Jamming and Rheology
The subject of jamming and rheology is a broad and interdisciplinary one that is generating increasing interest. This book deals with one of the oldest unsolved problems in condensed matter physics - that of the nature of glass transition in supercooled liquids. Jamming and Rheology is a collection of reprinted articles from several fields, ranging from structural glasses to foams and granular materials.Glassy relaxation and constrained dynamics (jamming) occur at all scales, from microscopic to macroscopic - in the glass transition of supercooled liquids, in fluids confined to thin films, in the structural arrest of particles such as granular materials, and in foams which must be driven by an applied stress in order to flow. Because jamming occurs at the transition between where a flow occurs and where motion stops, it is hoped that there may be a universal feature that describes this transition in all systems. This volume shows that the systems described above share many common phenomenological features, and covers work done by a wide range of scientists and technologists working in areas from physics to chemistry to chemical and mechanical engineering.

Salt Damage in Ceramic Brick Masonry
This book discusses the effects of soluble mineral salts on ceramic brick masonry walls in Petrolina, a city in Pernambuco, Brazil, located 780 km from the ocean. To shed light on this phenomenon, the authors mapped the pathologies originating from the effects of soluble mineral salts and installed wells to monitor the underground water supply at five locations in the city where the phenomenon most frequently occurs. Further, they analyzed samples of soil, groundwater, and bricks affected by the phenomenon and measured levels of chloride in the atmosphere at these sites. The results obtained indicate that the pathological manifestations are influenced by the high levels of soluble salts observed in the soil and groundwater samples collected, and are not affected by chloride in the atmosphere.

Temperature-Dependent Deformation and Fracture Behavior of a Talcum-Filled Co-Polymer
David Degenhardt develops an elasto-viscoplastic material model in order to predict the temperature and strain rate-dependent deformation and fracture behavior of thermoplastic polymers. The model bases on three supporting ambient temperatures, where a thermoplastic polymer has been characterized profoundly at the stress states 1) uni-axial tension and compression, 2) bi-axial tension and 3) shear. The core of the material model builds a pressure-dependent yield function with a non-associated flow rule. Further, it contains an analytical hardening law and a strain rate-dependent fracture criterion. The model is validated with components subjected to impact loading at different ambient temperatures. The comparison of the simulation and the experiments shows that stiffness, hardening, fractures strain as well as thicknesses can be well captured.About the Author: David Degenhardt is a calculation engineer in the chassis development department of a German automobile manufacturer and earned his doctorate while working at the Technische Universit瓣t Carolo-Wilhelmina zu Braunschweig, Germany.

The Chemistry of Powder and Explosives
The present volume contains in one binding the whole contents of Volume I, first published in May, 1941, and the whole contents of Volume II which was published in March, 1943. The book was primarily for chemists. The writing of it was commenced in order that a textbook might be available for the use of students in the course in powder and explosives which the author gave for about twenty years (nearly every year since the first World War) to fourth-year and graduate students of chemistry and of chemical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.... The aim of the book has been too described as clearly and interestingly as possible and as fully as seemed profitable the modes of behavior, both physical and chemical, of explosive substances, whether these modes find practical application or not. Historical material has been included where it was thought that it contributed to this end, and has not been included elsewhere or for any other reason. It is a fact that a knowledge of the history of ideas, of persons, or of things produces something of the same sympathetic understanding of them that living with them and working with them does.
