondary analysis of the wider international literature on social capital, this text focuses on the micro-processes of social capital development and how they play out in specific social settings. In so doing, it adds to existing research by developing a rich, contextualised, process-based view of social capital in action.Critically reviewing theoretical and empirical literature on social capital, the book highlights the key current debates. The empirical core of the book draws on ethnographic observation over 18 months at voluntary sports clubs in the UK, including in-depth interviews with sports club members and organisers. The text explicitly seeks to set this empirical work in its wider context, by considering the findings in relation to other international studies of social capital in both sports clubs and other types of organisation. The book draws on international research from a whole range of countries: UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Japan, Vanuatu, Czech Republic, Germany, and many others. The book establishes a transferable, process-based understanding of how social capital develops - both within sports clubs and beyond. This is an illuminating reading for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers with an interest in the sociology of sport, sport development, sport management, sport policy, social theory, social policy, or social networks.

Hebron has been researching the brain's connection to learning for over two decades. He attended Harvard's Connecting Mind-Brain to Education Institute, Dr. Eric Jensen's Teaching with the Brain in Mind workshops and spending time with renowned Dr. Robert Bjork at UCLA's Learning Lab; Michael organized the first National PGA of America, Europe, and Canada Teaching and Coaching Summits; a member of World of Golf Teachers Hall of Fame, PGA of America Hall of Fame, recipient of PGA National Teacher of the Year and National PGA Horton Smith Awards. An emphasis is on presenting how the brain responds to these conditions and, for better or worse, how behavior necessarily follows. These ideas are supported in technical vocabulary on research from Cellular, Systems, and Behavioral Neuroscience with an overview of the Brain and Nervous System. The game of Golf is used as an example for any instructional activity. The goal is to improve learning and performance by reducing stress in coaching, teaching, and performing environments. Athlete Transitions Into Retirement
Transitions in sport can be either normative (relatively predictable) or non-normative (less predictable) and are critical times in the development of athlete's careers. Whilst retirement from sport is inevitable, the timing of retirement can be less predictable. If an athlete copes well with the transition they may be better able to adjust to life after sport. However, not coping with the transition can lead to a crisis and negative consequences for the athlete. Transition periods from sport and in particular retirement from sport have been identified as high-risk periods for athletes in terms of psychological distress. However, circumstances surrounding the athlete's retirement are a critical factor in the transition into life after sport. Voluntarily retiring from sport for example, leads to a smoother transition than being forced into retirement through injury or deselection. Research indicates that retirement from sport should be seen as a process rather than a single moment, with many athletes taking up to 2 years to successfully transition out of sport. Currently, there are few bodies of work that are solely devoted to retirement transition. Athlete Transitions into Retirement: Experiences in Elite Sport and Options for Effective Support provides contemporary viewpoints on athlete transitions from elite sport in a global context. This volume is a collaboration of research from leading authors around the world, offering global perspectives to athlete transitions into retirement and is key reading for both researchers and practitioners in the fields of Sport Psychology and Coaching as well as the Athletes themselves.
Improving Gender Equity in Sports Coaching
The sport coaching profession has historically been and continues to be a White male-dominated occupation and this remains a global issue. This imbalance persists despite an improvement in wider social attitudes and legislation towards equality and diversity within many societies, and despite the action by sporting organisations and national governing bodies. Within the research literature, the underrepresentation of women in sport coaching is a well-documented issue with a number of research studies highlighting the experiences and impact of being in the minority for women coaches. The issue of gender inequity in sport coaching is a long-standing one and shows little sign of changing significantly anytime soon. Therefore, a new approach is needed, one that draws on the knowledge and evidence we have to create actionable, sustainable, deep-rooting interventions that challenge the issue of gender equity at its very core. The overall purpose of Improving Gender Equity in Sports Coaching is to take an action or forward-thinking approach about what works, or could work, to improve the recruitment, development, or promotion of women sport coaches. The book brings together a global group of esteemed scholars working in this subject area. In this book, we have brought together not just the insight but also a collection of strategies and recommendations as to how this research could be or has been utilised to make our sport coaching envrionment places where all coaches feel as though they belong. As such, this ground-breaking book is a must read not just for students and researchers of gender equity in sport but also for policy and decision-makers working in sport.
