Advances in Micro and Nano Manufacturing

Micro- and nanomanufacturing technologies have been researched and developed in the industrial environment with the goal of supporting product miniaturization and the integration of new functionalities. The technological development of new materials and processing methods needs to be supported by predictive models which can simulate the interactions between materials, process states, and product properties. In comparison with the conventional manufacturing scale, micro- and nanoscale technologies require the study of different mechanical, thermal, and fluid dynamics, phenomena which need to be assessed and modeled.This Special Issue is dedicated to advances in the modeling of micro- and nanomanufacturing processes. The development of new models, validation of state-of-the-art modeling strategies, and approaches to material model calibration are presented. The goal is to provide state-of-the-art examples of the use of modeling and simulation in micro- and nanomanufacturing processes, promoting the diffusion and development of these technologies.

Wastewater Treatment

This book examines the state-of-the-art water and wastewater treatment methods that can be applied to develop a sustainable treatment technique in the future. Of the several high-quality articles submitted, twelve were published after the peer-review process, with an acceptance rate of 59 percent.In the first section of this book, the articles include the occurrence and removal of emerging contaminants in water bodies. Moreover, the presence of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in water sources is discussed in detail. Subsequently, the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), and dye with different physicochemical methods is investigated. In another section of this book, the removal of ammonia with anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is studied. Additionally, the elimination of heavy metals using the adsorption process, as an effective method, is discussed. Moreover, the performance of membrane bioreactors in the elimination of pollutants from landfill leachate is investigated in another article in this book. In addition to this, green and sustainable wastewater technologies (GSWTs) have recently attracted the attention of researchers. Therefore, nanoremediation and microalgae-based systems are discussed as the GSWTs.

Marine Power Systems

Marine power systems have been designed to be a safer alternative to stationary plants in order to adhere to the regulations of classification societies. Marine steam boilers recently achieved 10 MPa pressure, in comparison to stationary plants, where a typical boiler pressure of 17 MPa was the standard for years. The latest land-based, ultra-supercritical steam boilers reach 25 MPa pressure and 620 簞C temperatures, which increases plant efficiency and reduces fuel consumption. There is little chance that such a plant concept could be applied to ships. The reliability of marine power systems has to be higher due to the lack of available spare parts and services that are available for shore power systems. Some systems are still very expensive and are not able to be widely utilized for commercial merchant fleets such as COGAS, mainly due to the high cost of gas turbines. Submarine vehicles are also part of marine power systems, which have to be reliable and accurate in their operation due to their distant control centers. Materials that are used in marine environments are prone to faster corrosive wear, so special care also should be taken in this regard. The main aim of this Special Issue is to discuss the options and possibilities of utilizing energy in a more economical way, taking into account the reliability of such a system in operation.

Wave Interactions with Coastal Structures

Even though much research related to wave-structure interactions has been carried out, it remains one of the most important and challenging topics in the field of coastal engineering. The recent publications in the Special Issue "Wave Interactions with Coastal Structures" in the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering include a wide range of research, including theoretical/mathematical, experimental, and numerical work related to the interaction between sea waves and coastal structures. These publications address conventional coastal hard structures in deep water zones as well as those located in shallow water zones, such as wave overtopping over shallow foreshores with apartment buildings on dikes. The research findings presented help to improve our knowledge of hydrodynamic processes, and the new approaches and developments presented here will be good benchmarks for future work.

Bioenergy is renewable energy obtained from biomass-any organic material that has stored sunlight in the form of chemical energy. Biogas is among the biofuels that can be obtained from biomass resources, including biodegradable wastes like manure, sewage sludge, the organic fraction of municipal solid wastes, slaughterhouse waste, crop residues, and more recently lignocellulosic biomass and algae. Within the framework of the circular economy, biogas production from biodegradable waste is particularly interesting, as it helps to save resources while reducing environmental pollution. Besides, lignocellulosic biomass and algae do not compete for arable land with food crops (in contrast with energy crops). Hence, they constitute a novel source of biomass for bioenergy.Biogas plants may involve both high-tech and low-tech digesters, ranging from industrial-scale plants to small-scale farms and even households. They pose an alternative for decentralized bioenergy production in rural areas. Indeed, the biogas produced can be used in heaters, engines, combined heat and power units, and even cookstoves at the household level. Notwithstanding, digesters are considered to be a sustainable technology that can improve the living conditions of farmers by covering energy needs and boosting nutrient recycling. Thanks to their technical, socio-economic, and environmental benefits, rural biogas plants have been spreading around the world since the 1970s, with a large focus on farm-based systems and households. However, several challenges still need to be overcome in order to improve the technology and financial viability.

In 1899, the first forest reserve in Nigeria named Gambari Forest Reserve was constituted and located in the Oyo State. The study was carried out to analyse marketing policies for Agroforestry product development in three purposively selected Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Akinyele, Oluyole and Ogbomosho in Oyo State, Nigeria. In 1985, Abu found out that agroforestry practice in Gambari forest reserve Area of Oyo State Nigeria provided an annual income of N941.55 per farm. Although, conflicts do come between cultivating trees and raising agricultural crops, many agroforestry system allow farmers to integrate trees in to their farming systems and in some cases the trees increase overall farm productivity. But regrettably economic policy still discriminates seriously against agriculture and forestry in most developing countries by shifting the domestic terms of trade against the sector. What this does is to cause farmers and policy makers a like to undervalue the land and other natural resources. It is no wonder, then, that farmers do not attempt to develop their productive potential instead set out to mine them and move on (shifting cultivation). Similarly, government interventions in provision of agroforestry products negates market emergence: the consequences of these policies should be high on our research agenda. It was not until the late 1990 that the Government farmer's orgnisation and private sector together established a new quality modus operandi. Time-Frequency Analysis of Electroencephalograph (EEG) for Feature Optimization

Document from the year 2017 in the subject Medicine - Biomedical Engineering, grade: 3.0, language: English, abstract: Electroencephalograph (EEG) has been widely used for BCI applications due to its non-invasiveness, ease of implementation, and cost-efficiency. The collected EEG signal is non-stationary and has task-related information buried in the frequency and temporal domains. In this book, we focused on developing time-frequency decomposition methods for improving the feature extraction module in BCI systems. The obtained features are then optimized by identifying subject-specific reactive band and employing evolutionary algorithm-based methods for optimizing the obtained features, improving the BCI systems' performance. A signal model named as band-limited multiple Fourier linear combiner (BMFLC) is employed to model the non-stationarity in the EEG signal for feature extraction. The non-stationary amplitude oscillation is presented as adaptive weights in the model and estimated with various adaptive filters such as least-mean square (LMS), Kalman filter (KF), or Kalman Smoother (KS). The estimated coefficients serve as features for classification. Our results suggest that the BMFLC-LMS, BMFLC-KF, and BMFLC-KS are all sufficient in modeling EEG signal in the band with average estimation accuracies of 93%, 99%, and 98%, respectively. We modelled motion-induced EEG signal in frequency domain. We found that most subjects present a subject- specific reactive band during motion tasks. We then constructed features for a classifier that used only the frequency information in the subject-specific reactive band. As a result, the classification accuracy of the BCI system is improved compared to the system which uses the complete band information. Features obtained from multiple EEG channels need to be optimized to enhance the performance of the BCI systems. It includes the project organization structure, techniques, roles and responsibilities associated to the management activities that will be performed. It also describes how the proposed project will be controlled. Additionally, the report explains management activities intended to ensure that processes and procedures are defined, and their execution will be continuously monitored, corrected if necessary and implemented, based on a common standard. The main sections of the Chad-Cameroon upgrade will be the construction of a pipeline between Kom矇 and Dompla to boost the capacity of the Doba-Kom矇-Belabo-Dompla (Chad-Cameroon) pipeline, along with new and/or improved gas terminals and compressor stations together with installation of cathodic protection and a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) telecommunications monitoring system. This report provides front-end loading engineering services for the development of an existing pipeline to transport crude oil between a refinery storage facility and a barge loading facility. This upgrade will allow bidirectional flow in the pipeline and boost flow rate capacity. The Chad- Cameroon upgrade plan includes integrating pipeline and storage terminal improvements.

Flash Memory Devices

Flash memory devices have represented a breakthrough in storage since their inception in the mid-1980s, and innovation is still ongoing. The peculiarity of such technology is an inherent flexibility in terms of performance and integration density according to the architecture devised for integration. The NOR Flash technology is still the workhorse of many code storage applications in the embedded world, ranging from microcontrollers for automotive environment to IoT smart devices. Their usage is also forecasted to be fundamental in emerging AI edge scenario. On the contrary, when massive data storage is required, NAND Flash memories are necessary to have in a system. You can find NAND Flash in USB sticks, cards, but most of all in Solid-State Drives (SSDs). Since SSDs are extremely demanding in terms of storage capacity, they fueled a new wave of innovation, namely the 3D architecture. Today "3D" means that multiple layers of memory cells are manufactured within the same piece of silicon, easily reaching a terabit capacity. So far, Flash architectures have always been based on "floating gate," where the information is stored by injecting electrons in a piece of polysilicon surrounded by oxide. On the contrary, emerging concepts are based on "charge trap" cells. In summary, flash memory devices represent the largest landscape of storage devices, and we expect more advancements in the coming years. This will require a lot of innovation in process technology, materials, circuit design, flash management algorithms, Error Correction Code and, finally, system co-design for new applications such as AI and security enforcement.

The integration of logic operations into memory units (Logic-in-Memory), as well as memory elements into logic circuits (Nonvolatile Logic), promises to fulfill this request by combining high-speed with low-power operation. Ferroelectric field-effect transistors (FeFETs) based on hafnium oxide prove to be auspicious candidates for the memory elements in applications of that kind, as those nonvolatile memory elements are CMOS-compatible and likewise scalable. This work presents implementations that merge logic and memory by exploiting the natural capability of the FeFET to combine logic functionality (transistor) and memory ability (nonvolatility).

Catalysts and Processes for H2S Conversion to Sulfur

Today, more stringent regulations on SOx emissions and growing environmental concerns have led to considerable attention on sulfur recovery from hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Hydrogen sulfide is commonly found in raw natural gas and biogas, even if a great amount is obtained through sweetening of sour natural gas and hydrodesulphurization of light hydrocarbons. It is highly toxic, extremely corrosive and flammable, and for these reasons, its elimination is necessary prior to emission in atmosphere. There are different technologies for the removal of H2S, the drawbacks of which are the high costs and limited H2S conversion efficiency. The main focus of this Special Issue will be on catalytic oxidation processes, but the issue is devoted to the development of catalysts able to maximize H2S conversion to sulfur minimizing SO2 formation, pursuing the goal of "zero SO2 emission".This Special Issue is particularly devoted to the preparation of novel powdered/structured supported catalysts and their physical-chemical characterization, the study of the aspects concerning stability and reusability, as well as the phenomena that could underlie the deactivation of the catalyst. This Special Issue comprises seven articles, one communication, and one review regarding the desulfurization of sour gases and fuel oil, as well as the synthesis of novel adsorbents and catalysts for H2S abatement. In the following, a brief description of the papers included in this issue is provided to serve as an outline to encourage further reading.

Its importance has been noted in a wide variety of applications, An efficient localization system must localize the robot precisely. In this book, the localization procedure and the structure of the proposed robot are explained. Pairs of low-cost sensors are used to build the suggested system. The light-dependent resistor (LDR) sensors are equipped with the robot base and the light-emitting diodes (LED) sensors are prepared for the environment as a grid of various sizes. The location of each LED in the environment is known since they are connected as a grid and each LED in the grid is identified. The modified Binary search algorithm is used to control the turning on the lights of the white-LEDs array to decrease the localized time. The robot localization is accomplished by utilizing the guideline of finding the focal point of a circle with three knowing focuses or the new strategy for finding the focal point of a circle with two knowing focuses and the radius of the circle.

Pumping Capacity Upgrade for Chad-Cameroon Pipeline. Second-Generation Drag Reduction Agent (DRA) Technology

Project Report from the year 2021 in the subject Engineering - System Science, grade: 3.9, Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, language: English, abstract: This paper examines the idea of increasing the pumping capacity of the Chad-Cameroon pipeline system by using second-generation drag reduction agent (DRA) technology. Evidence shows that it is technologically feasible to upgrade the pipeline system to a capacity of 500,000 barrels per day (bpd) for the cost of $364.4 million. This capacity assumes the use of both the TOTCO and COTCO pipelines, the report also presents several lower capacities, and lower cost options. The upgrades will take at least 42 months to install and commission. The pipeline upgrade has numerous important strategic benefits that can help enhance the Chad-Cameroon pipeline's reputation as a more stable, and reliable oil producer in the world market. In total, the Project would consist of approximately 664 miles of new, 36-inch diameter pipeline within the Chad and Cameroon. The proposed Project would have an initial capacity to deliver up to 500,000 barrels per day (bpd) of Doba's oil field from the proposed Kom矇 crossing to existing oil terminals in Dompla and Belabo. Existing binding commitments for the Project amount to 250,000 bpd of crude oil and as demand for Chad-Cameroon pipeline oil increases, the pipeline would increase its load, up to its initial capacity of 500,000 bpd. The Project could ultimately transport up to 700,000 bpd of crude oil through the proposed pipeline upgrade by adding additional pumping capacity if warranted by future market demand. The Project requires 18 new pump stations, 36 intermediate mainline valves (MLVs) of which 24 are check valves located downstream of major river crossings, approximately 50 permanent access roads and approximately 30 temporary access roads, one tank farm and two crude oil delivery sites.

To minimize climate change impacts on animal(cattle), the climate adaptation and mitigation measures such as diversification of animals (within species), using different crop varieties, and shifting to mixed crop-livestock systems, improving productive and reproductive indexes (reducing age on slaughter, age at first calving and calving interval), increasing the longevity of reproductive cows; improving the genetic merit, improving quality and type of feed and provide ventilation, water, and shading seem to be the most promising adaptation and mitigation measures.
