Which brings the ire of the educated laureates. But with that said this offering is about when I am in nature and how it makes me feel. Those same feelings I hope to ignite in you as you read and drift in the honeysuckle scent, cringe at the crack of a lightning bolt, feel the hair raise on the back of your neck at the whale of a bobcat in the distance or simply just lying back, baking in the healing warmth of the sun, in a field of Yarrow alongside a babbling stream. Enjoy, it's the nature of things to do so. There is adventure right outside your door. Just go!

Warblish, Chirpish, Ticktocklish, & Animalopoeia
There is a little-known practice of interpreting the sounds of birds, insects, animals, and inanimate objects as intelligible, yet onomatopoeic words. Common examples include the Yellowhammer's song being rendered as, 'A little bit of bread and no cheese, please, ' and the Bushcricket saying, 'Katy did, Katy didn't'. Despite being widespread across languages and cultures 'birdsong mnemonics' have rarely been explored and never in this depth. This ground-breaking book covers the sound imitations by bringing together 1500 examples from 62 languages. It examines what these imitations have in common and argues for the use of new terminology and classification of these examples.

A charming and entertaining true story starting in 1981 when Pamela B. Murray-Rham became the adopted mother to a two-day old cygnet. Even though she was used to hand rearing and nursing wildlife within a small semi-detached house in Yeovil, neither she nor the rest of the family knew what adventures would await them when adopting a cygnet. Gale the swan immediately imprinted on Pamela and lived indoors. Pamela kept a daily diary of Gale's progress, from learning how to feed her, her growth rate, her antics, the process of teaching her how to fly at the reservoir and her trips to the supermarket in the shopping trolley. With the addition of Sydney, a fully grown male swan who also joined the family and the success in releasing them both to a stately home... Pamela has now turned their adventures into this lovely heart-warming story.

Shrimp and Prawn Welfare in the Wild-Caught Fishing Industry
At 37 trillion individuals per year, wild-caught shrimp and prawns appear to be the single most numerous group of animals directly killed for human food consumption on the planet. Recent scientific developments suggest that at least some species of shrimp are sentient beings, and, should that be the case, there is a need for policies that could improve shrimp welfare. This book delves into the ethical implications of the probability that shrimp and prawns are capable of feeling pain and the welfare policies that could be adopted. It looks at global shrimp fisheries and their different animal welfare concerns, from the largest industrial trawlers in developed and developing countries to small-scale fisheries in developing countries. The authors provide a new dataset of the estimated numbers of individual shrimp caught by country and species, using this to describe the shrimp fishing industry in the world's top 30 countries by estimated catch.Examining recent developments in government and industry policy, the book suggests ways that policymakers could improve wild-caught shrimp welfare, from installing electrical stunning equipment in large-scale trawl fisheries to improving supply chain practices in small-scale fisheries. It provides a roadmap for future research and policy to address this urgent, emerging challenge. This book's data, visualisations, and roadmap will empower researchers, NGOs, and policymakers to focus their efforts on the most impactful and evidence-based solutions for improving aquatic animal welfare.

Dinosaurs at the Dinner Party
From the bestselling author of The Clockwork Universe and The Writing of the Gods, an "utterly delightful...hugely entertaining" (Air Mail) book about the eccentric Victorians who discovered dinosaur bones, leading to a whole new understanding of human history. In the early 1800s the natural world was a safe and cozy place, or so people believed. But then a twelve-year-old farm boy in Massachusetts stumbled on a row of fossilized three-toed footprints the size of dinner plates--the first dinosaur tracks ever found. Soon, in England, scientists unearthed enormous bones that reached as high as a man's head. Outside of myths and fairy tales, no one had even imagined that creatures like three-toed giants had once lumbered across the land--nor dreamed that they could all have vanished, hundreds of millions years ago. In Dinosaurs at the Dinner Party, celebrated storyteller and historian Edward Dolnick leads us through a compelling true adventure as the paleontologists of the early 19th century puzzled their way through the fossil record to create the story of dinosaurs we know today. The tale begins with Mary Anning, a poor, uneducated woman who had a sixth sense for finding fossils buried deep inside cliffs; moves to William Buckland, an eccentric geologist who filled his home with specimens and famously pieced together a prehistoric scene from the fossil record inside a cave; and then on to the controversial Richard Owen, the era's best-known scientist, and the one who coined the term "dinosaur." "Exuberant" (Kirkus Reviews), entertaining, erudite, and featuring an unconventional cast of characters, Dinosaurs at the Dinner Party tells the story of how the accidental discovery of prehistoric creatures upended humanity's understanding of the world and its own place within it.
Animal Activism On and Off Screen
Animal Activism On and Off Screen examines the relationship between animal advocacy and the film and television industries. Leading scholars, activists, and film industry professionals critically analyse the ways in which animal activism has been represented inside and outside film and television programs in relation to the politics of celebrity, vegan, and animal activism.Case studies include UK, US, and German television crime fiction, feature-length advocacy documentaries such as Blackfish (2013), The Ghosts in Our Machine (2013), The Animal People (2019) and Meat the Future (2020); fiction films such as Okja (2017) and Cloud Atlas (2012); as well as celebrity chefs, French activism and celebrity activists Pamela Anderson, Joaquin Phoenix and James Cromwell.By exploring three key aspects of the current context for animal rights: representations of activism on screen; activist texts and their reception; and celebrity vegans and animal advocates, Animal Activism On and Off Screen evaluates the efficacy of advocacy narratives in film and on television, and offers important insights intended to inform animal advocacy strategies and campaigns.
Animal Welfare in China
The plight of animals in China has attracted intense interest in recent times. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, speculation about the origins of the virus have sparked global curiosity Speculation about the origins of COVID-19 has sparked curiosity about how animals are treated, traded and consumed in China today. In Animal Welfare in China, Peter Li explores the key animal welfare challenges facing China now, including animal agriculture, bear farming, and the trade and consumption of exotic wildlife, dog meat, and other controversial products. He considers how Chinese policymakers have approached these issues and speaks with activists from China's growing animal rights movement.Li also offers an overview of the history of animal welfare in China, from ancient times through the enormous changes of the 20th and 21st centuries. Some practices that are today described as "traditional", he argues, are in fact quite recent developments, reflecting the contemporary pursuit of economic growth rather than long-standing cultural traditions.Based on years of fieldwork and analysis, Animal Welfare in China makes a compelling case for a more nuanced and evidence-based approach to these complex issues.

Roles of Macro-benthic Invertebrates in Egyptian Waters
Benthos refers to organisms (plants and animals) living on or in the bottom of aquatic ecosystems, including marine, brackish, and freshwater environments. Environmental factors such as depth, salinity, and sediment type significantly influence the composition and richness of macro-benthic communities.Egyptian aquatic environments encompass the Nile River, Egypt's primary freshwater source, and the marine coasts of both the Mediterranean and Red Seas. Numerous studies have highlighted the diverse roles of macro-benthic invertebrates in these ecosystems. Key roles include serving as food sources within the food chain, providing nutrition for humans, and being sources of marine natural products used in medical and economic sectors. Additionally, they act as bio-indicators of environmental health. However, some macro-benthic invertebrates have adverse roles, such as acting as intermediate hosts for diseases like schistosomiasis, producing toxins harmful to humans, and being invasive species that damage the environment and economy. Marine fouling organisms also play a detrimental role in marine industries by impairing infrastructure and increasing maintenance costs.
