Competitive balance and revenue sharing in European football. Some novel insights
Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Sport - Sport Economics, Sport Management, grade: 2.0, University of Leipzig (Institute for Empirical Research in Economics), language: English, abstract: This thesis will provide the reader with a good understanding of the economic forces in the modern sports industry with a focus on European Football. The reader will be introduced to the most common measures of Competitive Balance and the existing literature on the topic. Equipped with this knowledge, the paper takes the reader on a recap of the European top leagues history with a focus on the Competitive Balance beginning in 1980. The final chapter then provides an econometric deep dive into the data for the Bundesliga. The commercialization of European football strongly accelerated in the early 1990s and brought tremendous revenue increases to the industry. Rapidly, broadcasting revenues became the clubs' main source of income. Some professional football leagues jointly sell their teams broadcasting rights as bundles and share the incomes with a certain degree of solidarity among them. This study tries to find evidence for the positive impact of such revenue sharing agreements on the competitive balance in Europe's strongest football leagues. Therefore, a newly developed measure is applied, which contains combined information about leagues absolute level of competitive balance as well as relative changes in standings over time. The results of the study mainly speak in favor of an enhancement of solidarity among teams, because of its positive impact on competitive balance and thus on a leagues attractiveness to customers.

Across Mongolian Plains
Across Mongolian Plains-A Naturalists Account of China's "Great Northwest" is a gripping Asian travel diary by Roy Chapman Andrews. This Asian travelogue is the narrative of our work and travels. "I have written it entirely from the sportsman's standpoint and have purposely avoided scientific details which would prove uninteresting or wearisome to the general public."Roy Chapman Andrews (January 26, 1884 - March 11, 1960) was an American explorer, adventurer and naturalist who became the director of the American Museum of Natural History.[1] He is primarily known for leading a series of expeditions through the politically disturbed China of the early 20th century into the Gobi Desert and Mongolia. The expeditions made important discoveries and brought the first-known fossil dinosaur eggs to the museum. His popular writings about his adventures made him famous. From 1909 to 1910, Andrews sailed on the USS Albatross to the East Indies, collecting snakes and lizards and observing marine mammals. In 1913, he sailed aboard the schooner Adventuress with owner John Borden to the Arctic. They were hoping to obtain a bowhead whale specimen for the American Museum of Natural History. On this expedition, he filmed some of the best footage of seals ever seen, though did not succeed in acquiring a whale specimen. He married Yvette Borup in 1914. From 1916 to 1917, Andrews and his wife led the Asiatic Zoological Expedition of the museum through much of western and southern Yunnan, as well as other provinces of China. The book Camps and Trails in China records their experiences. In 1920, Andrews began planning for expeditions to Mongolia and drove a fleet of Dodge cars westward from Peking. In 1922, the party discovered a fossil of Indricotherium (then named "Baluchitherium"), a gigantic hornless rhinoceros, which was sent back to the museum, arriving on December 19. The fossil species Andrewsarchus was named after him. Andrews, along with Henry Fairfield Osborn, was a proponent of the Out of Asia theory of humanity's origins and led several expeditions to Asia from 1922 to 1928 known as the "Central Asiatic Expeditions" to search for the earliest human remains in Asia.
Two Wheels Good
A panoramic revisionist portrait of the nineteenth-century invention that is transforming the twenty-first-century world "Excellent . . . calls to mind Bill Bryson, John McPhee, Rebecca Solnit."--The New York Times Book Review (Editors' Choice) ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The New Yorker The bicycle is a vestige of the Victorian era, seemingly at odds with our age of smartphones and ride-sharing apps and driverless cars. Yet we live on a bicycle planet. Across the world, more people travel by bicycle than any other form of transportation. Almost anyone can learn to ride a bike--and nearly everyone does. In Two Wheels Good, journalist and critic Jody Rosen reshapes our understanding of this ubiquitous machine, an ever-present force in humanity's life and dream life--and a flash point in culture wars--for more than two hundred years. Combining history, reportage, travelogue, and memoir, Rosen's book sweeps across centuries and around the globe, unfolding the bicycle's saga from its invention in 1817 to its present-day renaissance as a "green machine," an emblem of sustainability in a world afflicted by pandemic and climate change. Readers meet unforgettable characters: feminist rebels who steered bikes to the barricades in the 1890s, a prospector who pedaled across the frozen Yukon to join the Klondike gold rush, a Bhutanese king who races mountain bikes in the Himalayas, a cycle-rickshaw driver who navigates the seething streets of the world's fastest-growing megacity, astronauts who ride a floating bicycle in zero gravity aboard the International Space Station. Two Wheels Good examines the bicycle's past and peers into its future, challenging myths and clich矇s while uncovering cycling's connection to colonial conquest and the gentrification of cities. But the book is also a love letter: a reflection on the sensual and spiritual pleasures of bike riding and an ode to an engineering marvel--a wondrous vehicle whose passenger is also its engine.

Hell for Leather
From the 1960s until the turn of the century, Phil Wilkins was chief cricket writer in turn for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Sun-Herald, then The Australian and The Sun newspapers. In this autobiography, he remembers great players watched and interviewed, historic events, reviving memories of cricketers, rugby league, rugby union and soccer players, of boxers and tennis titleholders. Among his cavalcade of champions are Rod Laver, Ian and Greg Chappell, Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson, Bob Simpson, Bill Lawry and Shane Warne; England's Freddie Trueman, Ian Botham, Colin Cowdrey and Geoffrey Boycott, the West Indies' Vivian Richards, Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes, the Pakistanis, Javed Miandad and Imran Khan, the Indians, Bishan Singh Bedi and Sunil Gavaskar, and earlier Australian immortals, Keith Miller, Ray Lindwall and Norman O'Neill; in rugby league, Johnny Raper, Ron Coote, Reg Gasnier, Harry Wells and Bobby Fulton; in rugby union, Ray Price and Ken Catchpole, Ewen McKenzie and Phil Kearns, Tim Horan and Jason Little, David Campese and Nick Farr-Jones, all match-winners and game-breakers, the mightiest of performers. But the first of his greats was Melbourne's Australian Rules captain and later coach, the splendid Ron Barassi.Above all players, Wilkins praises his littlest hero, the fearless nine-year-old Guyanese boy, Dominic, who saved his life by throwing himself at a pipe-wielding thug at the height of a riot in the World Series Cricket match in Georgetown on the "Forgotten tour" of 1979, when the Australians drew the SuperTest series with Clive Lloyd's world champion West Indians.

The Mountain Path

And I was certain that if I did drift off, it would be for the last time.'In 1998, Paul Pritchard was struck on the head by a falling rock as he climbed a sea stack in Tasmania called the Totem Pole. Close to death, waiting for hours for rescue, Pritchard kept himself going with a promise that given the chance, he would 'at least attempt to live'.Left hemiplegic by his injury, Pritchard has spent the last two decades attempting to live, taking on adventures that seemed impossible for someone so badly injured while plumbing the depths of a mind almost snuffed out by his passion for climbing. Not content to simply survive, Pritchard finds ways to return to his old life, cycling across Tibet and expanding his mind on gruelling meditation courses, revisiting the past and understanding his compulsion for risk. Finally, he returns to climb the Totem Pole, the place where his life was almost extinguished. The Mountain Path is an adventure book like no other, an exploration of a healing brain, a journey into philosophy and psychology, a test of will and a triumph of hope.
Got Your Number
ESPN personality (Get Up and #Greeny) and New York Times bestselling author Mike Greenberg partners with mega-producer Hembo to settle once and for all which legends flat-out own which numbers. In short essays certain to provoke debate between and amongst all generations, Greeny uses his lifetime of sports knowledge to spin yarns of the legends among the legends and tell you why some have claimed their spot in the top 100 of all time. Sports and numbers go hand in hand. Sports and loud, assertive debate? Even better. Cheering on, agonizing over, and being in plain awe of your favorite players has left you with a deep and intricate memory of their greatness, not to mention well-honed arguments as to why your favorites are really the best. In arenas, in front of your TV, and in bars, you've debated friends and strangers alike. You've joyfully mocked your friends' (sometimes laughable) favorites. You've spouted accomplishments, statistics: Yours won six titles, batted .350 in the clutch, or generated 82% of their team's scoring. But not all numbers are created equal. Some are accomplishments. Others are identity. Looming large over any image you have of an athlete: the number on their jersey. Numbers often provide the most visceral parts of any sports legend's identity. They are what people remember--worldwide. Jordan, Jeter, Brady--to fans, they are as much their number as they are anything else. Sure, 1 through 100 might seem like a large range, but fierce competition across the ages has blessed only a lucky few to claim one of these as their own. For some, the victors may not be so obvious. That's why Greeny's here to help. Ascend into discussion, fans of all stripes. Come away enlightened. Or maybe a little enraged. Either way, you are sure to be occasionally surprised--and endlessly entertained. Whatever your sport, welcome to the place where all the arguments are finally decided, once and for all.
A Long Cast
Our passions have a way of doing that for us: extending our livesIn 1971, a father and son ventured out of their apartment in New Jersey to the Island of Martha's Vineyard to try their hand at surfcasting. That trip began a life of Spring trips to the waters' edge in search of bluefish and striped bass. Fifty years later, Mike Carotta takes readers along for thirty straight nights and days of fishing. This is not a How To book. It does not contain the secrets to a fantastic fishing career. Rather, hard fishing has a way of revealing lessons from the shore and the people who gather there-binding together strangers in conversations and gestures, failures and successes, new learnings, and, eventually, creating old friends.Through it all, more than fish are caught-and shared. The result is a thoughtful collection of essays on life with some notes from the trade filtered in. Join Mike on his pilgrimage back to where the distance between heaven and earth gets a little thinner and the real "keepers" of the trip go far beyond the fish on the end of the line."I am not a good surf fisherman. There are no helpful fishing hints here. This is a collection of recollection: stories of saltwater characters, occurrences, and conversations. Like stars in the night sky, they are best enjoyed when you get some distance from the lights of other stuff." - Excerpt from A Long Cast"We read books for all kinds of reasons. Learning to fish is not the reason to read A Long Cast. Learning why we go fishing certainly is. ... [This book] is a compendium of those warm memories that keep us going through the offseason and keep us coming back to those places we love. This is not about the fish we catch, but about the people who have been caught by the fish in a magical place." -Rip Cunningham, former Editor-In-Chief and Publisher of Salt Water Sportsman magazine, an inductee into the Fishing Hall of Fame, and a friend of the fish

Sport in Taiwan; History, Culture, Policy
This is the first comprehensive study of sport in Taiwan to be published in English. It appears at a time when Taiwan has the attention of the global community to the greatest extent since the years following the creation of the People's Republic of China and the formation by the Chinese Nationalist Party of an alternative seat of government for the Republic of China in Taiwan's capital, Taipei. The story of sport in Taiwan is one of athletic achievements and political machinations with this island's athletes allowed to compete in international sport only in the name of Chinese Taipei. The book offers insights into the development, political uses, and current situation of sport in Taiwan, the contribution made by the island's indigenous peoples, the significance of physical activity initiatives, relations between Taiwan and the People's Republic of China, sports fandom, the role of the sports media, and gender, exercise, and health. As is so often the case with other parts of the world, sport in Taiwan provides a lens through which the authors examine a range of political and social issues and thereby help readers to gain a better understanding of this interesting, vibrant, and politically sensitive island. "This book is a comprehensive, critical, and timely piece of scholarship that makes a valuable and unique contribution to both the field and our understanding of the distinct and precarious status of Taiwan as a culture and society. Drawing on a range of academic disciplines, theories and methods, the fascinating assembly of essays cover topics spanning indigenous sport, racialised sporting bodies, sport policy, and sport and international relations. The editors, Bairner, Chen, and Chiang, have skilfully blended a collection that uses sport as a strategic lens to provide insights into the complex cultural, economic, political, and diplomatic spheres within which Taiwan carefully negotiates its sovereignty and identity amidst an international community that largely spectates from the geo-political side-lines. This is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand not only the significance of sport in Taiwan but also the significance of Taiwan in the world." --Steve Jackson, Otago University, New Zealand

Beneath the Surface
A wonderfully readable mix of natural history, biology, lake dynamics, and fishing tips, this beautiful illustrated volume reveals the fascinating underwater world of a north country lake. Each summer millions experience the beauty of America's lakes--the whirl of sights and sounds as boats cut through the water and birds call to each other from surrounding trees. Now biologist and ichthyologist Bruce M. Carlson takes nature lovers to the side of the lake that few will experience firsthand--a dynamic world where fish feed and spawn, loons dive deep to snap up perch, and light disappears one wavelength at a time before reaching the ink-blue bottom. With clear-eyed and engaging prose, Beneath the Surface explores the inner workings of Ten Mile Lake in Cass County, Minnesota. And from this intimate study, complemented by elegantly detailed illustrations in pencil, ink, and watercolor, we learn how the physical characteristics of a lake affect the plants and animals within it and how the various forms of life inhabiting a lake interact. Carlson explores how the dynamics of a lake shift from day to night and from season to season. He outlines the effects of a storm on the wildlife below and reveals what the loon's four main types of calls communicate. He explains the impressive intricacies of a beaver's lodge design. And through special chapters that reveal the rhythms and constraints of various species of fish, Carlson shows anglers how to hone techniques to heighten fishing success.
