Since fracking emerged as a way of extracting natural gas, through intense deep drilling and the use of millions of gallons of water and chemicals to fracture shale, it has been controversial. It is perceived in different ways by different people--by some as an opportunity for increased resources and possibly jobs and other income; by others as a public health and environmental threat; and for many, an unknown. Richard Buttny, a scholar who works on rhetoric and discursive practices, read a story in his local paper in New York about hydrofracking coming to his area and had to research what it was, and what it could mean for his community. Soon he joined neighbors in fighting to have the practice banned state-wide. At the same time, he turned his scholarly eye to the messaging from both sides of the fight, using first-person accounts, interviews, and media coverage. The activists fighting fracking won. New York is now the only state in the US with sizable deposits of natural gas that has banned hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. Thermal field and geoenergy resources of Ukraine
Geothermal study of the territory of Ukraine is unique. A network of Earth's heat flow (EF) determinations in 13000 boreholes has been created here. All TP values were corrected for the influence of paleoclimate, non-horizontal groundwater overflows, geologic structures, thrusts, and young sedimentation. Maps of the depth (corrected) TP were constructed. In terms of network density it has no analogues among the maps for comparable areas. An interpretation system was developed, which allows building thermal models of the crust and upper mantle taking into account stationary and non-stationary heat sources, and their independent control was carried out. The density distribution of geoenergetic resources of Ukraine was studied. Their total amount exceeds the reserves of all combustible minerals by 25 times.

Geological Study on Unconventional Natural Gas in Brazil
This research consists of a geological study of the potential for exploration and production of unconventional natural gas in the Paran獺 Basin, in the south and southeast of Brazil and northern Uruguay. To this end, the Irati and Ponta Grossa geological formations, located in the southern portion of the basin and characterised by their hydrocarbon generating potential, were analysed. The study also includes an assessment of the feasibility of supplying the Uruguaiana thermoelectric plant with this resource, taking into account the associated geological, socio-economic and environmental aspects. The project aims to encourage the study of unconventional energy resources, with emphasis on shale gas, the main source of unconventional natural gas explored in the world, as well as highlighting the benefits of the growing implementation of natural gas in the Brazilian energy matrix, both in strategic and economic terms. The project proposes the development of a descriptive-comparative model based on the geological aspects of the main shale gas producing fields in the United States, the world's leading producer, as a comparative basis for assessing Brazil's potential.

Significant changes in the environmental landscape
The idea of preparing this book came about when we were studying for a PhD in Geography at UFPE. As we studied the course, we researched related subjects on the YouTube platform, from which we downloaded videos of various subjects related to changes in the environmental landscape and environmental disasters of natural or man-made origin. Thus, when we traveled to beaches in other Brazilian states, we always came across significant changes that encouraged us to record the alterations to the environment.

Assessment of land degradation and ecosystem services
For several decades now, the Sahel in general and Niger in particular have been experiencing extreme climatic variations. This situation, combined with strong human pressures, has led to a loss of vegetation cover, exposing soils to the effects of erosion, structural and structural degradation, and other factors. This results in the degradation of natural resources and a loss of value in ecosystem services. The commune of Tondikandia is not immune to this situation, hence its interest in assessing land degradation and ecosystem services. To carry out this study, qualitative and quantitative data were collected from the heads of farming households in four villages in the study area, climatic and granulometric data were processed, analyzed and interpreted, and satellite images were processed to confirm the reality observed in the field. The results obtained from these analyses show that land degradation in this area is at an advanced stage, which has led to a disruption in the provision of ecosystem services.

Multifunctionality of the rural landscape
The book presents the results of an undergraduate project whose general aim was to identify and characterise the landscapes and multifunctional potential of small farms in the rural district of Itap矇 - Rio Claro (SP). To this end, the theoretical framework was based on four analytical elements: rural landscape / multifunctionality / external elements of agriculture / endogenous rural development (DINIZ, 1984, p.30 apud FERREIRA, p.50). In order to characterise the physical attributes of the neighbourhood's landscape, a survey was carried out of bibliographic and cartographic material, as well as rainfall data, which enabled the area's natural conditions to be identified. Through direct research with field observation and the application of questionnaires, an attempt was made to collect socio-economic data and also the tourist and landscape resources that exist in the area that make it possible to develop agricultural and/or non-agricultural activities as alternatives for employment and income. The aim was to understand the limitations and difficulties in terms of socio-economic aspects, infrastructure and the physical attributes of the landscape that affect the development of local families.

The mangroves of the Canan矇ia-Iguape Lagoon System, at the southern end of the coast of the state of S瓊o Paulo, have the presence of the grass Spartina alterniflora on their outer fringes, which plays a fundamental role in fixing sediments that could become mangrove propagation areas. Pioneers in the flooded mangrove region, Spartina holds and prepares the substrate for the seedlings of mangrove species to establish themselves. The mapping of Spartina alterniflora on the Canan矇ia and Comprida Islands, where these islands border the same lagoon channel, made it possible to identify the areas prone to its growth. The low energy points of the channel's water flow proved to be favourable for the emergence of Spartina banks. The continuous exchange of sediments and nutrients in a lagoon environment rich in mangroves, combined with the great capacity of Spartina to capture and attach itself, resulted in a study of connectivity between two islands.
