The Complete Hydraulic Ram Manual

Tom,Moates  著
Homestead Press 出版
2024/11/12 出版

The classic authoritative work on ram pumps, The Complete Hydraulic Ram Manual, is now back in print! Originally published in 2000, this book was widely available through the independent living magazines at the time and was the book that launched The Homestead Press. We are delighted to make available again this informative manual on how-to build your own ram pump from off the shelf plumbing fittings and other readily available parts. The original book blurb states: "Tom Moates is a well known author whose work has appeared in the US, Canada, and the UK in such magazines as Mother Earth News, Country Journal, Harrowsmith, and NewAge Journal. Much of this work promotes renewable energy resources and covers many user built technologies like solar panel trackers and electric conversion vehicles. The Complete Hydraulic Ram Manual is his answer to so many calls and letters with questions about the ram pump how-to article "Poetry in Motion" which ran in the 1996 April/May issue of Mother Earth News. He and Carol, his wife, built their off grid house on a 20 acre homestead in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. They produce their electricity with photovoltaics, pump their mountain spring water with the ram pump described in this book, and garden organically."

Gardening Mercies

2024/11/08 出版

It has been said that to love another person is to see the face of God. To see the hand of God, cultivate a garden. Gardens are places where we are up close and personal to God's daily miracles of creation, death, and rebirth--life itself. Indeed, the act of gardening can be a deeply personal experience in spritual growth. But life, like gardening, is sometimes messy, dirty and hard. Digging into the struggles and joys we face daily, such as discerning God's will, coping with crushed hopes, and learning to love, Gardening Mercies provides inspiration and instruction for the seasons of our lives. Discover how God is working in you, despite your past mistakes. Grow a deeper reverence for and friendship with God. Start the process of healing from painful moments in your life. "Well done! Lovely!" - Jan Karon, bestselling Mitford series author "Beautiful new book!...truly creative approach." - Liz Curtis Higgs, popular speaker and author "From a reader who has bookshelves filled with devotionals, I have to say that Gardening Mercies is one of my favorites." - Tricia Goyer, best-selling author of more than 50 books "I love it! I love all the sweet thoughts in it!" - Dolly Parton, songwriter and entertainer Gardening can be hard work. Growth takes time and effort. But as all gardeners know, the results are beautiful to see, smell, and touch. The same is true as we grow and become new creatures in Christ, and yet the results are even more beautiful--eternal fruit.

Gardening in Nigeria

2024/11/08 出版

Gardening in Nigeria is probably the only text on the subject in the country. Written from first-hand experience of plants in his garden, the author, describes the characteristics, requirements and care of approximately two hundred plants. Each plant discussed is accompanied by its photograph, with a caption giving the common names in Nigeria and the Latin names. Even though titled Gardening in Nigeria, it is a book that would be found relevant to most tropical regions of the world where weather conditions and flora are similar to those in Nigeria and a reference book for the beginner and the experienced gardener.

Planting Fields

Gina,Wouters  著
Monacelli Press 出版
2024/11/03 出版

A celebration of Planting Fields, one of the few surviving estates of the Gold Coast of Long Island in New YorkPlanting Fields is an English Country House transported to the North Shore of Long Island, about 48 kilometres/30 miles east of Manhattan. Once home to William R. Coe, chairman of Johnson & Higgins, and his wife, Mai, an heir to the Standard Oil fortune, this lavish Tudor-revival mansion sits on a 400-acre landscape of rolling lawns, formal gardens, and woodlands. Now open to the public as a New York State Historic Park, Planting Fields is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and its lawns and gardens draw more than 250,000 visitors annually, hosting both informal gatherings and celebrations. This new book tells the story of Planting Fields through stunning new photography by David Almeida, historic images, and sketches and plans by the Olmsted Brothers which capture the spirit of this rare survivor of the Country Place Era. A compelling introduction by noted historian Witold Rybczynski explores the designers who shaped it and the families who lived there, and additional essays examine the history of the site and the displacement of indigenous peoples in addition to outlining the future plan for sustainability and resilience in restoring the landscape.

Cider Apples

C,Thornton  著
2024/10/28 出版

CIDER APPLES (Rare and Heritage Fruit Cultivars #2) Cider is a traditional alcoholic beverage made by the fermentation of juice from specific apples. It can be brewed at home. This pleasant - and reputedly health-giving - drink has a long history. It is reported that when the Romans arrived in England in 55 BC, they found the local Kentish villagers drinking a delicious cider-like beverage made from apples. It is unknown how long the English locals had been making this apple drink prior to the arrival of the Romans. Cider apples are cultivars selected for characteristics that make high quality cider. Early settlers sailed to new lands bringing these special fruits, thus distributing them across the globe. Some of these unique, historic cultivars have survived through the years and been rediscovered by enthusiastic brewers. We list some of them here, along with what is known of their history, description, flavour characteristics and a few sources for trees. This book is one of a series written for 'backyard farmers' of the 21st century. The series focuses on rare and heritage fruit in Australia, although it includes much information of interest to fruit enthusiasts around the world. 'Heritage' or 'heirloom' fruits such as old-fashioned varieties of apple, quince, fig, plum, peach and pear are increasingly popular due to their diverse flavours, excellent nutritional qualities and other desirable characteristics. They are part of our horticultural, vintage and culinary inheritance. To pick a tree-ripened heritage fruit from your own back yard and bite into it is to experience the taste of fresh food as our forefathers knew it. During the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries fruit diversity was huge, but in modern supermarkets only a limited range of commercial fruit varieties is now available to consumers. Heritage, heirloom and rare fruit enthusiasts across the world are currently reviving our horticultural legacy by renovating old orchards and identifying 'lost', unusual and historic fruit varieties. The goal is to make a much wider range of fruit trees available again to the home gardener. This series of handbooks aims to help.

Topics of Special Interest to Me

2024/10/10 出版

In my first two books, I covered some pretty serious topics. I would now like to change the tone to some more lighthearted topics that are of special interest to me.I speak to people, and they say, "I have a black thumb. I cannot grow anything!" Or "I can't cook, I burn everything!" I would like to share a few things that I have learned over the years that have helped me become what I would like to believe is a fairly decent cook. When I take some of my dishes to gatherings of friends (particularly our small group meetings or Deacons' meetings), I get high marks. One of the guys in my small group says, "I don't worry about what you are bringing, Eldon. It is always good."I have also learned things about gardening over the years that have helped me change from a "plant it and trash it" gardener to a guy who can produce my favorite summer treat, fresh tomatoes!I rarely buy tomatoes in the store because they have no flavor. Commercially produced tomatoes are bulk harvested while they are still green and gassed with ethylene to turn them red. They refer to this as ripening, but it merely turns them red.Commercial tomatoes cannot match fresh grown tomatoes because, in the extra time the fruit hangs on the vine, it develops sugars from the sun ripening them which commercial tomatoes do not get. I hope that you enjoy these topics of special interest to me.

Make Cider without Fuss or Chemicals

Independentl 出版
2024/09/21 出版

Plans and operating instructions to make a domestic cider press and make cider. Have you ever had a surplus of apples, either from your own garden, or apples offered by a friend or neighbour during the Autumn glut? There is a limit to the number of apples you can keep in your garage before they start to rot and end up on the compost heap. Yet most varieties of apple can be used to make delicious fresh juice, or fermented to make real cider: quite different from most of the ciders sold in pubs and supermarkets. These so-called ciders are often made from fruit concentrates with added water, alcohol, flavouring, artificial sweeteners and fruit acids, chemical preservatives and sometimes with only a fraction of fermented apple juice. Real cider should be made only from fresh apple juice, with nothing added: no yeast, sugar, water, flavouring, sulphites, other preservatives such as citric acid, ascorbic acid, or anything else. This booklet gives a concise and easy to follow method for pressing your apples and making your own cider, or just preserving the juice as a delicious healthy non-alcoholic drink. It includes some valuable tips on the preparation and storage of apple juice and cider. Part 2 gives a detailed description with diagrams and photographs for the construction and operation of a high yielding apple press suitable for use in a garage or small outhouse. The author has over 18 years experience in the production of cider from trees in his own garden and has won prizes for his cider in local shows in Somerset.(c) Joe Bleasdalev1 July 2017

The Modern Garden

2024/09/20 出版

Visionary landscape architecture and garden design at mid-century in North America is captured by the greats of the era, including Julius Shulman and Ezra Stoller in many previously unpublished photographs. The treasures of mid-century American architecture have long been celebrated. Less appreciated has been the landscape design that provides the framing for these masterworks. But more than frame, landscape architecture is an art worthy of the spotlight, particularly at mid-century, when the notion that "gardens are outdoor spaces for people to live in" was championed and brought to the fore; now gardens and landscapes are not just external attributes to the house but a continuation of it and its living spaces in a relationship of symbiosis, with its pools and terraces, its winding lawns, and its partly enclosed room-like spaces flanked by brick or stone or plantings in a range of colors and forms. Approximately seventy-five mostly residential projects are thoroughly documented and recounted. Landscape architects whose work is featured include Thomas Church, Lawrence Halprin, and Garrett Eckbo, among others. Highlights include the dramatic surrounds of Richard Neutra's Perkins House in its Pasadena hillside setting and Frank Lloyd Wright's Marin County Civic Center, where environment and building comingle in an extraordinary modernist vision of the future made real. This book is both a wishful gesture toward a realignment of building with nature and a must-have for anyone with a visceral appreciation for a designed environment understood as an integrated whole. Ultimately, the book underlines the fundamental importance of gardens and landscape design, intended in the widest possible sense, for the quality of living of all individuals.
