Athletes pressing charges
Athletes Pressing Charges explores the athlete-led protest movement in the Olympic sport of modern pentathlon. The athlete activists protest against the removal of the horse-riding discipline from the sport and blame the sport's governing body, the International Modern Pentathlon Union, for violating good governance principles and mismanagement. By taking the existing power imbalance between sport organizations and athletes as a starting point, this book argues that providing a voice to independent athletes affected by policy changes, is crucial to understand the ongoing issues in the sport. The protest movement is contextualized against the backdrop of increasingly stronger attempts by athletes from semi-professional Olympic sports to make their voices heard in decision-making processes. Therefore, this study has broader significance for the ongoing challenges by athletes and athletes-led organizations on powerful sport organizations.

Skateboarding Is Not a Fashion

Nearly every area of garment design was touched by skate wear's aesthetic- influencing the design and fashion of innumerable media from printed T-shirts to board shorts and denim to track suits along the way. Telling the inside story of skate couture in the words of those who lived it, Skateboarding Is Not A Fashion features original commentary from designers, company founders, and pro skateboarders who have defined skateboarding's look for entire generations. Skate personalities we meet include Stacy Peralta, Lance Mountain, Tony Alva, Brad Bowman, Steve Olson, Steve Caballero, Steve Van Doren, and many more.

Backpacking Tennessee
"The reason I travel and explore the outdoors is simple," writes Johnny Molloy, "the world is a beautiful place!" And Molloy would know: he has backpacked more than 2,500 nights in forty states. It is this experience--much of it garnered in his home state of Tennessee--combined with his extensive production of guidebooks spanning activities from hiking and camping to paddling and bicycling, that enabled him to produce Backpacking Tennessee: Overnight Trail Adventures from the Mississippi River to the Appalachian Mountains.Complete with directions, distances, descriptions, and maps, Backpacking Tennessee is divided into four sections that together outline forty overnight hikes across West Tennessee, Middle Tennessee, the Cumberland Plateau, and East Tennessee and the Appalachian Mountains. The trails Molloy has chosen to highlight are a mix of well-known hikes and lesser-known areas, ranging in distance and difficulty for both novice hikers and experienced backpackers. Woven throughout the trail descriptions are comments on scenery, notes about safety, and historical information that help readers get a true feel for each hike. To round out his comprehensive guide, Molloy also includes ratings, 1-5, on the family- and dog-friendliness of each trail--an especially helpful feature for readers bringing loved ones along. From the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Cherokee National Forest to Big South Fork and Land Between the Lakes, Tennessee offers thousands of miles of trails for adventurers looking to explore. For budding outdoor enthusiasts and experienced backpackers alike, Backpacking Tennessee answers the timeless question: where do we go next?
Dangerous Fun
A thrilling ethnography of big wave surfing in Hawaii that explores the sociology of fun. Straight from the beaches of Hawaii comes an exciting new ethnography of a community of big-wave surfers. Oahu's Waimea Bay attracts the world's best big wave surfers--men and women who come to test their physical strength, courage, style, knowledge of the water, and love of the ocean. Sociologist Ugo Corte sees their fun as the outcome of social interaction within a community. Both as participant and observer, he examines how mentors, novices, and peers interact to create episodes of collective fun in a dangerous setting; how they push one another's limits, nourish a lifestyle, advance the sport and, in some cases, make a living based on their passion for the sport. In Dangerous Fun, Corte traces how surfers earn and maintain a reputation within the field, and how, as innovations are introduced, and as they progress, establish themselves and age, they modify their strategies for maximizing performance and limiting chances of failure. Corte argues that fun is a social phenomenon, a pathway to solidarity rooted in the delight in actualizing the self within a social world. It is a form of group cohesion achieved through shared participation in risky interactions with uncertain outcomes. Ultimately, Corte provides an understanding of collective effervescence, emotional energy, and the interaction rituals leading to fateful moments--moments of decision that, once made, transform one's self-concept irrevocably.

The First Kentucky Derby
Today's Kentucky Derby is a multimillion-dollar spectacle involving corporate sponsorship, worldwide media coverage, and an annual citywide festival in Louisville. Over its nearly century-and-a-half history, the Kentucky Derby has grown to be one of the biggest sporting events of the year, attracting 150,000 spectators at the track and nearly 15 million television viewers on the first Saturday each May. But 1875, the year of the first Derby, was a different time. The Louisville Jockey Club track, which would one day bear the name "Churchill Downs," was a small structure that might, on its best day, provide seating and standing room for 12,000 spectators. The grandstand was plain and functional and included a section reserved for bookmakers, whose trade was legal and who operated in the open. Perhaps most significantly, the majority of jockeys in the race were Black, in stark contrast to the present-day Derby, where participation by African-American jockeys is rare. In The First Kentucky Derby, racing historian Mark Shrager examines the events leading up to the first "Run for the Roses," the unsuccessful effort that the winning owner might have made to rig the race for his preferred horse, and the prominent role played by African Americans in Gilded Age racing culture--a holdover from pre-emancipation days, when slaves were trained from birth to ride for their wealthy owners and grew up surrounded by the horses that would be their life's work.
The Politics of the Olympic Games
Can sports and politics mix? They can and do, according to the author of this study of the Olympic Games. Richard Espy's objective is to show how the organization of the Games reflects the structure of international politics. He focuses on four basic issues concerning the Olympic system during the post-World War II period: German participation; Chinese participation; South African and Rhodesia participation; and the role of sport federations, international organizations, and business interests in the Olympics. Espy discusses the relationship between the Olympic idea of international amity through sport competition and the reality of world affairs, how television has changed governmental views and use of the Olympic Games, and whether sports can be used legitimately as a political tool. He also recommends possible changes in the organizational structure of the event--or even the Olympic ideal itself--to help the Games achieve their intended result: an atmosphere of international good will. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. This title was originally published in 1979, followed by a paperback in 1981.
Footprints Along the West Highland Way
Like a 21st Century Jack Kerouac, Tommy Ray sets out to wander the world and report back on his experiences. This time Tommy's walking the West Highland Way, the first official long-distance footpath in Scotland. Leaving Glasgow with a weighty pack on his back and rain falling upon his head, he treks into the Scottish countryside, often doused with Highlands showers, climbing mountains, camping by Lochs, and rising to the challenges a solo traveler must confront. Along the way, Tommy experiences Scottish food (haggis...), enjoys the company of his fellow trekkers, and many a refreshing ale at historic inns. Tommy details all the experiences - the high times and the hard times - to ensure the reader feels they are walking with him (legs aching, sweat trickling down his back, seeking shelter from the storm) as he explores Scotland. Packed full of pertinent, often philosophical observations and told with Ray's trademark dry, understated wit, Footprints Along the West Highland Way is a treat for anyone who enjoys an engaging travelogue.
The Battle of Adobe Walls
"The narrative is one that tells how 28 buffalo hunters from Kansas vanquished 800 Indians in the Texas Panhandle." -Salt Lake Herald, Jan. 6, 1908 How did 28 buffalo hunters trapped at the buffalo hunting rendezvous Adobe Walls vanquish over 800 Comanches and Kiowas in The Second Battle of Adobe Walls, fought on June 27, 1874? In 1908, Edward Campbell Little (1858 -1924) would answer this question in a short, 25-page work titled "The Battle of Adobe Walls," that would appear in the January 1908 issue of Pearson's Magazine. In introducing his work, Little writes: "The Kansas buffalo hunters invaded the Texas Panhandle and the Llano Estacado in force in the spring of 1874; in five months it is said they slew a hundred thousand bison. The deserted Adobe Walls, a station established by Spanish friars, French Canadian hunters or General Howe's soldiers, was selected as the rendezvous for these hunters, who came from Dodge City, one hundred and seventy-five miles away. Three "business houses" and a blacksmith shop gave token of approaching civilization, and about them congregated all the adventurous spirits of the Southwest, far from the protection of any military post." About the author: Edward Campbell Little was a U.S. Representative from Kansas. He attended the public schools of Abilene, Kansas and graduated from the University of Kansas in Lawrence in 1883. For several years, he was connected with the Santa Fe Railroad. After studying law, he was admitted to the bar in 1886 and commenced practice in Lawrence. Little served as chairman of the Republican State convention in 1888. In 1889, he was the city attorney of Ness City, and from 1890 to 1892, he was prosecuting attorney of Dickinson County. He served as delegate at large to the Republican National Convention in 1892. In 1892 and 1893, Little was Minister Resident to Egypt. In 1896 and 1897, he was the private secretary of Governor John W. Leedy. He unsuccessfully ran for senator in 1897. During the Spanish-American War, from 1898 to 1899, he was lieutenant colonel of the Twentieth Regiment, Kansas Volunteers. This service earned him the Spanish War Service Medal, and the Philippine Campaign Medal. In 1908, he settled in Kansas City, Kansas. Little was elected to the Sixty-fifth and to the three succeeding Congresses, from Kansas's 2nd congressional district, and served from March 4, 1917, until his death in Washington, D.C. on June 27, 1924
Fast Guys, Rich Guys, and Idiots
Sam Moses, a motorsports writer for Sports Illustrated, was assigned to go racing and write about what happened. Fast Guys, Rich Guys, and Idiots is a personal odyssey that peers over the cliff of change and into the pit of obsession. From small-time races to glittery grands prix, it lays bare the greed, lust, and desperation of every driver for time behind the wheel and a faster car. It explains the perfectionism behind taking a turn at the limit and describes the intoxicating thrill of stealing down the Daytona backstraight at nearly two hundred miles an hour. The core of Moses's story takes place in the heartland of stock car racing, there he finds a spot on a team in Ether, North Carolina. The team's owner is a tough Louisiana oil man, its crew chief a lanky, laconic Texan, and its number-one driver a hairy-chested leadfoot who learned fast driving on backwoods Georgia roads, delivering beauty supplies in his Mustang. Crashes echo throughout the tale that follows, five of them the author's own.
Games of the North American Indian, Volume 2
Games figured prominently in the myths of North American Indian tribes, and also in their ceremonies for bringing rain and fertility and combating misfortune. In his classic study, originally published in 1907 as a report of the Bureau of American Ethnology, Stewart Culin divided the games played by Indian men and women into two general types. Volume 1 of this Bison Books edition takes up games of chance, involving guessing and throwing dice. Culin was able to show that the games of North American tribes were remarkably similar in method and purpose. He found that games using dice of various materials--wood, cane, bone, animal teeth, fruit stones--existed among 130 tribes belonging to 30 linguistic groups. The games are described in detail in this volume, and so are the popular guessing games drawing on sticks and wooden disks and involving hidden objects. Volume 2 is just as absorbing in its elaboration of skills like archery and games like snow-snake, in which darts or javelins were hurled over snow or ice. Played throughout the continent north of Mexico were the hoop and pole game and its miniature, solitaire form called ring and pin, here illustrated. With equal authority Culin discusses ball games: racket, shinny, football, and hot ball. He includes accounts of "minor amusements" shuttlecock, tipcat, quoits, popgun, bean shooter, and cat's cradle.Originally published in 1907, Stewart Culin's comprehensive work reveals a side of American Indian culture still only rarely shown. An experienced observer, Culin was curator of ethnology at the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences and the author of books about games in other cultures.

Patrick O'Brien's Grand Prix Rating System
The 2013 Formula One season was dominated by the Vettel/ Red Bull-Renault package, which won 13 of the 19 races. Many reckon that Vettel is one of the great drivers. Some however argue that Vettel was fortunate in having the fastest car, the Red Bull-Renault. Just how good was Vettel compared with his peers? This publication compares grand prix and Formula One drivers, cars and packages in simple arithmetic terms. My study found that all that matters in assessing competitiveness in grand prix racing is 'the gap'; that is, the time intervals between competitors. For the first time the driver has been separated from the car and each is expressed as separate performance elements that make up the performance package. Just how much current four-time champion Vettel contributes to the Red Bull-Renault's recent dominance is explained and quantified. My analysis starts from the first car race in 1894, from Paris to Rouen, and includes over 1,200 grand prix races. Understanding Urban Cycling
Academic interest in cycling has burgeoned in recent years with significant literature relating to the health and environmental benefits of cycling, the necessity for cycle-specific infrastructure, and the embodied experiences of cycling.Based upon primary research in a variety of contexts such as London, Shanghai and Taipei, this book demonstrates that recent developments in urban cycling policy and practice are closely linked to broader processes of capital accumulation. It argues that cycling is increasingly caught up in discourses around smart cities that emphasise technological solutions to environmental problems and neoliberal ideas on individual responsibility and bio-political conduct, which only results in solutions that prioritise those who are already mobile. Accordingly, the central argument of the book is not that the popularisation of cycling is inherently bad, but that the manner in which cycling is being popularised gives cause for social and environmental concern. Ultimately the book argues that cycling has now become a vehicle for sustaining pro-growth agendas rather than subverting them or shifting to sustainable no-growth/de-growth and less technologically driven visions of modernity. This book makes an innovative contribution to the fields of Cycling Studies, Mobilities and Transport and will be of interest to students and academics working in Human Geography, Transport Studies, Urban Studies, Urban Planning, Public Policy, Sociology and Sustainability.
