Edward Duffield
The first comprehensive study of the life and times of colonial Philadelphia clockmaker Edward Duffield Edward Duffield (1730-1803) was a colonial Philadelphia clockmaker, whose elegant brass, mahogany, and walnut timekeepers stand proudly in major American museums and collections. Duffield, unlike other leather-apron 'mechanics, ' was born rich and owned a country estate, Benfield, and many more properties. He was deeply involved in civic and church affairs during crucial years in American history--his lifelong close friend, Benjamin Franklin, was staying at Duffield's Benfield estate when Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams first discussed the Declaration of Independence. Sally, Franklin's daughter, brought her family there for extended periods during the Revolution and Franklin's wife, Deborah, was best friends for fifty years with Duffield's mother-in-law. Duffield was even one of three executors of Franklin's will. In this lavishly illustrated book, Bob Frishman catalogs and describes seventy-one known Duffield clocks and instruments and reveals how, during the mid-eighteenth century, they largely were not fabricated from scratch by isolated individuals. He contends that Duffield and his fellow clockmakers were not furniture-makers; they were mechanical artisans whose complex metal machines rang the hours and steadily ticked inside wooden cases made by others. Existing books on Philadelphia clocks have focused on these artifacts as furniture, including their woodwork, cabinetmakers, and decorative aspects. However, Frishman, a professional horologist for nearly four decades, brings his vast expertise to bear on this first comprehensive study of Duffield's life and work. Far more than a treatise on pre-industrial horological timekeeping, this book tells the compelling stories of a man, a city, and an era, while deepening our appreciation for Duffield's stately sentinels--often a colonial American family's most valuable possession--and the times and places in which their makers lived.

Louisa May Alcott's Little Women follows the lives, loves and tribulations of four sisters (Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy) growing up during the American Civil War. The story is based on the childhood experiences Alcott shared with her real-life sisters, Anna, May and Elizabeth. The March family live in a small house next door to the Laurence mansion, where young Theodore Laurence, known as Laurie, and his aged grandfather have only each other for company. Old Mr. Laurence is wealthy, and he indulges every wish of his grandson, but often Laurie is lonely. When the lamps are lit and the shades are up in the March house, he can see the four March sisters, with their mother in the center, seated around a cheerful fire. He learns to know them by name before he meets them, and, in his imagination, he almost feels himself a member of the family. Alcott intricately explores the rich nuances of family and family relationships with each character. Avid Alcott readers often identify in themselves one of the four sisters at various phases in their own lives. It's a perfect story for Christmas, or any time of year; a fine example of Romanticism. ** The Chiltern edition of Little Women contains the original first part story. A beautiful edition of the second part of the story called Good Wives is also available **

Nostalgia
Now, in the twilight of my writing career, but still ambitious, I decided that writing a third book following "Blind Journey: A Journalist's Memoirs" and its sequel, "Insomnia: Two Wives, Childhood Memories and Crazy Dreams" would simply be too much work. Wow! That word, work, suddenly reminded me of the time I was among a theater-full of struggling members of the Writers Guild attending a movie preview. The scene was an exchange between two old friends who hadn't seen each other for some time. "It's so good to see you, Jane," one said. "Where are you working these days, or are you still writing?"The dark theater exploded in bursts of laughter. So what's this got to do with "Nostalgia: Stars of Yesteryear?"After ten years of covering sports at the Times, I transferred to the Calendar section as a copy editor and freelanced writing features about former superstars in the twilight of their careers. Robert Hilburn, the Times' former rock music critic and author of his riveting book about the life of "Johnny Cash, '' soon realized the "old-timers'' deserved space in the section along with rock stars. Hilburn dubbed me the "Nostalgia Editor."My filing cabinet is filled with features about superstars of yesteryear published long before this era of tattoos, weird hairdos and the universal acceptance of the adjectives cool and awesome. Among the first folders I opened was an in-depth article about Dick Contino, a somewhat forgotten accordionist whose thriving career went into hibernation when he deserted the army after being drafted. Necessarily trimmed, but virtually unedited, Contino's story plus those of Cassius Clay/Muhimmad Ali, Sammy Davis Jr., Rosemary Clooney, the Andrews Sisters and scores of others make up untouched chapters in "Nostalgia."They span decades. Beautiful Clay
For most of human history, all pottery was what we would now consider traditional folk pottery. Not all artifacts go beyond the basic requirements of utility in pursuit of beauty, but Beautiful Clay considers those that do.In Beautiful Clay, noted scholar of traditional ceramics John A. Burrison writes about how a potter applies aesthetics to utilitarian objects to transform raw clay into something beautiful. Though what is considered beautiful in art changes from culture to culture and person to person, there are universal techniques such as manipulating form, color, texture, and more that tap into clay's potential for beauty. Burrison uses an approach from a perspective of international artistry rather than an approach bound by history or geography. After beginning with more than 40,000 images that the author curated as a study resource, Beautiful Clay narrows it down to around 230 images that capture the artistry within traditional ceramics worldwide.Beautiful Clay examines the aesthetic dimensions of what is essentially a traditional utilitarian craft, the ancient clay-based craft of pottery, from earliest times to the present.

Major Wolcott's List
The Johnson County War took place in Wyoming in April 1892. At that time, a group of powerful Wyoming cattlemen created a hit list of seventy men-small ranchers, cowboys, and others they considered a hindrance to large-scale ranching interests. They planned an invasion of the county, intending to search out and kill the men on the list. But when they arrived, the locals fought back. Major Wolcott's List does not explore the conflict itself; instead, it provides in-depth information on the firearms that participants used-the first book to provide such detail for the guns used an actual Old West gunfight. Author William N. Hockett lists the firearms surrendered at the end of the Johnson County Cattle War by name and by make and model, including calibers, serial numbers, and other important details. Hockett also offers an analysis of the firearms used, including as much information as possible about the weapons and their cartridges. Intended for historians, collections, and aficionados of Wyoming history, this study presents a thorough guide to firearms of the late nineteenth-century American West.

Borneo Ikat Textiles
Among the numerous ethnic groups on the island of Borneo, one group in particular-the Iban of the Malaysian state of Sarawak-stands out for their spectacular heritage of handwoven textiles. Over the past forty years, their richly decorated ikat textiles have been the subject of intense collecting activity and numerous publications. The textiles of the Iban-related groups of West Kalimantan in Indonesian Borneo, however, have not received the same kind of attention, as most textiles that have come into museum and private collections lack provenance and very little is known about the weavers that produced them.Based on the author's fieldwork in Sarawak and West Kalimantan, this book provides an authoritative view of the style variations made by the Bugau, Banjur, Mualang, Kantu', Desa, Demam, Senangan, Sebaru', and Ketungau Sesat peoples, as well as by the Balau Iban. Dr Traude Gavin's research is timely since many of these field examples have likely been sold or lost to decay since the research was carried out. Well-meaning attempts to revive weaving traditions regrettably have resulted in the 'scrambling' of styles that formerly were a mark of these ethnic groups. The core of the book comprises field notes and over 200 illustrations of textiles, linking field specimens to selected examples in museum and private collections. Complex issues of ethnic labels, ancestry, and identity are discussed and placed in historical perspective from pre-colonial times to the present. This book may be used as a tool for curators, collectors, and those interested in the weaving traditions of Borneo, with which to identify the ethnic background of the weavers who created the specimens in their collections. The book corrects misleading terminology that has appeared in recent publications illustrating West Kalimantan textiles and gives a more in-depth and rounded perspective of the textiles made by these little-known groups. This is a scholarly, timely, and vital book that will expand our view of this once vibrant and diverse weaving tradition. This book is produced by the Tracing Patterns Foundation in collaboration with Traude Gavin. The proceeds from its sale will support the non-profit's mission of advancing traditional textile arts scholarships.
Understanding Headspace
A basic understanding of headspace and how it affects the proper operation of a firearm are necessary if you wish to call yourself a gunsmith. Otherwise all you will be able to do is change parts with the hope that somehow the problem will go away. The later is normally called an armorer, not a gunsmith. Many self proclaimed experts try to create fear and confusion around the subject of headspace. This subject, like most measuring processes, is simple and easy to understand if you are willing to educate yourself. In a broad sense, headspace is a complex relationship between the cartridge, chamber, and firearm mechanism. The starting point for headspace is the cartridge case. The complex functions of the cartridge case include holding the cartridge components together, aligning the bullet in the bore, expanding to seal the breach from gasses, contracting in time for easy extraction, and removing heat from the chamber. Then of course we have to discuss the chamber and all its attributes. This booklet contains all the information a gunsmith needs in order to understand headspace and diagnose issuse that may arrise with ammunition and chambers.

HUMANITY April 2023
The history of the magazine begins in 2020 (although the idea originated in 2019), then it was born in the form of an electronic newspaper DEMO GOG, with the prospect of further printing on paper. Initially, this newspaper was planned as a student media, but during the evolutionary process, after 20 issues, it changed its subject and audience, and in the fall of 2020, the newspaper acquired the appearance of a magazine with a branded cover, which has reached today almost unchanged. The key moment was the merger with the Life Line magazine, which had previously been published by the charity foundation Every Child's Life Line (ECLF). Since then, the main topics of the magazine have become not only creativity and literature, but also charity. The main changes were the change of the subject to literary and creative and the removal of age (everyone, not just students) and territorial (not only Russia, but all countries of the world) restrictions for the participants of the magazine. Today, Humanity magazine is a unique English-language media that is distributed worldwide and is available in any country when purchased from the online store of the Ukiyoto publishing house. Each issue of the magazine takes place with the participation of the Russian, Vietnamese and Serbian Writers' Unions. Also, each issue of the magazine is accompanied by articles from the Life Line Foundation (ECLF) and the Poetry Clinic rubric. The standard volume is 90 pages. The magazine presents all continents in the form of separate headings and thus each issue of the magazine covers the whole world! The magazine constantly continues to develop, works on connecting and publishing new authors, establishes communication and friendly relations between poets from all over the world and strives to increase circulation.

Collecting China
Brian McElney was born in Hong Kong in the early 1930s, and for more than two decades was one of the territory's top lawyers. But in his spare time, he also put together one of the most comprehensive collections of East Asian antiques in the world, many of them spotted by him amongst the knick-knacks on Hollywood Road and Cat Street. His memoir, Collecting China, starts at the height of the Cultural Revolution in the mid-1960s, when it was just not known whether the Red Guards would storm over the border and start smashing up porcelain on the Mid-Levels. He also tells tales ranging from the Hong Kong of the 1930s through to the establishment by Brian of what is today the only museum specialising in Chinese antiquities in the United Kingdom - the Museum of East Asian Art in Bath.

The Sanctuary of Hermes and Aphrodite at Syme Viannou VII, Vol. 2
New insights from the archaeology and pottery of the sanctuary of Hermes and Aphrodite at Syme Viannou, Crete The Sanctuary of Hermes and Aphrodite at Syme Viannou VII: The Greek and Roman Pottery presents in two volumes the Greek and Roman pottery recovered from the excavation of the sanctuary of Syme Viannou, one of the most long-lived and important cult sites of ancient Crete and the Aegean. The site, which is known as the Cretan Delphi, was dedicated to Hermes and Aphrodite for much of its history. The present study analyzes and catalogs 865 pieces, dating from across the early first millennium BCE to the mid-first millennium CE. Kotsonas integrates traditional typological and chronological inquiries with contextual considerations, macroscopic and petrographic analyses of ceramic fabrics, and quantitative studies. The resulting work provides detailed documentation of the pottery from Syme Viannou and explores its ritual and other roles within the diachronic panorama of cultic and other activities at the site. It also supports a broader understanding of the role of ceramics in sanctuary contexts by introducing systematically comparative perspectives on the evidence of pottery from other Cretan and Greek sanctuaries. Volume 2 presents synthetic studies of the material, exploring the use of different ceramic fabrics, the relationship between the form and function of the vessels, and the place of ceramic items in the cultic practice and daily life at the sanctuary in Greek and Roman antiquity.
Of Indian Carpets and Carpetwallahs
Carpets adorn living spaces across the length and breadth of the country and are appreciated for many qualities-their design, their colours, their 'feel'-but rarely their history. Yet, each carpet has a story hidden within its intricate details, and the value of a carpet is not only determined by what it costs, or by its technical and aesthetic qualities, but also by the story it carries. Of Indian Carpets and Carpetwallahs: An Appreciation tells the stories of Indian carpets by delving into the histories of an assortment of unique carpets-that of delicate Kashmiri carpets, a Herati-inspired carpet made in Amritsar, and even one made in Rampur jail-collected by Norwegian diplomat Jon Westborg over his lifetime. Of Indian Carpets and Carpetwallahs: An Appreciation melds history, memory, and aesthetics beautifully to create a complete and detailed picture of the Indian carpet-making tradition.
