A Matter of Style
Leaving behind a job as a public school teacher, acclaimed writer Scott Sadil (rhymes with cradle)began building Tamalita, a lug-rigged beach yawl suitable for exploring the remote tidewaters of Baja California's Magdalena Bay. Before he could finish planking his new boat, however, Sadil received an email from Gray's Sporting Journal, for the past fifty years America's preeminent hunting and fishing magazine. Gray's needed a writer of Sadil's stature to take over the duties of their angling editor. Would he be interested in applying for the job?A Matter of Style: Flyfishing into the Winds of Change brings together Sadil's columns and feature stories written over his first half decade with Gray's. The author of six previous books, including fiction and nonfiction, Sadil has received wide-reaching praise as both a stylist and humorist, a literary writer whose essays and short stories have been compared favorably with the works of Thomas McGuane, Ted Leeson, Charley Waterman, and other writers of traditional and contemporary outdoor literature. For readers of Gray's, here's the chance to revisit and share all of Scott Sadil's work as the journal's angling editor for the past five years. For anyone else who enjoys the sport of flyfishing, or simply reading about freshwater and saltwater angling adventures from points near and far, A Matter of Style: Flyfishing into the Winds of Change should rise immediately to the top of your must-read book list, an opportunity to pay witness to the spirited highs and lows of flyfishing in our volatile world today.
Cake
Cake: the utterly distinctive memoirs of Shane Curran. In an age when sportsmen have perfected the art of saying nothing and suppressing any trace of personality Shane 'Cake' Curran is a beacon of light: passionate outspoken utterly himself. As a rare two-code goalkeeper - for Roscommon in Gaelic football and for Athlone Town in soccer - he made his own rules soloing mesmerisingly out of goal inventing a new style of kicking tee and famously poaching a penalty kick a teammate had lined up in the 1989 Connacht minor final. Brave honest and hilarious Cake tells the story of an Irish sportsman who has lived the dream in his own utterly distinctive way. Squash Rackets
Originally published in 1949, in Squash Rackets, Mr Hankinson produced something that was outstanding. The written description was reduced to a minimum, and the teaching was built up round the photographs - and these were remarkable for the time. For the first time action photographs illustrated all the strokes in squash rackets, and the young player who acted as model did his work excellently. Not content with that, the author and his photographer, used their ingenuity in providing excellent photographs to illustrate the tactical side of the game. A model court was constructed, and, as players, two realistic puppets were used. The result was a series of photographs which not only explain the tactics, but also looked most convincing. The author's previous titles had been very successful, and this attractive and ingenious book was a welcome addition to the series. Today it can be enjoyed in its historical context.

The Believer
The author of the instant fishing classic The Optimist shares new wisdom, humor, and experience in seven extraordinary fly-fishing expeditions--"an engaging personal journey about finding what you need to find and keeping it in your heart" (Kirkus Reviews). In The Optimist, David Coggins tackled the techniques of fly-fishing and meditated on its virtues, recounting his triumphs and failures. Now, in The Believer, he deftly mixes travel, local cultures, further fishing challenges (some knee-buckling in their disappointment), and details his own experience as life and love crowd his time to fish. Self-consciously--and self-deprecatingly--Coggins embarks on seven far-flung fishing voyages, away from screens and social media, not answering his phone, and reveling in humanity's undying yearning for a quest, for the rituals and rites of passage that mark transition. For Coggins, these journeys--to Norway, Scotland, Spain, Cuba, and Argentina, as well as road trips to Wyoming, Tennessee, and the Catskills--not only showcase his skill as an angler but also signal the end of his fly-fishing youth. But that doesn't mean that Coggins will sell all his rods and hang up his hat; rather, his relationship with his fly-fishing obsession will evolve--especially if he can catch an elusive salmon or a ferociously strong tarpon or the mercurial permit. The Believer is a humble, humorous call for the journey that is as enriching as the destination, where the search for greater self-awareness leads to patience, observation, and endurance. And, since this is fly-fishing, after all, there's always the possibility of abject failure and leaping, glorious reward. Wry, entertaining, thoughtful, and relatable, The Believer is "a wonderful example of how well angling can weave us into the world" (Gray's Sporting Journal) and will hook both anglers and non-anglers alike.
Ball in My Hands
When David K. Wiggins released his first anthology of previously published essays on race and sport in 1997, African American athletes were receiving more popular interest and scholarly attention. The growth of sport history as an academic discipline, combined with an increased interest in Black life and history, had led to the publication of numerous biographies of African American athletes, studies on Negro League Baseball, and one survey text on the Black athletic experience, to name a few. Almost thirty years later, Wiggins's second anthology is a comprehensive collection that examines the complex intersection of race, sport, and American culture, discussing the experiences, challenges, and victories of Black athletes throughout the twentieth century. Featuring eleven previously published essays, Ball in My Hands: Black Athletes, Race, and American Culture weaves storytelling and scholarly discussion together in its exploration of well-known figures like Olympic decathlon champion Milt Campbell, professional tennis icon Arthur Ashe, Olympic sprinter Vince Matthews, civil rights activist Harry Edwards, basketball legend Kobe Bryant, and more. In his final essay, Wiggins reflects on his experiences as a White scholar who has spent his forty-year academic career analyzing and writing about experiences of African Americans in sport and the interconnection among race, sport, and American culture. With an original introduction and a foreword from Damion L. Thomas, Museum Curator of Sports at the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture, Ball in My Hands is not simply a collection of biographies on individual athletes or write-ups on athletic institutions--rather, it offers a wide-ranging discussion of the history and meaning of African American sport that will engage not only scholars of African American history and sport history, but educators, sports enthusiasts, and general readers alike.
So Great Was the Slaughter
An account of the rise of sportsmen and conservation groups in Arkansas who made common cause to save the state's wildlife resourcesSo Great Was the Slaughter reveals the untold story of Arkansas conservation pioneers who saved the state's game and fish populations. As Arkansas entered the twentieth century, the national demand for meat combined with the ability to ship millions of animals to hungry cities like New Orleans, Memphis, and Chicago had driven many species, including bison and passenger pigeons, to extinction in Arkansas. Many others, including deer, bear, turkey, quail, and fish, were in danger of disappearing. In response, an unlikely coalition of Arkansas sportsmen, hunters, and conservationists created a vision for conservation legislation, game laws, and the establishment of fish hatcheries and wildlife refuges. With support from influential outsiders like E. A. McIlhenny and the United States Biological Survey, they waged a long battle against entrenched political and commercial interests. Buckley Foster's meticulous research reveals how these pioneers fought to save the state's wildlife resources from destruction and laid the foundations for sustainable, modern wildlife management in Arkansas. So Great Was the Slaughter will fascinate hunters, conservationists, historians, and those interested in the history of wildlife conservation and conflicts between market hunters and sportsmen in the United States and the American South.

A Very Incomplete Guide to the North Downs Way
Mountaineering Women
As adventure sports like climbing and mountaineering become popular, women's visibility in the sport has also grown. Mountaineering Women is a richly illustrated collection of the awesome and often surprising stories celebrating the achievements of twenty women climbers from across the globe. From the Amazigh (Berbers) of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco to the Inca Empire, high in the Andes, women have long traversed the world's most forbidding peaks. When, many centuries later, mountaineering took off as a sporting activity in the West, it was plucky Victorian women who defied convention to tackle the fabled summits of the European Alps. Yet despite the fact that women have a pronounced and rich history in the sport, they are conspicuously underrepresented in mountaineering literature. Mountaineering Women seeks to readdress a narrative that frequently focuses on the exploits of white, male "explorers." The climbers come from a wide range of nationalities, and each of their compelling stories is accompanied by a specially commissioned ink illustration and evocative black-and-white photographs. Three sixteen--page full--color photographic sections, meanwhile, reveal the mountaineers in action in mountainscapes in all their grandeur.Bookending the main chapters is a comprehensive introduction, written by Nandini Purandare, editor of the internationally renowned Himalayan Journal, and a closing essay by professional climber Ashima Shiraishi, looking toward the future of the sport.

Advanced Fly Fishing for Great Lakes Steelhead
The Great Lakes Steelhead Fishery is one of the best in the world, providing year-round opportunities to catch steelhead, salmon, and brown trout on a fly. Advanced Fly Fishing for Great Lakes Steelhead is the most up-to-date book on strategy and technique, and as well as providing a foundation for all types of fly anglers, covers more advanced concepts such as how to effectively use switch and two-handed rods, swinging flies, and new fly patterns by some of the region's top tiers. In addition, Kustich covers strategy, which is perhaps the most important chapter of all, sharing his thoughts--from over thirty years of Great Lakes steelheading--on timing the run, avoiding fishing pressure, selecting a river, reading the water, developing a plan, and much more. A destinations section rounds out the book with a look at need-to-know information for top steelhead spots in Ontario, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.
Open Play
A thought-provoking manifesto arguing for the end of gender segregation in athletics. Sheree Bekker and Stephen Mumford argue that the category of "women's sports" is not the feminist win some would have you believe. Instead, the segregation of women in sports is just one of the many ways in which women are told to expect less from society. Women had to fight to be included in sports in the first place, and are now only included under far less favorable terms than those enjoyed by men. There are better ways to ensure safety and fairness, the authors make clear, than segregation by gender. And this matters deeply: ending gender segregation would encourage a more equitable distribution of resources, increase women's participation in sports, and challenge outdated, sexist myths about women and their bodies.
Stronger
A groundbreaking, richly informative exploration of the central role of muscle in human life and health, Stronger sounds an urgent call for each of us to recognize muscle as "the vital, inextricable and effective partner of the soul." "Even if you've never picked up a weight--Stronger is for you." --Arnold Schwarzenegger Stronger tells a story of breathtaking scope, from the battlefields of the Trojan War in Homer's Iliad, where muscles enter the scene of world literature; to the all-but-forgotten Victorian-era gyms on both sides of the Atlantic, where women build strength and muscle by lifting heavy weights; to a retirement home in Boston, where a young doctor makes the astonishing discovery that frail ninety-year-olds can experience the same relative gains of strength and muscle as thirty-year-olds if they lift weights. These surprising tales play out against a background of clashing worldviews, an age-old competition between athletic trainers and medical doctors to define our understanding and experience of muscle. In this conflict, muscle got typecast: Simplistic binaries of brain versus brawn created a persistent prejudice against muscle, and against weight training, the type of exercise that best builds muscular strength and power. Stronger shows muscle and weight training in a whole new light. With warmth and humor, Michael Joseph Gross blends history and firsthand reporting in an inspiring narrative packed with practical information based on rigorous scientific studies from around the world. The research proves that weight training can help prevent or treat many chronic diseases and disabilities throughout the lifespan, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis, and depression. Stronger reveals how all of us, from elite powerlifters to people who have never played sports at all, can learn to lift weights in ways that yield life's ultimate prize: the ability to act upon the world in the ways that we wish.
