The Big Book of Egyptian Mithology
Egyptian civilization lasted for about three thousand years, producing icons that, even today, populate and intrigue people's imagination. Pyramids, animal-headed gods, sphinxes, mummies, hieroglyphs, deeds and concepts that marked the capacity of a people who lived their heyday many millennia ago, in a time so primitive that such accomplishments assume almost fantastic dimensions. This book on Egyptian Mythology not only brings the main gods and their attributes, but also contextualizes the history, religion and cosmogonies of this incredible people, taking you on a journey through time through this remarkable civilization.
Ending Eden
The "Gods" who brought us to Earth are coming back. But are They coming here to save us from ourselves--or to destroy us?The Anunnaki Council--made up of 12 Earth-born "Pures" from all over the globe--have convened to decide the fate of Earth humans. They have been tasked by the Celestial Pures (extraterrestrials), monitoring us from above, to choose one of four possible scenarios to be imposed on the people of Earth upon Their return: Should Earthkind be destroyed, enslaved, abandoned, or ushered into a glorious future?Tempers flare and heartfelt opinions are shared as the Council delves into how Modern Man originally arrived on planet Earth, what we have and have not achieved, the Celestials' ongoing manipulation of us, and whether or not earth humans are, in fact, worth saving.Ending Eden answers questions you never knew you had; exposes centuries of institutionalized misinformation; makes sense out of common nonsense; explains the heretofore inexplicable; and casts a glaring light upon the truth of who we really are.Packed with over 100 colorful photographs and undeniable facts, this book will make you believe in our Celestial ancestors...no matter how skeptical you've been in the past.
Tehillim - Book of Psalms With Shimush Tehillim
Shimush TehillimSefer Shimush Tehillim is a short and relatively little-known treatise attributed to Rav Hai Gaon [according to the Sedei Chemed] which describes the Kabbalistic uses of particular chapters and verses from the Book of Psalms for prophylactic or healing purposes. These selections are meant to be either recited alone, frequently multiple times or in conjunction with some other action or prayer. Shimush Tehillim is mentioned in Teshuvas HaRashba, by the Chida, and others. This work is not to be confused with bibliomancy which is the use of Biblical verses for predicting the future. There are numerous instances cited in the Talmud and other sources regarding the utilization of Biblical verses to ward off demons and the Evil Eye, against bad dreams, against the effects of drinking water uncovered at night, and other more serious calamities. Verses were employed to lighten the pain at childbirth, as protection against danger on a journey, fierce dogs, bleeding and wounds, and the effects of fire and fever. Verses were recited to gain favor or improve one's memory, and so on.Yet, it must be noted, that there was great opposition to the use of the Torah for magical, curative purposes. The Rambam, the Tur [Yoreh Deoh 179], and the Shulchon Oruch [Yoreh Deoh 179:10] forbade such usage. The Rambam in Hilchos Avodas Cochavim 11:12 pointedly writes: "Regarding one who incants over a wound or reads a verse from the Torah, and so one who reads verses to calm a frightened child or places a Sefer Torah or Tefilin on a child so that he will sleep - it is not bad enough that these people are numbered among the sorcerers and diviners, but they are also counted as heretics to the Torah by using words of the Torah to heal the body. The (words of the) Torah are for healing the soul only, as it is written, 'and they shall be life for your soul'. However, it is permitted to recite verses and chapters from Tehillim for protection against troubles and harm - by merit of their recitation."Protection - yes, curing - no.Since Tehillim, more than any other Sefer from Tanach was used to defend against the effects of all types of predicaments and save one from danger, as recorded in Shimush Tehillim, I thought that it might be helpful to the reader so I have prepared the following insert above each chapter that states which Tehillim should be used for which ailment and condition. The insert in Hebrew is the full version with the name of Hashem. The English is the abridged version of the explanation.Nevertheless, since this monograph is meant for general educational purposes only and not practical application, and in deference to the dissenting opinions, I have only provided a selection of chapter usage from the book, and did not list the use of single verses nor what other actions are required in addition to the recitation of the chapter to affect the desired results. For such purposes, the interested reader must consult an actual edition of Shimush Tehillim and ask his rabbi how to employ it, if at all. All this aside, it is commendable to recite Tehillim anyway for the efficacy of it as prayer is well-known. Finally, I made no attempt at trying to determine why each chapter has the effect claimed, as there is no indication of this in Shimush Tehillim itself.

The Art of the Literary Poster
An exploration of late nineteenth-century American literary posters--a vibrant genre at the vanguard of modern commercial art and graphic design "Will thrill commercial art nerds and avid readers alike."--Nathalie Atkinson, Globe & Mail (Toronto), Gift Book Selection Spurred by innovations in printing technology, the modern poster emerged in the 1890s as a popular form of visual culture in the United States. Created by some of the best-known illustrators and graphic designers of the period--including Will H. Bradley, Florence Lundborg, Edward Penfield, and Ethel Reed--these advertisements for books and high-tone periodicals such as Harper's and Lippincott's went beyond the realm of commercial art, incorporating bold, stylized imagery and striking typography. This book, based on the renowned Leonard A. Lauder Collection, explores the craze for literary posters, which became sought after collectibles even in their day. It offers new scholarly perspectives that address the aesthetic sophistication and modernity of the literary poster; the impact of early experiments in the field of advertising psychology; the expanded opportunities for women artists, who played an important role in advancing the socalled poster style; and the printmaking techniques that artists employed in this novel art form. A lively survey of a little-known but highly influential period in graphic design, The Art of the Literary Poster is sure to delight enthusiasts of illustration, advertising, and book arts. Modern Painting
While acknowledging the legacy of Herbert Read's classic 1959 study A Concise History of Modern Painting in the World of Art series, academic and artist Simon Morley places the foundation of modern art much earlier than Read, at the emergence of Romanticism and the dawn of the industrial age. Structured loosely chronologically by period, the focus is as much on individual artists as movements, with works discussed within a broader context--stylistic, historical, geographic, and gender and ethnic frames--themes which recur throughout the chapters. Generously illustrated, the global and diverse range of artists featured include William Blake, ?douard Manet, Hilma af Klint, Kazimir Malevich, Willem de Kooning, Amrita Sher-Gil, Faith Ringgold, and Kehinde Wiley. This guide also includes an appendix in the form of questions the reader might like to ask about the artists and ideas discussed--in order to reconsider the works from a contemporary perspective.

100 Novels That Changed the World
A look at 100 inspiring novels that have left a significant mark on the world of literature and popular culture. Before the novel, the world of books was dominated by scientific tomes, religious tracts and histories of the victorious in war. There had been stories and epic poems from ancient times - Homer's Iliad and Odyssey recounted ancient Greece, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight was a chivalric romance in Middle English, but it was not until the seventeenth century, when the European middle classes had money and leisure, that anything so frivolous as a novel could be sold for entertainment. Colin Salter traces the evolution of the novel from the earliest examples through to the postmodernist best-sellers of the 21st century. Rather than dwelling too long on the technical nuances of innovative writing style he has amassed 100 of the greatest novel writers and chosen their most significant work. For writers such as Herman Melville, James Joyce or Harper Lee the decision is not a difficult one. For Charles Dickens, Salman Rushdie and Margaret Atwood, the choice is perhaps more difficult.Following the style set with previous books in the 100 series, most notably 100 Children's Books and 100 Science Discoveries, each author is given a concise biography and their major novel analysed and then set in context with their other published work.Readers can become ridiculously well-read in 224 pages. Authors included: Alexandre Dumas, Daniel Defoe, Victor Hugo, Mary Shelly, Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, Charlotte Bront禱, Emily Bront禱, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Hilary Mantel, Jane Austen, Robert Louis Stevenson, Walter Scott, Lewis Carroll, JRR Tolkien, Gustave Flaubert, Marcel Proust, Henry James, Harper Lee, James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, Margaret Atwood, Alice Walker, Jules Verne, HG Wells, Virginia Woolf, Leo Tolstoy, Louisa M. Alcott, Arthur Conan Doyle, Bram Stoker, John Steinbeck, CS Lewis, Chinua Achebe, Jack Kerouac, John Le Carre, Arundhati Roy, Mila Kundera, Joseph Heller, JD Salinger, Alexandr Solzhenitsyn, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Miguel Cervantes, Graham Greene, F. Scott Fitzgerald, George Orwell, John Steinbeck, Evelyn Waugh, Robert Graves, Daphne du Maurier, Agatha Christie, PG Wodehouse, Raymond Chandler, Hunter S. Thompson, Khaled Hosseini.

The Sanctuary of Hermes and Aphrodite at Syme Viannou VII, Vol. 1
New insights from the archaeology and pottery of the sanctuary of Hermes and Aphrodite at Syme Viannou, Crete The Sanctuary of Hermes and Aphrodite at Syme Viannou VII: The Greek and Roman Pottery presents in two volumes the Greek and Roman pottery recovered from the excavation of the sanctuary of Syme Viannou, one of the most long-lived and important cult sites of ancient Crete and the Aegean. The site, which is known as the Cretan Delphi, was dedicated to Hermes and Aphrodite for much of its history. The present study analyzes and catalogs 865 pieces, dating from across the early first millennium BCE to the mid-first millennium CE. Kotsonas integrates traditional typological and chronological inquiries with contextual considerations, macroscopic and petrographic analyses of ceramic fabrics, and quantitative studies. The resulting work provides detailed documentation of the pottery from Syme Viannou and explores its ritual and other roles within the diachronic panorama of cultic and other activities at the site. It also supports a broader understanding of the role of ceramics in sanctuary contexts by introducing systematically comparative perspectives on the evidence of pottery from other Cretan and Greek sanctuaries. Volume 1 provides an introduction to the site of the sanctuary of Syme Viannou and its history, and contains an analytical catalog of the ceramic remains.

Burton, and Merle Avila who are members of the Northwestern Bottle Collectors Association in Sonoma County, California. We have compiled information regarding soda bottlers, beer bottlers and brewers, saloons and their advertising trade tokens. As with all reference books this is a work in progress as new information always seems to appear after it is "finished" and published.John C. Burton has been a collector of Sonoma County bottles, beer cans and memorabilia and a member of the Northwestern Bottle Collector's Association (NBCA) since 1978. As a past-president and current secretary of the club he has published much information of the enclosed content in this publication. A member of the 49er Chapter of the Beer Can Collectors of America (BCCA) and is an authority of Grace Brothers Brewery, Santa Rosa.Merle Avila has brought a wealth of information to our club and publication through his extensive token collection. As president of the NBCA, his valuable skills and leadership has been a driving force that has made our meetings more interesting and valuable to our membership. He is also president of the Sonoma County Coin club, president of the Western States Token Association and past president and current vice-president of National Token Association. John Louder has proved invaluable in research and providing information for this publication. He has spent numerous hours at the Sonoma County Library History Annex and Sonoma County Recorder's Office gathering information that has assisted in making this publication more interesting and correct.John started collection at the young age of 4 or 5 years while playing in the dirt at the old house on Stewart Street here in Santa Rosa. He would occasionally find a marble or an army soldier from which he enjoyed finding something old in the dirt. His mother told him "that must have belonged to a little boy who lived here a long time ago." Being curious he questioned "Who was that kid and what became of him?" Today, it's no different, "Who were these people and what became of them."A special thanks to Richard and Rick Siri for providing additional photos of bottles. We close with a special thank you to both Lou & Leisa Lambert who have been the couple that have continued to make our bottle show a success the first week of May every year. Sawdust in Your Pockets
During the twentieth century, three industries--tobacco, textiles, and furniture--dominated the economy of North Carolina. The first two are well known and documented, being the subject of numerous books, movies, and articles. In contrast, the furniture industry has been mostly ignored by historians, although, at its height, it was nearly as large and influential as these other two concerns. Furniture companies employed thousands of workers and shaped towns, culture, and local life from Hickory to Goldsboro. Sawdust in Your Pockets: A History of the North Carolina Furniture Industry is the first survey of the state's furniture industry from its cabinetmaking beginnings to its digital present. Historian Eric Medlin shows how the industry transitioned from high-quality, individual pieces to the affordable, mass-produced furniture of High Point and Thomasville factories in the late nineteenth century. He then traces the rise of the industry to its midcentury peak, when North Carolina became the largest furniture-producing state in the country. Medlin discusses how competition, consolidation, and globalization challenged the furniture industry in the late twentieth century and how its businesses, workers, and professionals have adapted and evolved to this day.

Christmas Market Munich
The largest and oldest Christmas market in Munich was first documented as a Nikolaimarkt (Nikolausmarkt) in 1310, making it one of the oldest Christmas markets in the German-speaking world. It started as the Welcoming of Christ the Child Christ Kind in German at the beginning of the four Sundays of Advent that ends with Christmas Day, which is the 25 December. The Christmas market is a fair connected with the seasonal period and infused with our religion, which very much organized everybody織s lives back then. In Medieval times, rights to hold fairs were often granted by the feudal lords to convents and bishoprics both as income generation for the religious work and as a city development tool. Many towns trace their prosperity to the market rights. The close association between the local cathedral and the Christmas market is still evident although the taxes now go elsewhere.

Christmas Nativity Salzburg
This little book shows you some of the nativity scenes we have seen and some of the figurines and accessories that you can find in the Christmas markets and shops in and around Salzburg, Austria. You find the most beautiful Tyrolian hand made wooden cribs and figurines here. Nativity is a Catholic tradition, separated in many countries from official society as Christianity no longer has the same function, although European values are deeply steeped in Christianity. In Northern European countries the birth of Jesus is no longer the central theme of the Christmas displays. We show you also some alternative displays, usually with animals, that are used instead to make the children, and adults, happy. Mostly they are in shopping windows and displace for a while the display of some of the commercial goods that is the daily function of the windows.

Temporary and Gig Economy Workers in China and Japan
While a large number of studies exist on political-economic institutional explanations for the prevalence of precarious work, few have delved into the elusive yet critical domain of culture. This is highly pertinent to China and Japan whose shared tradition of Confucianism (broadly defined) continues to inform many aspects of society. In particular, core values such as hierarchy, harmony, and the subordination of individual interests to collective requirements impinge importantly on the iniquitous patterns of precarious work and its surrounding institutions ranging from state policy and legislation to industrial relations and social welfare. The pervasiveness and entrenched nature of culture has been especially evidenced by Japan's distinctly gendered and China's rural-urban citizenship-based labour market stratifications. By bridging culture and institutions, Temporary and Gig Economy Workers in China and Japan brings a more integrated and nuanced understanding of unequal work, casting fresh light on social change in China, Japan, and beyond. Emphasis is placed not only on macro-level structural scrutiny but also on micro-agency empiricism, i.e. real people's experiences in everyday life. This holistic and comparative approach, as demonstrated by the book, will go a long way towards tackling the negative consequences of precarious work in a wider post-pandemic world.
