English-Swahili Swahili-English Immersive Dictionary
Organized in an English-Swahili section and a Swahili-English section, English-Swahili Swahili-English Immersive Dictionary is a comprehensive presentation of Swahili usual lexicon. In both sections, entries are presented in clusters, based on the connections between the words of the target language (Swahili) in terms of meaning or origin. This meaning-driven presentation allows target language terms that are relatively similar in meaning, and therefore easily confused, as well as terms derived from the same base, to appear together in parallel contrastive lines. This creates an immersion effect that is particularly stimulating for language learning, since the user gets the opportunity to discover the words of the learned language group-by-group, rather than one-by-one, and is constantly reminded of subtle differences between different terms. It will help the learner master the vocabulary at a faster pace and with a better understanding of the rules that shape the lexicon of the target language. In addition, the introduction to the dictionary presents key grammatical points of Swahili that will help the reader make a productive use of information provided in the body of the dictionary. Additional grammatical information about the target language words such as the agreement pattern, the register of speech, or the level of use, is also provided in both sections to make it immediately accessible to the non-native user. The book is ideal for English-speaking learners of Swahili.

Membering the Rhodesian Linguistic Agenda in Zimbabwe
Membering the Rhodesian Linguistic Agenda in Zimbabwe reports on a study carried out in Zimbabwe to ascertain the degree and effect of honouring the colonial linguistic agenda. The book employs an interpretivist philosophy and qualitative research approach that relies on participatory observations, interviewing purposively sampled informants and focus group discussions involving snowball sampled graduates. It was inspired by the Critical Language Policy Theory that considers language choice a critical determinant factor in how communities are administered politically, economically, socioculturally and educationally. It establishes that whereas linguistic imperialism meant to serve as the lifeblood of the Southern Rhodesian colonial machine, the former coloniser ensured coloniality in Zimbabwe by presenting the English language as a sacred media in political, economic, sociocultural and educational settings forever. The study establishes that the only way Zimbabwe and other such post-colonies could find redemption is by eradicating the sacredness of former colonisers' languages by adding value to all their languages and the indigenous knowledge systems associated with them. It also demonstrates that the bigger the delay, the more is irretrievably lost together with custodians of the languages. This book will be informative for undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers in linguistics, communication, sociology, anthropology and history. It may also serve well as a resource to government researchers, politicians and other policymakers.
If a poem has a meaning, shame on the poet
Jafaripour attended many poetry analysis meetings in Tehran, Ramhormoz, Bushehr, and several other towns/cities in Iran. Most of the times, he did not like the way poetry was treated in those meetings. He shared videos of such meetings. Jafaripour narrows down his issue to literature, then to poetry, then to poetry criticism, and then to a specific part of criticism attempts, which is meaningfulness. In poetry analysis sessions, people ask undue questions from a poet, in his/her face. People ask for very specific meaning of each couplet of a new poem, and make the poet desperate & exhausted. Jafaripour sees this status as an offensive thing for poetry's world in general. He argues "Why do you expect a meaning from something that was not originated for meaningfulness?". He gives examples of non-poetic phrases with single meaning and says "If you need exact meaning so badly, get out of poetry discussions & read chemistry or math for example". In his book, he gives lots of other areas to poetry audiences, and asks them to stop focusing on meaningfulness, and instead, to look for negative or positive points in those vast areas. The matter he is pointing to, is a big issue among ordinary readers of poetry and philosophers and even goes back in history to Plato. This book may be not enough for clarifying or helping non-professional audiences of literature & poetry, to become better critical reviewers. It may help to give a good list o Dos & DONTs to anyone interested in poetry analysis.

Indians and Other Misnomers of the Upper Great Lakes
No less than 27 out of the 50 states' names in the USA are based in American Indian languages. Additionally, six out of 13 of Canada's provinces and territories have names with indigenous origins, and, of course, Canada itself is derived from an indigenous source. Shakespeare quipped, "What's in a name?" A lot, it turns out, because states like California and Florida reflect their Spanish history; here, in the Great Lakes, that history is indigenous. If you have an understanding of the name of a place, its history may reveal itself. And that history will, most likely, enrich your own life and your place in it.Join us on this journey through Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ontario, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota as we alphabetically traverse indigenous place names in each locale. Alternately, you can peruse an alphabetical concordance of every place name. In the appendices, you'll discover details of US and Canadian treaties with indigenous people, and many that are still under dispute today--including the Anishinaabek, Ottawa, Chippewa, Potawatomi, Miami, Kickapoo, Sauk, Sioux, Ojibway, Mississauga, Mohawk, Algonquin, Iroquois, Huron, and related First Nations bands in Ontario."Emeritus Professor Phil Bellfy has used his life-long Indigenous knowledge to produce this imaginative, original work that will be indispensable to any researcher working on Indigenous studies in the Great Lakes watershed. Indians and Other Misnomers of the Upper Great Lakes will be in the forefront of changing the way in which Indigenous knowledge shapes the hitherto colonial narrative of the Great Lakes." David T. McNab, professor emeritus, York University, Toronto, Ontario. "Indians and Other Misnomers of the Upper Great Lakes is a fascinating exploration of the Indigenous origins of many place names bordering the Great Lakes. This book offers readers the opportunity to contemplate their place within the landscape of the Indigenous homelands now claimed by the Canadian and American settler states. It is a must-own companion book for researchers, residents and anyone interested in the places, history and linguistic heritages of the Great Lakes." --Karl Hele, Anishinaabeg and the Davidson Chair in Canadian Studies, Mount Allison University "Words carry meaning and history. In this Indians and Other Misnomers of the Upper Great Lakes, Dr. Phil Bellfy takes us on an etymological journey around the Great Lakes region as he explains the possible origins and meanings of Native American place names. This book helps paint a relational picture of the cultural world of the Anishinaabe Three Fires Confederacy of Ojibway, Odawa, and Potawatomi and how that view has been impacted by settler colonialism." -- Dr. Martin Reinhardt, Anishinaabe Ojibway citizen of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians; professor of Native American Studies, Northern Michigan University, president of the Michigan Indian Education Council."Indians and Other Misnomers of the Upper Great Lakes is an important and fascinating book that reminds the reader that the culture and language of Native Americans is still with us today. It enriches our language, and the words alone make clear how long this land has been revered and cherished." -- Tom Powers, Michigan In Books"This is a helpful resource for those looking to explore regional history." -- Chronicle, Historical Society of Michigan"Bellfy's book is a very important reference work that should be carried in all public, school, and home libraries." -- Sue Harrison, award-winning author of The Midwife's Touch

Higher Lessons in English
The plan of "Higher Lessons" will perhaps be better understood if we first speak of two classes of text-books with which this work is brought into competition. In one class are those that aim chiefly to present a course of technical grammar in the order of Orthography, Etymology, Syntax, and Prosody. These books give large space to grammatical Etymology, and demand much memorizing of definitions, rules, declensions, and conjugations, and much formal word parsing, -work of which a considerable portion is merely the invention of grammarians, and has little value in determining the pupil's use of language or in developing his reasoning faculties. This is a revival of the long?endured, unfruitful, old-time method. In another class are those that present a miscellaneous collection of lessons in Composition, Spelling, Pronunciation, Sentence-analysis, Technical Grammar, and General Information, without unity or continuity. The pupil who completes these books will have gained something by practice and will have picked up some scraps of knowledge; but his information will be vague and disconnected, and he will have missed that mental training which it is the aim of a good text-book to afford. A text-book is of value just so far as it presents a clear, logical development of its subject. It must present its science or its art as a natural growth, otherwise there is no apology for its being. In this revised work we have given additional reasons for the opinions we hold, and have advanced to some new positions; have explained more fully what some teachers have thought obscure; have qualified what we think was put too positively in former editions; have given the history of constructions where this would deepen interest or aid in composition; have quoted the verdicts of usage on many locutions condemned by purists; have tried to work into the pupil's style the felicities of expression found in the lesson sentences; have taught the pupil earlier in the work, and more thoroughly, the structure and the function of paragraphs; and have led him on from the composition of single sentences of all kinds to the composition of these great groups of sentences. But the distinctive features of "Higher Lessons" that have made the work so useful and so popular stand as they have stood-the Study of Words from their Offices in the Sentence, Analysis for the sake of subsequent Synthesis, Easy Gradation, the Subdivisions and Modifications of the Parts of Speech after the treatment of these in the Sentence, etc., etc. We confess to some surprise that so little of what was thought good in matter and method years ago has been seriously affected by criticism since. The additions made to "Higher Lessons"-additions that bring the work up to the latest requirements-are generally in foot-notes to pages, and sometimes are incorporated into the body of the Lessons, which in number and numbering remain as they were. The books of former editions and those of this revised edition can, therefore, be used in the same class without any inconvenience.
A Bilingual Revolution for Africa
Language is a powerful tool that shapes our identity, connects us to our culture, and allows us to understand and appreciate the diversity of human cultures. In Africa, there are over 2,000 different languages spoken, making it the most linguistically diverse continent on the planet. This creates a unique and complex environment for education, particularly for children who are in the early stages of language acquisition. The native or first language of a child plays a critical role in their cognitive development and perception of the world around them. It is through language that children learn to communicate, understand their environment, and make sense of their experiences. Children who have access to their native language during the early stages of language acquisition tend to develop stronger cognitive abilities, which can benefit their academic performance and overall well-being.However, despite the clear benefits of multilingualism and the importance of native language in child development, many education systems in Africa continue to prioritize colonial languages such as English, French, and Portuguese over indigenous languages. This results in a lack of educational resources and opportunities for children who speak their native language, which can lead to educational inequality and a disconnection from their cultural identity. In response to this, there is a growing need for multilingual education programs that value and support students' linguistic and cultural backgrounds. These programs prioritize the use of the child's native language as a means of instruction and aim to promote multilingualism as a valuable asset. They also recognize the importance of preserving indigenous languages and cultures, and work to ensure that these languages are not lost due to the dominance of colonial languages.Overall, the need for multilingual education programs in Africa is stronger than ever. By prioritizing the use of the child's native language and promoting multilingualism, these programs can support the cognitive development and academic success of children, as well as the preservation of linguistic and cultural diversity. How can we re-evaluate and re-conceptualize the way we approach and think about multilingualism in education? What can we learn from Africa's linguistic situation and apply to other multilingual regions? How can we create more inclusive and empowering educational environments that promote multilingualism as a valuable asset rather than a hindrance? These questions will be explored in this book.
The Undeciphered Signs of Linear B
Decades after Michael Ventris deciphered Linear B and showed that its language was Greek, nearly one-sixth of its syllabic signs' sound-values are still unknown. This book offers a new approach to establishing these undeciphered signs' possible values. Analysis of Linear B's structure and usage not only establishes these signs' most likely sound-values - providing the best possible basis for future decipherments - but also sheds light on the writing system as a whole. The undeciphered signs are also used to explore the evidence provided by palaeography for the chronology of the Linear B documents and the activities of the Mycenaean scribes. The conclusions presented in this book therefore deepen our understanding not only of the undeciphered signs but also of the Linear B writing system as a whole, the texts it was used to write, and the insight these documents bring us into the world of the Mycenaean palaces. A colour version of figures 5.1-5.4 of chapter 5 can be found under the 'Resources' tab.

Linguistic Organisation and Native Title
Classical Aboriginal societies in Australia have commonly been described in terms of social organisation and local organisation. This book presents rich detail on a third and related domain that has not been given the same kind of attention: linguistic organisation. Basing their analyses on fieldwork among the Wik peoples of Cape York Peninsula, north Australia, Peter Sutton and Ken Hale show how cosmology, linguistic variation, language prehistory, clan totemic identities, geopolitics, land use and land ownership created a vibrant linguistic organisation in a classical Aboriginal society. This has been a society long in love with language and languages. Its people have richly imbued the domain of rights and interests in country-the foundations of their native title as recognised in Australian law-with rights and interests in the abundance of languages and dialects given to them at the start of the world.
Higher Lessons in English
Brainerd Kellogg (August 15, 1834 - January 9, 1920) was born in Champlain, New York. He was a Tutor (1860-1861) and Professor of Rhetoric and English Literature (1861-1868) at Middlebury College in Vermont, United States. From 1868 to 1907 he was professor at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. He published a number of influential education books.Kellogg was the author of Rhetoric; History of the English Language. With Alonzo Reed, he jointly authored Graded Lessons in English; Higher Lessons in English; A One Book Course. He authored a variety of textbooks on English writing and literature, including a series on the works of William Shakespeare. Most methods of diagramming in pedagogy are based on the work of Alonzo Reed and Brainerd Kellogg in their book Higher Lessons in English, first published in 1877, though the method has been updated with recent understanding of grammar. Reed and Kellogg were preceded, and their work probably informed, by W. S. Clark, who published his "balloon" method of depicting grammar in his 1847 book A Practical Grammar: In Which Words, Phrases & Sentences are Classified According to Their Offices and Their Various Relationships to Each Another.
Swahili in Spaces of War
This monograph examines the roles and functions of Swahili in war/conflict situations, and the impact of wars on the destiny of the language. Covering a period of over a century, the monograph explores this sociolinguistic theme in the context of six wars/conflicts: the Maji Maji resistance against German rule, the two World Wars, the anti-colonial resistance to British colonialism, the wars of the Great Lakes region, the cold wars, and the ongoing war against terrorism. In geographical focus, some of the war situations explored here are "local," others are "transnational," and others still rather "global" in scope and ramifications. In the final analysis, the monograph provides important snapshots of the conflict-based history of the Swahili language, demonstrating once again that language is a malleable tool that can be appropriated and galvanized to serve the interests of either party in a conflict and sometimes as a means of creating hegemonic and anti-hegemonic meanings.
