The World of Atelier Vime
Using natural materials--wicker, osier, rattan, rope--to create exquisite handwoven decorative objects, French lifestyle brand Atelier Vime has redefined luxury. When Atelier Vime's cofounders discovered that their eighteenth-century h繫tel particulier had previously been a basket-weaving workshop, they dedicated themselves to reviving the vanishing artisanal craft. They replanted willow shrubs, hired local artisans, and designed a contemporary collection of decorative objects with their associate Rapha禱lle Hanley. Karl Lagerfeld was an early admirer and, according to Architectural Digest, Atelier Vime swiftly became "the industry secret for designers." Today, customers around the world--from private homeowners to notable designers including Pierre Yovanovich, Kelly Wearstler, Aerin Lauder, Jake Arnold, Virginia Tupker, and Beata Heuman--flock to La Maison Vime at Vallabr癡gues in Provence to source Vime's unique home furnishings that are handmade in France. The duo behind Atelier Vime invites readers to discover their idyllic universe in their homes across France, where their unusual color palettes--from periwinkle blue to burnished ocher--offer a striking backdrop for their Medici column vase, woven screens, rope lamps, and rattan furniture. Their personal collections include classical and modern art, antique textiles, Proven癟al ceramics, and miniature baskets, which are combined with their contemporary creations to form the signature Vime style. Bringing the ancestral savoir faire of basketry into the twenty-first century, using materials and methods that are as sustainable as they are sumptuous, Atelier Vime celebrates an impeccable lifestyle rooted in the synergic relationship between luxurious design and nature.

Housing Security
I believe that housing is a human right. In the United States, a very wealthy country, there is no excuse for homelessness. Section 8 of the Housing Act that established public housing was revised in 1974 to create an important new program. The revised Section 8 program provided federal funds to help households afford the rent in existing housing. The program also gave developers assistance to create new or renovated affordable housing. I was an advocate for the program when it was enacted in 1974, and I proposed a successful amendment allowing large families to pay only 15 percent of income for rent. The book includes a brief history of earlier housing programs. Then I discuss President Nixon's housing moratorium and the study that led to Section 8. I have a chapter about Carla A. Hills, President Ford's housing Secretary, who was very effective and productive.A case study shows how Section 8 helped performing artists, leading to the revival of Times Square in Manhattan. In other chapters, I analyze costs and the budget and discuss President Reagan's unfortunate programmatic changes. I include brief interviews with seven Section 8 tenants from New York, Washington State, and Florida. The final chapter is a summary of my recommendations for expanding and improving the current program.

The Slow Down offers readers an inside look at how Leanne found her "wow does this need work" dream house and then moved (with her family in tow) across the country to turn it into a welcoming home. Her story has a rebellious soul that is refreshingly different from other interior design books: She encourages readers to slow down in their personal environments and celebrate the beauty of everyday moments. You will come away with a new perspective and new ideas on how to make your home more joyful, elevated, and funky, fun, and just right.
