Intelligent Transportation Related Complex Systems and Sensors
Complex systems are systems composed of different components that interact with each other. A well-known example of complex systems are the so-called intelligent transportation systems (ITS). In such systems, amongst others, the environment is highly dynamic. Complex systems often manifest rich, non-trivial and unexpected behaviours. Examples of transportation-related complex systems are: road traffic, traffic sensors, autonomous/automated cars, smart cities, smart sensors, virtual sensors, traffic control systems, smart roads, logistics systems, smart mobility systems, etc.There are several challenges that constitute very interesting research problems, which should be solved appropriately. For example, the increasing number of vehicles and inhabitants, the low support of secondary infrastructure, the costs and the safety requirements, etc. are challenges that lead to a trade-off to balance between the engineering solutions, costs, environment, and safety. However, to master the efficient operation of various transportation-related complex systems, a series of sensor/sensing, data quality, online simulation, and modelling- and optimization-related issues are of extreme high actual interest. Nyora - born Ray Barden left his hometown for a career in the Victorian Railways starting as a Lad Porter, where through hard work and natural talent he rose through the ranks to its upper levels of Management.His straight- from-the -shoulder, no nonsense, sometimes blunt management style forged allies and created enemies in the department, in politics and with some rail unions. He was regarded as somewhat unorthodox in style; honest and confronting; tough but fair and as a man who could get a job done in the most difficult circumstances.In the years when the increasingly moribund Victorian Railways was struggling to modernise and become financially viable Ray Barden's "tell it as it is" manner saw him respected by many but disliked by some. In the end the organization failed, and Ray's detractors ensured that he was sidelined. He fell on his sword in 1985 at a critical time politically, and for railways.Ray's 33-year career is bracketed by humble beginnings and an active, interesting semi-retirement which saw him and Carmel, his devoted wife of many years, travelling Australia and overseas developing their hobby farm, and being involved in community activities.A Man of Principle is far from a "sour grapes" memoir. It provides an insight into the inner workings of the Victorian Railways management at a time of great change as told by someone who was there, challenging the status quo.
The Last Voyage of the Clotilda, the True Story of the Last Slave Ship Voyage (1914)
"Roche published the first account of the last slave ship to enter the United States....She was the artist/writer daughter of a prominent white family here. She spent a great deal of time interviewing the people who had been illegally brought into South Alabama to be the slaves of several local men." -Michael Thomason, PhD, Lagniappe Weekly In 1914 Emma Langdon Roche (1878-1945) published the book "Historic Sketches of the South," which book included several chapters on the last voyage of the schooner Clotilda which was the last known U.S. slave ship to bring captives from Africa to the United States. It is these chapters on the Clotilda, comprising about 25 pages, which have been republished here for the convenience of the interested reader. In July 1860, the schooner Clotilda, under the command of Captain William Foster and carrying a cargo of 110 enslaved Africans, arrived in Mobile Bay. Captain Foster was working for Timothy Meaher, a wealthy Mobile shipyard owner and steamboat captain, who had built Clotilda in 1856 for the lumber trade. Meaher was said to have wagered some "Northern gentlemen" from New England, who likely provided the financing for the illegal venture, that he could successfully smuggle slaves into the US despite the 1807 Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves. Regarding the slaves comprising the cargo, Roche notes: "THE slaves who constituted the Clotilde's cargo and who have become historic by being the last brought into the United States were captured by Dahomey's warriors and Amazons on one of their cruel excursions. For many years the tribe of Dahomey had been a scourge to the weaker and more peaceable tribes whose domains lay near the Gold Coast or in the interior away from the coast of Guinea."

In my 2004 book, Turbulent Skies, I wrote, "Maybe someday someone will write about the incredible actions of the flight crews on the morning of September 11, 2001." This wish began to manifest in the 10th year after 9/11 when I had an overwhelming sensation that I should undertake this quest myself. In my first year of writing, as I researched and wrote, my body would chill, and I would cry. Once an article was finished, I could hardly get up out of my chair. I truly felt like I was on the planes with the crews. I knew if I was to continue, I had to control all that emotion. The book's focus initially was on the flight crews. But as I wrote, it became so much more. The reader will learn how the air traffic controllers cleared the skies, how Canada responded by handling all the incoming international flights, and how the failures of the FAA, the FBI, the CIA, and the airlines allowed this attack to take place. I realized that September 11th could have been even more disastrous had it not been for the actions of those brave crew members and little miracles that occurred that day. I also realized how it might have been prevented if the crews had been properly trained and informed about the threat they were facing. The book further examines how political forces changed the priorities for counter terrorism, and also impeded the examination of how the attacks could happen. These political forces were challenged by four New Jersey widows who got the 9/11 hearings approved. Finally, this book examines the aftermath of the attack, and how it forever changed the airline profession and added significant restrictions on traveling public.
Education of a Wandering Young Man
Convinced that an overseas education with ample opportunities for traveling is superior to a local one, Lam took up a Singapore government scholarship to study in Loughborough, UK. Beginning with the very first winter vacation in Germany, where he travelled solo and almost lost his life on a highway in Cologne, he tried to visit a different country every vacation. Whenever possible, he would stay with locals so as to learn about their culture and way of life, such as working on a kibbutz in Israel, lingering on a farm in Zambia, and trekking from one village to another in the Kelabit Highlands in Sarawak. In the five years covered in this book, he had set foot on five continents and interacted with people of diverse nationalities and ethnic tribes. The experiences had enriched his life beyond the confines of the four walls of a classroom; they constituted a form of education which he considers superior to the conventional approach through books and the internet. He believes that what one learns by rote, one is likely to forget later, but what one has personally experienced, one is likely to remember for life. For this reason, he chose to experience life.

Leader
Leader is a fantastic and rare surviving example of a Brixham gaff rigged ketch fishing vessel, which built by A W Gibbs's Galmpton Creek boat yard which was on the River Dart in Devon, UK. Leader was built in 1892 for William Robbens for 瞿1,100. In Leader's later years, she was still used for fishing (in Scandinavian waters) between 1907 and 1927. This book contains a one-page biography of the historic sailing vessel Leader with a Leader logbook stamp, also included are photographs from on deck, below deck and whilst under sail. The American Road
In The American Road Katherine M. Johnson develops a bold new theory for how the American highway system has taken on such outsized scale and complexity by emphasizing the emergence of a powerful administrative apparatus in the American federal system. Established in 1914 expressly to intervene in the congressional debates of the era, the American highway bureaucracy consisted of forty-eight state highway officials acting in and through their self-organized association, the American Association of State Highway Officials. Johnson's central argument is that this new institution occupied a similar position relative to the American state as political parties and courts did. The capacity to organize across a complex constitutional order enabled it to control the purpose and allocation of federal highway aid for the better part of the twentieth century. Johnson investigates this new conception of the American highway bureaucracy, showing specifically where and how that extraconstitutional authority emerged, expanded, and manifested itself in the legislative history, physical dimensions, and geographical reach of the emerging highway system. The American Road reveals that all of the major highway legislation approved by Congress from 1916 to 1941 was collectively developed and advanced by state and federal highway bureaucrats drawing on the new authority conferred by the system of federal grants-in-aid, which required state legislatures to provide a state matching grant and local governments to relinquish control over decisions of location and design. The capacity to advance their policy aims as both the advice of experts and the will of the states not only secured the new highway program against renewed opposition in Congress in the 1920s but also won the strong support of the motor vehicle industry and set the stage for even more impressive policy gains of the 1930s when highways became the largest category of federal emergency public works. That collective authority, however, required a high threshold of consensus to secure and maintain, producing not just a narrow one-size-fits-all approach to technical issues but also a striking incapacity to respond to changing conditions. Johnson completes her compelling narrative by identifying the source of the interstate highway plan, first proposed in 1939 and finally funded in 1956, in the internal dynamics of and external threats to that extraconstitutional authority.

Bizarrely, the Judge named the correct MoD recipient in court. Applying this information would have saved Sean Cunningham's life.The Health and Safety Executive and Lincolnshire Police did not evaluate verbal, written and video evidence proving the allegation false. The Judge and Coroner were misled. This subversion of the judicial system has placed military aircrew, passengers and the public at greater risk.Also discussed is post-trial misconduct by the HSE and BBC; linkages to the Shoreham Air Display accident, in which the Air Accidents Investigation Branch confirmed MoD had the information necessary to avoid the death of Sean Cunningham; and a brief analysis of the Service Inquiry report into the death of Corporal Jonathan Bayliss, passenger in a Red Arrows Hawk which crashed in March 2018; revealing twelve common factors with the death of Sean Cunningham.
