Bird Haven Farm

Janet,Mavec  著
2025/03/12 出版

A four-season photographic exploration of one of America's great contemporary private gardens. A fixture on The Garden Conservancy's Open Days tours, the historic 100-acre farm has been shepherded into the modern era and given a modern sensibility by the vision of its owner, Janet Mavec, also the book's author. Preserving and enhancing a property rich in narrative and natural beauty has been a twenty-year obsession for this property's owner. Mavec has called upon a host of well-known garden luminaries to help preserve what began as a farm with a solitary stone house originally owned by the publisher of the Nancy Drew mysteries while making it functional, productive, and beautiful for the twenty-first century. Today, a series of individual gardens rest within a natural hollow surrounded by native woodland, including a broad gathering space defined by whimsical cloud-pruned boxwood hedges, groves of lilacs, and dogwoods and hellebores that entice visitors into early-season walks with delicate color each spring, a stone-walled vegetable and flower garden whose geometry is inspired by medieval monasteries, winding perennial-lined paths, orchards that produce over five hundred pounds of apples each fall, a natural pond brimming with aquatic plants, and an elliptical hillside meadow farmed for hay. All lead intuitively back to the "town square," an open area tucked among the dwelling spaces featuring a broad ground-level fountain that clearly identifies it as the true heart of the farm. With plenty of inspiration and encouragement on what it means to steward land in an ecologically appropriate way while still fully enjoying its bounty, the volume also includes seasonal menus featuring ingredients grown on the farm or sourced locally. All is artistically documented by photographer Ngoc Minh Ngo in full-color photographs that draw the reader through every area of the garden and celebrate its scenic vistas as well as its loveliest small details.

Landscape of Civilisation - Moody Gardens

Acc Art Books 出版
2025/03/07 出版

The following is inscribed on page 308 of the author's copy of Bertrand Russell's A History of Western Philosophy: 'During this chapter decided to write a history of landscape architecture, at 10.05am Sunday 23rd May 1958', and 'completed at Taormina, Feb. 1975' Ten years later the idea of translating his great work The Landscape of Man into visible form was formulated at Seattle on the evening of 19 May 1985. The sketch plan, with little future deviation, was completed in time for breakfast the following morning. The Historical Gardens that this book describes are only part of a multi-million twenty year programme initiated by the Moody Foundation for the enrichment of Galveston, Texas - a city destroyed by inundation in 1900 and now materially recovered. The site of the gardens themselves is twenty-five acres of flat land adjoining sea marshes. This will be divided by artificial mountains into West and East. There will be fifteen cultures and the guide will take the visitor through them by water in a spectacular mile-long odyssey. First comes the western classical sequence, heralded by a succession of water trumpets: Eden, Egypt, Rome, Islam, the middle ages, 16th century Italy, 17th century France, 19th century England. Then follows a twisting tour through 18th century romantic Europe, through the awesome mountain within which lie the painted caves of universal pre-historic man. Thence through the three spheres of China: Taoism, Tao-Buddha, and pure Buddhism; and so home through Japan and primeval forest. The journey by water-bus should awaken visitors' interest to return on foot to study more closely what is in fact a cultural history of the world as seen in miniature through landscape. While it is essential that the interpretation of the spirit of history should be academically correct, this principal and, we hope, enchanting composition of cultures (elsewhere usually in opposition one to another in time, space and philosophy) is intended to be a single deeply suggestive work of surrealist art of our own time. Of the 200 black and white and 32 color illustrations, over 100 are fine detailed drawings and sketches by the author.

Bedrock

Jill,Nooney  著
2025/03/05 出版

"An engaging look at the creation of an extensive garden by two highly motivated gardeners that will appeal to readers who enjoy whimsy, innovation, and following the construction of a garden." -- Library Journal"Cultivation is just another word for commitment. You think you are just pulling weeds, but what you are really doing is writing a love letter to your patch of earth." - Thomas RainerThis quote opens Bedrock: The Making of a Public Garden, a book that is a love letter from a woman to the garden she spent 40 years creating. Jill Nooney, a psychotherapist and graduate of the Radcliffe Seminars Program in Landscape Design, and her husband Bob Munger, a physician, developed their 30 acres in Lee, New Hampshire into an unforgettable garden.Featuring more than 300 photographs of the garden and Jill's artful sculptures, water features, and built structures that provide places throughout Bedrock Garden from which to contemplate the complete landscape, the book takes us from the garden's origins as a private space to its present life as a public garden. The garden has slowly evolved through its creators' deep love for the land -- and an indominable urge to experiment.Rich with entertaining anecdotes of realizing improbable, visionary concepts that involved moving boulders, carrying trees and rocks on planes, ferreting out rare plant material, operating all manner of equipment, and managing thousands of visitors, this is a story of love, loss and generosity. The book takes the reader into a landscape that is green and wild, but also filled with a deep sense of peace. Just like visitors to the garden, readers will fall in love with Bedrock.

The Gardens of Mien Ruys

2025/03/03 出版

A celebration of 100 years of the Mien Ruys Gardens, where legendary designer Mien Ruys conducted her lifetime of experimentations and innovations that have deeply informed today's naturalistic gardening movement. Widely considered the Mother of the Modernist garden, Mien Ruys (1904-1999) is one of the most influential gardeners and landscape architects of the 20th Century. The Gardens of Mien Ruys is the first authorized book in English to discuss her life, influence, process, and designs, written by the head of the Mien Ruys Gardens who continues to steward Ruys's horticultural legacy. Part illustrated biography and part garden case study, this book is an important link to history that can help us put into context a future of gardening in line with nature, as informed by a strong, feminist leader. Ruys worked hard to break down the elitism of gardening, and was a woman far ahead of her time. She is known best for her use of small spaces, designing gardens without large lawns, and using materials like concrete, railroad ties, and exposed gravel long before they were in style. She was influential in bringing a modernist garden design into cities and public places where they could be enjoyed by all, rather than just behind the walls of the private estate. Ruys had an extensive knowledge of plants, especially perennials, and included in the book are some of her iconic planting plans. Also featured in the book are tips on how to design a small garden in the Ruys style, and a list of Mien's 100 favorite plants.

The New Romantic Garden

Jo,Thompson  著
2025/02/21 出版

From one of today's leading garden designers, known for her keen eye for colour and modern romanticism, comes a volume that reveals in thirty exquisitely planted gardens dozens of ideas on how to adapt traditional garden design elements for today's more ecologically based aesthetics. Over her thirty-year career, celebrated designer Jo Thompson has become recognised for her timeless planting, well-proportioned, English-style gardens rendered modern by a staunch commitment to biodiversity--to the eye this translates as a looser formality than English gardens of the past, though every bit as romantic. Thompson reminds us that we are never, in complete charge of how our gardens grow; other forces are always at work, as they should be when we allow sustainable practices to help us guide rather than try to dominate nature's own efforts. Hundreds of beautiful colour photos and chapter-by-chapter case studies of individual gardens designed around various themes provide inspiration for all gardeners who want their gardens to feel not merely well planted, but truly alive and atmospheric.

Derek Jarman's Garden

Derek,Jarman  著
2025/02/13 出版

From artist and activist Derek Jaman, a visual and narrative exploration of his singular, paradisiacal garden, set in a most inhospitable place. Derek Jarman, a passionate gardener from childhood, combined his painter's eye, horticultural expertise, and ecological convictions to produce a landscape that combined flints, shells, and driftwood to create a unique paradise. This book is Derek Jarman's own record of how this garden evolved, from its earliest beginnings in 1986 to 1994, the last year of his life. More than 150 photographs taken by his friend and photographer Howard Sooley capture the garden at all its different stages at every season. For both gardeners and admirers of this extraordinary man, this 30th anniversary edition, with a foreword by Jamaica Kincaid, marks three decades of the book as a gardening classic, and the ongoing impact of Jarman's transformative garden--proof of the garden space as one of ideas, philosophy, and myth--more than just a place of retreat.
