Triumph
An iconic piece of design and style - and a gold standard in motorcycle engineering - the Triumph has roved through the twentieth century, making its mark in hearts and minds.Founded in Coventry in 1885, Triumph Engineering had humble beginnings, importing bicycles and sewing machines. Railways in Victorian London
Explores how London's railways transformed the city into a global hub, impacting everything from suburbia to crime and culture.London has always been a major transport hub. Indeed, it owes its origins to being the location in ancient times of what was then the lowest bridging point of the River Thames. From the 1830s to 1914 it became the focal point of Britain's railway system. In that time a railway network of extraordinary complexity developed, serving the needs of London's citizens and providing access for huge numbers of visitors of all kinds. Here we consider some of the ways in which the railways contributed to London's transformation into a world city, perhaps THE world city of the Victorian and Edwardian period. With an emphasis on the social impact of the railways, the book examines, among other issues, how they contributed to the growth of suburbia, helped to provide London with vital supplies of food and fuel, the way in which the Underground made it quicker and easier to move about, produced huge, luxurious hotels and spectacular bridges and destroyed some of the capital's worst slums. London has always had an underbelly and the coming of the railways created new opportunities for criminal activity. In fictional crime, Sherlock Holmes made frequent use of the railways. Artists found in railways a source of inspiration for their works. Above all, the railways broke down regionalism and helped to develop and reinforce the domination of London over Britain's political and cultural life.

The Colorful Norfolk Southern
A visual history of Norfolk Southern's evolution from monochrome engines to colorful heritage locomotives and beyond. The Norfolk Southern Railway, formed by the merger of the Norfolk & Western and Southern Railways in 1982, has been known since its inception for the black and white/monochrome livery applied to its locomotives. While both of its predecessors once made use of more colorful hues on their motive power, by the 1970s both roads had turned to black paint, although the Southern also included a horizontal area of off-white in what was termed the "Tuxedo" paint scheme. In 2012, the Norfolk Southern, led by its CEO Charles W. "Wick" Moorman, took to heart the suggestion of a young railroad enthusiast and launched the program that created 20 "Heritage" units, which utilized paint schemes from railroads that had formed the two predecessor roads. Some of these were, indeed, colorful. In subsequent years, this group of locomotives was joined by others that have liveries commemorating a variety of entities, which added to the colorful motive power fleet. In addition, it has also become increasingly common for locomotives from other railroads to operate on the NS and vice versa, adding doses of additional color to what otherwise would be rather somber-looking locomotive servicing facilities.
The Transportation Right of Way
Rethinking Transportation Design, Operation, and RegulationToo often, transportation systems fail the very people they are meant to serve. Although engineers and policymakers design systems based on industry standards, real-world users-drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians-face hazards that are often overlooked. From poorly maintained winter roads to a misalignment in expected versus actual usage due to human factors, these oversights put lives at risk.Forensic transportation engineer Robert Gilchrist evaluates conventional thinking in transportation engineering through a human lens. By discussing the disconnect between industry standards and real-world conditions, he encourages a user-centric approach-one that considers human factors, environmental challenges, and the true cost of system failures. Through case studies, regulation analysis, and expert insights, he challenges current practice and supports an adjustment of baseline thinking to improve safety and decision-making.With decades of experience investigating transportation failures, Gilchrist provides a compelling, accessible guide for engineers, policymakers, lawyers, and system users alike to inspire safer, smarter transportation systems.

Ferrari 308-208-328
While it is true that the V12 engine has always been seen as the most iconic power unit for the road cars - not to mention to the racing models - that have left the factory in Maranello, it is equally true that in the mid-Seventies it was an eight-cylinder car that definitively projected Ferrari towards an industrial dimension. The 308 GTB, which appeared at the 1975 Paris Motor Show, was the model that proved capable of revolutionising the image of the Ferrari berlinettas, an image once again born out of the flair of Leonardo Fioravanti. With its soft yet muscular lines, the 308 took the lead in a long line of GTs from the Cavallino - including the 208 and the 328 - all powered by V8 engines located behind the cockpit and offered with closed and open bodywork, which drove the Maranello marque into the late 1980s, with previously unheard of production figures. Those unforgettable cars, now more than ever sought after by collectors, could hardly be absent from the Supercars series.

The Nebraska Zephyr Story
The Nebraska Zephyr was a streamlined passenger train operated by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad (CB&Q, commonly known by the shorter name of "Burlington") between Chicago, Illinois; Omaha, Nebraska; and Lincoln, Nebraska, from 1947 to 1971. Until 1968, the service was provided by two Twin Cities Zephyr articulated trainsets - the "Train of the Gods" and "Train of the Goddesses" - that became synonymous with it. The Nebraska Zephyr was one of many trains discontinued when Amtrak began operations in 1971. The "Train of the Goddesses" set is preserved at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, Illinois.
MERCEDES-BENZ, The modern SL cars
This 370 page guide covers the history of the four modern SL: the 1971 R107, 1989 R129, 2001 R230 and 2012 R231. It looks at their individual history, engines, facelifts and discusses the AMG versions from the early 500SL 6.0 to the latest SL65. It talks about the designs, special editions and what selected tuners such as Brabus, Renntech or Carlsson had to offer. Complete technical specifications and annual production data of each model can be found towards the end of the book. A few readers have suggested to have each of the four models covered in greater detail. This would have blown up this book to over 800 pages. Given the number of photos included, the price for such a book would have been much too high. But to follow this proposal, the author has decided to give each model more room in individual books. So far the R107, R129 and R230 SL are covered in separate volumes. Published in summer and autumn 2015, they are over 200 pages strong. Each book comes with a comprehensive buyer's guide, explains the VIN and data card in detail and discusses which SL to buy, taking into consideration 2015 second hand prices. FREE BONUS: When you have bought one of the author's printed books, you are eligible for a free pdf file of any Mercedes model (such as W111 or W198 or W136 for example) the author has covered in one of his books. Please contact the author through his website (inside the book) and stipulate, which free pdf file you want him to send to you.
Changing Tracks
How to make a 150-year-old run faster, carry more load and make more money In the year 2000, the Indian Railways - the world's second largest railway network under a single management was nearly bankrupt. Over the next eight years, however, there was a dramatic improvement in its performance. From a cash surplus before dividend of Rs 1,071 crores in 2000, it achieved an estimated Rs 25,000 crores (or around Rs 13,000 crores after accounting for all expenditures, receipts and depreciation) in 2008. Alongside came a dynamic and differential tariff policy, and technical changes that led to an enhanced carrying capacity. How all this was accomplished is the focus of this riveting study of change and innovation in the Indian Railways. Based on an extensive examination of internal documents of the Railways and in-depth interviews with key people involved in the change process, authors V. Nilakant and S. Ramnarayan identify four distinctive features associated with the organization's renewal between 2004 and 2008. The change leveraged the strengths of the organization, instead of being preoccupied with its weaknesses. The aim was to change mindsets about costs, revenues, investment and business models. The momentum of the change process was sustained by fostering positive emotions. Changes were persistently and patiently seen to completion by focusing on results. Confronting several myths about organizational change, the book offers powerful lessons for managers and administrators grappling with the challenges of generating innovation and improving performance radically in a changing world.
With a Hammer and a Wrench
When the first edition of this book appeared in Germany in 2003, Soviet and Russian motorcycles were considered the epitome of "junk on wheels". They were just suitable for rough riding fun on one's own property, or only conditionally suitable for everyday use by hopeless optimists. Back then, anyone who dared to take on the adventure of riding a Dnepr or Ural had to be very brave and constantly defend themselves against the taunts of people who knew better. Today-some twenty years later-things don't look much better, but the former cheap imports from the other side of the Iron Curtain have matured into genuine vintage vehicles with a steadily growing fan base. At the same time, the legacy of post-Stalinist mass production has given rise to a small motorcycle manufacture that builds primeval Russian stones to current standards. Riding a Russian motorcycle-whether old or new-is an exceptional way of life. It educates one to slowness, pragmatism, and the ability to suffer. This book helps with that. It is intended to open up the world of these survivors of times long past, primarily to those who are thinking of buying a classic 650cc Ural or Dnepr. Or to give the new "Russian driver" a profound insight into the history of these controversial vehicles. And in particular it should clear up the half-truths and rumors that persist today at the regulars' table or even in the trade press. After more than 100,000 km with his Ural "without any special incidents" (measured by the world view of an Ural driver), the author set to work to combine experiences and interesting facts about history and technology-from the great-grandmother and BMW copy "M72" to the current generation-into a guidebook that quickly established itself as a standard work and is now finally available in English.

All Aboard for Santa Fe
By the late 1800s, the major mode of transportation for travelers to the Southwest was by rail. In 1878, the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway Company (AT&SF) became the first railroad to enter New Mexico, and by the late 1890s it controlled more than half of the track-miles in the Territory. The company wielded tremendous power in New Mexico, and soon made tourism an important facet of its financial enterprise. All Aboard for Santa Fe focuses on the AT&SF's marketing efforts to highlight Santa Fe as an ideal tourism destination. The company marketed the healthful benefits of the area's dry desert air, a strong selling point for eastern city-dwelling tuberculosis sufferers. AT&SF also joined forces with the Fred Harvey Company, owner of numerous hotels and restaurants along the rail line, to promote Santa Fe. Together, they developed materials emphasizing Santa Fe's Indian and Hispanic cultures, promoting artists from the area's art colonies, and created the Indian Detours sightseeing tours. All Aboard for Santa Fe is a comprehensive study of AT&SF's early involvement in the establishment of western tourism and the mystique of Santa Fe.

Can the Rail Industries Flatcar Inventory Support Two Major Theater Wars?
The ability of U.S. forces to change rapidly from a peacetime to a wartime force (to mobilize and deploy) is vitally important to national security. Successful execution of these movements depends, in large part, on the availability of the required transportation resources. Today's Army is heavily dependent on Department of Defense (DoD) and commercial railcar assets to move its wheeled/tracked vehicles from home forts to seaports of embarkation (SPOEs) to meet prescribed mobilization and deployment timelines. The primary research question answered by this paper is: Can U.S. military and commercial flatcar inventories meet DoD mobilization requirements for Army wheeled/tracked vehicles during two near-simultaneous major theater wars (MTWs)?This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Burlington Northern Adventures
Brotherton recounts his experiences as brakeman, conductor, and trainmaster on Burlington Northern Railroad.Burlington Northern Adventures relates the personal experiences of the author William J. Brotherton, who went "railroading" as a brakeman, conductor, and trainmaster for the Burlington Northern Railroad system from 1979 to 1982. Through his many interesting short stories, Brotherton illustrates what it was like to work for a major railroad company before branch lines, vintage diesel locomotives, and cabooses were phased out. His accounts show what has changed within the railroad industry since then--and what has not.Brotherton, who grew up around trains in Georgia, takes the reader along on his personal encounters with a railroader's life in North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, Minnesota, and Colorado. Now a lawyer, nothing in the courtroom compares to hanging on a boxcar in thirty-five-below weather working a local in North Dakota. He truly believed he would put in his thirty years with the railroad once he received his promotion to trainmaster with the Colorado & Southern Railway, a part of the Burlington Northern Railroad system--but he soon found that being a trainmaster was a special kind of hell.

Railroaded
An incisive illustrated history of the ill-planned and calamitous construction of Halifax's railway from the author of Atlantic's Last Stop. Halifax in the early twentieth century had a problem. It was in the wrong place in a thinly populated country, far from Canada's builders, spenders, movers, and shakers. Grumbling about the city's subpar performance in the movement of goods, people, and mail had become a time-honoured pastime. Halifax was the closest big Canadian port to Europe, but more than forty-five years after Confederation, rail and shipping services to the city were not making the grade. Expectations were high on October 30, 1912, when the man who could finally fix things?Frank Cochrane, the federal minister of Railways and Canals?came to town to make a big announcement. The stars were aligned. The question was, would the stars be bright enough to lead Halifax out of its dormancy? Over the next four years, dynamite and steam shovels would create havoc, throwing hundreds of people out of their homes, devour four hundred acres of prime municipal real estate, cover two huge swaths of the harbour, annihilate two kilometres of shoreline, and cut a deep gash eight kilometres long across the city?all to build a rail cut that confounds transportation to this day. Illustrated with photos and hand-drafted maps, Railroaded: The Untold History of Halifax's Rail Cut is a story about how powerless citizens are when their elected government decides it wants something they have?including their homes?in a desperate grasp at a prosperous future.
