Confessions of a Third-Rate Goddess
At the end of the 20th century, while mainstream media popularized an expensively dressed version of modern adult life, a rawer, and definitely weirder, reality was playing out off-screen. Columnist and zinester Kathy Biehl chronicled that from a singular and heavily trafficked intersection - collision point, some might say - of young professionals, performing and outsider artists, Unitarians, gays and lesbians, metaphysicians, traveling statues, and people who defied categorizing, many of whom wanted to sleep together, and some of whom actually did. This essay collection, a followup to Eat, Drink & Be Wary: Cautionary Tales, romps through antics, sagas, and questionable behavior that Biehl witnessed, experienced and, at times, instigated. With eyebrow firmly arched, she snapshots sexual tension, ambivalence, and confusion; perils of fan mail and professional caroling; Groucho impersonators, snooping repairmen, and divine manifestations; ludicrous journeys, backstage dramas, and driveway parties; close-ups with a strange, frightening disease; her own, accidental attainment of goddesshood; and other mystery-marvels of life on the bridge to the millennium. All of it really happened. Nobody could make this stuff up.

Laughing at Life's Lunacies
Laughter keeps us sane-which is the first reason to laugh at the lunacies of living. Among the many other reasons are: Competent Computer Help: Technical Support: "And what is your problem?" Me: "My computer will not boot up when I turn it on." Technical Support: "So? Don't turn it on."Witty Husbands: We passed a billboard that advertised a package of Winston cigarettes with the slogan: "Finally, A Butt You Can Kiss." Doug said thoughtfully, "If I were the Cancer Society, I would rent the other side of that billboard and put up a sign that said, "Smoke These, And You Can Kiss Your Butt Goodbye."Roommates Who Won't Take Along Provisions: My roommate refused to take along a box meal because a box meal wasn't "cool." Now . . . we were headed into the Rockies, which are reasonably well known as a vast wilderness where people have perished for lack of food or stayed alive only by eating each other.Motels: We cruised slowly past the other two-the shabby, single-story, strip kind where you park your car directly in front of your room's door, either to keep a suspicious eye on it or for a quick getaway when the cops show up. The first motel was an ancient, grungy building, particularly uninviting, and the second, even grubbier, had assembled four rough-hewn guys in the parking lot with the promising look of those who would wake us up at two a.m. to the sounds of them breaking beer bottles over each other's heads. Also: Deranged neighbors, sadistic physical education teachers, oblivious military officers, children who have seen way too much, bad dates, friendly bikers, backwoods roadside assistance, camping, sailors and seasickness, and dogs with overflowing bladders.

Self Storage Wars
Early on, I realized that this job wouldn't be dull. I assumed that taking care of a bunch of garages full of household items in a huge parking lot couldn't be that hard. I was so wrong. One beautiful spring day, I was sitting in my office with my friend Jim when I got a phone call. I answer, and a man says, whispering into the phone, "Listen. I've watched enough CSI to know what I'm talking about, so listen. A woman is being held against her will in unit 120. I hear her screaming for help and banging on the door to be let out." I managed only one facility at the time, so I quickly narrowed it down to this location. My friend, Jim, was in the office with me. I told him that I was going outside for a minute and would be right back. I walked out and continued talking on the phone; I proceeded down the aisle toward unit 120. I started asking the guy on the telephone if he lives nearby and if that's why he can hear her. In the meantime, I looked around to ensure no one was purposely luring me outside. I notice one of the nearby neighbors peeking around a curtain at a sliding patio door while talking on his phone.
Letters On England
"Letters on England" is a collection of essays written by the French philosopher and writer Voltaire (Fran癟ois-Marie Arouet). The book consists of a series of letters that Voltaire wrote during his exile in England from 1726 to 1729. It offers his observations and reflections on various aspects of English society, culture, politics, and religious tolerance. In the "Letters on England," Voltaire praises the English system of government and law, particularly their respect for individual liberties and freedom of thought. He admires the English monarchy and the balance of power between the king, the parliament, and the judiciary. One of the central themes of the book is religious tolerance in England. Voltaire contrasts the more tolerant English society with the religious persecution he witnessed in France. He praises the English for allowing different religious denominations to coexist peacefully and for promoting religious freedom and freedom of conscience. Voltaire's work also explores the intellectual and cultural life in England. He discusses the scientific advancements, such as Isaac Newton's theories, and the progress in education and learning. Voltaire is impressed by the English universities and the level of intellectual discourse and debate in the country. "Letters on England" provides an outsider's perspective on English society and serves as a reflection on the Enlightenment ideals of reason, tolerance, and individual freedom.

The Forever Pact
What's that saying? What can go wrong will go wrong?I think that should be the saying for my life.I'm Pippa Chase. I was about to become Pippa Snothead, but then my fiance cheated on me and I called off the wedding...I'm heartbroken, but at least I avoided a horrible last name. Now I'm on my way to Paradise Valley, Montana to lick my wounds and figure out what's next in my life. I'm going to live with my childhood best friend TJ Wyatt, on a ranch he bought. Ever since we were young we had a pact, if ever one of us needed the other, we would be there for each other.Granted, TJ and I haven't seen each other since we were 13 and we stopped our barrage of letters and emails when were were 18. However, we still send Christmas cards yearly and in one of them he did say, "If you're ever in this part of the country, drop in." I just don't think he meant it as literally as I took it.So that's how I ended up living on a remote ranch, in a log cabin with a man who didn't seem quite as happy to see me as I thought he would. But maybe it didn't help that I showed up in my wedding dress and everyone in town thought I was his newly-wed bride. Oops! This may not have been my best decision, but I'm hoping that Paradise Valley can help to mend my broken heart.
Everyday Tales of Older Women in Their Prime
Age is irrelevant to older women who are in their prime. They may not enjoy looking in the mirror as much as they once did, but they really haven't changed very much at all. They still yearn to dress up and party, keep up in the modern world, and they may even still hope to meet the partner of their dreams. But like everyone else they have their ups and their downs, diets and exercise to struggle with, probably a few extra aches and pains and, of course, the knowledge that they are in the autumn of their lives. So as the years tick by, there's no time to lose to buy more shoes, read through old love letters, or rent a camper van for the weekend. With full-time work almost certainly all but forgotten, there are also family and friends to keep up with, and lots of reminiscing to do. In her collection of humorous poems, Nicola Madge takes a wry look at the thrills, anxieties and everyday activities that are all part of growing older. Geo Parkin adds to the comedy with his original and evocative illustrative cartoons.

Flush Test
This is the fourth anthology in a sequence which began with Honest Not Invent, and continued with Vent Stack and Ishmael's Blues. Stanislav, the young polish plumber, was created (or channeled) online by ishmael smith in 2007, and this final collection showcases stanislav at his most scathing, in a coruscating symphony of scorn. Focusing almost entirely on British and American politics, Flush Test is heaving with transgressive satire at its uncompromising and hilarious best.
High on the Vine
Humor abounding, the stories of High on the Vine feature thrice-removed cousins, Tami & Evi Maki, who often contemplate how their lives would be vastly different, if only they did not bear the burden of marriage to Toivo and Eino. Always shirking respon-sibility, the two spousal reprobates tend to work as little as humanly possible and gamble beyond their means. When Toivo and Eino do win a "pot" they pass along a share of the booty to their wives with an all-expense paid trip to someplace "exotic." While this may bring a tropical paradise to mind, it turns out to be a survival wilderness weekend in the dead of winter in the middle of nowhere.Tami & Evi punish their husbands with a hostile takeover of the boys' hunting camp. From there they explore many entrepreneurial adven-tures, including a "rustic" vacation rental, an Amish-run chicken ranch, and a winery operated by a group of misogynistic monks who turn out a product known as "Monk Juice." While the bottom line for Tami and Evi is always murky, the various ventures they pursue are even murkier."Terri Martin gets to show off her propensity for puns the best when Evi gets drunk at their weekly 'teatime' which starts with boxed wine and ends with her passing out, most often. If you like a good chuckle about Yooper foibles and follies, I highly recommend High on the Vine by Terri Martin. -- Victor Volkman, Marquette Monthly"Readers should rejoice that all the stories now appear in one book and follow the cousins (thrice removed) from considering raising fish in a swimming pool to vacationing on a beach with a Pi簽a Colada in hand and the Atlantic Ocean spread before them. The book is filled with grins, giggles, and out-loud laughter." -- Tom Powers, Michigan in Books"Laced with laughter, High On The Vine is a fun read from start to finish and will prove an immediate and enduringly popular pick for community library Contemporary Humor collections." -- Jim Cox, Midwest Book ReviewLearn more at www.TerriLynnMartin.comfrom Modern History Press www.ModernHistoryPress.com
The Wayward Professor
This wry portrayal of academic life will delight anyone who has ever spent time on a college campus. Writing with lightly satirical, self-deprecating charm, Joel Gold covers topics ranging from academic conventions to motivating recalcitrant students, from grantsmanship to the I.R.S., from the follies and foibles of academics to sabbaticals and living overseas. Twenty-six tales are illustrated with caricatures that capture perfectly the diffident, bemused, often befuddled wayward professor.

Chap-a-Chidush
Although many believe that the Chidush Rabbi is the author of this book's actual name, the Chidush Rabbi is neither said author's name nor is he an actual Rabbi. The Chidush Rabbi is actually a yeshiva bachur. Born to Ba'al Teshuva Israeli parents, the Chidush Rabbi was brought into the Yeshiva world wondering what many things done in the Yeshiva world have to do with Yidishkeit. Because he wasn't born into it, the Chidush Rabbi is much more apt to notice seemingly strange things that are done. Having been given no answers, the Chidush Rabbi delves deep into figuring out the svara behind these interesting trends and behaviors. In the Chidush Rabbi's first work, Chap-a-Chidush explores some of his most fascinating wonderments and discoveries on the Yeshiva world. Besides being enlightening and entertaining, Chap-a-Chidush has mussar woven into each and every Chidush. Coming from an unbiased Yeshiva bochur, not only will the mussar be easy to implement, but each and every chidush will give one a new and fresh perspective on life. Limerature 101
The Western literary tradition begins with ancient Greek and Roman epics, winds its way through Milton, Shakespeare, and Dickens, and to where we find it today, a rich and beautiful catalog of the human experience. But to read all of that is just so much, well, reading, and who has the time or the energy? Lance Hansen does, and he's successfully combined an encyclopedic knowledge of literature with pithy criticism, the skills of a poet, and the artistic eye of a cartoonist to create Limerature 101: Literary Classics in Five Lines or Less (With Pictures). Presenting more than 60 of the great works of literature, summarized and satirized as jaunty, hilarious limericks, and with accompanying illustrations of their legendary creators.Presented as the text of a full-year university-level literature course, Limerature 101 takes readers on an informative but savagely humorous journey through the history of literature. The well-read and literarily curious will devour Hansen's takes on "Ancient and Influential Voices" (The Epic of Gilgamesh, Pride and Prejudice), "Titans of Global Literature" (The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Unbearable Lightness of Being), "American Revolutionaries" (The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Catch-22), and "Modernists and Populists" (The Crying of Lot 49, Gone Girl). And each limerick is accompanied with an original, hand-drawn portrait by the author.ADVANCED PRAISE"A clever and funny read. Lance Hansen is a treasure!" --Noah Van Scriver"This book is smart, clever and funny - all the things I am not.
