Language is a powerful tool that shapes our identity, connects us to our culture, and allows us to understand and appreciate the diversity of human cultures. In Africa, there are over 2,000 different languages spoken, making it the most linguistically diverse continent on the planet. This creates a unique and complex environment for education, particularly for children who are in the early stages of language acquisition. The native or first language of a child plays a critical role in their cognitive development and perception of the world around them. It is through language that children learn to communicate, understand their environment, and make sense of their experiences. Children who have access to their native language during the early stages of language acquisition tend to develop stronger cognitive abilities, which can benefit their academic performance and overall well-being.However, despite the clear benefits of multilingualism and the importance of native language in child development, many education systems in Africa continue to prioritize colonial languages such as English, French, and Portuguese over indigenous languages. This results in a lack of educational resources and opportunities for children who speak their native language, which can lead to educational inequality and a disconnection from their cultural identity.In response to this, there is a growing need for multilingual education programs that value and support students' linguistic and cultural backgrounds. These programs prioritize the use of the child's native language as a means of instruction and aim to promote multilingualism as a valuable asset. They also recognize the importance of preserving indigenous languages and cultures, and work to ensure that these languages are not lost due to the dominance of colonial languages.Overall, the need for multilingual education programs in Africa is stronger than ever. By prioritizing the use of the child's native language and promoting multilingualism, these programs can support the cognitive development and academic success of children, as well as the preservation of linguistic and cultural diversity.How can we re-evaluate and re-conceptualize the way we approach and think about multilingualism in education? What can we learn from Africa's linguistic situation and apply to other multilingual regions? How can we create more inclusive and empowering educational environments that promote multilingualism as a valuable asset rather than a hindrance? These questions will be explored in this book.
A Grammar of Digo
This revised edition remains the only comprehensive grammar of the underdocumented Digo (Chidigo) language. Included in this revision is additional language material plus an expanded bibliography of publications in and about Digo.Besides a clear description of Digo morphology and syntax, with multiple illustrative examples, this grammar includes several glossed texts, a 1700-item wordlist, and a list of over 100 botanical names. It gives particular emphasis to semantic and discourse relations of elements that are often not analysed from this perspective in grammatical descriptions. These include the forms and functions of Digo's complex system of demonstratives, a description of over 30 tense, aspect, and movement markers, and a detailed discussion of information structure and non-verbal clauses. The original volume was a result of seven years fieldwork in Digo, the southernmost language of the Mijikenda cluster of Bantu languages, spoken along the coast of East Africa in Kenya and Tanzania.This book will be of interest to linguists concerned with Bantu languages, typology, morphosyntax, and semantics.
The Undeciphered Signs of Linear B
Decades after Michael Ventris deciphered Linear B and showed that its language was Greek, nearly one-sixth of its syllabic signs' sound-values are still unknown. This book offers a new approach to establishing these undeciphered signs' possible values. Analysis of Linear B's structure and usage not only establishes these signs' most likely sound-values - providing the best possible basis for future decipherments - but also sheds light on the writing system as a whole. The undeciphered signs are also used to explore the evidence provided by palaeography for the chronology of the Linear B documents and the activities of the Mycenaean scribes. The conclusions presented in this book therefore deepen our understanding not only of the undeciphered signs but also of the Linear B writing system as a whole, the texts it was used to write, and the insight these documents bring us into the world of the Mycenaean palaces. Early Vocabularies of Mohawk
This small book features a collection of the first known vocabularies of the Mohawk language dating from the mid-17th century. It features a 1635 vocabulary of about 200 words from the anonymous Journey into the Mohawk and Oneida Country, ascribed to Harmen van den Bogaert. The volume also includes Wassenaer's numerals and month names of 1624, and 15 words and phrases from Megapolensis's list of 1644.
Linguistic Organisation and Native Title
Classical Aboriginal societies in Australia have commonly been described in terms of social organisation and local organisation. This book presents rich detail on a third and related domain that has not been given the same kind of attention: linguistic organisation. Basing their analyses on fieldwork among the Wik peoples of Cape York Peninsula, north Australia, Peter Sutton and Ken Hale show how cosmology, linguistic variation, language prehistory, clan totemic identities, geopolitics, land use and land ownership created a vibrant linguistic organisation in a classical Aboriginal society. This has been a society long in love with language and languages. Its people have richly imbued the domain of rights and interests in country-the foundations of their native title as recognised in Australian law-with rights and interests in the abundance of languages and dialects given to them at the start of the world.
Higher Lessons in English
Brainerd Kellogg (August 15, 1834 - January 9, 1920) was born in Champlain, New York. He was a Tutor (1860-1861) and Professor of Rhetoric and English Literature (1861-1868) at Middlebury College in Vermont, United States. From 1868 to 1907 he was professor at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. He published a number of influential education books.Kellogg was the author of Rhetoric; History of the English Language. With Alonzo Reed, he jointly authored Graded Lessons in English; Higher Lessons in English; A One Book Course. He authored a variety of textbooks on English writing and literature, including a series on the works of William Shakespeare.Most methods of diagramming in pedagogy are based on the work of Alonzo Reed and Brainerd Kellogg in their book Higher Lessons in English, first published in 1877, though the method has been updated with recent understanding of grammar. Reed and Kellogg were preceded, and their work probably informed, by W. S. Clark, who published his "balloon" method of depicting grammar in his 1847 book A Practical Grammar: In Which Words, Phrases & Sentences are Classified According to Their Offices and Their Various Relationships to Each Another.
Swahili in Spaces of War
This monograph examines the roles and functions of Swahili in war/conflict situations, and the impact of wars on the destiny of the language. Covering a period of over a century, the monograph explores this sociolinguistic theme in the context of six wars/conflicts: the Maji Maji resistance against German rule, the two World Wars, the anti-colonial resistance to British colonialism, the wars of the Great Lakes region, the cold wars, and the ongoing war against terrorism. In geographical focus, some of the war situations explored here are "local," others are "transnational," and others still rather "global" in scope and ramifications. In the final analysis, the monograph provides important snapshots of the conflict-based history of the Swahili language, demonstrating once again that language is a malleable tool that can be appropriated and galvanized to serve the interests of either party in a conflict and sometimes as a means of creating hegemonic and anti-hegemonic meanings.
