Algebraic Structure of String Field Theory
This book gives a modern presentation of modular operands and their role in string field theory. The authors aim to outline the arguments from the perspective of homotopy algebras and their operadic origin. Part I reviews string field theory from the point of view of homotopy algebras, including A-infinity algebras, loop homotopy (quantum L-infinity) and IBL-infinity algebras governing its structure. Within this framework, the covariant construction of a string field theory naturally emerges as composition of two morphisms of particular odd modular operads. This part is intended primarily for researchers and graduate students who are interested in applications of higher algebraic structures to strings and quantum field theory. Part II contains a comprehensive treatment of the mathematical background on operads and homotopy algebras in a broader context, which should appeal also to mathematicians who are not familiar with string theory.

Jean-Charles Houzeau’s Escape from Texas
Translated from the original French and annotated with figures, historical maps and commentary from the translators, this work is Jean-Charles Houzeau's account of his escape from Texas during the American Civil War. Houzeau was a Belgian astronomer who worked a couple of years as assistant astronomer at the Brussels Observatory, but eventually moved to the United States. He was living as a frontierman in Texas when the Civil War broke out, and because he took an abolitionist stance and helped slaves escape, he was forced to flee to Mexico, from where he sailed to New Orleans on board of a US military vessel. Originally titled La terreur blanche au Texas et mon 'evasion, Houzeau captured the details of his escape in 1862.The editors, an astronomer and a French language teacher, have added supplementary material to give the readers more depth and historical context to the story.
Laser-Tissue InteractionsFundamentals and Applications
This book has become the standard textbook and reference guide to an important and rapidly growing field. It provides a thorough description of the fundamentals and applications of modern laser medicine, discussing in detail the "basics" such as optical and thermal properties of tissue, various types of hard and soft tissue ablation, optical breakdown and its related effects. This book pays special attention to mathematical tools (Monte Carlo simulations, Kubelka-Munk theory) and tried-and-trusted techniques (photobiomodulation, photodynamic therapy, laser-induced interstitial thermotherapy, and more). In turn, the application section reviews clinically relevant methods in modern laser treatment, while the last chapter covers today's standards for laser safety, with a careful selection of essential guidelines published by the Laser Institute of America. Each chapter closes with a set of problems and solutions, allowing readers to test their acquired knowledge. This fourth edition has undergone major revisions and updating to reflect the latest developments and references. Major improvements include the addition of 60 color illustrations, a review of the various LASIK techniques in ophthalmology, and a discussion of laser applications in endodontics and implantology. The chapters addressing lasers in ophthalmology, dentistry, urology and dermatology/cosmetics have all been extensively revised and updated. Its wealth of research photographs, illustrations, tables and comprehensive summaries make this book an essential guide for graduate students, scientists and medical practitioners alike.

The Shadow of the Black Hole
Black holes entered the world of science fiction and films in the 1960s, and their popularity in our culture remains today. The buzz surrounding black holes was and is due, in large part, to their speculative nature. It is still difficult for the general public to determine fact versus fiction as it pertains to this terrifying idea: something big enough to swallow anything and everything in close proximity, with a gravitational force so strong that nothing, including light, can escape. In the fall of 2015, scientists at the Laser Interferometry Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) detected the first sounds from black holes, brought to earth by the gravitational waves that emitted from the merging of two black holes 1.4 billion light years away in space. This confirmed the existence of gravitational waves, which Albert Einstein predicted in 1916. In the spring of 2017, physicists and astronomers who were working on the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) project captured the first image of a black hole. This was the supermassive black hole hosted by the galaxy M87 in the constellation Virgo, 53 million light years away, and the image shows the shadow the black hole casts upon the bright light surrounding it. In this book, John Moffat shares the history of black holes and presents the latest research into these mysterious celestial objects, including the astounding results from gravitational wave detection and the shadow of the black hole.

Thin-Film Catalysts for Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzers and Unitized Regenera
This work revolves around the hydrogen economy and energy-storage electrochemical systems. More specifically, it investigates the possibility of using magnetron sputtering for deposition of efficient thin-film anode catalysts with low noble metal content for proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEM-WEs) and unitized regenerative fuel cells (PEM-URFCs). The motivation for this research derives from the urgent need to minimize the price of such electrochemical devices should they enter the mass production.Numerous experiments were carried out, correlating the actual in-cell performance with the varying position of thin-film catalyst within the membrane electrode assembly, with the composition of high-surface support sublayer and with the chemical structure of the catalyst itself. The wide arsenal of analytical methods ranging from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy through electrochemical atomic force microscopy to photoelectron spectroscopy allowed the descriptionof the complex phenomena behind different obtained efficiencies.Systematic optimizations led to the design of a novel PEM-WE anode thin-film iridium catalyst which performs similarly to the standard counterparts despite using just a fraction of their noble metal content. Moreover, the layer-by-layer approach resulted in the design of a Ir/TiC/Pt bi-functional anode for PEM-URFC which is able to operate in both the fuel cell and electrolyzer regime and thus helps to cut the cost of the whole conversion system even further.

Sacred Landscapes of Imperial China
This book analyses the magnificent imperial necropolises of ancient China from the perspective of Archaeoastronomy, a science which takes into account the landscape in which ancient monuments are placed, focusing especially but not exclusively on the celestial aspects. The power of the Chinese emperors was based on the so-called Mandate of Heaven: the rulers were believed to act as intermediaries between the sky gods and the Earth, and consequently, the architecture of their tombs, starting from the world-famous mausoleum of the first emperor, was closely linked to the celestial cycles and to the cosmos. This relationship, however, also had to take into account various other factors and doctrines, first the Zhao-Mu doctrine in the Han period and later the various forms of Feng Shui. As a result, over the centuries, diverse sacred landscapes were constructed. Among the sites analysed in the book are the "pyramids" of Xi'an from the Han dynasty, the mountain tombs of the Tang dynasty, and the Ming and Qing imperial tombs. The book explains how considerations such as astronomical orientation and topographical orientation according to the principles of Feng Shui played a fundamental role at these sites.

Conjuring the Universe
The marvellous complexity of the Universe emerges from several deep laws and a handful of fundamental constants that fix its shape, scale, and destiny. There is a deep structure to the world which at the same time is simple, elegant, and beautiful. Where did these laws and these constants come from? And why are the laws so fruitful when written in the language of mathematics? Peter Atkins considers the minimum effort needed to equip the Universe with its laws and its constants. He explores the origin of the conservation of energy, of electromagnetism, of classical and quantum mechanics, and of thermodynamics, showing how all these laws spring from deep symmetries. The revolutionary result is a short but immensely rich weaving together of the fundamental ideas of physics. With his characteristic wit, erudition, and economy, Atkins sketches out how the laws of Nature can spring from very little. Or arguably from nothing at all.

RelativityThe Special and the General Theory
After completing the final version of his general theory of relativity, Albert Einstein wrote a book about relativity for a popular audience. His intention was "to give an exact insight into the theory of relativity to those readers who, from a general scientific and philosophical point of view, are interested in the theory, but who are not conversant with the mathematical apparatus of theoretical physics." The book remains one of the most lucid explanations of the special and general theories ever written. In the early 1920s alone, it was translated into ten languages, and fifteen editions in the original German appeared over the course of Einstein's lifetime.

Modern Astrophysics Meets EngineeringOn the Reformation of Physics
Based on the philosophy of nature, the book develops a new understanding of the physical world and shows the logical contradictions of modern physics. The relationship between the observer and the object of observation is discussed in a dialogue with nature. The ideas behind the physical theories that led to the priest Lema簾tre's Big Bang hypothesis and their logical errors are explained. Although the big bang was refuted by the practical results of space travel in the second half of the 20th century, the astrophysicists hold fast to the mechanistic world view and stubbornly deny the electrodynamics of the cosmos. Has modern physics really become a maid of theology in the embrace of the Catholic Church, as Pope Pius X. demanded in his encyclical of 1907 against modernity? On the basis of the physical measurement system, the basics of physics are explained and the relationship between measurement and the object to be measured is considered. The cause of the force between the positive and negative charge of proton and electron is seen in an open system that is far from the thermodynamic equilibrium. This perspective allows the structure, maintenance and destruction of a structure to be explained using entropy. The structure of the cosmos can then be understood as an electrical network based on Maxwell's equations from the atom to the largest cosmic structures. In this way, electrodynamics and optics, as well as plasma physics, become the basis of this new intergalactic world view. Such a view of the world can already explain many of the phenomena discovered from space travel, which seem extremely puzzling to the conventional mechanical-gravitational world view of astrophysicists and by means of a number of exotic constructs such as black holes and neutron stars, dark matter, antimatter and dark energy be explained by them. The book is based on over two hundred mostly primary sources of literature. It requires an open mind and a basic knowledge of ma
Biological Physics Student Edition
Award-winning professor brings you from first-year physics and chemistry to the frontier of single-molecule biophysics.Biological Physics is a university textbook that focuses on results in molecular motors, self-assembly, and single-molecule manipulation that have revolutionized the field in recent years, and integrates these topics with classic results in statistical physics, biophysical chemistry, and neuroscience. The text also provides foundational material for the emerging fields of nanotechnology and mechanobiology, and has significant overlap with the revised MCAT exam. This inexpensive new edition updates the classic book, particularly the chapter on motors, and incorporates many clarifications and enhancements throughout. Exercises are given at all levels of difficulty. Instead of offering a huge pile of facts, the discovery-style exposition frequently asks the reader to reflect on "How could anything like that happen at all?" and then shows how science, and scientists, have proceeded incrementally to peel back the layers of mystery surrounding these beautiful mechanisms. Working through this book will give you an appreciation for how science has advanced in the past, and the skills and frameworks needed to push forward in the future. Additional topics include the statistical physics of diffusion; bacterial motility; self-assembly; entropic forces; enzyme kinetics; ion channels and pumps; the chemiosmotic mechanism and its role in ATP maintenance; and the discovery of the mechanism of neural signaling.

Radio Galaxies at TeV Energies
It is common believe that the centers of all galaxies exhibit supermassive black holes with masses ranging from millions up to billions of the mass of our Sun. By accreting surrounding matter, the luminosity of these galactic nuclei can outshine the emission of their host galaxies. If this is the case, they are called active galactic nuclei. Some of these objects eject powerful outflows composed of plasma, called jets. These jets can produce non-thermal radiation which observable across the entire electromagnetic spectrum from radio up to the gamma-ray frequencies. At highest frequencies (TeV range) most of the detected active galaxies have jets directed along or close to the line of sight. However, also galaxies with larger angles to the line of sight showing fascinating features were discovered, in seeming contradiction to traditional models for these so-called radio galaxies. Thus, the latter are of particular importance for understanding active galactic nuclei in general. This Special Issue contains reviews and research articles about the current knowledge of radio galaxies at TeV energies, including observational results and theoretical models. It is intended to guide the interested reader deeper into this fascinating discipline of modern day astronomy.

An Introduction to Inverse Problems in PhysicsAnIntroduction to Inverse Problems in Physic
This book is a compilation of different methods of formulating and solving inverse problems in physics from classical mechanics to the potentials and nucleus-nucleus scattering. Mathematical proofs are omitted since excellent monographs already exist dealing with these aspects of the inverse problems. The emphasis here is on finding numerical solutions to complicated equations. A detailed discussion is presented on the use of continued fractional expansion, its power and its limitation as applied to various physical problems. In particular, the inverse problem for discrete form of the wave equation is given a detailed exposition and applied to atomic and nuclear scattering, in the latter for elastic as well as inelastic collision. This technique is also used for inverse problem of geomagnetic induction and one-dimensional electrical conductivity. Among other topics covered are the inverse problem of torsional vibration, and also a chapter on the determination of the motion of a body with reflecting surface from its reflection coefficient.
