Reinventing Martial Arts in the 21st Century
Based on over 15 years of research, this text proposes a new definition of the martial arts to examine how such fighting systems are being re-imagined and reconstructed beyond the arenas of combat and sport in the 21st century Western context. Taking the viewpoint of the martial arts as art forms open to reinterpretation, this unique book considers the ways in which martial arts can be used for different purposes, such as within movement systems and for self-help and therapy. However, the martial arts industry is a highly unregulated space. The book, therefore, considers the ways in which the martial arts are being regulated by Western influencers on social media as well as more formal international organisations connected to UNESCO. The project then examines the lives of long-term martial arts instructors and practitioners of historical European martial arts (HEMA), Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan), Wing Chun Kung Fu and other internal martial arts such as Cheng Hsin. This book draws on a wide range of data sources including autoethnography, ethnography, life history interviews and social media and textual analysis to paint a vivid picture of the reinvention process in contemporary society. It shows how elements of the martial arts (often from East Asian societies) are being adapted, critiqued, managed and merged to suit the social needs of today's martial artists and the public. This monograph will appeal to all scholars and students interested in combat sports, martial arts and physical culture from a social scientific and qualitative perspective. Catherine and Chaning Peake convinced Schell to let them breed seven mares to the stallion in 1941 and the next year the Peakes acquired Driftwood for $1,500.Driftwood offspring were known for their calm nature, athletic ability and excelled in the rodeo arena. Driftwood was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2006.
The 1936 Berlin Olympics
When Adolf Hitler hosted the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, he used the Games to rally political support in Germany and abroad for his white supremacist worldview. In doing so, Hitler not only ruptured the myth that politics and sports do not mix, but he also initiated the first major instance of sportswashing: hosting a sports mega-event to launder one's stained reputation on the world stage. The 1936 Berlin Olympics: Race, Power, and Sportswashing situates these controversial Games in the longer political history of the Olympics and examines the behind-the-scenes machinations that led to the International Olympic Committee handing these Games to Germany in the first place. In the United States, the Berlin Olympics catalyzed a raucous, if ultimately unsuccessful, boycott campaign that raised serious concerns about racialized repression in the host country. The Berlin Games furnished a high-profile testing ground for racial theories rooted in white supremacy-the marrow in the Nazis' ideological bones-where Black athletes like Jesse Owens thrived. The Games also brought innovations-like the Olympic Torch Relay-that were subsequently woven into Olympic tradition. Sportswashing is a significant concern in modern-day sports studies; this book demonstrates how the Olympic Games have long been both a potential pedestal for autocrats to boost their unsavory regimes and a flashpoint for human-rights criticism. Although history does not gift the present moment with crisp facsimiles from the past, thinking through history illuminates patterns and possibilities that can help make sense of the whirling swirl of today.

Determinants of Corporate Sponsorship Award Opportunities for Soccer Premier League Clubs in Kenya
Sponsorship of soccer clubs by corporate organizations is a common phenomenon worldwide. Sponsors have been giving assistance such as branded shirts, money, kits and stadia. Before awarding sponsorship, corporate organizations base their decisions on certain criteria. The sponsorship selection criteria have been documented in various studies, yet no such study had been done on the kenya soccer premier league. This therefore was the main focus of this study, whose objectives were four fold:1. To determine the influence of team-centered factors on corporate organizations decisions to sponsor Kenya Premier League clubs. 2. To appraise the influence of country-based characteristics on corporate organizations willingness to offer sponsorship to Kenya Premier League clubs. 3. To establish whether decisions made by corporate organizations to avail sports sponsorships to Kenya Premier League clubs were influenced by environmentally-centered factors.4. To determine whether team-centered, country-based and environmentally-centered characteristics differed significantly in the extent to which they influenced decisions made by corporate organizations to sponsor KPL clubs. Data was collected using self- administered questionnaires and interviews, from purposively selected corporate sponsors and clubs. Furthermore, the descriptive survey design was found suitable because it is concerned with finding out who, what, which and how of a phenomenon. Analysis of data entailed the use of descriptive statistics, with regression being used to test the hypotheses. Results revealed that team-based, country-based and environmentally-centered characteristics, had a positive and significant relationship with decisions made by corporate organizations to sponsor Kenya Premier League clubs. in addition, team-based characteristics had the strongest influence on willingness by corporate organizations to award sponsorship to Kenya Premier League clubs, followed by country-based factors, then environmentally-based factors.
