A new official does not need any other book but this one to work from. This book takes the complex information in the rules and breaks it down for laymen. The information paints a visible picture of a fast paced game so as it is easy to understand. With this book a new official is able to see the scenarios on the field in a modern and easy view. I have taken this book along with the national book and given it to football coaches and, who after reading Football Rules- Simply Stated, have thanked me for doing so. They could not believe the simplicity but yet thoroughness of the work. Thom Pickens North Florida Officials Association Secretary Without Football Rules: Simply Stated I would not be the official that I am today. Having played, I thought that I knew everything there was, however, McPhilomy showed me a complete new world. The author's ability to phrase the rules so that they can be learned quickly and easily is unmatched from other works that I have read. It is Simply Stated that gave me the keys to be a successful official, working high school ball, and built my rules knowledge foundation as I move up to the college ranks. I also use Simply Stated to train new high school officials. I highly recommend Simply Stated for any official or fan who wants a clear and concise view on the rule and how it should be interpreted. I use Simply Stated as the basis for my high school rules study every year, and will for years to come. Football Rules: Simply Stated is THE primer on high school rules and should be a part of every official's professional library. Kellum F. Winterdanse
Recipient of the 2023 International Skiing History Association's Ullr Book Award. The story of ballet skiing is one of unrealized adulthood: a child of clashing influences became a mentor-deprived adolescent, ultimately orphaned and abandoned while searching for self. This wandering youngster answered to a m矇lange of shifting monikers - Trick, Exotic, Hotdog, Freestyle, Stunt, Ballet, Acro - with Skiing for a surname and blessings by officialdom as inspiration. Winterdanse contemplates the foreshortened life of snow skiing's most creative discipline from the perspective of an athlete who presented it as art, and who understood what was required to sustain it. Or foster its return.Richly illustrated with hundreds of photographs, letters, journal entries, competition documents, performance programs, and news-article excerpts spanning 50 years, Winterdanse is not just about skiing, but about innovation, discovery, and the influence of contemporary culture on sport and art. It is about finding oneself on a road, a good road but not the right road, only to discern that the right road does not yet exist. It is about building a new road with little more than the conviction that it can be built. It is about thinking independently and owning the consequences.

Women and the Olympic Dream
On an April morning in 1896, unemployed single mother Stamata Revithi ran the 40 kilometers from Marathon to Athens, finishing in 5 hours 30 minutes. Barred from the first Olympic marathon, she was determined to prove herself. Through more than a century of Olympic Games history, women athletes--who were held back from swimming because long skirts were required, limited to running single-lap races because of fallacies about fragility, or forced to endure invasive gender exams--competed in spite of endless challenges. From Athens 1896 to Tokyo 2020, this history of women's participation in the Olympic Games centers on athletes who overcame entrenched inequity to gain inclusion.

Pathways
Paths exist because there is walking, or at least the trampling of many feet, human and other-than-human. They connect us, here and now, with those who walked before us and those who might follow our footsteps. Even when other forms of mobility have grown in importance and changed our societies in dramatic ways, most of us still depend on walking in our daily life. The authors of this volume follow footpaths in various historical and geographical settings, some of which may be deeply remembered locally, and raise questions: What happens if we considerpaths and trails as a distinct kind of heritage? This heritage is physical, as in traces in landscape and effects on vegetation; but it is also immaterial and digital, as it appears in computer games and mobile images. The chapters collected in this volume deal with walking and trails through many perspectives and sources, including maps, literature, sound and art, and often way beyond the beaten track. They point to historical and current forms of land use that are sustainable in the most basic meaning of the word. The exploration of paths speaks to a main feature of recent thinking on heritage making - the capacity of heritage not just to sit there in monumental fashion, but also to make. Paths change, act, and perform in relation to humans and other ani- mals. Paths are part of an endless co-creation of heritage, as we go.
The Little Book of Skiing
"A huge number of people ski, and this fun little book looks at all aspects of what makes it so appealing. For some, it's a serene communication with nature as they glide down a gentle slope in silence, for others it's a 100-miles-an-hour descent down an almost vertical piste with an evening of beer, cheese and singing as a follow-up. The Little Book of Skiing delves into this fascinating sport, starting with the history and encompassing pretty much everything that draws us to beautiful white slopes across the world. So whether you're a once-a-year wobble-down-a-nursery-slope type or a skiing superstar in lycra, this book will inform, amaze and amuse, and hopefully make your next epic power day that little bit better. SAMPLE QUOTE: ""There are really only three things to learn in skiing: how to put on your skis, how to slide downhill, and how to walk along the hospital corridor."" - From A Chinaman in My Bath and other pieces by Lord Mancroft, 1974 SAMPLE FACT: The word 'ski' comes from the ancient Norse word 'skio', which means a split piece of wood."

He Carried Me

More Than Cricket and Football

Spencer, Dominic Standish, Tim B. Swartz, Dan Travis, Theresa Walton-Fisette, and Zhong Yijing Given the presumed dominance of American sport, many fans throughout the hemisphere find it difficult to envision the role of sport beyond the confines of their own continent. And yet, world sport consists of so much more than the games Americans play and so much more than the stereotype of cricket for the elite and football for the working class. As worldwide sport continues to gain in popularity, we also see parallels to many aspects visible in North American sport, particularly celebrity and all its trappings and pitfalls. The success of athletes from other countries in basketball and ice hockey, and the proliferation of stars imported and now exported to and from North America, provides some better examples of sport's international power. It also creates a very new kind of sport celebrity, albeit one that often shows a rather limited reach beyond that star's own country or continent. Thus, rather than focusing on the Western Hemisphere, this collection of some of world sport's most heralded celebrities (including stars of Motocross, surfing, distance running, and more) serves as a sort of passport to many places that make up our global sporting environment.

Motorsport and Fascism
This book is the first English-language study of motorsport and Italian Fascism, arguing that a synergy existed between motor racing and Fascism that did not exist with other sports. Motorsport was able to bring together the two dominant, and often opposed, cultural roots of Fascism, the Futurism of F. T. Marinetti, and the Decadence associated with Gabriele D'Annunzio. The book traces this cultural convergence through a topical study of motorsport in the 1920s and 1930s placing it in the context of the history of sport under Mussolini's regime. Chapters discuss the centrality of speed and death in Fascist culture, the attempt to transform Rome into a motorsport capital, the architectural and ideological function of the Monza and Tripoli and autodromes, and two chapters on the importance of the Mille Miglia, a genuine Fascist artefact that became one of the most legendary motor races of all time.
Football Fans and Social Spacing
This book is about the relationship between leisure and power. More specifically, it theorizes a group of supporters' attempts to control social space within and around English football stadiums. Not only is football a popular leisure form, it is also one which has undergone a remarkable process of transformation during the last 30 years. Advance surveillance techniques, all seater-stadia, rising ticket prices, and a growing intolerance to expressive modes of fandom have all transformed the experience of watching the professional game.Through these five chapters, Ian Woolsey asks how the collective responses of travelling football supporters to these major societal currents and changes within the game; liquid modernity and the post-1989 transformation of English football, are managed via the distinct and oft-competing processes of social spacing in football. An important inspiration for the book is the work of Zygmunt Bauman, particularly his ideas on cognitive, aesthetic, and moral 'spacings' as a social production. Ian Woolsey's powerful and persuasive application of these ideas not only extends Bauman's focus on the 'politics' of power in public space to include a consideration of leisure but in so doing shows that ethnography, selectively conducted and theoretically informed, can provide data for a rich, sociological account of a football world. The book will be of interest to researchers and scholars of sociology of leisure, sociology of sport, criminology, and cultural studies.
Restart. Sport After the Covid-19 Time Out
In the edited collection Restart: Sport After the Covid-19 Time Out, practitioners and international scholars explore the "restart" of sport and fitness following the initial period of lockdowns during spring 2020. The chapters provide insight into the sport and fitness landscape following the initial wave of the pandemic. The book focuses on challenges for sport providers, consequences for sporting participants, and opportunities for new ways of practicing sports. It contributes contemporaneous data, analyses, and insights into the global sport landscape that has been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. This book presents a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives in a total of nineteen individual chapters, organized around five main themes. The first four chapters deal with the restart of sporting events in four countries. This section is followed by an assessment of the Olympic Movement's challenges after its postponement of the 2020 Summer Olympic Games to 2021. Chapters in the next theme provide analyses of how national governments handled restarting sport and fitness in different geographical locations. Finally, the last three chapters look at the role of the media during the restart phase, both in reporting sport and with regards to innovations and the implementation of new technology in staging and broadcasting elite sport.
