Raincoast Chronicles 25

Ingram 出版
2025/07/09 出版

This 25th edition of Raincoast Chronicles intertwines Alan Haig-Brown's experiences of his formative years as a deckhand on a We Wai Kai seiner with the historical and cultural context of BC's commercial fishing industry. In Raincoast Chronicles 25, Haig-Brown recounts his formative years as a deckhand in the 1960s and early '70s on a fishing boat run by the We Wai Kai family he married into as a teenager. The history of commercial fishing and of British Columbia itself, in all its twisting relations with Indigenous peoples, is mirrored in Haig-Brown's vivid account of life aboard, where "there are no typical days" despite the tightly choreographed tasks and immense local knowledge required by this ever-risky business. Recalling dancing fingers deftly untangling purse seine nets, the delicious salmon stews and huckleberry pies Mitzi Assu whipped up from a cramped galley, and the crew's navigation skills in facing dangerous tide rips, Haig-Brown beautifully captures the daily rhythms, challenges, and camaraderie of life on the fishing boat from a decade spent immersed in the traditions of the We Wai Kai people under the remarkable skipper Herb Assu. It was the Assu family that gave Haig-Brown the experience that has led him to understand the harmony and sustainability of the traditional Indigenous approach to the environment. Now an experienced international marine journalist, Haig-Brown adds historical context to the narrative, providing a nuanced view of the interplay between Indigenous communities and the commercial fishing industry. Illustrated with black and white photographs, mostly by Vicki Assu, his wife at the time, this account not only portrays a young man's journey but also serves as a tribute to the enduring spirit and resilience of the We Wai Kai family and their deep connection to the coastal waters of British Columbia.

Preferred Plants and Nectar Collecting Times for Honey Production

Ingram 出版
2025/06/28 出版

This book addresses three important questions for South Carolina beekeepers - which plants are bees in South Carolina using for nectar forage, when do those plants bloom, and how can understanding nectar foraging habits inform beekeepers as they work to gather specific types of premium honey? In 2021, the South Carolina Beekeeper's Association, led by David MacFawn, designed and implemented a statewide pollen study, the first in any state in over fifty years, to answer these questions. Informed by data gathered from 19 apiaries across the state, this book contains the results of that study, including large-scale melissopalynological analyses of collected pollens, weekly dynamics of seasonal nectar flows broken down by ecoregion, and recommendations for how beekeepers can implement this information into yearly honey production planning. As the preeminent reference work for beekeeping in South Carolina, this book will also prove valuable to beekeepers, those interested in becoming beekeepers, and non-beekeepers interested in growing bee-friendly plants alike.

"New Farms For Old Through Deep Plowing, With Du Pont Red Cross Low Freezing Dynamite" explores the innovative use of dynamite in early 20th-century agriculture. Published by E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, this book details the techniques and benefits of using dynamite to improve soil conditions and create new farmland. It showcases how deep plowing, facilitated by the controlled use of explosives, could transform unproductive land into fertile fields, thereby enhancing agricultural output and land value. This historical document provides a fascinating insight into the intersection of technology and agriculture, reflecting a time when industrial advancements were eagerly adopted to modernize farming practices. The book serves as a valuable resource for understanding early methods of land improvement and the role of companies like du Pont in shaping agricultural innovation in the United States. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
