Living Water
LIVING WATER is an attempt to highlight and discuss some of the most striking examples of how Marine Ecotourism, or the non-consumptive use of marine wildlife and environments, can benefit both local people, economies and the environment itself, by providing much better alternatives for communities than 'business-as-usual' destroying species after species to simply make a living in a harsh world. But it is also a warning on how this amazing potential for good is being hampered or maligned by, first, neglect in developing adequate recognition and protection of these activities and their stakeholders at appropriate public policy fora-especially most Multilateral Environmental Agreements, where extractive use lobbies prevail-and a relentless barrage of attacks by the scientific establishment and even sectors of the environment and 'traditional community' movements on the perceived 'impact' of these activities which, as we shall see, oftentimes are anything but, regardless of sensationalistic headlines and published paper titles to the contrary. The Environment
It is undeniable that there is a belief in economic development, understood as the growth of production without limits. New production systems, with the advance of new technologies, have also accelerated the depletion of natural and environmental resources, further reducing the age-old basis of sustainability. As far as the scientific community is concerned, it is likely that environmental degradation, which is increasingly accelerated and multidimensional, is exceeding the limits of sustainability and leading nature to irreversible deterioration, given the environmental liabilities that are accumulating. Climate Financing in Ecuador
Climate change as a global problem requires an urgent global response. It does not respect borders and highlights social, economic, cultural and political problems. It also widens inequality gaps, conflicts and instability between countries. Climate finance is the cornerstone for the materialization of agreements, commitments and the fulfillment of climate goals. This research analyzes climate finance for REDD+ Ecuador under the UNFCCC, directed to PROAmazon. To evaluate the impact of climate finance, a climate investment analysis was conducted to determine the effectiveness, efficiency and equity (3E+) of the activities carried out with these funds, through the variables: deforestation rate, stakeholder participation and land tenure. After the conclusion of PROAmazonian activities in the period 2017-2023, the results show an increase in the deforestation rate, which is considered one of the highest in Latin America, caused by extractivist activities.
Current Sedimentation of the Rio Formoso Estuary - PE (Brazil)
This book focuses on oceanographic research carried out in the Formoso River estuary (08簞39'S/35簞10'W) and aimed to understand the seasonal dynamics of sedimentological and geochemical processes in the estuary. A total of 48 sediment samples were collected in September 2014 and March 2015. Particle size, geochemical analyses were carried out: MOT, CaCO3, TOC, PT, PO and PI and the C/P elemental ratio was calculated. The sediments were predominantly sandy and poorly sorted at both times. The gravel fraction accounted for little of the total samples and the largest proportion of the mud fraction occurred upstream of the estuary.As for the C/P ratio, there were dominant values above 300, indicating the continental origin of the organic matter. Seasonally, there was an increase in the parameters granulation, degree of selection and TOC, and a decrease in the parameters CaCO3, MOT, PT, PO and PI. It can be seen that the estuary is subject to the anthropogenic actions that surround it. It has shown anomalies in the spatial distribution of organic matter in the areas adjacent to the shrimp ponds and under the influence of sewage from the region's urban areas.
Dreaming of local development
As early as 1980, C繫te d'Ivoire embarked on a policy of decentralization, with the aim of bringing decision-making closer to the people and enabling them to take charge of the running of decentralized communities (communes, regions and districts). Sixteen (16) powers were transferred to these communities by the 2003 law, whose implementing decrees, intended to clarify institutional relations, have not yet been issued. More than 40 years later, the results of this decentralization in social, economic and environmental terms are judged disappointing by informed observers. This lacklustre record is the result of a number of factors, including jurisdictional conflicts between institutional players, the glaring inadequacy of qualified human resources in sufficient numbers, the weakness of financial resources handicapped by the uniqueness of the coffers so deplored by local elected representatives, and above all the absence of a global strategy for the performance of local authorities.

Drilling Engineering
This document presents the drilling program design for the Dokety-1 (A4-1) well. This is a deviated exploration well in the Doba Basin, Chad, whose objective is to intersect 2 targets: Kedeni and Mangara, located at depths of 9576.44 ft and 9037.4 ft respectively. In order to carry out this study efficiently, Halliburton Landmark and E-RedBook drilling engineering software were used to design the drilling program. The work followed a precise design process: first we designed the drilling trajectory using COMPASSTM software, then the casing program was developed using StressCheckTM and CasingSeatTM software, taking into account all possible worst-case scenarios that could destabilize the casing, including water hammer for burst strength, and loss of drilling fluid for crush strength. This was followed by the design of the cementing program, drilling mud and drilling tool. Finally, a detailed estimate of drilling time and cost was made using WellCostTM software.

Sustainable by passion and deliberate choice, not mere interest, pragmatic sustainability is a model of sustainability that contemplates the three dimensions of environmental, economic, and social factors and does not stop at announcing this concept but ensures that it is implemented in practice and is made concrete after providing analyses that support it. Pragmatic sustainability is based on the concept of altruism, just as the morning sentinels baptized by St. John Paul II defended "life at every moment of its earthly development" to make it "ever more habitable for all". We need PEACE. Not coincidentally, the research project inspiring this Special Issue is titled PEACE (Protecting the Environment: Advances in Circular Economy) and is funded by the Ministry of University and Research under the PRIN initiative, which involves Sapienza University of Rome, University of L'Aquila, University of Ferrara, Unitelma Sapienza University of Rome, and Tor Vergata University of Rome. Trees falling from the road
Many cities have been consolidated in a disorganised way, with no balance between green spaces and buildings. Trees provide shade, regulate the climate, make environments more welcoming, capture pollutants from the air and prevent flooding in waterproofed cities. However, for cultural reasons, they are considered negative by the population: leaves clog gutters, roots destroy pavements, trunks and tops get in the way of wires and, above all, they are susceptible to falls. This book consists of six chapters, the first of which is a brief introduction to the subject. The second provides a broad overview of the influence of climatic variables on tree falls in Piracicaba/SP/Brazil, with an emphasis on wind. Regions where falls are concentrated and the vulnerability of species are identified. The third chapter quantifies the Leaf Area Index (LAI) for different street trees, which was the basis for conducting the next four and five case studies using microclimate simulations with ENVI-met v3.1 software, in order to understand the behaviour of the area under predefined conditions. Since fracking emerged as a way of extracting natural gas, through intense deep drilling and the use of millions of gallons of water and chemicals to fracture shale, it has been controversial. It is perceived in different ways by different people--by some as an opportunity for increased resources and possibly jobs and other income; by others as a public health and environmental threat; and for many, an unknown. Richard Buttny, a scholar who works on rhetoric and discursive practices, read a story in his local paper in New York about hydrofracking coming to his area and had to research what it was, and what it could mean for his community. Soon he joined neighbors in fighting to have the practice banned state-wide. At the same time, he turned his scholarly eye to the messaging from both sides of the fight, using first-person accounts, interviews, and media coverage. The activists fighting fracking won. New York is now the only state in the US with sizable deposits of natural gas that has banned hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. Unfracked explains the competing rhetoric and discourses on fracking among New York-based advocates, experts, the grassroots, and political officials. Buttny examines how these positions evolved over time and how eventually the state arrived at a decision to ban this extractive technology. Thermal field and geoenergy resources of Ukraine
Geothermal study of the territory of Ukraine is unique. A network of Earth's heat flow (EF) determinations in 13000 boreholes has been created here. All TP values were corrected for the influence of paleoclimate, non-horizontal groundwater overflows, geologic structures, thrusts, and young sedimentation. Maps of the depth (corrected) TP were constructed. In terms of network density it has no analogues among the maps for comparable areas. An interpretation system was developed, which allows building thermal models of the crust and upper mantle taking into account stationary and non-stationary heat sources, and their independent control was carried out. The density distribution of geoenergetic resources of Ukraine was studied. Their total amount exceeds the reserves of all combustible minerals by 25 times.

Geological Study on Unconventional Natural Gas in Brazil
This research consists of a geological study of the potential for exploration and production of unconventional natural gas in the Paran獺 Basin, in the south and southeast of Brazil and northern Uruguay. To this end, the Irati and Ponta Grossa geological formations, located in the southern portion of the basin and characterised by their hydrocarbon generating potential, were analysed. The study also includes an assessment of the feasibility of supplying the Uruguaiana thermoelectric plant with this resource, taking into account the associated geological, socio-economic and environmental aspects. The project aims to encourage the study of unconventional energy resources, with emphasis on shale gas, the main source of unconventional natural gas explored in the world, as well as highlighting the benefits of the growing implementation of natural gas in the Brazilian energy matrix, both in strategic and economic terms. The project proposes the development of a descriptive-comparative model based on the geological aspects of the main shale gas producing fields in the United States, the world's leading producer, as a comparative basis for assessing Brazil's potential.
