This flora of 70 species is dominated by deciduous trees, many with descendants in China. Precipitation was 890 mm, mean annual temperature 12.5簞C, the annual range 10簞C, and freezing rare. Elevation was about 1000 meters. Comparison with the Horse Prairie flora, 30 miles east and across the present continental divide, indicates that the divide was then low and discontinuous, with warmer climate to the east.

Novel Plant Imaging and Analysis
This open access book is only an introduction to show that radiation and radioisotopes (RI) are premier tools to study living plant physiology which leads to new findings. Who had ever imagined that we could see water in a plant? Who had ever imagined that we could see ions moving toward roots in solution? Who had ever imagined that we could see invisible gas (CO2) fixation and movement in a plant? These studies demonstrated for the first time that water, ions and gas can be visualized in living plants, which could be hardly seen by anyone before. This publication summarizes the results obtained by Nakanishi's lab in The Univ. of Tokyo, based on her original concept and her original tools or systems. It is useful for professional scientists, plant physiologist, and those studying plant imaging. The chapters demonstrates the innovative imaging work of the author, using radioactive tracers and neutron beam to follow the absorption and transport manner of wateras well as major, minor, and trace elements in plants. Through these studies the author developed a real-time macroscopic and microscopic imaging system able to apply commercially available gamma- and beta-ray emitters. The real-time movement of the elements is now possible by using 14C, 18F, 22Na, 28Mg, 32P, 33P, 35S, 42K, 45Ca, 48V, 54Mn, 55Fe, 59Fe, 65Zn, 86Rb, 109Cd, and 137Cs. The imaging methods was applied to study the effect of 137Cs following 3/11 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant accident, which has revealed the movements of radiocesium in the contaminated sites.

Ozark Plants
Ozark Plants is a full-color field guide to over 500 plant species found in the Ozark Mountain region of southern Missouri, northern Arkansas, and the northeastern corner of Oklahoma. Illustrated with hundreds of color photographs, the book describes each plant followed by a discussion of the plant's distribution, habitat, and value for wildlife and livestock. A key is provided so that the reader may more easily identify unknown plant specimens. The Ozark region is a plateau and mountain area of more than 40,000 square miles at the western edge of the eastern deciduous forest, and host a rich assemblage of plant species. Overall, nearly 3,300 vascular plant species are known from the region, within approximately 1066 genera and 186 families. This diversity is due, in part, to a long presence uninterrupted by glaciation, varied site and soil conditions, and a midcontinental geographic position. This geographical location has resulted in many species with distributional centers outside of the Ozarks reaching their range limits here. For example, the range of certain plants from the southwestern United States extends to the Ozarks, typically in dry-soil environments such as the glades. On moist, north-facing slopes, plants from the northern and eastern United States may be found. Some typically southern species occur in special habitats, including many parts of the Boston Mountains.
