Making Cartonera Books
This book is a personal account of our experiences with Magnolia Cartonera, our handcrafted, in-home, and independent publishing house. Since 2014, we've been writing, publishing, and crafting cartonero books, which are books with handcrafted carboard covers, as well as zines, which are small self-published magazines made entirely by hand and independently. When we say handcrafted, we mean that our books are made from cardboard boxes we collected ourselves. We repurpose, paint, sew, and bind the cardboard by hand, and the only machine used during the entire process is a home printer. That means we work with paint, thread and needles, cutting tools, scissors, and our home printer. It also means that the production process relies entirely on manual labor, so that every time we create a new copy, a new story begins.Aside from sharing our experiences, our goal is to offer practical information and helpful ideas to solidify your desire to publish cartonero books with covers made by hand. We want to encourage and support people who are thinking of going into independent self-publishing, but who haven't found any literature to help them understand the process of handcrafting a cartonera. We understand that part of our work as independent artists is to share information about our own practices of writing, publication, and graphic arts at Magnolia Cartonera so more people are able to access it. This book is our attempt to help anyone who wants to establish themself as an artist or writer create their own cartonera books and publishing houses.Although lots of people know about cartonero books in our communities, we've noticed that the simple techniques of hand binding carboard boxes to make them into book covers remain largely unknown.Through this text, we hope you learn Magnolia Cartonera's techniques for manufacturing books and that you feel encouraged to write and to publish. We wrote this book for people who want to cultivate and solidify their own autonomy over their creative efforts. We'll show you how we got our start and how we carry out our daily cartonera activities to inspire you to do the same.- Daniele and Juliano

Making the Unseen, Seen
This anthology began as a joint project between me, Dr. Laura Guertin, and Betsy Wilkening. Dr. Guertin and Betsy Wilkening have been creating fascinating exhibits at the Annual Geophysical Union meetings since 2021, which combine their love of fiber art with science. Their goal has been to educate, amuse, and inform the public about topics of scientific interest, and to raise awareness about global warming, climate change, environmental threats, and other changes to our planet, as well as some possible solutions. The first year focused on fiber art quilt creations, and since 2022, entries have expanded to include other forms of fiber art. In 2024, I suggested that we create a multimodal ekphrastic project, pairing fiber art with poetry. Several poems were made in time for the December 2024 American Geophysical Union exhibit to pair with fiber art. Throughout 2024 and early 2025, we accepted more submissions to create this book. Thus, some of the artwork in this book, added after the conference, takes the form of drawings, paintings, and even art in museums. However, each artwork accepted for the book was carefully chosen to fit with the theme to explore "making the unseen, seen" and to link science and art through poetry. The reader is strongly encouraged to read the Artist/Scientist Statements at the back of the book. They are wonderfully illuminating, and even non-scientists can learn from the brief explanations that accompany the thoughtful poems, which cover topics that concern us all, through the use of colorful illustrations. It has been a joy and a deeply satisfying challenge to match these poems with artists to create this book. We hope the reader will peruse the pages multiple times to glean deeper meanings through the layers of its pages. I am grateful to have such distinguished Associate Editors and colleagues as Dr. Guertin and Betsy Wilkening. It is a continuing pleasure to work with Jeanne Johansen and High Tide Publications to create such fine publications as this book! The Cutter's Practical Guide, Part 7
The bravest thing in war is a good retreat, and the cleverest thing in cutting is altering a bad fitting garment in such a way as to make it a good one. Who of us has not felt at a loss what to do when some unexpected difficulty has faced us, and how much at such times we have welcomed the advice of a friend. This work has been got up to prove just such a friend to every cutter in difficulty, and to help him in a practical way to overcome that which stands between him and success. This work is necessarily rather disjointed in its character, as it aims at describing, illustrating, and providing a remedy for most of the defects usually met with; so that if it lacks apparent continuity, we trust the diversity of subjects it treats will meet every necessity. The defects of Trousers are fully dealt with in Part III of the "Cutter's Practical Guide," and these together will, we trust, throw some light on every puzzling defect the cutter usually meets with.
