The Insecticidal Bacterial Toxins in Modern Agriculture
Increased awareness about environmental adverse effects of human activities has prompted the use of insecticides with low impact on systems associated to agriculture. Currently, the most successful biological products are based on protein toxins from the bacterial species Bacillus thuringiensis. Because of the remarkable properties of these proteins, their encoding genes were introduced into farming species (the so called Bt-crops), in such a way, that these plants are self-protected against some key insect pests. Despite the fact that a relatively large number of these toxins, with different toxicity ranges, have been described, it is still important to find new resources with novel capabilities to complement, or to replace in the future, the currently used ones. On another hand, it is important to continue studying their mode action in susceptible insects, and the changes occurred in resistant ones, to determine the most effective strategy for long lasting pest control. The focus of this Special Issue of Toxins is to provide updated information on the use of B. thuringiensis and their toxins on different field crops, the interactions of these toxins with other molecules, analyze the biochemical and molecular basis of emerging cases of resistance and, in general, to provide information which can contribute to an effective pest management with these toxins.

Porcine Viruses
Pig production is the fastest growing segment of the global livestock sector. Intensification of pig production has resulted in significant changes to traditional pig husbandry practices. Combined with urbanization and ease of travel and transport, these changes have led to an environment conducive to increased emergence and spread of viral diseases. The past decade alone has seen the global emergence and re-emergence of porcine viruses with devastating consequences: For example, in 2006, highly pathogenic porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome viruses (PRRSV) spread rapidly across Southeast Asia killing millions of animals; since its introduction into the Caucasus in 2007, the African swine fever virus has steadily spread to Eastern Europe; and in 2013-14, over 8 million pigs died when virulent porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) swept North America. In this special issue we will explore our understanding of porcine viruses and how this may be exploited to improve the control of these pathogens of economic and agricultural significance.

Reflections On Evolution
Evolution is a scientific theory holding that biological species can change through time into different ones. Through the years evolution has often been referred to as decent of species with modification. As part-and-parcel of this view of life, living organisms are thought to share genetic continuity with one another and with species that lived in the past. All life on earth is believed to share common ancestry. From its beginnings, an evolutionary views of the history of life engendered considerable controversy on a variety of levels. The reason for this is evolution replaced very ancient ideas holding that species are static entities, incapable of substantial change. Static views of nature had important scientific, ideological, religious, and political meaning and evolution was part of the challenges to them. Clearly, no other scientific theory is as ideologically linked as evolution, has been co-opted for so many various and often contradictory political purposes, or has as much to say about whom and what we are. In addition, evolution played an important role in transforming biology and natural history into modern science by unifying the many disparate areas of study which were part of these disciplines under a common intellectual paradigm. In doing so, evolution freed biology from theological constraints. This work attempts to place twenty-first century evolution into an historical and ideological context. New ideas and discoveries that have shaped, and are shaping, evolution are discussed within this framework. As an outcome of this endeavor, the development of evolutionary theory is used as a model for exploring how scientific ideas emerge and for exploring the nature of science.
Junk DNA
For decades after the identification of the structure of DNA, scientists focused only on genes, the regions of the genome that contain codes for the production of proteins. Other regions that make up 98 percent of the human genome were dismissed as "junk," sequences that serve no purpose.
