New Science Theory and On The Magnet
The first book is basically the New-Science-Theory.com site as on 1 January 2018, for changes since then visit the website with its Sitemap noting updates. It is especially good for those interested in physics theory, concentrating chiefly on the four great physicists William Gilbert, Rene Descartes, Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein - and also having fine sections on Galileo, Kepler, History of Science, Gravity, Light, String Theory, Standard Model Physics, Probability Science, Philosophy of Science and General Image Theory Science. The second book is a new improved English translation of William Gilbert's banned Latin 1600 'De Magnete' or 'On The Magnet'. This is rather easier to read than its two earlier translations, and significantly helps to clarify Gilbert's 'attraction' physics which Newton put as one of the two mathematized physics options and which he is believed to have privately favoured. It is basically a novel signal-response or remote-control physics that may still have relevance.
The Man Who Was in Two Places at Once
This is a book about Padre Pio, one of the most extraordinary personalities of the modern era. Literally extra-ordinary! Padre Pio was best known for bearing the stigmata, the wounds of the crucified Christ, for fifty years. But the stigmata made up just one dimension of his witness to the world. He was known also for: -being in two places at the same time-speaking with clarity and accuracy of future events-interacting with those in the next world-combatting the forces of evil that ceaselessly attacked him-serving as an instrument of inexplicable healing for the sick-reading the minds of those who came to him-manifesting his presence through manifold fragrancesPadre Pio never asked for any of this, least of all the painful stigmata. But, as he always emphasized, they were all gifts of God bestowed solely for salvation and sanctification. He sought only to be obedient. Here we consider the world of Padre Pio against the backdrop of modern science and thought.
A State of Angst
Consciousness... What exactly is consciousness? It is a query that bewildered scientists since the age of experimentation and rationalization. Although the query is yet to be answered, the ongoing change in the state of our society may give us a glimpse on an insight regarding the query of consciousness. From wars, brothers in arms, calculated crimes, rape, mockery, selfishness and many other of our defining features, are we "ill" or are we "robust"?
Karachis Public Transport: Origins, Evolution, and Future Planning
Transport is a key driver of socioeconomic development, as it allows people to access jobs, markets, social interaction, education, and other services. Thus, enabling people to rise out of poverty and overcome social exclusion. Transport facilitates economic development by adding value to goods brought to markets and linking rural areas to cities and global supply chains. Karachi--the largest city in Pakistan and the twelfth-largest city in the world and Pakistan's premier industrial and financial centre--has a major transport crisis. At independence in 1947 it had a fairly efficient public transport system. Since then, the State has made enormous investments to address its transport needs. Different models of public, private, and public-private partnerships were developed and implemented along with a railway system. Many of these initiatives met with considerable success to begin with, but ultimately fizzled out. This book describes the pre-independence situation and subsequent initiatives while analysing the political, social, technical, and financial reasons for their failures and successes as well as the role of international financial institutions, and the judiciary. It also looks at the innovative responses of the informal private sector to the crisis, the pros and cons of present-day government planning, and the interests of various stakeholders in the transport drama that exists today.
Multispecies Storytelling in Intermedial Practices
Multispecies Storytelling in Intermedial Practices is a speculative endeavor asking how we may represent, relay, and read worlds differently by seeing other species as protagonists in their own rights. What other stories are to be invented and told from within those many-tongued chatters of multispecies collectives? Could such stories teach us how to become human otherwise?Often, the human is defined as the sole creature who holds language, and consequently is capable of articulating, representing, and reflecting upon the world. And yet, the world is made and remade by ongoing and many-tongued conversations between various organisms reverberating with sound, movement, gestures, hormones, and electrical signals. Everywhere, life is making itself known, heard, and understood in a wide variety of media and modalities. Some of these registers are available to our human senses, while some are not.Facing a not-so-distant future catastrophe, which in many ways and for many of us is already here, it is becoming painstakingly clear that our imaginaries are in dire need of corrections and replacements. How do we cultivate and share other kinds of stories and visions of the world that may hold promises of modest, yet radical hope? If we keep reproducing the same kind of languages, the same kinds of scientific gatekeeping, the same kinds of stories about "our" place in nature, we remain numb in the face of collapse.Multispecies Storytelling in Intermedial Practices offers steps toward a (self)critical multispecies philosophy which interrogates and qualifies the broad and seemingly neutral concept of humanity utilized in and around conversations grounded within Western science and academia. Artists, activists, writers, and scientists give a myriad of different interpretations of how to tell our worlds using different media - and possibly gives hints as to how to change it, too.

The dreadful night I recall
Life is not just a Journey, but a path full of adventurous experiences and intense feelings. Another words life is a zigzag way sometimes it is found the tears and sometimes found the smiles and it is called a life, no things are permanent. Your birth and death occurs in a cyclic process, no self-will works and it is strange still now: how do people die and after the death where the chapel to reach his/her soul? Your birth time-period decreases wherever your death time period increases less by less on the entire life cycle of the life and it is everyone's blueprints on the palm of the hands. I have a platonic love towards this book. it is written by this treasure in a poetry form when he faces some intractable problems in his life where no one may help to him, who always think about the values of life and dear and near who give a placid life. Once it so happened, sitting on a park, asked a simple question to him. This was a beautiful park with green creatures, Jagannath... I saw all and I also saw your happiness under your kind heart.... "But if this park is JURASSIC PARK, then what will you be doing" He replied "my body may move here in fear, but my soul will remain unchanged from enjoying the beauty of park"....I found only jokes on his comic remarks. But later I understood his short remarks show me about his personality.
Me & My Conditions
Got a "tummy-ache?" Feeling a bit "under the weather?" I'll trade you one of my "conditions" for your lone ailment. I've watched the television commercials and learned how "devastating" a "Touch of Diabetes" can be to a family. I can certainly relate to that - after 33,603 personal insulin injections. I can (also) empathize with ESRD (End Stage Renal Disease - got that), CHF (Congestive Heart Failure - almost killed me this year); Carotid Artery Blockage (Moderate on one side); Aortic Stenosis - that one runs in the family; Colon - you name it, I got it - problems; and don't forget the lung diseases, I particularly enjoy gasping for breath. (This is just a summation.) Yet, here I am, banging out a book detailing the (physical) answers to "What's wrong with you?"

The Great Centennial
The Great CentennialThe Great Centennial is about a time of discovery and rediscovery. It is about a time of leaving behind a civilized life; the stress and pettiness of urban crowds, neighbor cheating neighbor, and all its lies and hypocrisy to a life back in time-a time of great beauty, simplicity, sweet harmony, and unity, with man and beast alike. On August 25, 2016, we celebrated one hundred years of the administration and stewardship of our great national parks, established in the immortal words of our twenty-sixth US president Theodore Roosevelt, "for the benefit and enjoyment of the people."The Great Centennial continues our celebration for the next one hundred years, and beyond, and for generations yet unborn. This photo-documentary book takes us on a journalistic and literary tour through time and space: through natural and human history, poetry, song, discovery, and rediscovery featuring such national parks as Glacier, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Shenandoah, and Theodore Roosevelt. Also featured is a Montana state park, and national historic landmark, where the Missouri River begins at the convergence of the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin Rivers, in a wilderness all her own. Also featured are conservation heroes like George Bird Grinnell, John Muir, Stuart Udall, and author Terry Tempest Williams. Majestic grizzlies, great buffalo herds, prairie dog cities, and jousting bighorn rams are among the wildlife standouts. From mountain skylines to vast rolling prairies to dense primeval forests to a canyon so grand as to be a world all her own, our national parks, and overall wilderness heritage, are God's blessing and America's cornerstone. In The Great Centennial is great healing and tranquility for one and all. Les MacLean Author of The Great Centennial
Richard Congreve, Positivist Politics, the Victorian Press, and the British Empire
This book is about the life and times of Richard Congreve. This polemicist was the first thinker to gain instant infamy for publishing cogent critiques of imperialism in Victorian Britain. As the foremost British acolyte of Auguste Comte, Congreve sought to employ the philosopher's new science of sociology to dismantle the British Empire. With an aim to realise in its place Comte's global vision of utopian socialist republican city-states, the former Oxford don and ex-Anglican minister launched his Church of Humanity in 1859. Over the next forty years, Congreve engaged in some of the most pressing foreign and domestic controversies of his day, despite facing fierce personal attacks in the Victorian press. Congreve made overlooked contributions to the history of science, political economy, and secular ethics. In this book Matthew Wilson argues that Congreve's polemics, 'in the name of Humanity', served as the devotional practices of his Positivist church.
Historical Explorations of Modern Epidemiology
This volume explores the history of epidemiology from the mid-twentieth century to the present. Epidemiology has exerted major influence on the way that both infectious and chronic diseases are conceptualized and controlled, and, more generally, on the way that people in modern societies think about health, behavior, longevity, and risk. This collection consists of a series of in-depth analyses of the roots, development, and impact of epidemiological research, illuminating the complex relationship between medical research and data on the one hand, and social and cultural factors on the other. The thematical and geographical scope of the book ranges from indigenous and participant perspectives to the visualization of pandemics, and from Circumpolar North to East Africa. The book identifies significant historical changes and the driving forces behind them, charting forms of science-society interaction that characterize modern epidemiology. Chapter 1 and chapter 4 are available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.

Principles of Energy Efficient House Design. The Comparison of Two Dwelling Concepts
Academic Paper from the year 2005 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: 2, language: English, abstract: This report compares the thermal performances of two dwellings, type A and type B, in calculating the heat loss parameter of each dwelling. In times of climate change and scarcity of resources, the importance of energy efficient building design has increased significantly and costumers demand new solution to get independent of rising fuel prices and to save energy. Therefore, energy efficient design has to comprise more than just insulation of the envelope of dwellings. Whilst the insulation still is one of the most important mean to stop the heat loss of the fabric, the concepts of heating, lighting and internal appliances have gained a great importance in energy efficient design.
Renewable Energy in Practice. The Ashton Green Community Concept
Academic Paper from the year 2006 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: 2, language: English, abstract: In this report, the options of the project by the Ashton Green community, that aims at an integrated and sustainable energy service approach, are introduced and evaluated. Being on the global agenda, CO2 reduction influences a vast amount of policy areas. Brought down to national and local levels renewable energies have great potentials to reduce carbon emissions. An example of a renewable energy approach is the Ashton Green Project in Leicester, UK. While planning a sustainable community the energy demand is planned to be met entirely by renewable energy generation.

The Perfection of Nature
A deep history of how Renaissance Italy and the Spanish empire were shaped by a lingering fascination with breeding. The Renaissance is celebrated for the belief that individuals could fashion themselves to greatness, but there is a dark undercurrent to this f礙ted era of history. The same men and women who offered profound advancements in European understanding of the human condition-and laid the foundations of the Scientific Revolution-were also obsessed with controlling that condition and the wider natural world. Tracing early modern artisanal practice, Mackenzie Cooley shows how the idea of race and theories of inheritance developed through animal breeding in the shadow of the Spanish Empire. While one strand of the Renaissance celebrated a liberal view of human potential, another limited it by biology, reducing man to beast and prince to stud. "Race," Cooley explains, first referred to animal stock honed through breeding. To those who invented the concept, race was not inflexible, but the fragile result of reproductive work. As the Spanish empire expanded, the concept of race moved from nonhuman to human animals. Cooley reveals how, as the dangerous idea of controlled reproduction was brought to life again and again, a rich, complex, and ever-shifting language of race and breeding was born. Adding nuance and historical context to discussions of race and human and animal relations, The Perfection of Nature provides a close reading of undertheorized notions of generation and its discontents in the more-than-human world.
Fueling Mexico
Around the 1830s, parts of Mexico began industrializing using water and wood. By the 1880s, this model faced a growing energy and ecological bottleneck. By the 1950s, fossil fuels powered most of Mexico's economy and society. Looking to the north and across the Atlantic, late nineteenth-century officials and elites concluded that fossil fuels would solve Mexico's energy problem and Mexican industry began introducing coal. But limited domestic deposits and high costs meant that coal never became king in Mexico. Oil instead became the favored fuel for manufacture, transport, and electricity generation. This shift, however, created a paradox of perennial scarcity amidst energy abundance: every new influx of fossil energy led to increased demand. Germ獺n Vergara shows how the decision to power the country's economy with fossil fuels locked Mexico in a cycle of endless, fossil-fueled growth - with serious environmental and social consequences.

Turkey Tails and Tales from Across the USA
This is the third book in a series of turkey hunting recollections written by Tom "Doc" Weddle in which he chronologically details a life well-spent as one of America's most fervent "Turkey Men." Few people can boast of having accomplished what's known as a U.S. Super Slam...the taking of a wild turkey from all 49 states which support a spring hunting season. Weddle has three of these to his credit, and is almost finished with numbers four and five! This book covers the years 2001-2006, when he finished the first of those major undertakings, but don't look for this humble man to brag about what he's done. That's not Doc's style, and that's not who he is. This man is quite simply a turkey hunter to the center of his very soul, and this book is filled with stories which others so-afflicted can relate to and enjoy. It was 40 years ago when the author first heard the gobble of a wild turkey, and he freely admits to not being the same, since. Ordinary people can regulate how much time they spend hunting. Not Doc. The man leaves home in early March, and doesn't come back until June. During this timeframe he'll hunt in 10-12 states on average, but prides himself above any other accomplishment on how many mornings he gets to spend in pursuit of unheard gobbles coming from as-yet unexplored lands. Nearly all of these exploits occur on public ground, which only makes sense, because Weddle is as blue-collar as it gets. Not only does he enjoy rubbing elbows with the masses on properties that are open to everyone else, but he thrives on it. Doc's books take the reader along for the ride.

The Experimental Fire
A 400-year history of the development of alchemy in England that brings to light the evolution of the practice. In medieval and early modern Europe, the practice of alchemy promised extraordinary physical transformations. Who would not be amazed to see base metals turned into silver and gold, hard iron into soft water, and deadly poison into elixirs that could heal the human body? To defend such claims, alchemists turned to the past, scouring ancient books for evidence of a lost alchemical heritage and seeking to translate their secret language and obscure imagery into replicable, practical effects. Tracing the development of alchemy in England over four hundred years, from the beginning of the fourteenth century to the end of the seventeenth, Jennifer M. Rampling illuminates the role of alchemical reading and experimental practice in the broader context of national and scientific history. Using new manuscript sources, she shows how practitioners like George Ripley, John Dee, and Edward Kelley, as well as many previously unknown alchemists, devised new practical approaches to alchemy while seeking the support of English monarchs. By reconstructing their alchemical ideas, practices, and disputes, Rampling reveals how English alchemy was continually reinvented over the space of four centuries, resulting in changes to the science itself. In so doing, The Experimental Fire bridges the intellectual history of chemistry and the wider worlds of early modern patronage, medicine, and science.

The Man in the Monkeynut Coat
Sir Isaac Newton once declared that his momentous discoveries were only made thanks to having 'stood on the shoulders of giants'. The same might also be said of the scientists James Watson and Francis Crick. Their discovery of the structure of DNA was, without doubt, one of the biggest scientific landmarks in history and, thanks largely to the success of Watson's best-selling memoir 'The Double Helix', there might seem to be little new to say about this story. But much remains to be said about the particular 'giants' on whose shoulders Watson and Crick stood. Of these, the crystallographer Rosalind Franklin, whose famous X-ray diffraction photograph known as 'Photo 51' provided Watson and Crick with a vital clue, is now well recognised. Far less well known is the physicist William T. Astbury who, working at Leeds in the 1930s on the structure of wool for the local textile industry, pioneered the use of X-ray crystallography to study biological fibres. In so doing, he not only made the very first studies of the structure of DNA culminating in a photo almost identical to Franklin's 'Photo 51', but also founded the new science of 'molecular biology'. Yet whilst Watson and Crick won the Nobel Prize, Astbury has largely been forgotten. The Man in the Monkeynut Coat tells the story of this neglected pioneer, showing not only how it was thanks to him that Watson and Crick were not left empty-handed, but also how his ideas transformed biology leaving a legacy which is still felt today.
Poetry for Wild Spirits
A Bandrui... a Druid Bard, my life and calling comes through the inspiration I find in the Wild Spirits of nature and through the practise of animism. As the wheel of the year and seasons turn through their natural cycles and, when as humans, we fall off that wheel, we lose touch with the magick that dwells in all things and in all sentient life, including our own.Seasons don't move in a straight line, they are fluid and circular, leading one into another, seamlessly. Only humankind see their lives as straight lines, from birth to death and yet, so many times we change our mind, deviate from the original plan, cycling back to another starting point or rush to the end of something before it's truly begun. We wear ourselves out with this concept of time. Look around in nature... there are no straight lines and no clocks.Animism is the practise of seeing all life as sentient and animate, each with its own character and spirit... no two the same, for no two humans are either. Each creature... each leaf, stem, flower, pod, bark and individual species are not the same but unique... all are one.So in my world the first step is to connect to, 'Genius Loci' the Spirit of Place and to call on this deep, earth energy for communication, experiences within the realms of nature and a continued growth in understanding how this realm of vast energy works, i.e. the seasonal changes and cycles as they unfold, all apparently without 'instruction, ' rather through a seeming, 'rightness' of moment, an intuitive knowing, for if all life is sentient, animate, then there is an underlying knowing as to when the first buds appear, the first bird sings, the first creature emerges from it's winter burrow. This little volume expresses the wonderful energies that live and play in nature... Setting Aside All Authority
Setting Aside All Authority is an important account and analysis of seventeenth-century scientific arguments against the Copernican system. Christopher M. Graney challenges the long-standing ideas that opponents of the heliocentric ideas of Copernicus and Galileo were primarily motivated by religion or devotion to an outdated intellectual tradition, and that they were in continual retreat in the face of telescopic discoveries. Graney calls on newly translated works by anti-Copernican writers of the time to demonstrate that science, not religion, played an important, and arguably predominant, role in the opposition to the Copernican system. Anti-Copernicans, building on the work of the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe, were in fact able to build an increasingly strong scientific case against the heliocentric system at least through the middle of the seventeenth century, several decades after the advent of the telescope. The scientific case reached its apogee, Graney argues, in the 1651 New Almagest of the Italian Jesuit astronomer Giovanni Battista Riccioli, who used detailed telescopic observations of stars to construct a powerful scientific argument against Copernicus. Setting Aside All Authority includes the first English translation of Monsignor Francesco Ingoli's essay to Galileo (disputing the Copernican system on the eve of the Inquisition's condemnation of it in 1616) and excerpts from Riccioli's reports regarding his experiments with falling bodies.
The Enigma of the Crookes Radiometer
William Crookes was one of the great nineteenth century experimental physicists. One day, as he was working in his lab, he made a discovery that would become an obsession and the centerpiece of his life for the next several years. He discovered that when he brought a source of heat close to a ball suspended in a vacuum, the ball would be repelled. He thought that he had discovered a link between heat and the force of gravity. This started him on a long series of experiments that eventually led to the common Crookes radiometer that you see today. This book tells the story of those experiments and how some of the greatest physicists of that time grappled with the enigma of how the device works. It also explains the current physical understanding of the device and presents a few basic physics problems related to how the device works.

Science, Culture and National Identity in Francoist Spain, 1939-1959
This book examines the role that science and culture held as instruments of nationalization policies during the first phase of the Franco regime in Spain. It considers the reciprocal relationship between political legitimacy and developments in science and culture, and explores the 'nationalization' efforts in Spain in the 1940s and 1950s, via the complex process of transmitting narratives of national identity, through ideas, representations and homogenizing practices. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, the volume features insights into how scientific and cultural language and symbols were used to formulate national identity, through institutions, resource distribution and specific national policies. Split into five parts, the collection considers policies in the Francoist 'New State', the role of women in these debates, and perspectives on the nationalization and internationalization efforts that made use of scientific and cultural spheres. Chapters also feature insights into cinema, literature, cultural diplomacy, mathematics and technology in debates on Catalonia, the Nuclear Energy Board, the Spanish National Research Council, and how scientific tools in Spain in this era fed into wider geopolitics with America and onto the UNESCO stage.
Bound by Muscle
In Bound by Muscle, Andrew Brown details the lives and achievements of two physiologists, Archibald Vivian Hill (1886-1977) and Otto Fritz Meyerhof (1884-1951). Hill and Meyerhof shared the 1922 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries related to metabolic changes underlying muscle activity. Bound by Muscle describes how Hill and Meyerhof's lives and careers intersected and diverged and how their work changed the course of biological science. Bound by Muscle is organized chronologically. The first four chapters consider Hill and Meyerhof's childhoods and early careers; subsequent chapters address the Nobel Prize nomination and award and how their lives were affected by the World Wars. Bound by Muscle details Hill and Meyerhof's scientific breakthroughs and professional accomplishments. The book also examines the historical context that shaped their work and how the two men differed. Hill embodied the pragmatic style of British science. He became an outspoken critic of fascism as well as an effective humanitarian. As a senior scientist, he played major roles in preparing Great Britain for World War II. In contrast, Meyerhof was shy and philosophical. A non-observant Jew, he was reluctant to leave his superb laboratory in Heidelberg as the Nazi threat became apparent. His dramatic eventual escape is described in detail for the first time. Throughout, Bound by Muscle reflects on how individual differences and historical events have shaped the trajectory of science.
Making Ammonia
This Open Access book discusses the progress of science and the transfer of scientific knowledge to technological application. It also identifies the factors necessary to achieve this progress. Based on a case study of the physical chemist Fritz Haber's discovery of ammonia synthesis between 1903 and 1909, the book places Haber's work in historical and scientific (physicochemical) context. The scientific developments of the preceding century are framed in a way that emphasizes the confluence of knowledge needed for Haber's success. Against this background, Haber's work is presented in detail along with the indispensable contributions of his colleague, the physical chemist, Walter Nernst, and their assistants. The detailed accounts of scientific advancement remind us of the physical basis on which our scientific theories and ideas are built. Without this reminder we often forget how complex, and how beautiful achievements in science can be.
