This book presents the first detailed biography of George Placzek -- an outstanding physicist, a participant in the Manhattan Project who stood at the very inception of nuclear physics and the subsequent development of the nuclear bomb in the course of the WWII. In the 1930s, George Placzek was known as an adventurous person with a sharp sense of humor, a tireless generator of novel physics ideas which he generously shared with his colleagues. Born in Brno (now Czech Republic) into a wealthy Jewish family, he lost all his relatives to Holocaust, casting a tragic shadow on his life.Placzek's scientific career began in the late 1920s when the quantum revolution was almost over, but nuclear physics was still at its infancy. He established personal and scientific relations with the creators of quantum mechanics, such as Heisenberg in Leipzig and Niels Bohr in Copenhagen. In Rome, he worked with Fermi, and in Copenhagen he became a part of Bohr's nuclear physics team which dominated nuclear theory at that time. The scope of Placzek's pilgrimage around world physics centers in the 1930s was unique among his colleagues. In January 1939, George Placzek managed to emigrate from Europe to the US, and became a part of the British Mission within the Manhattan Project. His physical insights were instrumental in advancing from the basic discoveries on nuclear chain reactions to the Trinity experiment, Hiroshima and Nagasaki.This book is a unique compilation of a large number of previously unknown and unpublished documents from private and university archives, police reports, etc. Placzek's correspondence with the leadership of the Hebrew University in 1934, the 1937 NKVD interrogation files of Konrad Weisselberg, recollections of Ella Andriesse as well as the Zurich Police report of 1956 detailing the circumstances of Placzek's death in a Zurich hotel are illuminating as they shed light on poorly known pages of his life.

Then, after atomic bonding, molecules and condensed matter are discussed before approaching the structural properties of crystal and soft matter. The final chapter 6, deals with the basic properties of lasers, due to the relevance of light sources in everyday life, and their widespread use in all branches of engineering.

I also believe that the laws of physics are not picked at random but there exists an underlying principle from which they can be derived with ease. Failure for some minds to grasp this principle doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. Because I was used to deriving and proving formulae in pure math, I didn't like the way the laws of physics were presented to me without proof. A physics tutor would just write down a set of physical laws without proof. There are so many physics books which still do the same thing. Being curious and passionate to finding out how I could derive all the laws of physics from one single equation is proof that this book would have never existed in the first place if had not discovered the hidden principle that underlies all physics.

Joint Venture Agreements in the Qatari Gas IndustryA Theoretical and an Empirical Analysis

This book addresses a question of importance for both theory and practice: Why are joint venture agreements preferred over other types of agreements such as concession agreements, service contracts, and production sharing agreements in the Qatari gas industry? On a theoretical level, the author analyses this decision-making process by developing an approach that integrates a micro-level analysis, more specifically within international oil companies, with a macro-level analysis that spring from the organisational culture of the Qatari gas industry. At the micro level, the author proposes John Dunning's eclectic paradigm (as one set of theoretical ideas) to explaining one element of the decision-making process leading to the preference for joint venture agreements, that is, that of international oil companies. At the macro-level, the author proposes Antony Giddens' structuration theory (as another set of theoretical ideas) to explaining another part of this decision-making process, that is, how it is being shaped by the organisational culture of the Qatari gas industry. On an empirical level, the proposed book applies a combination of a micro-economic approach such as Dunning's eclectic paradigm with a macro-sociological approach such as Giddens' structuration theory by empirical investigation. Grounded on a qualitative strategy that focuses on the meaning-making which brings together different perspectives of this decision-making process including those of international oil companies and the organisational culture of the Qatari gas industry, the proposed book utilises a case study design, named the case of the Qatari gas industry. The author employs a triangulation of data collection techniques to access empirical data: analysing official documents and semi-structured interviews (a sample of the interview questions are included in an appendix to the proposed books). In line with the qualitative nature of this proposed book, a thematic Analysis is adopted to interpret data based on Dunning's eclectic paradigm at the micro level and Giddens' structuration theory at the macro level. In doing so, this book connects theory with practice by investigating the preference for joint venture agreements in the case of the Qatari industry by the combined application of one of the most effective frameworks for explaining foreign direct investment, named Dunning's eclectic paradigm along with the most complex sociological framework that offers a rich definition of organisational culture, named Giddens' structuration theory. Audience could include academics, professionals, and graduate and senior undergraduate students.

Die durch den Begriff "wissenschaftliche Revolution" implizierte z羹gige Wende mag dar羹ber hinwegt瓣uschen, wie langwierig und beschwerlich der Weg der kopernikanischen Idee eines heliozentrischen Weltbilds bis zu dessen Akzeptanz tats瓣chlich war. Demnach widmet sich das zweite Kapitel dieser Hausarbeit zun瓣chst einem allgemeinen Teil, in dem es vor allem um das Begriffsverst瓣ndnis zur "wissenschaftlichen Revolution" geht, wie es im Wissenschaftshistorischen Kontext gebr瓣uchlich ist. Lyman-Alpha as an Astrophysical and Cosmological Tool

The hydrogen Lyman-alpha line is of utmost importance to many fields of astrophysics. This UV line being conveniently redshifted with distance to the visible and even near infrared wavelength ranges, it is observable from the ground, and provides the main observational window on the formation and evolution of high redshift galaxies. Absorbing systems that would otherwise go unnoticed are revealed through the Lyman-alpha forest, Lyman-limit, and damped Lyman-alpha systems, tracing the distribution of baryonic matter on large scales, and its chemical enrichment.We are living an exciting epoch with the advent of new instruments and facilities, on board of satellites and on the ground. Wide field and very sensitive integral field spectrographs are becoming available on the ground, such as MUSE at the ESO VLT. The giant E-ELT and TMT telescopes will foster a quantum leap in sensitivity and both spatial and spectroscopic resolution, to the point of being able, perhaps, to measure directly the acceleration of the Hubble flow. In space, the JWST will open new possibilities to study the Lyman-alpha emission of primordial galaxies in the near infrared. As long as the Hubble Space Telescope will remain available, the UV-restframe properties of nearby galaxies will be accessible to our knowledge. Therefore, this Saas-Fee course appears very timely and should meet the interest of many young researchers.

Calculations have shown that doping of chromium at cationic sites of wurtzite zinc sulphide results in formation of a p-type semiconductor. Addition of hubbard term in the system causes an increase in band gap value and creates a gap between spin up and spin down channels for 3d states of chromium atoms. Chromium doped ZnS possess half metallic character because of excess in majority spin carriers than minority ones. Hopping of electrons in anti-bonding states of chromium atoms refers to the ferromagnetic behavior of the material. Half metallicity and ferromagnetic nature of the chromium doped wurtzite zinc sulphide makes this material a best candidate to be used in the field of spintronics. For the past few decades, work in semiconductor field appears to be of substantial importance in industrial world and offers a new direction to upgrade the standards of life. This novel era of semi-conductors has remake the history of science with its groundbreaking technology and has proven to be an extensively emerging field to handle even single atoms and molecules for manipulation and fabrications. In the recent years, material science has open a new window towards applicability of semiconductor devices in electronics, spintronics and many other branches of science. In Noether's original presentation of her celebrated theorem of 1918, allowances were made for the dependence of the coefficient functions of the differential operator which generated the infinitesimal transformation of the Action Integral upon the derivatives of the dependent variable(s), the so-called generalized, or dynamical, symmetries. A similar allowance is to be found in the variables of the boundary function, often termed a gauge function by those who have not read the original paper. This generality was lost after texts such as those of Courant and Hilbert or Lovelock and Rund confined attention to only point transformations. In recent decades, this diminution of the power of Noether's Theorem has been partly countered, in particular, in the review of Sarlet and Cantrijn. In this Special Issue, we emphasize the generality of Noether's Theorem in its original form and explore the applicability of even more general coefficient functions by allowing for nonlocal terms. We also look at the application of these more general symmetries to problems in which parameters or parametric functions have a more general dependence upon the independent variables.
