Matchbox Toys
Lesney Products was formed in 1947 to make zinc castings, mainly for the building industry; toys were a sideline when business happened to be slow. To cash in on the upcoming 1953 Coronation of Princess Elizabeth they decided to model a miniature of the Coronation Coach. When this sold a million pieces it spurred on and financed a new venture that would become a household name: Matchbox Miniatures. In 1954 came the #5 London Bus and the #7 Horse Drawn Milk Float and the range took off, with road vehicles of all sorts, all modelled at a size that would fit in a child's hand. And these were joined by Accessory Packs and Major Packs, slightly larger toys but made to Matchbox size, plus fold-out Card Roadways, Service Stations, Pocket Catalogues and Carry Cases. Then in 1969 came great change. Mattel had released their range called 'Hot Wheels' with high-speed wheels and axles, and in order to compete Matchbox retooled everything to have their own Superfast wheels and axles, along with brighter or newer colour schemes. 'Superfasts' regained their lost sales and were a common sight in every playground and young person's bedroom in the 1970s and 80s. Beloved of two generations of children, and now highly collectable, the Matchbox 1-75 range is a British institution that has now found its perfect introduction in this book.

I have adored the exquisite collection of shells that my mother inherited from her grandfather's estate, when she was thirteen years old. As the new custodian of this unique treasure, I undertook the task of moving the collection from Tasmania to my new home on the Sunshine Coast. The resulting near-disaster turned out to be a blessing, as I discovered the pages of letters and newspapers hidden beneath the collection contained fascinating stories, and a history that was also my own. The documents captivated me and transported me back in time to the colonial era. The collection was started by the Reverend Joshua Tinson, an English Baptist missionary, who lived in Jamaica between 1822 and 1850. Following his death, his wife and daughter, Eliza, followed the path of my ancestors, and sailed across vast oceans to settle in Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land. Eliza Tinson gave her fathers collection to my great grandfather, Ernest Henry Pretyman, who was also an avid shell collector. Roberts Bros. of Gloucester is a company which was between the two World Wars reckoned to be the largest of its type in the country, manufacturing family games and toys. In Gloucester it was one of a handful of major employers, with S.J. Moreland and Sons and the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Co. Roberts Bros. exported around the world but was poor at self-promotion through universally badging its products. "Glevum Games" and a Roman soldier's head was its main trademark, but neither was used consistently, and no record of the registration of either has yet been identified.As a result, and because the company sold through wholesalers and large retailers such as the Army and Navy Stores, Harrod's and Gamages, the name did not achieve the widespread familiarity of competitors such as Spear's or Jaques, or even the company with which Roberts Bros. eventually merged, Chad Valley. It is fair to say that for much of the first half of the 20th century almost every home in Britain probably had something made in the Glevum Works factory at Gloucester, but that most owners will have had no idea that it was a Roberts Bros. item. That factory, opened in 1902, was state-of-the-art and used as a model by Government inspectors and advisers.The company survived World War I and the Depression, and even came through World War II, but the costs involved in reopening the Glevum Works (taken over for war work) and the loss of old buyers proved to be insurmountable. In 1954 the company formed a voluntary merger with Chad Valley of Birmingham, and in 1957 the Glevum Works was finally closed, ending an era which employed up to 750 local people in its heyday.The first book on the company was published in 2013.Games-Makers to the Empire: Roberts Brothers of Gloucester 1890 - 1957 included hundreds of plates and revealed what at the time the author had pieced together about the firm. In the years since more evidence has come to light and further examples have been recorded.
