Balls Three
The NB-52A 52-0003 and its sister ship, the NB-52B 52-0008 were diverted to the special mission of launching the X-15 hypersonic research airplane in 1958 following their service as early test examples of the B-52 Stratofortress. While the two Stratofortresses were engaged in the task of launching the three X-15 rocket planes, a series of rocket powered lifting bodies were developed that utilized the existing air launch capability. The NB-52A was a flying launch pad, which is a highly complex task. It had to supply the rocket planes that it carried with the propellants, gases, and power normally associated with a launch pad at the Kennedy Space Center, all while flying nine miles above the ground. This ability made the airplane an indispensable asset for aeronautical research. Its right wing was reinforced and equipped with a pylon to carry the heaviest wing-borne payloads ever dropped from an airplane. Some of the payloads that it dropped exceeded 50,000 pounds, nearly 1/5 of its own weight. The X-15 rocket planes launched by this Stratofortress carried pilots to unprecedented speeds and altitudes. They were the first winged vehicles to reach speeds of Mach-4, Mach-5, and Mach-6. They were also the first winged vehicles to exceed 130,000 feet altitude, eventually reaching over 364,000 feet, high above nearly all the Earth's atmosphere. Five pilots qualified for astronaut's wings by exceeding an altitude of fifty miles in the X-15s. Tragically, one of those astronauts was killed on his qualifying flight when the third X-15 broke up as it re-entered the atmosphere. Later in the career of the NB-52A, the X-15s were joined by a trio of heavyweight lifting bodies. The Northrop M2-F2 and HL-10 and the Martin Marietta X-24A were wingless, rocket-powered research vehicles that evaluated potential configurations of future orbital spacecraft, concentrating on the later stages of re-entry and landing. They established the feasibility of gliding to a landing in a spacecraft with a low glide ratio, the method utilized by the Rockwell Space Shuttle.
Flying
Here for the first time in a single volume are three of Richard Bach's most compelling works about flight. From his edgy days as a USAF Alert pilot above Europe in an armed F84-F Thunderstreak during the Cold War to a meander across America in a 1929 biplane, Bach explores the extreme edges of the air, his airplane, and himself in glorious writing about how it feels to climb into a machine, leave the earth, and fly. Only a handful of writers have translated their experiences in the cockpit into books that have mesmerized generations.
Botts Breaks Hollywood
The Golden Age of Hollywood was at its height in the 1930s and the world's best tractor salesman was captivated by the glitz and glamour. The Colombo Bay
In the face of killer storms, fires, piracy, and terrorism, container ships the length of city blocks and more than a dozen stories high carry 90 percent of the worlds trade. This is an account of one ship's voyage and of the sailors who daily risk their lives to deliver six million containers a year to United States ports alone. Inside these twenty-foot and forty-foot steel boxes are the thousands of imports -- from chinos and Game Boys to garlic and frozen shrimp -- without which North America's consumer society would collapse. To explore this little-known and dangerous universe of modern seafaring, Richard Pollak joined the Colombo Bay in Hong Kong and over the next five weeks sailed with her and her 3,500 containers across the South China Sea, the Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean, and the Atlantic. En route, this mammoth vessel called at Singapore and Colombo, passed through the Suez Canal (toll: $250,000), then put in at Malta and Halifax before tangling with Hurricane Karen on the two-day run to New York. Here is the story of the ship's unheralded twenty-four-man company; of the unflappable British captain, Peter Davies, a veteran of four decades at sea; of Federico Castrojas, who like the rest of the hard-working Filipino crew must daily confront the loneliness of being away from his family for nine months at a stretch; of Simon Westall, the twenty-one-year-old third mate, who reveals what it is like to be gay in the broad-shouldered world of the merchant service. It is a world where pirates in the Malacca Strait sneak up behind ships at night in fast power boats, then clamber aboard and either rob the unarmed sailors at gunpoint and escape into the dark or throw the crew into the sea and hijack the ship, plundering her cargo and sometimes repainting her and setting out to do business under another name and flag. It is a world where families desperate to get to the United States or Europe pay thousands of dollars to the Chinese Snakeheads and other criminal gangs, who secrete these wretched migrants in stifling containers; after a week or more at sea these stowaways arrive in the Promised Land either starving or dead. Pollak sailed on September 13, 2001, into a changed world, on one of 7,000 container ships whose millions of uninspected boxes suddenly had become potential Trojan horses in which terrorists could transport weapons of mass destruction into the heart of the United States. Throughout his riveting narrative, Pollak interweaves the insights of Herman Melville and Joseph Conrad, whose masterful portrayals of seafaring make the voyage of the Colombo Bay a dramatic reminder of what a hard and rarely reported life merchant seamen have always led out on the "unhooped oceans of this planet."

Pressing On
Pressing On is an exploration of an aviation safety problem that has plagued commercial airline operators for years. Recent airline accidents like Asiana 214 at the San Francisco International Airport (see cover image) provide examples of this phenomenon, when pilots continue an unstable approach to a landing attempt. The risk of collision with terrain and/or a runway excursion has been identified by both governmental regulators and airlines alike, yet this risk to a catastrophe continues to exist on a regular basis in the National Airspace System.Find out why a pilot would risk an accident or incident when deciding to press on when faced with evidence of an unstable approach. Pressing On is filled with an in-depth technical and historical background on unstable approach risk and serves as a window into the issues associated with not only the reasons airline accidents of this type occur, but how to predict these events and prevent them from happening.Follow along as Captain Odisho puts you in the flight deck of a commercial airliner approaching a landing at a busy metropolitan airport. Learn how widespread the problem of pilot unstable approach risk is in the airline industry, how previous safety risk mitigation strategies have not been successful, and how his research provides a path forward to eliminate the problem of pilots pressing on to landing during an unstable approach.
Autonomous Vehicles
Autonomous Vehicles: Technologies, Regulations, and Societal Impacts explores both the autonomous driving concepts and the key hardware and software enablers, Artificial intelligence tools, needed infrastructure, communication protocols, and interaction with non-autonomous vehicles. The book assess from a qualitative and quantitative approach, the future of autonomous driving, and the main drivers, challenges, and barriers. The book investigates whether individuals are ready to use advanced automated driving vehicles technology, and to what extent we as a society are prepared to accept highly automated vehicles on the road. Building on the technologies, opportunities, strengths, threats, and weaknesses, Autonomous Vehicles: Technologies, Regulations, and Societal Impacts discusses the needed frameworks for automated vehicles to move inside and around cities. The book concludes with a discussion on what in applications comes next, outlining the future research needs.
Enlightened Mobility
Foreword by renowned climate scientist Hans von Storch. The man-made greenhouse effect has been validated by science. Transportation with its high carbon intensity is a major driver of the greenhouse effect. It makes up for one quarter of global carbon dioxide emissions. These emissions come burning fossil fuel for cars, trucks, ships, trains, and planes and they significantly contribute to global warming. This climate change will not only result in rising sea levels that will put coastal cities at risk but will also have severe ecological, physical and health impacts. The public discussion on how to fight climate change mostly evolves around symbolic actions whose effect is rather doubtful. Will prohibiting domestic flights in France significantly reduce carbon emissions? How about introducing restrictive speed limits on roads? Should we keep flying at all?Enlightened Mobility applies a fact-based, rational approach to outline the most beneficial strategies to combat climate change in the transportation sector. Based on the author's experience from 15 years of consulting in mobility and transportation, it focuses on the major levers. These are Technology, Modal Shift, and Demand Management. The book explains why our current local and national thinking is doomed to fail and where resources need to be invested to have the maximum impact on emission reduction. At the same time, the author suggests a new mobility paradigm and paints a picture of the multimodal future of transportation. A provocative vision that challenges widespread thinking and common knowledge.

The Bounty Mutiny
A trip across the Pacific turns into a life or death scenario when the crew of the HMS Bounty stages a revolt against their commander. The Bounty Mutiny tells the controversial story of the mutineers and the acting lieutenant who sparked a movement. Commanding Lieutenant William Bligh was instructed to use the HMS Bounty to transport breadfruit plants to the West Indies. He worked alongside skilled colleague Fletcher Christian, who was selected to be acting lieutenant. During their time at sea, the crew experienced many challenges with complaints of abuse and tyranny at the hands of Bligh. This eventually leads to a mutiny, in which Christian and the crew take control of the vessel. This harrowing tale is one of the most adapted events of all-time. Over the past century, it has been interpretated across multiple mediums including five feature films starring George Cross, Errol Flynn, Clark Gable, Marlon Brando and Anthony Hopkins. It's an enduring story that continues to fascinate and provoke the masses. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Bounty Mutiny is both modern and readable.

Props and Jets
The June 25, 1925, inauguration of Rodgers Field marked the beginning of Allegheny County Commissioners' investment into commercial aviation. A modest acquisition of 40 acres that has with time evolved to the presence of the 1500 acre Pittsburgh International Airport across town. This book chronicles the dreams, successes, failures, promises, and fatalities in the intervening events from 1923 to the opening of the commercial terminal at the Greater Pittsburgh Airport (GRP) in 1952. Over time, Rodgers Field, the first field, could not be enlarged, expansion of Allegheny County Airport, the second field, proved too expensive, with GRP, the third field, finally large enough to fill the needs of the commercial and military needs. In the 1920s and 1930s the political leadership of Allegheny County struggled to craft the best aviation facility to attract military and commercial interests. Experience with the shortcomings of Rodgers Field provided guidance in the design of the Allegheny County Airport. During World War Two, Pittsburgh lay in the flight path of immense numbers of thirsty military aircraft being flown from one area of the United States to another. The breadth of the Greater Pittsburgh Airport provided the necessary space for runways and parking areas to accommodate the impressive traffic landing for refueling, maintenance and repair. In that time period, the media devoted most of their attention to the battle arenas, in foreign lands and on distant oceans. Conflicts won meant yet another step to victory when the United States service men and women could return home. But the success 'over there' was totally dependent upon the war production system 'over here.' In addition to the military history of Rodgers Field, this work details the worthy participation 'over here' of the two Allegheny County airfields. 162 photos, illustrations, drawings, documents. A Merriam Press Aviation History.
A Wrench in the Wings
A Wrench in the Wings is a compilation of columns written for Air Maintenance Update magazine. Spending all my adult life either fixing aircraft or teaching others to carry on in that profession has been an enlightening journey. Based on stories that I related to my aircraft maintenance students, the benefits were three-fold. First, it tended to keep their attention with real insight into daily life as an aircraft mechanic. Second, it gave me a chance to show the more human side of myself while hopefully injecting some humor into the classroom. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the stories often ended with lessons learned. These lessons were about the realities and responsibilities of our chosen profession, but also about life in general. Many topics are touched upon, from rapid decompression to rock stars and everything in between. I hope that you find them interesting, whether you are an aviation enthusiast or perhaps someone considering a career as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer. Like most careers, it has its ups and downs. Here is hoping that you enjoy the ride.

Premonitions of the Titanic Disaster
Passengers cancelling their tickets for Titanic's maiden voyage out of apprehension; a famous social reformer who died on Titanic, warned in 1911 that he would be in danger from water in April 1912; inhabitants of the remote islands of Fiji aware of the sinking before reports of the collision reached the Pacific; a dying girl who, on 14 April 1912, 'sees' a big ship sinking in the water and mysteriously knows the name of the violinist in Titanic's orchestra. These are just a few of the numerous claims to psychic foreknowledge of the ship's sinking.Within days of the widely-publicised disaster of 1912, stories began circulating of extraordinary omens and individuals who supposedly had supernatural premonitions of the disaster. Furthermore, four fictional works - one dating as far back as twenty-six years - came to be seen as anticipating the disaster. Between 1960 and 2006, five major commentators published extended analyses of the alleged premonitions, none of which is now easily accessible to an English readership. This book examines them all in detail. The whole treatment of the matter opens up fascinating questions concerning the paranormal, but also raises and leaves unresolved crucial issues specific to premonitions and how they can be legitimately examined. Readers are left to make their own judgement on Titanic premonitions.

Giants Of The Sea
"Giants Of The Sea: Ships & Men Who Changed The World" covers the history and development of the modern cargo shipping industry in 330 pages spread across 30 discrete chapters. The history of cargo shipping going back to the Egyptians moving obelisks by barge on the Nile is covered, but the focus is on the post-war revolution in shipping cost efficiency through specialization and geometric increases in vessel size. With detailed information on what comprises each major shipping segment today, it also includes chapters on the nine men whose fingerprints are still all over the industry. Three Americans, two Danes, two Greeks and two Chinese. The modern worldwide cargo shipping industry stands on the shoulders of these giants. The author, who worked on a daily basis for twenty years with Malcom McLean, the inventor of container shipping, demonstrates the direct link between the efficiency of the shipping industry and the explosion in world trade it has enabled. The book outlines how today's shipping industry touches almost everyone on the planet in ways that they may not even be aware. In addition to highlighting the industry's contribution to the global economy, the book makes the case that it has been a prime catalyst in reducing poverty and even increasing peace around the world. Packed with interesting and fun facts in an 81/2" x 11" hardcover format, it is the author's hope that this broad sweep of a largely invisible industry is an informative and enjoyable read for people both inside and outside of shipping.
Aerospace Predictive Maintenance
Aerospace Predictive Maintenance: Fundamental Concepts, written by longtime practitioner Charles E. Dibsdale based in the UK, considers PdM a subset of Condition Based Maintenance (CBM), and must obey the same underlying rules and pre-requisites that apply to it. Yet, PdM is new because it takes advantage of emerging digital technology in sensing, acquiring data, communicating the data, and processing it. This capability can autonomously analyse the data and send alerts and advice to decision makers, potentially reducing through-life cost and improving safety.Aerospace Predictive Maintenance: Fundamental Concepts provides a history of maintenance, and how performance, safety and the environment make direct demands on maintenance to deliver more for less in multiple industries. It also covers Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) that aims to provide a platformcentric framework for PdM in the mobility domain. The book discusses PdM maturity, offering a context of the transformation of data through information and knowledge. Understanding some of the precepts of knowledge management provides a really useful and powerful perspective on PdM as an information system. On the other hand, Aerospace Predictive Maintenance: Fundamental Concepts also discusses disadvantages of PdM and shows how these may be addressed. One of the fundamental changes PdM implies is a shift from deterministic black-and-white thinking to more nuanced decision making informed by probabilities and uncertainty. Other concerns such as data management, privacy and ownership are tackled as well.Aerospace Predictive Maintenance: Fundamental Concepts covers additional technologies, such as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT) that will result in proliferation of cheap, wireless, ultra-low-power sensors, and will transform PdM into a more economical option. The book brings in the future possibilities of nano technology, which can be used for new sensors, micro-robotics for inspections and self-healing/repairing of systems which can be intergrated with PdM.

Introduction to Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul of Aircraft, Engines and Components brings together the basic aspects of a fundamentally important part of the aerospace industry, the one that supports the global technical efforts to keep passenger and cargo planes flying reliably and safely. Over time, aircraft components and structural parts are subject to environmental effects, such as corrosion and other types of material deterioration, wear and fatigue. Such parts could fail in service and affect the safe operation of the aircraft if the degradation were not detected and addressed in time. Regular planned maintenance supports the current and future value of the aircraft by minimizing the physical decline of the aircraft and engines throughout its life. Introduction to Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul of Aircraft, Engines and Components was written by the industry veteran, Shevantha K. Weerasekera, an aerospace engineer with 20+ years of aircraft maintenance experience, who currently leads the engineering team of a major technical enterprise in the field.
Connected and Automated Vehicles
Disruption in Transportation, as some experts say, is here; so is this book at this critical inflection point in the history of transportation planning, engineering, and operations. With a focus on improving safety and maximizing available systems to accommodate all modes of travel, this work brings together an array of topics and themes on transportation technologies under the banner of Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAV). The emerging technology implementing entities, industry leaders, original equipment manufacturers, standard development organizations, researchers, and others are singularly focused on a global multilogue to promote Safety, Mobility, Environment, and Economic Development (SMEEd). These discussions are technologically interdisciplinary and procedurally cross-functional, hence the need for CAV: Developing Policies, Designing Programs, and Deploying Projects. This book is aimed at the policy-maker who wants to know the high-level detail; the planner who chooses to pursue the most efficient path to implementation; the professional engineer who needs to design a sustainable system; the practitioner who considers deployable frameworks; the project manager who oversees the system deployment; the private sector consultant who develops and delivers a CAV program; and the researcher who evaluates the project benefits and documents lessons learned. This book makes a business case for implementing CAV technologies to achieve SMEEd goals; presents the possibilities and challenges to deploying emerging technologies; identifies the institutional roles and responsibilities; and develops a policy framework for mainstreaming CAV.

Drones
This book is an everything-included approach to understanding drones, creating an organization around using unmanned aircraft, and outlining the process of safety to protect that program. It is the first-of-a-kind safety-focused text book for unmanned aircraft operations, providing the reader with a required understanding of hazard identification, risk analysis, mitigation, and promotion. It enables the reader to speak the same language as any civil aviation authority, and gives them the toolset to create a safety risk management program for unmanned aircraft. The main items in this book break down into three categories. The first approach is understanding how the drone landscape has evolved over the last 40 years. From understanding the military components of UAS to the standards and regulations evolution, the reader garners a keen understanding of where we came from and why it matters for moving forward. The second approach is in understanding how safety risk management in aviation can be applied to drones, and how that fits into the regulatory and legislative environment internationally. Lastly, a brief synopsis of the community landscape for unmanned aircraft is outlined with interviews from important leaders and stakeholders in the marketplace.Drones fills a gap in resources within the unmanned aircraft world. It provides a robust understanding of drones, while giving the tools necessary to apply for a certificate of authorization, enabling more advanced flight operations for any company, and developing safety risk management tools for students and career professionals. It will be a mainstay in all safety program courses and will be a required tool for any and all individuals looking to operate safely and successfully in the United States.
Fasten Your Seatbelt: The Passenger Is Flying the Plane
Fasten Your Seatbelt: The Passenger is Flying the Plane is the fourth in a series written at the encouragement of practitioners in the global airline industry. Core customers are beginning to seize control of the direction of the industry from airline management. Customers are doing so due to deep dissatisfaction with what is being offered by traditional carriers across all areas, including network, product, price, customer service and the distribution system. New airlines have clearly focused business designs with the discipline to reject non-valued products or services. In the US, new airlines score higher in customer satisfaction, offering lower fares and making larger operating profits. This book is about customer behaviour and how to address it. It provides detailed but easy-to-read practical discussion of the changes required on the part of airline management not only to think boldly, but also to execute courageously and relentlessly, ground-breaking strategies to fly ahead of their customers. As with previous books written by Nawal Taneja, the primary audience continues to be senior level practitioners within the global airline industry - in both traditional carrier and low complexity carrier segments. The approach is impartial, candid and pragmatic, based on what is happening in the actual market place rather than theoretical business models.

Abstract The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has received considerable critical attention from the infrastructure, political and media worlds. Most reports and articles on the subject are confused at best, when they are not completely misinformed or contradictory. To date there has been little agreement on the number of BRI projects, amounts spent, dates, and geographical distribution. A global information warfare campaign of mis-information, disinformation, and intoxication is currently at play about the BRI, which direct result is to confuse the situation even more... This book critically examines what China's BRI is about, clarifies the confusion, and answers many questions. It includes a first-time-ever-published list and statistical tables of all the BRI projects up to December 31st, 2018. A mixed-methods approach was used in the data analysis, and the theory of constraints underpins this research as a theoretical framework. BRI projects are classified by projects' name, date, status, value, country, region, industry, and transportation mode. Additional never-published-before tables describe seven transportation modes. These tables are instrumental to our understanding of the BRI and are unpacked and analyzed in great detail in one section of this book. This work also demonstrates how instrumental the BRI is to globalization, which in itself is conducive to humanity's evolution. It describes humanity's five key choke points, and apprehends how China and the BRI are addressing them. In conclusion, we share an interview with a special Chinese lady, who benefits from a long China history's oversight. She shows us the Chinese perception of China and of the world. She tells us what China's point of view and ambitions are, especially as far as the BRI is concerned. The Rules (commonly called 72 COLREGS) are part of the Convention, and vessels flying the flags of states ratifying the treaty are bound to the Rules. The United States has ratified this treaty and all United States flag vessels must adhere to these Rules where applicable. President Gerald R. Ford proclaimed 72 COLREGS and the Congress adopted them as the International Navigational Rules Act of 1977. The 72 COLREGS were developed by the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO) which in May 1982 was renamed the International Maritime Organization (IMO). In November 1981, IMO's Assembly adopted 55 amendments to the 72 COLREGS which became effective on June 16, 1983. The IMO also adopted 9 more amendments which became effective on June 29, 1989. A single amendment became effective March 19, 1991. In 1993 8 amendments were adopted by the IMO which entered into force in 1995. The IMO adopted 9 amendments which entered into force November 29, 2003. Lastly, a single amendment was adopted which updated the Distress signals and entered into force on December 1, 2009. The International Rules in this book contain these amendments. These Rules are applicable on waters outside of established navigational lines of demarcation. The lines are called COLREGS Demarcation Lines and delineate those waters upon which mariners shall comply with the Inland and International Rules. COLREGS Demarcation Lines are contained in this book.
