Stronger
A groundbreaking, richly informative exploration of the central role of muscle in human life and health, Stronger sounds an urgent call for each of us to recognize muscle as "the vital, inextricable and effective partner of the soul." "Even if you've never picked up a weight--Stronger is for you." --Arnold Schwarzenegger Stronger tells a story of breathtaking scope, from the battlefields of the Trojan War in Homer's Iliad, where muscles enter the scene of world literature; to the all-but-forgotten Victorian-era gyms on both sides of the Atlantic, where women build strength and muscle by lifting heavy weights; to a retirement home in Boston, where a young doctor makes the astonishing discovery that frail ninety-year-olds can experience the same relative gains of strength and muscle as thirty-year-olds if they lift weights. These surprising tales play out against a background of clashing worldviews, an age-old competition between athletic trainers and medical doctors to define our understanding and experience of muscle. In this conflict, muscle got typecast: Simplistic binaries of brain versus brawn created a persistent prejudice against muscle, and against weight training, the type of exercise that best builds muscular strength and power. Stronger shows muscle and weight training in a whole new light. With warmth and humor, Michael Joseph Gross blends history and firsthand reporting in an inspiring narrative packed with practical information based on rigorous scientific studies from around the world. The research proves that weight training can help prevent or treat many chronic diseases and disabilities throughout the lifespan, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis, and depression. Stronger reveals how all of us, from elite powerlifters to people who have never played sports at all, can learn to lift weights in ways that yield life's ultimate prize: the ability to act upon the world in the ways that we wish.
Pheasant Tail Simplicity
Together, these anglers have nearly 200 years of fly fishing experience. They've tried -- and refined -- it all, so you can catch fish -- anywhere, any time, with just one type of fly. Angling afficionados and authors Chouinard, Mathews, and Mazzo join together again to reveal the secret to successful fly fishing: the pheasant tail fly. In Simple Fly Fishing (Patagonia, 2014; 2018), they made the case for replacing unnecessary gear with knowledge and technique. Now, after years of continuing to experiment and simplify, they offer the next step: the feathers that can be used to tie any kind of fly: nymphs, dry flies, emergers, and beetles. Conceived as an advanced follow-up to Simple Fly Fishing, Pheasant Tail Simplicity focuses on essential fly patterns that all share one critical ingredient--pheasant tail. The book explores the techniques required to tie and present these flies to trout, anadromous, and saltwater species. More than just a guide, it challenges the industry norm that thousands of fly patterns are necessary to catch fish. Instead, it distills fly fishing to its core: one shared fly tying ingredient, a handful of techniques, and a mindset that prioritizes knowledge, craft, and creativity over all else. The book includes 18 detailed fly recipes, with ingredients lists and step-by-step photos.Wet Fly Patterns: Flymph, Bead Head Flymph, Soft Hackle, Soft Hackle Dry Fly, Trico SpinnerNymph Patterns: Nymph, Bead Head Nymph, Jig, Red Tag, CaddisDry Fly Patterns: Mayfly Emerger, Sparkle Dun, Mayfly Spinner, Iris Caddis, X Caddis, Zelon Midge, Foam BeetleSaltwater Pattern: Bonefish Then they tell how to use this one type of fly to catch any kind of fish. In concise text, with instructional photos throughout and QR codes that link to how-to videos for tying and fishing with these flies, this book and its techniques force you to rely on your skills and to be creative to be successful. You will catch fish as you never have before.

LeConte Lodge
Of the 13 million visitors who annually flock to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, fewer than one in a thousand are fortunate enough to spend a night at the LeConte Lodge. Continuing over 100 years of service, Eastern America's highest lodge still operates with a waiting list, thriving so far off the grid that laundry is transported by llamas and food is ferried in by helicopter. Visitors must brave one of six trails to the Lodge's entrance, the shortest of which is five miles. Despite its remote location in Tennessee, LeConte Lodge remains a prominent tourist destination as it celebrates its centennial. Written by two journalists who have been making the trek for decades, this book reveals a history that predates the establishment of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The book features stories that contextualize the Lodge's development, from the log bunkhouse that marked the property in the 1920s to the flourishing Lodge there today. It also explores the history of Mount Le Conte, the namesake peak that houses the Lodge.

Testament of a Trout Fisher
Laurence Catlow writes here on many subjects close to his fisher's heart: the contrast between fishing in early spring and in autumn, the realisation that mayfly fishing is not as easy as it seems, views on flies, on fishing in an opposing wind, low or high water, holiday fishing, why a brace of trout matters so much, and why small wild trout can mean so much to an angler. He sums up: 'Anyway, throughout this book I have been trying to come to some sort of understanding about why this whole business of catching trout means so much to me and why, after fifty years spent catching trout in fair numbers, I find an even deeper satisfaction in catching them now than I did as a young fisher when they were caught much less frequently and were therefore individually much more important. I hope that I have managed some insights but it seems to me that there is always more to be seen and more to be said.'
Cast, Catch, Release
For fans of Cheryl Strayed's Wild and Helen Macdonald's H Is for Hawk, a lyrical memoir and "engaging, endearing, deeply felt" (David Coggins) ode to the art of fly fishing and how it can shape a life--by renowned female angler and conservationist Marina Gibson. As her twenty-first birthday approached, Marina Gibson received a unique gift suggestion from her parents, who offered her a choice between fishing rods or jewelry. In an unconventional decision, she opted for fishing rods. Her intention was to rekindle a childhood passion and carry on a family tradition initiated by her mother, who had dedicated years to pursuing salmon in the rivers of the Scottish Highlands. As fishing overtook Marina's life and evolved into a full-time career, she became enraptured by the silent mysteries of the river and the quiet magic of angling. The complexity of fly fishing and the rituals of casting provided her refuge from a failing marriage, giving her a reliable source of comfort that benefited both her mind and soul. It also revealed the barriers that exist for women trying to make it in a tradition-bound and male-dominated world. Tracing the epic, migratory journey of the Atlantic salmon alongside the ups and downs of her personal story, Cast, Catch, Release brings to life the joys of fishing, the spirited quest of the angler, and how these two paths meet on lakes and riverbanks around the world. A love letter to this exhilarating yet serene sport, Gibson shows what it means to find peace and purpose amidst the majesty of the great outdoors.

Blood and Thunder
Liam O'Callaghan's revelatory Blood and Thunder shows that the rise of Irish rugby is inextricable from the tensions, debates and divisions - of politics, religion and class - that have defined modern Irish history. Despite the political partition of the island, Ireland competes at rugby internationally with an all-island team - and with a bespoke anthem that nobody loves but everyone tolerates. Ireland has become a leading rugby nation despite its tiny population and the fact that the sport is only the fourth most popular team game on the island by participation. In Blood and Thunder, O'Callaghan traces the dramatic evolution whereby a rugby nation that was deeply attached to amateurism has made such a dramatic success of professionalism. From the sequence of events that led Ireland's private Catholic secondary schools to embrace rugby, to the controversies and crises that have shaken Irish rugby - including the Northern Troubles, the Belfast rape trial, and the rising toll of head injuries - Blood and Thunder tells the rich and fascinating story of Irish rugby. Blood and Thunder is more than a social and political history of Irish rugby. It is also a shadow-history of modern Ireland, rooted in brilliant original research and packed with terrific stories. ---'Excellent' Sunday Times 'Rigorously researched and incisively written ... Blood and Thunder should be on every team bus.' John O'Donnell, Irish Times 'The whole book is a delight.' Ciaran Murphy 'Excellent ... O'Callaghan willingly challenges any hyperbole about the sport's appeal here just as he keenly seeks to identify and explain some of the wonders of that reach' Kieran Shannon, Irish Examiner 'I really enjoyed it.' Ken Early 'O'Callaghan's history of Irish rugby is a superb excavation of the place of that sport in Irish life.' Paul Rouse, Irish Examiner 'Entertaining and informative' Michael Taylor, TLS
From Platberg to Kilimanjaro
Harry started his journey to climb Africa's three highest mountains on Platberg. On his way to the summit of Kilimanjaro, he also climbed in Tenerife, Morocco, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Kenya. But long before that, as a child, he stood on the summit of Mont-aux-Sources, and thought he was on top of the world. On his travels, he argued with park authorities who refused to let him climb Teide in Tenerife - because it had snow on it! Got scrubbed in a hammam in Tangiers by a matronly figure. Who washed everywhere - yes, even there... Drank tea with a marijuana farmer in the Rif Mountains. Drove in the driver's cabin of an African train through Kenyan plains. Crossed the Tanzanian border on the back of a Boda-boda (motorcycle taxi). And diced with death on buses that 'sidestepped' oncoming traffic like professional bullfighters on Kenyan roads. On Jbel Toubkal his fingers got so cold they stopped working. In the Simien mountains he became a language teacher. And finally, on Kilimanjaro, where a simple bite on an energy bar left him breathless, he wondered why he took so long to get around to climbing this spell-binding mountain. Harry shares some of the problems he's had with trekking organisers. Like running out of food on the Rwenzori mountains. Handing over tips for porters that were apparently part of the trek but were never seen. Having to put up with inefficient equipment on Kilimanjaro. He details each day's trekking destination, distance and height gained. He briefly tells the history of the first ascents and naming of the peaks. And shares observations made along the way. Some of which will make you smile and others which will touch you emotionally. It's part travel story, part guidebook. With information for both the prospective trekker and the armchair traveller.
Fly Fishing Pressured Waters
Fishing pressure on the popular western waters is at an all-time high and to be able to have a successful day on the water, anglers have had to adjust their strategies, tactics, and equipment. In this book, Nick Conklin and Collins Illich share their vast experience fishing the West (and bring in techniques from their experience fishing other areas around the country) and teach readers more advanced level techniques and approaches to become more proficient on highly trafficked waters chasing PhD level fish. While the emphasis is western US waters, the techniques can be applied to any angler's local water. The key here is addressing the rise in angling pressure and how to overcome common ideas and obstacles to become a more effective angler.

You need a new set of rules and, to understand the implications of the changes, you need a guide to them.Rules in Practice has been the best-selling guide to the racing rules of sailing for the last 40 years. Now, in its 11th edition, it has been updated for (and contains in full) the 2025-2028 Racing Rules of Sailing. To begin, Rules in Practice describes the latest rule changes and their implications for sailors. The book then covers the fundamental rules that always apply to sailors along with a detailed look at the rules around luffing and keeping clear - which were an eye-opener to many sailors when they were first published in the last edition. As always, throughout the book, the emphasis is on the practical impact on you as a sailor, rather than a theoretical discussion of the rules themselves. This is brought to life in the rest of the book, which takes you around the racecourse, from start to finish, through the key situations that frequently occur showing, from the point of view of each boat in turn, what you may, must or must not do. (Other rules guides take you through the rules in order which is just not how you come across them on the racecourse.)You don't have to know all the rules off by heart, but you do need to know your rights and obligations on the water - the rules can be looked up afterwards. This knowledge will build your confidence while racing and enable you to make the most of opportunities when they arise.Colour diagrams throughout ensure concepts are easily understood. If you are going to buy one rule book - make it this one!
Surviving the Trail
Equip yourself with the knowledge to avoid common hiking hazards and stay safe on the trail The statistics are difficult to believe, but every week more than ten hikers die and at least another two hundred require rescue in North America, amounting to more than 500 lives lost and more than 10,000 people rescued every year. Analysis reveals they span the full spectrum of trail experience. The silver lining among this alarming data reveals that most hiker deaths and rescues come from just a handful of preventable causes. This presents an opportunity for this book to make a significant impact. Despite a number of articles published over the years in the attempt to raise trail-goers' awareness of this issue, the data remain unchanged. Every week, hundreds continue to fight to survive among avoidable circumstances while awaiting overwhelmed and understaffed wilderness rescue teams. The most common reasons for hiker death and rescue are falling, drowning, dehydration, heat injury, hypothermia, and a lost hiker. Many hikers venture out inadequately prepared, possess a limited skill set, and exhibit poor decision-making when problems arise. That's what Dr. Scanlon's Surviving the Trail is intended to prevent and--if something untoward happens--ameliorate.

Tying Euro Nymphs and Other Competition Favorites
Perhaps no other area in fly fishing has experienced as much sensation, and growth, as "Euro Nymphing." This term, which is actually not the most accurate but has been the one that has stuck, describes a broad category of nymphing (fishing flies under the water as opposed to on top of the water) techniques from around the world--Czech, Polish, Spanish, French, as well as American--brought to the forefront by the rise of fly fishing competitions. This pioneering fly tying book focuses on teaching the most popular patterns in this category and includes approximately 15 flies with over 350 full-color tying steps.

You fall off and pull back on and fall off again. You care enough to ask why. You learn. You adapt. I've tried. I've made mistakes and tried again. I've asked why. I've learned a lot of lessons. I've adapted."This is that story. These are those lessons.
Inventing the Boston Game
On Boston Common stands a monument dedicated to the Oneida Football Club. It honors the site where, in the 1860s, sixteen boys played what was then called the "Boston game"--an early version of football in the United States. The boys were largely the sons of upper-class Boston Brahmins, and they lived through the transformative periods of the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Gilded Age. Later as they grew old, in the 1920s, a handful of them orchestrated a series of commemorative events about their boyhood game. Benefitting from elite networks developed through the city's social and educational institutions, including Harvard University, they donated artifacts (such as an oddly shaped, battered black ball) to museums, deposited self-penned histories into libraries and archives, and erected bronze and stone memorials, all to elevate themselves as the inventors of American football (and later, by extension, soccer). But was this origin story of what, by then, had become one of America's favorite games as straightforward as they made it seem or a myth-making hoax? In Inventing the Boston Game, Kevin Tallec Marston and Mike Cronin investigate the history of the Oneida Football Club and reveal what really happened. In a compelling, well told narrative that is informed by sports history, Boston history, and the study of memory, they posit that these men engaged in self-memorialization to reinforce their elite cultural status during a period of tremendous social and economic change, and particularly increased immigration. This exploration of the Club's history provides fascinating insight into how and why origin stories are created in the first place.

Peters & King
Peters & King is the authoritative and most complete history of two important and related American shooting sports companies: Peters Cartridge Company and its parent, the King Powder Company. Thomas D. Schiffer's carefully researched and well-illustrated work details their early histories and, especially, their development into premier manufacturers of sporting ordnance. While filled with the technological and legal history of Peters & King, the book is also a history of a particular place and its people: Kings Mills, just north of Cincinnati, Ohio. For nearly a century, the massive cartridge plant, with its dozens of buildings and improvements, and the company town King built, dominated this small part of Warren County, nestled on the banks of the Little Miami River. Massive concrete, brick, and steel remnants of Peters & King still stand today, developed and repurposed for the 21st century. This edition includes a new Afterword by the author that explains how the Peters & King site became a refurbished commercial hub, housing luxury apartments & a microbrewery, all serviced by a long-needed new bridge across the Little Miami River. This book remains a valuable resource for a variety of people: sportsmen, collectors, and those interested in the history of Kings Mills.

In These Veins
This book was conceived as a means of documenting some of my life experiences to be read by my children and grandchildren, but it gradually morphed into much more. It is, in fact, primarily about my lifelong love affair with farming.I have a spiritual affinity with nature, sunrises, the earth, and dirt. Most mornings my wife encourages me to "go outside and play," as she knows that growing and tending plants and trees charges my batteries and keeps my juices flowing. Farming is in my soul and in my veins. Blues singer John Lee Hooker captured it best when he sang, "It's in him, and it got to come out."Fifty independent, natural essays cover a range of topics, among them how not to trap a rabbit, the exhilaration of a thirteen-year-old racing his first car through a corn field, and how the strong work ethic of a Dutch national immigrant had an immense influence on me. I describe the excitement of anticipating the summer's first garden-ripened tomato, get you to see how old stone walls can be appreciated and viewed in a different light, and try to convince you that gravity is your friend. I share with you the love of having a farm dog, the childish giddiness of a seventy-year-old torquing the throttle of a bulldozer, the frustrations of having Mother Nature be your boss, and the many frequent and often simple successes enjoyed by farmers. It is my hope that you will be entertained, uplifted, and educated by reading about my seventy-year agricultural journey. I hope to convince you that farm life is stimulating, that it teaches us many new skills, and that its rewards are accessible - at some level - to everyone. I will be rewarded if, when you finish reading, you want to get into your car, find the nearest farm store and stock up on veggie seeds for next spring's garden.Gardeners, farmers, and people who love nature, farm markets, science, and tractors will enjoy reading this book.
In My Element
SHORTLISTED FOR THE MARITIME FOUNDATION AWARD FOR BEST BOOK'An entertaining and compelling page turner that will stay with you.' Pete GossThe boat picks up another wave and surfs again, faster this time, deafening. My eyes are streaming, sore from the icy wind that throws spray in my face. And over the top of it all I can hear my own laughter. I feel powerful, strong. I am a thousand miles from land in one of the world's most dangerous environments. Alone and free. The Vend矇e Globe Race is one of the world's toughest sporting events: a single-handed, non-stop lap of the planet, with no assistance. The route takes competitors around the fringes of Antarctica, tackling terrifying conditions in the Southern Ocean before rounding Cape Horn. In My Element is the gripping and uncompromising story of Pip's incredible journey, but it's about so much more than sailing. A thousand miles from land and surviving on only 30 minutes of sleep at a time, with both skipper and vessel relentlessly pushed to the brink of failure, Pip tells it straight, acknowledging that success never comes without mistakes and mishaps and these challenges do not mean defeat; they are opportunities to learn and grow. This, her first book, is both a gripping record of one of her toughest races ever and an inspiring account of the mental and physical strategies that have allowed her to discover, as a middle-aged woman, a life that allows her to live 'in flow' and achieve success. From embracing fear to managing anxiety, enduring the daily grind whilst appreciating the pure magic, pacing yourself and rising to the occasion, Pip's journey teaches the importance of seizing every moment and truly living in your element.
Stugotz's Personal Record Book
Sports radio legend Stugotz rewrites the record books, taking rings away from undeserving champions and giving them to the rightful winners. "I've been accused of rooting against every team in America, but I am rooting FOR Stugotz's Personal Record Book."--Joe Buck Without Tom Brady, Bill Belichick is a worse head coach than Herm Edwards. Kevin Durant has no rings. Rafael Nadal is not on the Mount Rushmore of men's tennis. For years, popular sports radio personality Stugotz has been telling fans that he keeps a "personal record book," a kind of alternate sports universe in which Babe Ruth is not a great Yankee, Sean McVay has no rings, and Joe Namath is not in the Hall of Fame, to name just a few of his sacred proclamations. As Stugotz hilariously renders his controversial judgments with the steely conviction of a psychopath, what might seem like broadsides meant to rattle the cages of avid sports fans are transformed into shockingly wise, well-considered arguments that, taken together, form a radical revision of sports history. Prepare to be wildly entertained as he shows where flash and hype have replaced integrity and sportsmanship. He takes rings away and gives new ones out, reframes some of history's most iconic games, and declares entire sports dead (sorry, horse racing). He even invites some of the biggest names in sports media, such as Scott Van Pelt and Mina Kimes, to offer their rebuttals. By taking on the legends of basketball, baseball, hockey, soccer, and tennis, Stugotz leaves no stone unturned--and no sport unscathed.
Favorite Flies for the Upper Midwest
This new entry in the Stackpole Favorite Flies series covers flies for the Upper Midwest--Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. This area has fishing that is very different than the rest of the Midwest (Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois), and Jerry Darkes leads anglers through it. The Favorite Flies series pulls together fifty important (either from a historical or fishing or both standpoint) flies from a particular region, tied by anglers with close ties and local knowledge of the place. Each fly featured in a spread that includes large, easy to see image, recipe, tying notes, and a supplemental image or possibly a few tying steps if a technique needs to be illustrated. This book, though not a tying manual, showcases important flies that work well on the water for a given area and a fishing/tying resource and tribute to the region.
