Densification Impact on Raw, Chemically and Thermally Pretreated Biomass: Physical Properties and Biofuels Production
First-generation ethanol plants did not have many operational challenges as the feedstocks (e.g., corn) used for fuel production are dense, stable, storable, and shippable commodity-type products with fewer conversion challenges. These feedstock properties led the first-generation large-scale biorefineries to grow exponentially. In the second-generation biofuels, the feedstocks used are agricultural and forest residues, dedicated energy crops, industrial wastes, and municipal solid waste. When the industry tested these feedstocks for biofuel production, they faced flowability, storage, transportation, and conversion issues. One way to overcome some of the feeding, handling, transportation, and variable moisture challenges is to densify the biomass. Pellet mills and briquette presses are commonly used to produce densified products. The densified products have uniform size, shape, higher bulk density, and better downstream conversion performance. Also, the densified products are aerobically stable and can be stored for longer durations without any loss in quality.This book's focus is on understanding how the densification process variables, biomass types and their blends, mechanical preprocessing, and thermal and chemical pretreatment methods impact the quality of the densified products produced for biofuel production. Finally, the book also explores the conversion performance of densified biomass for biofuel production.

A Numerical Tool for the Analysis of Bioinspired Aquatic Locomotion
This book presents a novel method for the numerical simulation of swimming animals. It includes a review of the hydrodynamics of swimming, a description of the CFD model adopted, and a description of the results obtained by applying this model to the cownose ray. This method is developed for the open-source software OpenFOAM and relies on an overset mesh. A custom library is added to the solver to include the equations of the kinematics of the animal under investigation, combining the deformation of the fish fins with the computed displacement and rotation of the animal's body. The presented method helps investigate the dynamics of any animal moving in a fluid, provided that its kinematics is known, and in this work, it is applied to investigate the hydrodynamics of a cownose ray. This book is intended for researchers and engineers who aim to deeply understand the hydrodynamics of fish swimming and to design bioinspired autonomous underwater vehicles or novel propulsion systems.

Integrated Drainage Systems Planning and Design for Municipal Engineers
Urban water management has to take an integrated approach that prioritizes sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) over gray infrastructure. This book elaborates on the planning and evaluation of pipework drainage systems with a focus on modern-day constraints to deliver a solution that favors sustainability as the overarching goal. The bill from wind and sun
The "energy transition" is accompanied by the slogan "Wind and sun don't send a bill". Fine - the coal seam and the oil well don't send a bill either. The bill is sent by the various devices used to convert the energy, which is initially either extracted as chemically bound energy carriers or converted from flow or radiation energy to, for example, electrical energy. Since energy is not "renewed" but can only ever be converted from one form to another, this is precisely what the costs - and losses - are for. So how high are these costs for the production of the PV and wind power plants? How can we make a usable constant power supply out of their extremely unsteady electricity? What are the costs of the necessary storage facilities, what resources have to be dug up all over the world for this purpose, what are the costs and are the world reserves of the required rare and expensive elements sufficient at all for this purpose? How much does it cost to extract, process and transport them, and what pollutants are emitted in the process? What damage will occur at the installation site for people, animals and plants? Will the weather and local climate be affected? Is it worthwhile to import the "green electricity"? So what is the bottom line of the CO2 and actual pollutant balance of energy production by "renewables", what price per kWh has to be calculated - undistorted by subsidies and certificates? How many wind turbines and how many km簡 of PV modules, how many additional batteries or electrolysis plants have to be installed in the country in the end, in order to convert e.g. the complete electric power supply? The answer to these questions is sobering to shocking and will hopefully inspire some to rethink - at least those who mean well with this planet.
