M-STATISTICS A comprehensive resource providing new statistical methodologies and demonstrating how new approaches work for applications M-statistics introduces a new approach to statistical inference, redesigning the fundamentals of statistics, and improving on the classical methods we already use. This book targets exact optimal statistical inference for a small sample under one methodological umbrella. Two competing approaches are offered: maximum concentration (MC) and mode (MO) statistics combined under one methodological umbrella, which is why the symbolic equation M=MC+MO. M-statistics defines an estimator as the limit point of the MC or MO exact optimal confidence interval when the confidence level approaches zero, the MC and MO estimator, respectively. Neither mean nor variance plays a role in M-statistics theory. Novel statistical methodologies in the form of double-sided unbiased and short confidence intervals and tests apply to major statistical parameters: Exact statistical inference for small sample sizes is illustrated with effect size and coefficient of variation, the rate parameter of the Pareto distribution, two-sample statistical inference for normal variance, and the rate of exponential distributions. M-statistics is illustrated with discrete, binomial, and Poisson distributions. Novel estimators eliminate paradoxes with the classic unbiased estimators when the outcome is zero. Exact optimal statistical inference applies to correlation analysis including Pearson correlation, squared correlation coefficient, and coefficient of determination. New MC and MO estimators along with optimal statistical tests, accompanied by respective power functions, are developed. M-statistics is extended to the multidimensional parameter and illustrated with the simultaneous statistical inference for the mean and standard deviation, shape parameters of the beta distribution, the two-sample binomial distribution, and finally, nonlinear regression. Our new developments are accompanied by respective algorithms and R codes, available at GitHub, and as such readily available for applications. M-statistics is suitable for professionals and students alike. It is highly useful for theoretical statisticians and teachers, researchers, and data science analysts as an alternative to classical and approximate statistical inference.

Phenotropic Interaction
Successful interaction between humans and artificial systems allows for combining the advantages of all actors in solving problems. However, interaction is often demanding for people, as it builds on artificial concepts, such as strict protocols. This book presents the new paradigm of 'phenotropic' interaction, which aims to improve the naturalness of the interaction thanks to bio-inspired approaches. These include methods for understanding and reasoning with human perceptions expressed as natural language, fundamental to support the artificial system to better understand people's real desires and needs. Methods for improving the theories of computing with words and perceptions are developed in this book and applied to concrete use cases in prototypes enhancing the exchange of information with virtual assistants and smart city ecosystems. The presented use cases serve not only as examples of the application of the phenotropic interaction principles but also to verify their effective impact on communication.

Becoming a Software Company
There is a call to action reverberating in company boardrooms, earnings calls, technology conferences, and IT departments: every company should be a software company. The call makes intuitive sense. Software, when done right, creates infinite business leverage. It is not a coincidence that 7 out of 10 largest companies in the world are software companies. But how does a company become a software company? This book will help enterprises transform into a software company. The software-driven future that Marc Andreessen predicted in his now-famous 2011 essay is here but unevenly distributed. While enterprises, and teams within, grasp the software technologies, they lack the context to leverage them -- much less understand the fundamental principles that drive the business value from software: What is the real essence of the software-based transformation? If every enterprise is implementing the same technologies, what is the sourceof differentiation? How do you manage the inherent complexity of software such that it doesn't destroy software's value? How do you build and nurture talent so that it is empowered to create the best solutions for your customers' problems? This book will answer all of that and more. The boundary between enterprise and consumer software is rapidly blurring. IEEE reports that 40% of the cost of a new car comes from software . Elsewhere, software is becoming synonymous with medical devices and therapeutics . FinTech and EdTech trends are primarily about personalization through software at an internet-scale. The struggling enterprises are up against it. They have no choice but to figure out how to ship consumer-grade software. It is an existential problem for them. This book compiles the timeless principles of building good software, yet often disregarded while building and deploying software products for enterprises. What You'll LearnLeverage people to build creative software solutionsManage development complexity so that we keep software focused on user problemsUnderstand software technology as a means of producing valueWho This Book Is ForEnterprise Executive Management, Enterprise IT Management Professionals, Software Practitioners within Enterprise

Hacking SaaS
Perpetual software licensing is dead. In fact, today's college graduates are unlikely to encounter it in their careers. That's because software as a Service, or SaaS, provides the necessary customer insight companies need to innovate better and faster than their competitors-and it's now the dominant business model for nascent and legacy software companies alike. The only problem? SaaS's rapid rise resulted in a fragmented understanding of best practices for this dynamic, powerful business model. Eric Mersch is here to change that. Informative, in-depth, and inclusive, Hacking SaaS leverages Eric's twenty-plus years of executive finance experience to become the definitive book on managing SaaS business models. Eric's three-part compendium clarifies SaaS's components and their relationship to financial metrics while empowering readers to unlock the power of SaaS, create strong data-driven cultures in their companies, and fortify business performance.
Essential Guide to Renderman(r) Shading Plugin Development
Understand the fundamentals of Bxdf plugins for RenderMan(R) 21+, both the technical details and API architecture. The main goal of the book is to enable technical artists, hobbyists, and students in using the noncommercial (NCR), free RenderMan(R) edition. RenderMan(R) is an industry standard for rendering software. It has been used for every Pixar film to date and numerous other projects. RenderMan(R) 21, and all subsequent versions, use Monte Carlo path tracing. This change has necessitated the use of C++ plugins in place of the RenderMan Shader Language (RSL). Because of this, writing Bxdfs now requires knowledge of Monte Carlo integration, probability density functions, and the RenderMan(R) C++ API. Essential Guide to RenderMan(R) Shading Plugin Development specifically addresses writing RenderMan(R) C++ materials. It explores the mathematical models of representative Bxdfs while drawing parallels, when helpful, to earlier RSL implementations. It also includes an overview of Integrators, providing further context for modern RenderMan(R) programmable shading. What You Will LearnC++ development for BxdfsFundamentals of the rendering equationMonte Carlo integration Who Is This Book ForBeginner plugin writers for RenderMan(R), such as technical artists, students, or hobbyists who may already have experience with RSL or another shader language. More experienced C++ developers without knowledge of RenderMan(R) or Monte Carlo path tracing will benefit from the content as well. While some prior experience in computer graphics is helpful, the book provides background and references for further study.

The Structure of Game Design
The Structure of Game Design is designed to help aspiring and existing game designers turn their ideas into working games. Creating a game involves understanding the core foundational elements of all types of games from paper-based games to the latest video games. By understanding how these core principles work in all types of games, you can apply these same principles to design your own game. Games are about goals, structure, play and fun. While everyone will always have their own idea of what might be "fun", any game designer can maximize player enjoyment through meaningful choices that offer various risks and rewards. Such challenges, combined with rules and limitations, force players to overcome obstacles and problems using a variety of skills including dexterity, puzzle solving, intelligence, and strategy. Essentially games allow players to venture forth into new worlds and overcome problems in a safe but exciting environment that allows them to triumph in the end. Just as playing games have proven popular around the world to all ages, genders, and cultures, so has game designing proven equally popular. Games can challenge players to make the best move, solve puzzles, engage in combat, manage resources, and tell stories. By understanding how randomness, psychology, and balance can change the way games play, readers can decide what game elements are best for their own game creation. Whether your goal is to make money, learn something new, make a social statement, improve on an existing game idea, or challenge your artistic, programming, or design skills, game design can be just as much fun as game playing. By knowing the parts of a game, how they work, how they interact, and why they're fun, you can use your knowledge to turn any idea into a game that others can play and enjoy.
