Before Brooklyn
In the April of 1945, exactly two years before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in major league baseball, liberal Boston City Councilman Izzy Muchnick persuaded the Red Sox to try out three black players in return for a favorable vote to allow the team to play on Sundays. The Red Sox got the councilman's much-needed vote, but the tryout was a sham; the three players would get no closer to the major leagues. It was a lost battle in a war that was ultimately won by Robinson in 1947. This book tells the story of the little-known heroes who fought segregation in baseball, from communist newspaper reporters to the Pullman car porters who saw to it that black newspapers espousing integration in professional sports reached the homes of blacks throughout the country. It also reminds us that the first black player in professional baseball was not Jackie Robinson but Moses Fleetwood Walker in 1884, and that for a time integrated teams were not that unusual. And then, as segregation throughout the country hardened, the exclusion of blacks in baseball quietly became the norm, and the battle for integration began anew.

This book tells the story of an ambitious and adventurous young man who changed the sporting landscape in Australia by introducing the sport of lacrosse into Melbourne in 1876. Lambton Mount is heralded as the undisputed initiator and 'father' of lacrosse in Australia but his broader achievements as an athlete, explorer, pastoralist, inventor, industrialist and outstanding Australian colonial pioneer have remained largely unsung. Now his fascinating and compelling story is told. Mount's motivation to introduce lacrosse is examined along with the details of how he inspired fellow-pioneers to join him during the foundation years of the sport. The birth and early development of Australia's great lacrosse clubs are documented against the backdrop of the expansion of the sport across colonial borders, the coming of Australian Federation, the beginnings of women's lacrosse and the interruption by war. The commencement and development of Interstate and international lacrosse in Australia form a key component of the narrative which is documented and supported with over 190 illustrations and photographs, many never previously published. Central to this story are the accounts of the key athletes and administrators who built lacrosse in Australia. This is a 'must have' book for everyone who has come under the enduring spell of this unique sport.
Soccer. Pressing just after ball loss
In the creation or development of the game models devised by the coaches, one of the options that can be taken is the pressing just after losing the ball. This type of pressure or this moment in which it is "decided" to press, is usually identified with teams that want to take the initiative in the game with the ball, and who try to recover the ball as soon as possible. We can say that the "pressing just after losing" is a way to face, as a team, the moment when we lose the ball and it is still in play, being able to be carried out by all the players, by a group of them or by a single player, depending on the game strategy and on the team's game model, and according to the objectives we want to achieve with it. It is closely related to the attack-defense transition. The pressure after loss can also be selective in terms of the places or times in which to carry it out, depending on the game model and the structures used by one team or another. There may be a team that always faces loss with a defensive fallback and only performs "pressing just after losing" if the loss occurs at the beginning of the play from their own box and with the team deployed, for example.

The Football Thesaurus 2e
Field generals throw back-shoulder passes to vertical threats, working off the bump and run. Penalties were originally signaled by horns, not flags. Tailbacks follow the big uglies to paydirt for a touchdown. Football is a sport with its own lingo and jargon - a colorful patois that's developed over the years and millions of games, college and pro, with today's broadcasters developing their own descriptions of America's Game. In The Football Thesaurus, a fascinating compendium of football terms, Jesse Goldberg-Strassler - broadcaster, storyteller, talker, voice - explains what football terms mean and how they came to be. Whether it's a discussion of how Doug Plank was the inspiration for Buddy Ryan's 46 defense or why legendary Chicago Bears owner/coach George Halas referred to a football as a cantaloupe, Goldberg-Strassler's book succeeds both as a football reference and a history of the game. "Football is the country's favorite sport, the heartbeat of most every town, community, and metropolis," Goldberg-Strassler says. "We watch it, we breathe it, and - above all else - we talk it. The Football Thesaurus is filled with all the ways the game is talked, from the casual jargon of the armchair quarterback to the barking cadence of the signal-caller in the shotgun." The Football Thesaurus comes from the author of The Baseball Thesaurus. The Baseball Thesaurus has been an Amazon bestseller and is currently in a third edition. Professionals in the sport agree: "Sports fans have their own unique language. The Football Thesaurus delves into the terms that have helped turn football into America's Game. I've always been fascinated by the words used to describe the action on the field, Jesse not only provides the terminology but also the context. A terrific resource that will be a part of my preparation for every new season." - Ian Eagle, broadcaster, CBS Sports "A fabulous read, whether as a refresher for the die-hard fan, a scroll for the football historian, or as a foundation to learn about the game itself. Jesse hits many of the fine points that make the game unique. I imagine if aliens ever came down and asked what football is, I'd give them this text and then slowly back away, cowering in fear." - Adam Amin, broadcaster, ESPN "For the casual fan, The Football Thesaurus weaves the basic concepts of the game with entertaining stories from Army's Lonely End to Michigan State's Little Giants," Goldberg-Strassler says. "For the 12th Man, the Thesaurus collects every type of technique and play imaginable, sharing how to differentiate between a stalk and a trap block, a jet and an orbit sweep, and a flare and a banana route."

Death in Grimsby
Death in Grimsby - 50 Years Following Brighton & Hove Albion is one person's life-long passion for his home town football club.A passion that any supporter of any football club might recognise as similar to their own.The author explains: I have been following my home town football club of Brighton & Hove Albion for a full 52 years and witnessed many highs and lows, and thankfully very few periods of mid-table mediocrity.Like a fan of any club, whether that be Arsenal, Accrington Stanley, Aston Villa or Alloa Athletic, football is tribal, loyal, consuming and most of all, passionate. My own passion was conceived on a sunny Saturday afternoon in September 1967 when I was just 11 years old, as I stood wide-eyed at the front of the North Stand of the Goldstone Ground watching these huge men battle for a crisp, white ball on the green turf before me.It is a passion which has never dimmed with greying hair, crows' feet etched lines and free bus pass just three years away. This book is a collection of short stories which charts the first 50 years I have supported my beloved Albion, starting with that first game at the Goldstone in 1967 and finishing with a match against Wolves at Molineux in April 2017, when we all but mathematically secured promotion to the Premier League. Each chapter is a separate story related to 21 different games and events, including my first night game against Portsmouth in 1969, a record 8-2 defeat against Bristol Rovers in 1973, winning promotion at St James Park in 1979, the FA Cup Final in 1983, National Falmer Day in 2004 and much more. These are knitted with many personal recollections such as meeting Ernie Wise in Leeds, trying to explain the Foot and Mouth Disease funeral pyres to my young daughters before our match against Carlisle United in 2001, interviewing the England legend Paul Gascoigne and being hospitalised with hypothermia after a game at Grimsby in 2004.Here among 50,000 words and 115 images, I hope the reader finds something to inspire, laugh at or cry... and recapture their own memories of a game which as the great Bill Shankly said: "Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it's much more serious than that."
Bath The Enigma - New Edition
Bath, founded in 1865, rank among the oldest established rugby clubs in England, yet not for decades could they shake off their poor-relation status in the shadows of West Country rivals Bristol and Gloucester. Indeed, to do so required something approaching a miracle. But miracles do not 'just' happen, they happen for a reason, or as in Bath's case for a number of reasons. Hurdles for Bath to jump? Oh yes, plenty. Indeed, how does one even begin to define a club that by 1900 had already produced three England internationals and yet by season 1905-6 with a meagre 7 wins from 33 matches played came near to being folded-up. And who, in that same season of near despair, would ever have contemplated the transformation that would later lead Bath in season 1995-6 to be chosen to carry the Union colours against Rugby League giants Wigan (first under League rules, then Union rules) to end a century of divide between the two codes. Yet chosen Bath were!Of course, it did not happen overnight, but as the decades passed, so too did the pieces of the jigsaw slowly come together, culminating with a team (nay teams) that rose to the forefront of English (indeed British) rugby. Moreover, over the decades the friendly nature of the club and its supporters has never changed, as they remain the same rugby family they always were. And that is a fascinating part of their story, one that includes the closeness of the bondwith their parent city, their cherished home on 'the Rec' (its original stands, now rebuilt, bombed to pieces in World War Two) and 'Oh, ' that banter and humour experienced on match-days.This 2nd edition of 'Bath the Enigma' relates their story with an abridged version of the original 1st edition from 1865-2015, plus the five seasons which have followed, culminating with the unprecedented season of 2019/20, a season of near unparalleled difficulties for rugby, sport in general and Bath. A Review of season 2020/21 is added. In accordance with the author's wishes all royalties from this book go direct to the Bath Rugby Foundation Charity.
Football, Place and National Identity
Given its popularity, international football might be viewed as a prism through which the imagined community of the nation becomes closer to a manifest reality with matches providing examples of that community collectively rejoicing or crying. The sport potentially sheds insights on the complexities of ethnic and national identity, as it is a medium through which allegiances are (re)produced and expressed. Alongside the internationalisation of club teams, international representative teams also appear to be becoming more trans-national with players born outside that country, but with family connections to it, playing in the national colours. Increasing flexibility of regulations governing international representation means that countries can potentially select from a considerably broader pool of talent, drawing on players with ethnic or cultural connections to the country. For example, for a number of decades now, the Republic of Ireland team has included sizeable numbers of non-Irish born players, sons and grandsons of Irish emigrants. Similar tendencies are clear in the selection of English-born players of West Indian origin for football teams representing Caribbean countries. Colonial connections and related migration flows explain France's selection of players born in places such as Algeria or Morocco but brought up in France. The successful French teams of the late 1990s and early 2000s drew heavily on players from a multiplicity of ethnic and geographic origins. Conversely, many African countries select French-born players of African origin thereby reclaiming some of the sons of their extensive diasporas and a sizeable number of players born in Europe have competed in the Africa Cup of Nations in recent years. In this way, historical colonial relationships and associated migration flows provide the backdrop to the more eclectic nature of national representative teams. Elsewhere this amalgamation of both civic and ethnic senses of national identity, has allowed teams like Turkey and Croatia to tap into their extensive emigrant pool. This book focuses on one dimension of the intricate connections between football, place and politics. It investigates the switching of national sporting allegiance by some footballers from their country of birth to country of residency or family origins, examines the reasons behind the recent growth of the phenomenon, and explores reactions to this.
Small Time
In 1988, 23-year-old American goalkeeper Justin Bryant thought a glorious career in professional football awaited him. He had just saved two penalties for his American club - the Orlando Lions - against Scotland's Dunfermline Athletic, to help claim the first piece of silverware in their history. He was young, strong, healthy, and confident. But professional football, he found, is rarely easy.Small Time is the story of a life spent mostly in the backwaters of the game. As Justin negotiated the Non-League pitches of the Vauxhall-Opel League, and the many failed professional leagues of the U.S. in the 1980s and 90s, he struggled not only with his game, but his physical and mental health.Battling stress, social anxiety, a mysterious stomach ailment, and simple bad luck, he nonetheless experienced fleeting moments of triumph that no amount of money can buy. Football, he learned, is 95% blood, sweat, and tears; but if you love it enough, the other 5% makes up for it.

A Phillies Odyssey
I called my best friend. Whenever there was a huge signing or a big trade, I called BK. BK and I agreed on everything. We were also wrong about everything."Coffey is gonna put the Fly Guys over the top, buddy!""We're gonna pour coffee in that Cup!""Tartabull should hit 30 in the National League!""At least! Maybe 35 if teams don't pitch around him.""I see a lot of Byron Evans in this Barry Gardner, Dave.""I'm surprised he slipped to the second round to be honest."Whatever reservations I had about trading Curt Schilling were washed away after a five-minute phone call. BK and I ran through each of the players in the D-Backs return one by one."Daal won 16 games last year. That's nothing to sneeze at.""Yep, just been unlucky this season. I've also heard a lot of good things about this Figueroa kid.""Definitely. I've heard he's a control pitcher. He trusts the defense behind him. That keeps his teammates engaged.""That's a great point. Also, Travis Lee may be the best defensive first baseman in the league.""A real cool customer, I heard. A slick fielder. And if that bat gets going ...""And people love this Padilla guy's stuff.""'Electric' is the word I've heard."BK and I threw around 'people say' or 'I've heard, ' as if we had any sources of any kind. I didn't have any sources. BK was my source. We were 15, 16 years old discussing prospects on our parents' landline. We didn't read anything online. In the summer of 2000, the extent of the internet was AOL chatrooms and Cindy Margolis pictures. We didn't have regular check-ins with scouts. We didn't go to school with a kid whose neighbor's uncle was Mike Arbuckle. I don't know where we pulled these scouting reports from, but it took just a few minutes to talk ourselves into this massive haul for our star pitcher without the slightest hint of irony. What's better than one ace, we reasoned? Three aces and Travis Lee.---------A Phillies Odyssey is a collection of essays on forgotten Fightins through the eyes of a fan. From Sil Campusano's timely hit to Wilson Valdez' 19th inning heroics and everything in between, A Phillies Odyssey serves as a reminder that, no, you're not the only one who thought Ricky Otero and Tony Longmire were the next big thing.
Impact Zone
Every golfer can improve their game using the instructions in The Impact Zone by Bobby Clampett "one of the most knowledgeable golfing minds in the game." --Tom Lehman, British Open Champion Impact has long been called golf's "moment of truth," and great golfers have spent countless hours working on their swings trying to upgrade their impact dynamics as the golf club approaches, contacts, then swings through the ball. For the first time, with The Impact Zone, golfers will have a book that focuses their attention on the very same region of the swing on which professional golfers have always concentrated. The Impact Zone is a unique instructional guide in that everything in it either focuses on or applies to improving a golfer's understanding and execution of impact. Here, acclaimed professional golfer Bobby Clampett concludes that the overwhelming bias and convention of today's contemporary teaching environment is to value swing styles over swing dynamics, and in so doing, the overwhelming majority of golf teachers miss the boat in terms of teaching the game effectively. Ultimately this emphasis on swing style comes at the expense of helping golfers to develop sound swing dynamics, which are the real keys to consistent ball striking and better golf. With the help of CBS's Swing Vision high-speed camera--using images from many of the game's greatest contemporary players (including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, John Daly, Vijay Singh, Sergio Garcia, and more)--The Impact Zone takes an unprecedented look at the most important six inches in golf, those that immediately precede, contain, and follow impact. To further demonstrate these principles, Clampett presents photos and drills that convey the five essential dynamics golfers need to produce and reproduce solid impact. Throughout these instructional pages, Bobby Clampett--teamed with veteran golf writer Andy Brumer--relays his own personal story of straying from swing dynamics and how he found his way back. He recalls memorable stories from the Tour, blending innovative instruction with his colorful, engaging anecdotes. Clampett and Brumer create an essential instructional guide with clear, concise advice--on creating great swing dynamics through the impact zone--the universally acknowledged key to more consistent and better golf.
Forged From The Docks
Born out the docks in the Victorian East End, Millwall and West Ham United's rivalry precedes the formation of both football clubs. The two areas of East London viewed each other with suspicion and discontent - something that only heightened after Millwall's move south of the River Thames in 1910.Meeting over 100 times in their history, this derby, regarded as the fiercest and most violent in England, has been littered with controversy, disorder and foul play - football games have occasionally broke out too.Forged From The Docks tells the story of the social history behind the rivalry and how it's evolved into the derby we all know today.

Franklin Field Saturdays
This book is not a treatise on the history of Penn football - Dan Rottenberg's marvelous 1985 book "Fight On, Pennsylvania" is the definitive work on that. What I have gathered here is a compilation of snapshots, narrative and pictorial - a scrapbook, if you will - of 65 memorable Ivy League football games played at Franklin Field since the conference began round-robin play in 1956. It is meant to celebrate the 65th anniversary - 1956 to 2021 - of Penn football in the Ivy League. It also pays homage to the glory and majesty of the grand stadium at 33rd and Spruce Streets in Philadelphia, the oldest college football stadium in the United States. Ted Gilmore is retired, after working for 40+ years in the Insurance industry, where he specialized in Workers' Compensation. As part of a three-generational Penn family, Ted began attending Penn football games at Franklin Field when he was 8 years old, and has rarely missed a game there since then - except during the 1980s, when his 2 children were involved in sports. The Pandemic of 2020 provided Ted with an opportunity to fulfill a goal of his - to put together a book about the best games played at Franklin Field since Penn joined the Ivy League in 1956. Producing this book also reduced his level of "withdrawal" resulting from the cancellation of Penn's 2020 football season. A native Philadelphian, Ted is a graduate of Central High School (of Philadelphia) and Penn. He now lives in Willistown PA with his wife, Marygrace, with whom he recently celebrated Anniversary #50. When not attending Penn football games at Franklin Field (or Penn basketball games at the Palestra), he spends as much time as possible with his 5 grandchildren. This is his 1st book.
