Memes in Digital Culture
Taking "Gangnam Style" seriously: what Internet memes can tell us about digital culture. In December 2012, the exuberant video "Gangnam Style" became the first YouTube clip to be viewed more than one billion times. Thousands of its viewers responded by creating and posting their own variations of the video--"Mitt Romney Style," "NASA Johnson Style," "Egyptian Style," and many others. "Gangnam Style" (and its attendant parodies, imitations, and derivations) is one of the most famous examples of an Internet meme: a piece of digital content that spreads quickly around the web in various iterations and becomes a shared cultural experience. In this book, Limor Shifman investigates Internet memes and what they tell us about digital culture. Shifman discusses a series of well-known Internet memes--including "Leave Britney Alone," the pepper-spraying cop, LOLCats, Scumbag Steve, and Occupy Wall Street's "We Are the 99 Percent." She offers a novel definition of Internet memes: digital content units with common characteristics, created with awareness of each other, and circulated, imitated, and transformed via the Internet by many users. She differentiates memes from virals; analyzes what makes memes and virals successful; describes popular meme genres; discusses memes as new modes of political participation in democratic and nondemocratic regimes; and examines memes as agents of globalization. Memes, Shifman argues, encapsulate some of the most fundamental aspects of the Internet in general and of the participatory Web 2.0 culture in particular. Internet memes may be entertaining, but in this book Limor Shifman makes a compelling argument for taking them seriously.

Flash Video Creativity
by Bruce Herbert and Diana Johnson ofSorenson Media Creative boundaries are being blown apart as Macromedia Flash MX ushers in a new era of moving images on the Internet. At its launch, analysts predicted that the Flash Player would transform itself from being a lightweight animation tool" to "the de facto technology for simple web interactivity5* (Randy Souza, Forrester). Since then though, Flash developers combining vector animation and video have proven that it's capable of much, much more than "simple web interactivity". We're still just beginning to scratch the surface of the possibilities it opens up to us, but already it looks like Flash MX is becoming the key technology for pushing video creativity on the Web to a new whole level. Understandably, many people look at Flash as just another way to deliver video on the Web, one more program for showing movies on your desktop. Well, it can certainly do that - but there's a whole lot more it can do besides! You can use ActionScript to add custom controls, determine a video playback sequence, or mask your video with a custom shape. You can use layering to create special effects, design custom templates for e-learning applications, and use lightweight video streams along with Flash animation in rich media e-mail campaigns.

Infoglut
Today, more mediated information is available to more people than at any other time in human history. New and revitalized sense-making strategies multiply in response to the challenges of "cutting through the clutter" of competing narratives and taming the avalanche of information. Data miners, "sentiment analysts," and decision markets offer to help bodies of data "speak for themselves"-making sense of their own patterns so we don't have to. Neuromarketers and body language experts promise to peer behind people's words to see what their brains are really thinking and feeling. New forms of information processing promise to displace the need for expertise and even comprehension-at least for those with access to the data. Infoglut explores the connections between these wide-ranging sense-making strategies for an era of information overload and "big data," and the new forms of control they enable. Andrejevic critiques the popular embrace of deconstructive debunkery, calling into question the post-truth, post-narrative, and post-comprehension politics it underwrites, and tracing a way beyond them.

Beginning Silverlight 2
Silverlight is one of the biggest new technologies to be released by Microsoft in recent years. Interest in it amongst the Microsoft development community has been huge, dwarfing even that show for ASP.NET AJAX. A partially complete version of Silverlight (version 1.0) was released earlier this year without support for the .NET framework. A new version with full .NET support is being released early in 2008 and it is this complete version that is targeted in this book. The book takes readers on a guided tour of all the new tools that are available to create Silverlight applications, from Expression Design and Expression Blend through to Visual Studio 2008. The book explains how each of the tools performs it's part of the job of putting together well-constructed Silverlight applications and demonstrates this with a series of straight-forward examples that illustrate how developers and designers can perform their roles in harmony.
Silverlight 2 Recipes
Microsoft Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in like Flash that delivers rich interactive applications for the Web. Silverlight offers a flexible programming model that supports a number of different programming languages and techniques (making it cross-platform) and all major browsers (cross-browser support). This book will leverage our existing success in the ASP.NET market and our investment in several Silverlight 1.1 titles. These titles were brought to market immediately surrounding the actual Silverlight 1.1 RTM to target developers interested in practical, ready-to-use code pieces. Readers enjoy these "cut-and-paste" ready solutions that give them lots of bang for their buck. Additionally, there doesn't appear to be a competitive recipe-style book announced as of this writing.
