Lew Wallace (1827- 1905), portrayed in this stunning portrait label, is virtually a forgotten name today. World-famous during his day, he was not only a Major General during the Civil War but became more famous when he wrote what some consider to be the best-selling novel of the 19th century. His Ben Hur (see page 34), a novel that was turned into a Hollywood blockbuster winning a record eleven Oscars in 1959, was certainly the most read and the best-known book title during the 20th century, that is, until it was superseded by Gone with the Wind in the 1930s. By examining the cartouche to the left of this stunning label portrait, one detects Wallace's role as a General during the Civil War, especially at the Battle of Shiloh. The cartouche to the right of his portrait details his writing studio in Crawfordsville, Indiana. This is where his most famous novel was written. This book is a comprehensive, illustrated reference for the chromolithographic advertising cards issued by the Arbuckle Brothers Coffee Company in the late 19th Century. Such cards were printed and distributed by a multitude of businesses during this period, and are commonly referred to as "Victorian Trade Cards".To promote their "ARIOSA" brand of coffee, Arbuckles' distributed hundreds of different cards, most of them inserted into their 1-lb. coffee packages, and many of them in distinct and numbered series.Some cards simply consisted of pretty pictures on the front, with Ariosa coffee advertising on the back. Many others purported to be educational in nature, weaving topics such as history, geography, zoology, and even cooking into both the illustrations and the accompanying narratives.This reference includes full-color images of each and every card that was issued as part of a series, as well as most of the known cards that were issued independently. Printing varieties that have been identified for some cards are detailed and, in most cases, also illustrated. La Crosse Fish Decoys
La Crosse Fish Decoys is the first and only book covering this subject matter. It should interest fish decoy collectors, hobbyists, fishermen, and anyone interested in a hobby that has a solid financial return. The heyday for spearfishing in La Crosse, Wisconsin, was 1890 until 1938, when spearfishing was banned in that region. Thus given the age of the decoys used, little is known concerning their makers. Indeed, all of the known La Crosse fish decoy makers are deceased. This book is divided into seven chapters. Chapter 1 provides a brief history of the La Crosse region from its earliest days until the present time with emphasis, when appropriate, to the sport of spearfishing. Chapter 2 discusses the development of the technique of spearfishing from its Asian origins and contrasts the American Indian approach to spearing to the white men's modification of it. In Chapter 3, The Mississippi River is discussed and its effects on spearing in the La Crosse Reach. The heart of the book is Chapter 4, when seventy-one known La Crosse decoy makers? biographies are presented along the discussion of their decoys, not to mention, photographic examples of their work. Chapter 5 gives a photographic review of fish decoys which imitate actual fish species. Chapter 6 provides photographic example of La Crosse spears used by fishermen, and documents both known and unknown speak makers. Finally, Chapter 7 reviews La Crosse ?cheater? decoys, jig sticks, lures, and decoy-holding boxes to round out the book.
