Tupolev Tu-144
Developed in the 1960s/1970s, the Tu-144 was the Soviet Union's only practical venture into supersonic commercial aviation. Though its career was all too brief, it was a major technological achievement for the Soviet aircraft industry. The book provides in-depth coverage of the "Concordski," including projected versions, the Tu-144's production and service history, and a comparison with the Concorde. First flown on the last day of 1968--ahead of the Concorde--the Tu-144 had to undergo a long gestation period before the production version entered service in November 1977. Unfortunately, its career proved to be brief; two accidents and a powerful anti-Tu-144 lobby caused the type to be withdrawn in May 1978. The Great Western Railway Plymouth to Penzance
The Cornwall Railway was authorised on 3 August 1846 with the aim of constructing a broad gauge rail link between Plymouth, Truro and Falmouth. After many vicissitudes, the railway was ceremonially opened between Plymouth and Truro on 2 May 1859. Meanwhile, further to the west, an entirely separate undertaking known as the West Cornwall Railway had been sanctioned with powers for the construction of a standard gauge railway between Truro and Penzance, which would incorporate parts of the earlier Hayle Railway. The WCR was completed in 1852, although there was no connection with the Cornwall Railway until 1859. Despite the 'break-of-gauge' at Truro, these two railways formed part of a through route between Paddington and Penzance and, as such, they were subsequently absorbed into the GWR system as part of the present-day West of England main line.

The Titanic and Her Sisters
In 1908, the White Star Line announced it was constructing a pair of sister ships at the Harland & Wolff yard in Belfast. The new behemoths would dwarf even the largest ships of the time, being fully one-third larger than any ship afloat. They would also be the most sumptuous vessels built to date, carrying their millionaire passengers in unsurpassed luxury. The two ships, Olympic and Titanic, were to be followed by a third sister, originally to be called Gigantic, but renamed as Britannic after the sinking of Titanic in April 1912. Janette and Campbell McCutcheon tell the story of the White Star trio using a fabulous collection of original postcards and photos of the three sisters, only one of which was ever to make a return voyage from New York. With the loss of Titanic in 1912, work was suspended on Britannic, but she was to sink on her sixth voyage as a hospital ship, during the First World War. Despite sinking a U-boat by ramming it, Olympic survived the war and was scrapped in Jarrow in 1935 after twenty-four years of service for White Star.
