The Power of the Duchesses
Derived from the earlier Stanier 'Princess Royal' Pacific design of 1933-5, the Stanier 'Duchesses' were the epitome of LMS express passenger locomotive design. Originally designated the 'Coronation' class, they first appeared from Crewe works in 1937 and commenced running on the high-speed 'Coronation Scot' services. The first examples were streamlined, but in 1938 a non-streamlined version was also built. Double chimneys were fitted from 1939, and retrospectively to those with single chinmeys. Of the 38 locomotives built between 1937 and 1948 (when the final Ivatt version appeared) 24 were streamliners. After the war the streamlining was removed and all the classes were fitted with smoke deflectors. Withdrawal of the class, which were the LMS answer to the celebrated LNER Gresley A4 class Pacifics, commenced in 1962 with the last examples being withdrawn in September 1964.

This book provides a unique overview of the impacts of railways on biodiversity, integrating the existing knowledge on the ecological effects of railways on wildlife, identifying major knowledge gaps and research directions and presenting the emerging field of railway ecology.The book is divided into two major parts: Part one offers a general review of the major conceptual and theoretical principles of railway ecology. A Mighty Fine Road
The Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad's history is one of big booms and bigger busts. When it became the first railroad to reach and then cross the Mississippi River in 1856, it emerged as a leading American railroad company. Buried Dreams
The Hoosac railroad tunnel in the mountains of northwestern Massachusetts was a nineteenth-century engineering and construction marvel, on par with the Brooklyn Bridge, Transcontinental Railroad, and Erie Canal. The longest tunnel in the Western Hemisphere at the time (4.75 miles), it took nearly twenty-five years (1851‒1875), almost two hundred casualties, and tens of millions of dollars to build. Yet it failed to deliver on its grandiose promise of economic renewal for the commonwealth, and thus is little known today. Andrew R. Black's Buried Dreams refreshes public memory of the project, explaining how a plan of such magnitude and cost came to be in the first place, what forces sustained its completion, and the factors that inhibited its success. Jeep, Dana & Chrysler Differentials

Over the last 40 years, millions of Chrysler, AMC, and Jeep vehicles have used these differentials, propelling these high-performance vehicles to victory on the street, in drag racing, and other applications. Chrysler used the Dana 60 and BorgWarner Sure-Grip high-performance differentials in the Challenger, Charger, Barracuda, Super Bee and many other renowned Chrysler muscle cars.
