Digital Photography Explained

Ingram 出版
2023/10/31 出版

This book can serve as a missing guide for technical features of digital photography that many enthusiasts are unaware of or remain bewildered about. An interesting example is that cameras with sensor sizes differing by a factor of three or four can have the same size resolution. The advantages of sensors -- found in larger and more expensive cameras -- are elucidated to readers. Another example is the explanation to why the depth of field increases as the lens aperture becomes smaller. The transition from diffraction-limited to sensor-limited resolution is also discussed. Through these examples, one discovers that the optics of practical, thick compound lenses can be understood using the formulas for the more familiar thin lenses. The book further expounds on procedures that are necessary to obtain true color images. For example, CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) sensors are equipped with color filters such that the intensity of the red, green and blue colors are recorded separately. Since the colors must be combined for print and digital displays, the separate colors recorded in the camera must somehow be merged. This process known as demosaicing is vividly explained. In fact, the technology for defining colors is a separate issue that is also treated in this book.Readers will learn that both our vision and computer displays respond in a nonlinear fashion that requires an operation known as gamma mapping, which is built into all monitors. An important takeaway for camera and photography enthusiasts is that in order to avoid moir矇 effects in certain types of photographs, most cameras have an anti-aliasing filter that has the unfortunate effect of smearing the resolution. This filter can, however, be removed in certain high-end cameras.

My Brain Matters

Joe,Diduro  著
Ingram 出版
2023/10/31 出版

Whether it is due to injury, a neurodegenerative condition, or simply the stress of everyday life, many of us are walking around with compromised brain health. In fact, this is so common that we have come to view troubling symptoms as normal. In My Brain Matters, Dr. Joe DiDuro, a chiropractic neurologist with a master's degree in scientific research, takes readers along on his own journey of discovering the healing power of light, learning that his own brain needed healing, and the ultimate challenge of applying his professional expertise to his own mother when she became ill with Alzheimer's disease.Told with humor and compassion, My Brain Matters is a combination of stories from Dr. Joe's life and career as a scientist and healer with a step-by-step guide to improving your brain health. It delves deep into the research about multiple areas of brain health, including the author's particular area of expertise: photobiomodulation, the safe, non-invasive treatment that sets the body and brain up for healing and improved function through the application of red and near infrared light with simple devices for at-home use. The advice the book offers is backed up with evidence-meticulously referenced to satisfy even the most skeptical reader-and explained with clear, straightforward language to make it accessible to all.

The Large-Scale Structure of Inductive Inference

Ingram 出版
2023/10/28 出版

The Large-Scale Structure of Inductive Inference investigates the relations of inductive support on the large scale, among the totality of facts comprising a science or science in general. These relations form a massively entangled, non-hierarchical structure which is discovered by making hypotheses provisionally that are later supported by facts drawn from the entirety of the science. What results is a benignly circular, self-supporting inductive structure in which universal rules are not employed, the classical Humean problem cannot be formulated and analogous regress arguments fail. The earlier volume, The Material Theory of Induction, proposed that individual inductive inferences are warranted not by universal rules but by facts particular to each context. This book now investigates how the totality of these inductive inferences interact in a mature science. Each fact that warrants an individual inductive inference is in turn supported inductively by other facts. Numerous case studies in the history of science support, and illustrate further, those claims. This is a novel, thoroughly researched, and sustained remedy to the enduring failures of formal approaches to inductive inference. With The Large-Scale Structure of Inductive Inference, author John D. Norton presents a novel, thoroughly researched, and sustained remedy to the enduring failures of formal approaches of inductive inference.

Philosophy of Physical Magnitudes

Ingram 出版
2023/10/27 出版

Dimensional quantities such as length, mass and charge, i.e., numbers combined with a conventional unit, are essential components of theories in the sciences, especially physics, chemistry and biology. Do they represent a world with absolute physical magnitudes, or are they merely magnitude ratios in disguise? Would we notice a difference if all the distances or charges in the world suddenly doubled? These central questions of this Element are illustrated by imagining how one would convey the meaning of a kilogram to aliens if one were only allowed to communicate via Morse code.

Artificial Earth

Ingram 出版
2023/10/24 出版

Artificial Earth: A Genealogy of Planetary Technicity offers an intellectual history of humanity as a geological force, focusing on a prevalent contradiction in the Anthropocene discourse on global environmental change: on the one hand, it has been argued that there are hardly any pristine environments anymore, to the degree that the concept of nature has lost its meaning; while on the other, that anthropogenic environmental change has become so prevailing that it ought to be conceived of as a force of nature, in the literal sense of the expression. Artificial Earth argues that to fully grasp the stakes of this discourse, we need not only understand the contemporary scientific and technological transformations behind the Anthropocene, but also explore the history of an ontological concern tied up with it.In order to do so, Artificial Earth examines reflections on the ontological dualism between nature and artifice within the history of earth science from the late eighteenth century onwards. Paying particular attention to its consequences for how human subjectivity has been conceptualized in the Anthropocene, it then enrolls these resources in an effort to problematize attempts since the 1980s to formalize earth science in systems theoretical terminology. In sum, the aim is to investigate the historical conditions for the possibility of conceiving human artifice as an integral part of the earth's terrestrial environment, with the conviction that such an investigation may assist in resolving the aforementioned contradiction or at least to understand it better by tracing its historical lineage. J. Daniel Andersson is a post-doctoral researcher at the Department for Thematic Studies, Link繹ping University. His research interests lie at the intersection between the technical cultures, political imaginaries, and historical processes that have shaped the ways in which the global environment has been understood and valued. A general fascination with how concepts and discursive vocabularies become solidified in scientific modes of organization has consistently informed his theoretical and methodological approaches. He has previously written about, for instance, the relationship between future-orientation and valuation in integrated assessment models, climate engineering as a sociotechnical imaginary, and the intellectual history of risk management in global change science. His writing has appeared in journals such as Environment & Planning, Anthropocenes, and Cosmos & History.

The BAM Framework

Ingram 出版
2023/10/13 出版

The BAM Framework: Understanding Species Distributions in a Dynamic WorldThe intricate interplay between species and their environment is a subject of immense fascination and ecological importance. In the face of climate change, habitat loss, and other environmental challenges, understanding how species distributions evolve in a dynamic world is crucial for effective conservation and management. Enter the BAM Framework, a groundbreaking approach that promises to revolutionize our understanding of this complex ecological puzzle. At its core, the BAM Framework stands for Biotic, Abiotic, and Movement factors, the three pillars upon which this innovative methodology is built. It recognizes that species distributions are not static but are shaped by a multitude of variables, including biological interactions, environmental conditions, and the mobility of the species themselves.Biotic factors encompass the intricate web of species interactions, from predator-prey relationships to competition for resources. Understanding how these interactions influence species distributions is a central focus of the BAM Framework.Abiotic factors delve into the environmental conditions that shape ecosystems, including temperature, precipitation, soil composition, and more. By integrating these variables into the analysis, the framework provides a comprehensive view of the ecological landscape.Movement factors consider the mobility of species, whether through migration, dispersal, or other means. This aspect of the framework acknowledges that species can adapt and respond to changing conditions by moving to more suitable habitats. What sets the BAM Framework apart is its holistic approach, integrating these three critical dimensions into a unified model. Researchers can now delve deep into the ecological dynamics of species distributions, uncovering hidden patterns and responses to environmental change. The BAM Framework is not just a theoretical concept; it has practical applications in conservation, land management, and ecological restoration. By providing a nuanced understanding of how species interact with their environment, it equips scientists and policymakers with valuable insights to make informed decisions for the protection of biodiversity. In a world where the challenges facing our ecosystems are ever-evolving, the BAM Framework offers hope and a pathway to a more profound understanding of the natural world. It is a tool that will empower us to navigate the complex and dynamic landscape of species distributions with precision and insight.

Primary Physical Science Education

Hans U,Fuchs  著
Springer 出版
2023/10/12 出版

This open access book is the first of two volumes that integrates a study of direct encounters with Primary Forces of Nature, Wind, Light, Rain, Heat and Cold, Water, etc., with imaginative narrative forms of communication. The approach developed in this book shows how the growth of cognitive tools (first of mythic and then of romantic forms of understanding) lets children make sense of experiencing physical phenomena. An in-depth description of Fluids, Gravity, and Heat as Basic Forces shows how primary sense-making can evolve into understanding of aspects of physical science, allowing for a nature-based pedagogy and application to environmental systems. The final chapter introduces visual metaphors and theatrical storytelling that are particularly useful for understanding the role of energy in physical processes. It explores how a mythic approach to nature can inform early science pedagogy. This book is of interest to kindergarten and primary school teachers as well asearly education researchers and instructors.

Inspired by pragmatist philosophy, he reconceives the very notions of reality and truth on the basis of his concept of the 'operational coherence' of epistemic activities, and offers new pragmatist conceptions of truth and reality as operational ideals achievable in actual scientific practice. Rejecting the version of scientific realism that is concerned with claiming that our theories correspond to an ultimate reality, he proposes instead an 'activist realism': a commitment to do all that we can actually do to improve our knowledge of realities. His book will appeal to scholars and students in philosophy, science and the history of science, and all who are concerned about the place of science and empirical truth in society.

Darwin's Argument by Analogy

Ingram 出版
2023/10/12 出版

In On the Origin of Species (1859), Charles Darwin put forward his theory of natural selection. Conventionally, Darwin's argument for this theory has been understood as based on an analogy with artificial selection. But there has been no consensus on how, exactly, this analogical argument is supposed to work - and some suspicion too that analogical arguments on the whole are embarrassingly weak. Drawing on new insights into the history of analogical argumentation from the ancient Greeks onward, as well as on in-depth studies of Darwin's public and private writings, this book offers an original perspective on Darwin's argument, restoring to view the intellectual traditions which Darwin took for granted in arguing as he did. From this perspective come new appreciations not only of Darwin's argument but of the metaphors based on it, the range of wider traditions the argument touched upon, and its legacies for science after the Origin.

Environmental and Resource Economics

Ingram 出版
2023/10/10 出版

Modern society is currently facing a cascade of environmental crises. Moving forward, it will be the job of current and future generations to develop sound and creative approaches to addressing them. This book attempts to provide insight into the ways in which society can confront modern agricultural, environmental, and resource challenges. In particular, it provides an economic lens with which to examine and confront these issues. The first part of the book introduces a general economic framework that can be used to analyze these issues. Subsequent chapters rely on this framework to introduce and explain specific concepts in agricultural, environmental, and resource economics, including (but not limited to) non-renewable and renewable resource management, pesticide use, and climate change. The book develops quantitative tools that the readership can use to analyze and better understand the complexities of these challenges. Each chapter includes specific applications, and an accompanying Appendix includes a longer list of practice problems that can be brought into courses as exercises.Resources are available to instructors who adopt this book. Habitats

Ingram 出版
2023/10/08 出版

Celebrates and explains the astonishing range of habitats on Earth and the intricate balance of their animal and plant communities This book is a beautiful visual reference to the world's natural habitats and the plants and animals that live there. It explores global habitat types, including desert, Arctic tundra, and tropical forest - and distinctive regional habitats, such as the windswept puna grasslands of the Andes or the dripping, fern-clad rainforests of New Zealand. Packed with fascinating illustrations, the book analyzes how each habitat works and examines its unique combination of plants and animals, along with the features that suit them to live there. It then goes deeper, telling stories about how the inhabitants relate to one another and interact. Stories are told using images and graphics, showing what is going on in the natural ecosystem. The stories include survival strategies and life cycles, how pollinators fertilize plants, and how animals distribute the seeds, how similar species divide up food or living space to avoid competition, and how some species cooperate in intimate partnerships. Earth's pristine wildernesses are dwindling, so the book includes national parks, wildlife reserves, and other protected areas, and the conservation efforts needed to preserve our precious biological diversity.

The Physics Behind Nanotechnology & Mathematical Modelling

Ingram 出版
2023/10/08 出版

Nanotechnology is a multidisciplinary field that involves the manipulation and control of matter at the nanoscale, typically ranging from 1 to 100 nanometers. At this scale, the properties of materials can significantly differ from their bulk counterparts, leading to unique and enhanced functionalities. The physics behind nanotechnology encompasses various principles and phenomena that govern the behavior of matter at the nanoscale. In this book, we can see how these principles help explain phenomena related to heat transfer, phase transitions, and fluctuations at the nanoscale. Understanding these principles is crucial for designing and optimizing nanoscale devices and systems. One of the fundamental concepts in nanotechnology is quantum mechanics. Quantum mechanics describes the behavior of particles at the atomic and subatomic levels. It provides a framework for understanding phenomena such as wave-particle duality, quantization of energy levels, and tunneling. In nanotechnology, quantum mechanics plays a crucial role in explaining the electronic properties of nanomaterials. Mathematical modelling plays a vital role in understanding and predicting the behavior of nanoscale systems. It provides a quantitative framework for describing complex phenomena and optimizing device performance. Mathematical models in nanotechnology often involve differential equations, statistical methods, and computational simulations. It is crucial for understanding the mechanical properties of nanomaterials. Models based on continuum mechanics, such as elasticity theory and plasticity theory, can predict the behavior of nanomaterials under different loading conditions. These models help in designing materials with desired mechanical properties and optimizing their performance.Mathematical models also aid in the design and optimization of nanoscale devices such as sensors, transistors, and solar cells. By simulating device behavior using mathematical models, researchers can optimize device parameters to achieve desired performance characteristics.

Advances in Experimental Philosophy of Medicine

Ingram 出版
2023/10/07 出版

This open access collection brings together a team of leading scholars and rising stars to consider what experimental philosophy of medicine is and can be. While experimental philosophy of science is an established field, attempts to tackle issues in philosophy of medicine from an experimental angle are still surprisingly scarce. A team of interdisciplinary scholars demonstrate how we can make progress by integrating a variety of methods from experimental philosophy, including experiments, sociological surveys, simulations, as well as history and philosophy of science, in order to yield meaningful results about the core questions in medicine. They focus on concepts central to philosophy of medicine and medical practice, such as death, pain, disease and disorder, advance directives, medical explanation, disability and informed consent. Presenting empirical findings and providing a crucial foundation for future work in this dynamic field, this collection explores new ways for philosophers to cooperate with scientists and reveals the value of these collaborations for both philosophy and medicine. The eBook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by the European Research Council Starting Grant.

Science V. Story

Ingram 出版
2023/10/06 出版

Uncovering common threads across types of science skepticism to show why these controversial narratives stick and how we can more effectively counter them through storytelling Science v. Story analyzes four scientific controversies--climate change, evolution, vaccination, and COVID-19--through the lens of storytelling. Instead of viewing stories as adversaries to scientific practices, Emma Frances Bloomfield demonstrates how storytelling is integral to science communication. Drawing from narrative theory and rhetorical studies, Science v. Story examines scientific stories and rival stories, including disingenuous rival stories that undermine scientific conclusions and productive rival stories that work to make science more inclusive. Science v. Story offers two tools to evaluate and build stories: narrative webs and narrative constellations. These visual mapping tools chart the features of a story (i.e., characters, action, sequence, scope, storyteller, and content) to locate opportunities for audience engagement. Bloomfield ultimately argues that we can strengthen science communication by incorporating storytelling in critical ways that are attentive to audience and context.

The Prior Unity of Science and Spirit

Ingram 出版
2023/10/03 出版

A brilliant contribution to the advance of both Science and Philosophy-and a more profound spirituality. [Dr. Ervin Laszlo] We are given a creative, bedazzling contemplation...May all who come be enriched by this festive offering. [Lama Harvey Aronson; Lama Anne C. Klein] This book is a remarkable ecumenical accomplishment that documents the unity of Science and Spirit. "Such a rapprochement of the first principles of objective Science as it naturally arises in its perfectly subjective all-subsuming Spirit ground is required if we are to understand the arising new noetic knowledge paradigm in matter, mind, and spirit that is now abroad in our 21st century human cognosphere." Author of six books and over one hundred articles and essays (davidpaulboaz.org) religious studies scholar and Buddhist practitioner Dr. David Paul Boaz has once again contributed substantially to the emerging discipline of Science and Spirit. Continuing the dialogue of his prodigious The Noetic Revolution, engage the 'primordial love-wisdom mind' of the wisdom traditions of humankind in a penetrating synthesis of Eastern wisdom and Western physics. East meets West as ancient highest Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Dzogchen teaching engages modern quantum physics. The quality of the author's non-mathematical presentation of quantum physics is very high and complete, yet readily understandable. His penetrating insight into Buddhist philosophy and practice is exemplary. With skillful precision and refreshing humor he offers a unique exploration of "our human consciousness as it naturally arises in its all embracing formless, timeless, selfless primordial Spirit ground-bright indwelling Presence of That." Dr. Boaz here completes his breakthrough integral Noetic Quantum Ontology that unifies Buddhist boundless emptiness and 'nonlocal entangled' quantum emptiness. At last, a viable foundational interpretation of quantum mechanics! We have here a radically new "post-empirical" ontology that facilitates the unification of Einstein's gravity equations with quantum field theory-physic's much desired Quantum Gravity Theory. Engage in this exceptional book such diverse themes as "The Quantum in Spirit"; "Primordial Consciousness: Dzogchen Panpsychism"; "Your Primordial Wisdom Mind"; "Consciousness: Relative Human and Nondual Ultimate"; "G繹del and Paraconsistent Logical Systems"; "Happiness Arises From Your Present Mind state";"Mindfulness Meditation"; "The Secret of Human Happiness"; "The Unified Quantum Vacuum"; and so much more.

Scientific Progress

Ingram 出版
2023/09/28 出版

What constitutes cognitive scientific progress? This Element begins with an extensive survey of the contemporary debate on how to answer this question. It provides a blow-by-blow critical summary of the key literature on the issue over the past fifteen years, covering the central positions and arguments therein. It also draws upon older literature, where appropriate, to inform the treatment. The Element then enters novel territory by considering meta-normative issues concerning scientific progress. It focuses on how the standards involved in assessing progress arise. Does science have aims, which determine what counts as progress, as many authors assume? If so, what is it to be an aim of science? And how does one identify such things? If not, how do normative standards arise? After arguing that science does not have overarching aims, the Element proposes that the standards are ultimately subjective.
