Later, we encounter many propositions and theorems concerning a wide variety of subjects; these represent the sum of Galileo's progress in understanding gravity, motion, resistance, acceleration, velocity, and the behavior of material structures. The 'Two New Sciences' referred to by the title are the nature of materials, and the motion of objects. A total of 130 illustrations and charts populate this text; for the most part, they are situated adjacent to their respective proposition or theorem. In many of the more complex explanations, they are important in aiding the reader to grasp what Galileo means. Through absorbing these wide-ranging investigations, we may appreciate the justness of Galileo's moniker: "The father of modern physics."This edition's translation to English is by Alfonso de Salvio and Henry Crew. The former was an expert on the technical aspects of the Italian language, while the latter was a longstanding scholar of physics with much experience teaching in the field.

The Globalization of Wheat
In The Globalization of Wheat, Marci R. Baranski explores Norman Borlaug's complicated legacy as godfather of the Green Revolution. Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for his role in fighting global hunger, Borlaug, an American agricultural scientist and plant breeder who worked for the Rockefeller Foundation, left a legacy that divides opinions even today. Adler's Individual Psychology and Related Methods
Adler, Alfred - the psychiatrist whose influential system of individual psychology introduced the term inferiority feeling/complex. He developed a flexible, supportive psychotherapy to direct those emotionally disabled by inferiority feelings toward maturity, common sense, and social usefulness. Adler maintained a strong awareness of social problems, and this served as a principal motivation in his work. From his earliest years as a physician he stressed consideration of the patient in relation to his total environment, and he began developing a humanistic, holistic approach to human problems. Adler explored psychopathology within the context of general medicine and in 1902 became associated with Sigmund Freud. Gradually, differences between the two became irreconcilable, notably after the appearance of Adler's Study of Organ Inferiority and Its Psychical Compensation, in which he suggested that persons try to compensate psychologically for a physical disability and its attendant feeling of inferiority.

This is the first book to present a carefully chosen and annotated selection of the unpublished writings and correspondence of the English logician John Venn (1834-1923). Today remembered mainly as the inventor of the famous diagram that bears his name, Venn was an important figure of nineteenth-century Cambridge, where he worked alongside leading thinkers, such as Henry Sidgwick and Alfred Marshall, on the development of the Moral Sciences Tripos. Venn published three influential textbooks on logic, contributed some dozen articles to the then newly-established journal Mind, of which he became co-editor in 1892, and counted F.W. Maitland, William Cunningham and Arthur Balfour among his pupils. After his active career as a logician, which ended around the turn of the 20th century, Venn reinvented himself as a biographer of his University, College and family. Together with his son, he worked on the massive Alumni Cantabrigienses, which is still usedtoday as a standard reference source. The material presented here, including the 100-page Annals: Autobiographical Sketch, provides much new information on Venn's philosophical development and Cambridge in the 1850s-60s. When the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain was founded in 1841, its founders considered pharmacy to be a branch of medicine. However, the 1852 Pharmacy Act made the exclusion of pharmacists from the medical profession inevitable, and in 1864 the General Medical Council decided that pharmacy legislation was best left to pharmacists themselves. Yet across the Empire, pharmacy struggled to establish itself as an autonomous profession, with doctors in many colonies reluctant to surrender control over pharmacy. In this book the author traces the professionalization of pharmacy by exploring issues including collective action by pharmacists, the role of the state, the passage of legislation, the extension of education, and its separation from medicine. The North American Perching and Dabbling Ducks
This volume updates and expands a portion of P. A. Johnsgard's 1975 Waterfowl of North America. It includes two species of the perching duck tribe Cairinini: the muscovy duck and the wood duck, which forage on the water surface but perch in trees and nest in elevated tree cavities. It also includes the dabbling, or surface-feeding, duck tribe Anatini, that forage on the water surface but nest on the ground. The species that breed in North America include the familiar mallards, wigeons, pintails, and teal. Descriptive accounts of the distributions, populations, ecologies, social-sexual behaviors, and breeding biology of all these species are provided. Five additional Eurasian and West Indian species that have been reported in North America have also been included with more abbreviated accounts. The updated bibliography contains more than 1,000 references. There are 12 maps, 31 drawings, 28 photos, and 58 anatomical or behavioral sketches.
Global Warming and Population Responses among Great Plains Birds
This book summarizes the evidence from 47 years (1967-2014) of Audubon Christmas Bird Counts and finds that bird populations and winter ranges have changed for many species in the Great Plains states (the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and the Texas panhandle). The book offers quantitative descriptions of the winter abundance for 147 of the most commonly encountered regional species, illustrating their changes in geographic distributions and relative abundance between 1967 and 2014. As winters have become progressively warmer, the winter distributions of many birds have moved northward, by as much as two states for some species. Birds are responding to milder temperatures and longer periods of ice-free water and snow-free foraging sites in the Great Plains, and the shifts in their distribution provide critical indicators of the acceleration of global warming.
The Birds of Nebraska
This annotated list of the birds of Nebraska has been updated to conform with the most recent (2017) major revision of the American Ornithologists' Society's Checklist of North American Birds (Chesser et al., 2017) and modified to conform to the most recent "Official List of the Birds of Nebraska" by the Nebraska Ornithologists' Union-461 species as of 2017. I have classified 368 species of Nebraska birds as ranging in relative frequency of occurrence as "abundant" to "rare." There are also 61 species considered to be of "accidental" occurrence, having been reliably reported in Nebraska no more than five times, 20 that are considered "extremely rare" or "very rare," if reported from six to 25 times. There are also three extinct, four extirpated, and five unsuccessfully introduced species. Thirteen hypothetical species of dubious origin or identification are mentioned parenthetically. The text includes more than 123,000 words, nearly 200 references, and 19 pages of drawings and maps.
Rocky Mountain Birds

Swans
The seven species of swans are an easily and universally recognized group of waterfowl, which have historically played important roles in the folklore, myths and legends in many cultures. Among the largest of all flying birds, they have been used as symbols of royalty, grace and beauty, and largely for these reasons swans have only rarely been considered acceptable as targets for sport hunting. Swans occur on all continents but Africa, though most species are found in the temperate and arctic zones of North America and Eurasia. Swans are a long-lived species and are among the most strongly monogamous of birds, having prolonged pair and family bonds that influence their flocking and social behavior, and contribute to the overall high degree of human interest in them. Fortunately, I live only a short jog from McDowell in my condominium home in Naperville, Illinois, not far from Chicago, our nation's third largest city. In combination of exercise and seeking out solitude and photo opportunities, I have spent several years doing pilgrimages through McDowell Woods. My adventures and discoveries, along with photographs of her wildlife, wildflowers, autumn colors, and forest and prairie landscapes, and a brief human history are all combined in the book Jogging McDowell: Discovering Chicagoland Wilderness. The Power of the Periphery
What is the source of Norway's culture of environmental harmony in our troubled world? Exploring the role of Norwegian scholar-activists of the late twentieth century, Peder Anker examines how they portrayed their country as a place of environmental stability in a world filled with tension. In contrast with societies dirtied by the hot and cold wars of the twentieth century, Norway's power, they argued, lay in the pristine, ideal natural environment of the periphery. Globally, a beautiful Norway came to be contrasted with a polluted world and fashioned as an ecological microcosm for the creation of a better global macrocosm. In this innovative, interdisciplinary history, Anker explores the ways in which ecological concerns were imported via Rachel Carson's Silent Spring in 1962, then to be exported from Norway back to the world at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992.
