Animals in Translation

2025/05/27 出版

Now with a Q&A and new foreword by the author With unique personal insight, experience, and hard science, Animals in Translation is the definitive, groundbreaking work on animal behavior and psychology. Temple Grandin's professional training as an animal scientist and her history as a person with autism have given her a perspective like that of no other expert in the field of animal science. Grandin and coauthor Catherine Johnson present their powerful theory that autistic people can often think the way animals think--putting autistic people in the perfect position to translate "animal talk." Exploring animal pain, fear, aggression, love, friendship, communication, learning, and even animal genius, Grandin is a faithful guide into their world. Animals in Translation reveals that animals are much smarter than anyone ever imagined, and Grandin, standing at the intersection of autism and animals, offers unparalleled observations and extraordinary ideas about both.

Antarctica

Tony,Soper  著
Ingram 出版
2025/05/25 出版

Antarctica is home to the world's largest concentration of wildlife in the coldest, windiest and driest place on earth. Cruise the Southern Ocean for a wandering albatross, land on continental beaches to sit with thousands of penguins, keep a sharp eye open for humpback whales against a backdrop of snow-covered mountains soaring upwards from the sea, marvel at orcas harrying Weddell seals off ice floes, or gawp at a leopard seal as it grabs and flays a penguin. Visiting Antarctica means being in your very own natural-history documentary. Conditions may be extreme, but wildlife thrives in superb scenery. Bradt's Antarctica: A Guide to the Wildlife brings to life the history of exploration (and exploitation) in this vast polar desert, where two-thirds of the world's fresh water is locked up as ice on a continent twice the size of Australia. This readable introduction to mammals, birds, fish, invertebrates and plants is ideal for those 'going south' to the world's highest continent, where more than half the land exceeds 6,560 feet above sea level. Celebrating the amazing species of this spectacular environment, the guide features chapters on the region's famous whales and penguins alongside entries on lesser-known species like skuas and sheathbills. Each species account blends extensive insights into natural history with identification tips and stunning artwork. Although focusing on wildlife on the Antarctic Peninsula, an appendix on South Georgia's wildlife briefs those whose itinerary extends to that island. Updated throughout to address the needs of a flourishing but environmentally conscious tourism industry, this eighth edition takes account of evolving changes in population dynamics of Antarctic creatures, and reflects profound changes ice-shelf extent, which have made it easier for expedition vessels to contemplate visiting emperor penguin colonies. Written by renowned expedition leader and former natural-history broadcaster Tony Soper and illustrated with specially commissioned paintings by Dafila Scott (granddaughter of 'Scott of the Antarctic', no less), Bradt's Antarctica: A Guide to the Wildlife is an informative, entertaining guidebook that will whet your appetite for this trip of a lifetime - and will always be within arm's reach when you get there.

Evaluation of Pharmacological Activities of Elytraria acaulis Plant

2025/05/23 出版

This book consisting of Evaluation of Pharmacological Activities of Elytraria acaulis Plant Extracts in Albino Rats. Whole plant extracts of Elytraria acaulis here showed different pharmacological activities in the present study. The hydroalcoholic extract was noticed with its antioxidant activity. The ethnol and aqueous extracts were revealed with the effective hepatoprotective activity against CCl4 induced hepato toxic rats. The reduced levels of SGPT, SGOT and increased levels of HDL were the same of markers to explain the hepatoprotective activity. The presence of phytoche micals like tannins, phenols may be the reason for the antioxidant and hepatopro tective activity. The fertility studies of methanol and aqueous extracts were reveale d that the reduced sperm count and motility. The alterning serum parameters were also observed in the both extract treated male albino rats. The histological sections of liver and testis were also supporting the results of hepatoprotective and antifertility activity of the Elytraria acaulis extracts. However, further studies are needed to findout the active compounds which are responsible for the above pharmacological activities.

Living with Lynx

Jonny,Hanson  著
2025/05/14 出版

This book investigates a vital and controversial question for conservation and rewilding in Britain and Ireland: could and should we learn to live with lynx, wolves and bears again? We travel back in time, around the world and into the future to explore this contested topic. The author delves deep into the human psyche, considering not only his own mixed feelings about large carnivore reintroductions but also why people have such polarised perspectives on top predators. He brings his unique combination of expertise on snow leopards - and their relationship with humans - along with his experience as a farmer to illustrate the discussion. Along the way, we meet a cast of characters from across society, including farmers, rewilders and everyone in between. It becomes clear that coexisting with large carnivores is as much about sharing landscapes with each other as it is about sharing them with wildlife. The first book to tackle this subject in detail, based on more than 50 interviews from seven countries, Living with Lynx will be of relevance to anyone with an interest in the future of nature, farming and the countryside. Personal, detailed, unflinching and engaging, it adds a great deal to this rapidly evolving debate.
