Franklin Field Saturdays
This book is not a treatise on the history of Penn football - Dan Rottenberg's marvelous 1985 book "Fight On, Pennsylvania" is the definitive work on that. What I have gathered here is a compilation of snapshots, narrative and pictorial - a scrapbook, if you will - of 65 memorable Ivy League football games played at Franklin Field since the conference began round-robin play in 1956. It is meant to celebrate the 65th anniversary - 1956 to 2021 - of Penn football in the Ivy League. It also pays homage to the glory and majesty of the grand stadium at 33rd and Spruce Streets in Philadelphia, the oldest college football stadium in the United States. Ted Gilmore is retired, after working for 40+ years in the Insurance industry, where he specialized in Workers' Compensation. As part of a three-generational Penn family, Ted began attending Penn football games at Franklin Field when he was 8 years old, and has rarely missed a game there since then - except during the 1980s, when his 2 children were involved in sports. The Pandemic of 2020 provided Ted with an opportunity to fulfill a goal of his - to put together a book about the best games played at Franklin Field since Penn joined the Ivy League in 1956. Producing this book also reduced his level of "withdrawal" resulting from the cancellation of Penn's 2020 football season. A native Philadelphian, Ted is a graduate of Central High School (of Philadelphia) and Penn. He now lives in Willistown PA with his wife, Marygrace, with whom he recently celebrated Anniversary #50. When not attending Penn football games at Franklin Field (or Penn basketball games at the Palestra), he spends as much time as possible with his 5 grandchildren. This is his 1st book.
The Ice Bowl
The day of the Ice Bowl game was so cold, the referees' whistles wouldn't work; so cold, the reporters' coffee froze in the press booth; so cold, fans built small fires in the concrete and metal stands; so cold, TV cables froze and photographers didn't dare touch the metal of their equipment; so cold, the game was as much about survival as it was about skill and strategy. On New Year's Eve, 1967, the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers met for a classic NFL championship game, played on a frozen field in sub-zero weather. The "Ice Bowl" challenged every skill of these two great teams. Here's the whole story, based on dozens of interviews with people who were there--on the field and off--told by author Ed Gruver with passion, suspense, wit, and accuracy.
Level Up
Sammy Clark has been a basketball coach and educator for many years. His job is to empower and enhance the lives of his students. In his new book, Level Up, Clark hopes to inform readers of the impact playing sports can have on the lives of youth. Recognizing that sports are often played with love, passion, and a seemingly endless supply of energy, the first-time author decided to gather his knowledge and years of experience to help coaches, educators, and students understand the correlation between sports, education and subsequent careers."If the same intention and work ethic athletes apply to the court could follow them into the classroom," the author declares, "the journey to a successful career can be made smoother."While the specific concepts of Level Up focuses on basketball, the underlying message of utilizing hard work, skill, and purpose are transferable to all areas of sports.

The book also gives a fascinating insight into the genealogical histories of the Hearts players, taking the reader back into the players' Scottish, English and Irish ancestries.Pride of the Hearts commemorates the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Royal British Legion in 1921. It follows on from Pride of the Lions, Pride of the Jocks and Pride of the Bears all published by Derek Niven.

Sticky Wicket
Malcolm Speed has been involved first-hand with some of the most tumultuous events in the history of cricket. He has been burned in effigy on several occasions; described in the Hindustan times as 'one of the most disliked men in India'; and nominated as 'public enemy number one' by the Sydney Morning Herald. Initially viewed as an outsider in an environment customarily run by 'cricket people', Speed's appointment in 1997 as CEO of the Australian Cricket Board occurred as the administration faced a hostile relationship and delicate negotiations with its players. From pay disputes to corruption, and player behaviour to chucking, Speed had plenty to occupy his four-year term in the job. As CEO of the International Cricket Council from 2001 to 2008, Speed oversaw the emergence of India as the game's superpower; the introduction of a new shorter form of the game, twenty20; the disastrous World Cup in the West Indies in 2007; the murder investigation surrounding the death of Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer; and the 'Monkeygate' scandal involving India and Australia in 2008. In Sticky Wicket, Speed pulls no punches as he speaks candidly about cricket - the game, the characters and the dramas - as one of its privileged custodians during his decade at the top of world cricket. With a Foreword by Richie Benaud
Rocky Elsom Leader of the Wallabies
ROCKY ELSOM: LEADER OF tHE WALLABIES is an insightful and revealing look into the rugby union career of one of Australia's greatest Wallabies, Rocky Elsom, as seen through the eyes of the key figures in his life, including family members, team-mates and coaches. From representing Australia at under 16s level to attaining cult status in Ireland and named as the best player in the world, Rocky has exerted the same talismanic influence on the Wallabies that Richie McCaw has had on New Zealand. A rugged individualist, Rocky's biggest task to date will be leading the Australian team for the World Cup in New Zealand in September 2011. "After covering Rocky's career as a journalist for eight years I thought I had a fair idea of him, but I realized I hardly knew him at all. Rocky is like a modern day renaissance Man, a Leonardo da Vinci in studs. Apart from being one of the greatest Wallabies of his generation, Rocky is a musician, a philosopher, an entrepreneur and a pilot just to list a few of his pastimes. Most people enjoy speaking about, even boasting about, their interests, especially if that is landing a rickety two-seater t-Bird sideways on a slippery runway, not Rocky. He rarely talks about it, he just does it." - Bret Harris

Valley of Dreams
Charlton Athletic represent a model of how a Premiership football club should be run. Former manager Alan Curbishley reveals the secrets of the club's success - from the boardroom and manager's office down to the dressing room and pitchside - and reflects on how the club went from homeless strugglers to challenging football's elite. Alan Curbishley encountered most of football's ill winds during the 15 years he was coach, co-manager, then sole manager of Charlton - a club once homeless, with gates of less than 3000, forced to sell players to pay the wages and to buy replacement kit for the first team, and teetering on the brink of extinction. Galvanised by fans, staff, forward-thinking board members and a shrewd manager, the Addicks now find themselves firmly established with the Premiership big boys and a shining example of how a successful football club should be run. In his book, Curbishley opens the lid on the soap opera that is Charlton FC. He writes about the political manoeuvrings behind the club's departure and then emotional return to The Valley. He describes how the they were torn asunder by drugs allegations involving three of its players, including a youthful Lee Bowyer. He re-lives the tortuous rollercoaster ride of falling out of the Premiership two years later before returning in 1999/2000. And he gives an insider's view of the club's success in establishing itself in the world's toughest league, including a full update on their 2005/06 season. He also talks candidly about being shortlisted for the England manager's job. His book is a radical insight into the workings of a football club and its staff, and is sure to attract widespread interest from football fans across the country.

Sir Alf
Since England's famous 1966 World Cup victory, Alf Ramsey has been regarded as the greatest of all British football managers. By placing Ramsey in an historical context, award-winning author Leo McKinstry provides a thought-provoking insight into the world of professional football and the fabric of British society over the span of his life.Ramsey's life is a romantic story of heroism. Often derided by lesser men, he overcame the prejudice against his social background to reach the summit of world football. The son of a council dustman from Essex, Ramsey had been through a tough upbringing. After army service during the war, he became a professional footballer, enjoying a successful career with Southampton and Tottenham and winning 32 England caps. But it was as manager of Ipswich Town, and then the architect for England's 1966 World Cup triumph, that Ramsey will be most remembered. The tragedy was that his battles with the FA would ultimately lead to his downfall. He was sacked after England failed to qualify for the 1974 World Cup and was subsequently ostracised by the football establishment. He died a broken man in 1999 in the same modest Ipswich semi he'd lived in for most of his life.Drawing on extensive interviews with his closest friends and colleagues in the game, author Leo McKinstry will help unravel the true character of this fascinating and often complex football legend.

Strike Three, You're Out!
Follow the week-by-week progress (or not) of making a baseball team and season work inside San Quentin, one of the most infamous state prisons in the country. See inside the thinking, emotions, and stresses that accompany each inmate's involvement in what is often the most important part of their entire incarceration. Understand why inmates will say and do almost anything to get a chance to play ball and how frustration and disappointment derails them. Find out what "payback" is, how power and authority work, why the sports teams are the only integrated groups, and how baseball entails the search for meaning. There are reasons that there were no other baseball programs in the world like the one in San Quentin. The treatment of the baseball program by the media normally focuses on the lives of the inmate players, and rightly so. But Kent Philpott's treatment of the subject reflects the difficulty of making the program function from the coach's perspective. Kent has provided a very realistic portrait of prison life through the prism of the baseball program with his day-to-day account of the 2010 baseball season. His is a tale of the difficulty of creating a successful prison program, not just because of the inherent problems of managing 25-30 men who happened to have anti-social behavior in their past and present lives but also dealing with a sometimes-hostile set of prison administrators. To expose the public to the humanity of people in prison is also a wonderful thing, and Kent Philpott not only spent many years in San Quentin helping to allow inmates to get through the day, but he was helping to expose the humanity of people in prison to the outside public. Three Strikes, You're Out! will educate many people outside about the realities and virtues of people inside to the ultimate benefit of both.

Amos Alonzo Stagg
Amos Alonzo Stagg (1862-1965) grew up one of eight children in a poor New Jersey family, graduated high school at 21 and worked his way through Yale. His goal was to become a Presbyterian minister, but he dropped out of Yale Divinity School because he felt he could have more influence on young men through coaching. He was hired as the first football coach at University of Chicago after its founding in 1892. Under Stagg's leadership, Chicago emerged as one of the nation's most formidable football teams during the early 20th century, winning seven Big Ten championships and two national championships. After Chicago forced him to retire at 70, Stagg found another coaching position at College of the Pacific, where he was forced to retire at 84. He found another job and never fully retired from coaching until he was 98. His marriage to his wife Stella---his de facto assistant coach--lasted almost 70 years. Sports Illustrated wrote of him, "If any single individual can be said to have created today's game, Stagg is the man. He either invented outright or pioneered every aspect of the modern game from...the huddle, shift and tackling dummy to such refinements as the T-formation strategy." This biography tells the story of his life and many innovations, which made him one of the great pioneers of college football.

Fringes
Updated edition of the #1 Amazon BestsellerLONGLISTED FOR THE WILLIAM HILL SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR PRIZE 2020Sports books tend to detail extraordinary achievements, triumphs against the odds or commemorate World Cup winning captains. This book does not do that. For many, playing professional sport is the Dream Job. Few manage it, very few make it to the top and for the rest, life is very different. This is their story. In Fringes, Ben Mercer invites you to witness life at the outer edges of professional rugby. This is a first hand account of what life is like as a journeyman professional athlete. You play, but to the wider public you don't exist. You earn but you don't drive a flash car. You sometimes pack out a stadium but sometimes, you play in a deserted park. This is the story for the majority of sports professionals. Only the minority taste the top, only one person gets to lift the cup or win the medal, only 15 get to play for England at any one time. For the rest, that's not the case.Ben Mercer is a former professional rugby player who after becoming disillusioned and uninspired plying his trade in the English Second Division, accepted an offer out of the blue to go to France and do something different - help an amateur team turn professional. This is a first hand account of what life is like in the lower reaches of professional sport - where your employment status is as precarious as your health and barely anyone will know your name. It's about how it feels to live year to year, with teammates constantly on the move. It's about how professionalism irreversibly changes the French club Stade Rouennais as they move up the divisions, about the tension between progress and identity in a rugby team. It's also about how it feels to actually be out there on the field, how it feels to occasionally do something extraordinary and how it feels when this is no longer enough for you to make the sacrifices that you need to make to keep playing. There's no ghostwriting, it's an unmitigated meditation on how it feels and what it means to play rugby for a living, to dedicate yourself to an uncompromising but occasionally beautiful game.If you've wanted to know what life is really like as a professional athlete, on the Fringes, away from the glitz and glamour of the international game then look no further.
End of an Era
During the 1970s and -1980s, Widnes RLFC were labeled the 'Cup Kings'. When the team narrowly lost the 199.1 Challenge Cup Final against Wigan, it marked the end of 20 seasons of the Club as a major force in British Rugby League. 'End of an Era' is a chronicle of the last six of those 20 seasons from the 1987/88 until the 1992/93 season. Widnes won two successive Championships, three Premierships, the Lancashire Cup and the World Club Championship in that period.Anthony J. Quinn infers in his book that they could have achieved even more, and perhaps nominated British Rugby League until the advent of Super League in 1996. He suggests the famous World Club Championship victory in 1989 may have had "ramifications". He speculates that it may have cost a third successive Championship and a place in the 1990 Challenge Cup Final, which in turn may have led to the departures of coach Doug Laughton and star winger Martin Offiah from the Club. The author also gives his opinion that the Club should not have signed Jonathan Davies. Whilst acknowledging the Welshman's great performances for Widnes, he writes that his signing was a factor in the Club's financial problems that along with the departures of Laughton and Offiah resulted in an era ending before it should have done.
Cheeky Jurgen's Book of Cheeky Sayings
When five-year-old Annabella saw Jurgen Klopp on her grandfather's TV, she couldn't help noticing that the great football manager was the spitting image of her eccentric, crazy Pappi. She spoke up - and a legend was born. A few tweaks to his outfit and a set of fake teeth later, 'Cheeky Jurgen' was ready to be unleashed on the football-following public. He has hardly been out of the news media since. This is his book, fully interactive, full of jokes and full of fun for footie fans and an ideal stocking filler for all Anfield fans. With a foreword by Jonathan Swain, who says: ''What started as a cheeky selfie with Jurgen Klopp to tease a mate who is a Liverpool fan suddenly became a global talking point where I was the one on the receiving end of being teased. I laughed about it then and still do now. I don't normally ask for selfies but I was excited about the match. 'Jurgen' was standing right there happily posing with other fans, and he seemed approachable, so why not? Talking about being scammed on the telly the next day, was perhaps not the best idea, but great for 'Cheeky Jurgen'. His popularity escalated from posts on social media to mainstream media. Not just in the UK but around the world it seemed everyone loved the story about an experienced TV correspondent being fooled by a Jurgen Klopp look-a-like. He's got the teeth, the hair and the accent, and if asked he could probably pick a decent football team too. Fair play Ray.Enjoy the book, but it's the last time I ask any managers for a selfie, Ja?' - Jonathan Swain, senior news correspondent, Good Morning Britain, ITV Breakfast Television

Baseball Generations
In baseball today, Wins Above Replacement, or WAR, is the go-to tool for measuring player value. But WAR is limited in how it compares different eras, how it handles certain fielding positions, and by the fact that it's a pure compiler stat. Career Value Index (CVI), the new analytic tool developed by David Gordon in his book Baseball Generations, expands on and enhances WAR in a new and compelling way that puts players from Old Hoss Radbourn to Pedro Martinez, Bill Dickey to Johnny Bench, Nap Lajoie to Joe Morgan, and Ty Cobb to Mike Trout on the same statistical plane. Baseball Generations blends cutting-edge number crunching with a witty narrative style reminiscent of Bill James to take readers through every era of major league baseball's 150+ year history-from the founding generation to the analytics generation and everything in between. The result is detailed yet breezy history of the game accompanied by a new ranking of the best to ever play the game.Like every good review of baseball's all-time greats, the Hall of Fame is central to the discussion. Gordon recaps the history of the BBWAA and Veteran's Committee selections, and in the framework of the current Hall of Fame, uses CVI to identify the upper-tier stars, the solid members, the borderline cases, down to the flat-out undeserving-along with the best players on the outside looking in. No matter how many Hall of Fame analyses you've read or arguments you've heard or had, some of the conclusions in Baseball Generations will surprise you. But even if you disagree with Gordon's rankings, the power of CVI and the thorough, context-driven analysis will make them impossible to ignore.
Outside the Lines
Explores the often overlooked role of the NFL in the American civil rights movement Watching a football game on a Sunday evening, most sports fans do not realize the profound impact the National Football League had on the civil rights movement. Similarly, in a sport where seven out of ten players are Black, few are fully aware of the history and contributions of their athletic forebears. Among the touchdowns and tackles lies a rich history of African American life and the struggle to achieve equal rights. Outside the Lines traces how football laid a foundation for social change long before the judicial system formally recognized the inequalities of racial separation. Integrating teams to include white and Black athletes alike fifty years before the reversal of Plessy v Ferguson, the National Football League served as a microcosmic fishbowl of the highs and lows--the trials and triumphs--of racial integration. In this chronicle of the important stories of Black NFL athletes in the early twentieth century, Charles K. Ross has given us an important insight into the role of sports in the fight for racial justice.
