Passengers cancelling their tickets for Titanic's maiden voyage out of apprehension; a famous social reformer who died on Titanic, warned in 1911 that he would be in danger from water in April 1912; inhabitants of the remote islands of Fiji aware of the sinking before reports of the collision reached the Pacific; a dying girl who, on 14 April 1912, 'sees' a big ship sinking in the water and mysteriously knows the name of the violinist in Titanic's orchestra. These are just a few of the numerous claims to psychic foreknowledge of the ship's sinking.Within days of the widely-publicised disaster of 1912, stories began circulating of extraordinary omens and individuals who supposedly had supernatural premonitions of the disaster. For years people had been telling Sam Payne to write a book about his adventures. My Life in Aviation, Taking Chances and Having Lots of Luck is his response. In "Taking Chances," he talks about starting to fly, going to Argentina, quitting helicopters and trying for the airlines, working overseas, and quitting TWA to work for Piedmont Airlines. In the "Lots of Luck" part, he tells about getting into the ROTC flight program, being sent to Korea, avoiding near mid-air collisions and engine failures and living through a hijacking. My Life in Aviation tells about all the places he's been, flying in formation with an Andes Condor, flying around the world four times, guarding the President of the United States, and lots of other interesting tales. Sam says flying was a great and fun way of making a living.Since retiring from U.S. Airways, he has been busy. He started playing golf, took up watercolor painting, and travels widely with his wife, Anna-Stina. They have been to all fifty states, have gone on several cruises and have traveled to Europe. Now they live in a great retirement community in West Windsor, NJ, very near where he grew up.

Other editions may not be.The International Rules in this book were formalized in the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972, and became effective on July 15, 1977. The Rules (commonly called 72 COLREGS) are part of the Convention, and vessels flying the flags of states ratifying the treaty are bound to the Rules. The United States has ratified this treaty and all United States flag vessels must adhere to these Rules where applicable. President Gerald R. Ford proclaimed 72 COLREGS and the Congress adopted them as the International Navigational Rules Act of 1977. The 72 COLREGS were developed by the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO) which in May 1982 was renamed the International Maritime Organization (IMO). In November 1981, IMO's Assembly adopted 55 amendments to the 72 COLREGS which became effective on June 16, 1983. The IMO also adopted 9 more amendments which became effective on June 29, 1989. A single amendment became effective March 19, 1991. In 1993 8 amendments were adopted by the IMO which entered into force in 1995. The IMO adopted 9 amendments which entered into force November 29, 2003. Lastly, a single amendment was adopted which updated the Distress signals and entered into force on December 1, 2009. The International Rules in this book contain these amendments. These Rules are applicable on waters outside of established navigational lines of demarcation. The lines are called COLREGS Demarcation Lines and delineate those waters upon which mariners shall comply with the Inland and International Rules. COLREGS Demarcation Lines are contained in this book.

The key aim of this volume is to demonstrate ways in which an understanding of history can be used to inform present-day transport and mobility policies. This is not to say that history repeats itself, or that every contemporary transport dilemma has an historical counterpart: rather, the contributors to this book argue that in many contexts of transport planning a better understanding of the context and consequences of past decisions and processes could lead to more effective policy decisions. Collectively the authors explore the ways in which the methods and approaches of historical research may be applied to contemporary transport and policy issues across a wide range of transport modes and contexts. Intermodal Freight Terminals
Much work has been done on port governance yet little has addressed intermodal terminal governance, despite the clear similarities. This book fills that gap by establishing a governance framework for situating analysis of intermodal terminals throughout their life cycle. A version of the product life cycle theory is amended with governance theory to produce a framework covering each stage of the terminal's life cycle, from the initial planning to the many decisions taken regarding the public/private split in funding mechanisms, ownership, selecting an operator, specifying KPIs to the operator, setting fees, earning profit, ensuring fair access to all rail service operators, and finally to reconcessioning the terminal to a new operator, managing the handover and maintaining the terminal throughout its life cycle. An institutional analysis of stakeholder relations, situated within a governance framework, illuminates these issues and enables not only conceptualisation and greater understanding of the geography of intermodal transport, but also decision-making and goal-setting by planners and policy makers. This book thus has three functions: first, as a textbook on the planning and operation of intermodal terminals; second, as a presentation of recent empirical research on intermodal terminal governance; third, as a framework for future research in which the broad field of analysis of intermodal transport can be viewed through a single lens and used to inform geographers, policymakers and planners.

Aircraft Wrecks of the Western States
The author, an aircraft wreckologist, together with several other like-minded friends, has investigated 30 crash sites in the Western States, both military and civilian, covering the period from World War II to the recent present. Together with hundreds of photos of the sites and wreckage found at them, the author records their findings as well as the story of the crash and any investigations into the incident. This is a follow-up volume to the three volumes the author produced for aircraft crash sites found in the Pacific Northwest. In contrast with the Pacific Northwest, aircraft wreck hunting in the deserts and mountains of Arizona, California, and Nevada is entirely different. With the absence of many trees, visibility and GPS reception is usually excellent. With a good set of binoculars one can spot gleaming pieces of wreckage in bright sunshine from many miles away. Weather is not usually too much of a factor although we have witnessed some ferocious thunderstorms and flash flooding which can be very dangerous. We also need to limit our hiking to early mornings or spring and fall months to avoid the intense heat of the summer. Normally crash sites are located miles out in the middle of nowhere in the southwestern deserts and accessed only by four-wheel-drive vehicles. Because of this, we bring at least two vehicles to have a backup in case if one breaks down. The vehicles are equipped with winches, shovels, and spare tires because getting stuck in sand is all too common. Before making trips out on the desert, our wreck hunting groups usually conduct meetings early in the mornings to make sure that everyone is accounted for and that we have plenty of survival supplies. This means that our backpacks are loaded with food and water, that we have cell phones and portable radios, and that we have several cases of extra drinking water. The vehicles are topped with gas, checked for tools and equipment, and tires are deflated to give better traction in sand. It is not uncommon to lose all cell phone coverage, so we test and make sure that each individual hiker has a functioning hand-held radio. We also bring along medical supplies onboard the vehicles and in the backpacks of each hiker. Without cell phone coverage we are unable to call for help and it is usually at least an hour drive out of the desert. We exercise caution and good judgment in knowing that help is going to be a long time coming. 535 mostly color and some B&W photos, bibliography.
