Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in Classrooms
Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,3, Martin Luther University, language: English, abstract: Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) can be defined as a dual-focused educational approach in which an additional language is used for learning and teaching both content and language. Thus, a CLIL lesson does not only focus on content but also on language and, furthermore, aims to prepare the pupils for an international society and to increase their awareness of other cultures. The given lesson combines the subjects Science and English and especially aims to increase pupils' interest in the natural phenomenon "the pond". The first chapter of this paper focuses on the general facts regarding my lesson followed by the consultation of the Science and English subject curriculum considering the lesson's contents, whereas the final paragraph deals with the description of the lesson's learning environment. The lesson plan is presented in the second segment of the paper, followed by the detailed analysis of the teacher talk based on the lesson's transcript. The subsequent part focuses on the teaching strategy "Scaffolding", an approach describing a teacher's situated help for pupils in order to support their learning progresses. The assignment closes with the conclusion.

The Art of Teaching a Second Language
This book is primarily intended for language teachers, but it is also readily available for average language learners. In this book, it is argued that in contrast to the mechanistic perspective of many natural sciences, language and its acquisition must be perceived as an art. The science of language is about what language is, that is, its grammatical structure, the pronunciation system, and its semantic organization. The art of language, however, is about what language does, that is, its pragmatic function and how people use it to do things. The art of learning a second language is about the notion that learners are more than passive recipients of a phenomenon called learning a second language. Learners are engaged in a unique and dynamic learning experience, and they can actively participate in shaping and reshaping such experience. The learning feeds them and they also feed the language.
William Morris and the Kelmscott Press. Aesthetic Resistance in Nineteenth-century Britain as a Redefinition of Socialist Propaganda?
Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,7, University of M羹nster, language: English, abstract: This paper analyzes the Kelmscott Press under William Morris, which formed a form of aesthetic resistance against the commercial print culture in Victorian Britain. The paper discusses if this aesthetic resistance can be understood as an extension of Morris's socialist activism and as a transformation of conventional propaganda.
Trauma in Poems of Major Stewart Hill and Captain James Jeffrey. An Attempt to Devitalise Cathy Caruth’s Unrepresentability Claim
Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,0, University of Paderborn, language: English, abstract: The poems presented in this paper demonstrate the presence of trauma in poetry through their use of stylistic devices, tone and atmosphere. Thus, this paper aims to invalidate and criticise Caruth's approach to the unrepresentability of trauma by investigating three poems: two poems were written by war veterans, previously deployed in Afghanistan, and one was written by a veteran's daughter to prove the literal representability of trauma. A close reading of the stylistic devices, tone and created atmosphere emphasises the possibilities that poets must present their trauma through literature. Lastly, the analysis of Olivia Hill's poem reflects on the trauma perception from a different angle - namely, from outside the traumatised mind. Additionally, it underscores the effects that parental traumatic experiences have on children. 'Trauma forces the self into hiding, and while the sensory manifold keeps "recording" sights, sounds, smells and feelings, the brain fails to work them through. The videographer leaves, but the tape keeps running'. This image, provided by Boston University's Joshua Pederson in his paper on challenging literary trauma theorists, reflects one perspective of the nature of trauma that is shared by many scholars and psychologists around the world. Cathy Caruth's 1996 Unclaimed Experience and Trauma: Explorations in Memory present the essential elements of trauma discourse, heavily relying on Freudian theories. Her definition of trauma is based on the claim that trauma victims suffer physical injury, followed by belated symptoms without causal relationship to the preceding injury that cannot be reconciled with one another. Caruth also emphasises the nature of traumatic recollection being 'largely inaccessible to conscious recall and control' because of its irrevocably damaging na
The Connection of Culture and Face and the Role of Intercultural Competence
Case Study from the year 2020 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,3, University of Kassel, language: English, abstract: Since globalisation leads us to interact more with people from all over the world, it is a logical consequence that we get in touch with an increasing number of people from different cultural backgrounds. Therefore, it is important to be aware that every person has their own concept of face, which refers to one's values, belief system and behaviour. Thus, it is of critical significance to analyse to what extent the different concepts of face of certain people differ in order to make clear why intercultural misunderstandings might appear. As culture is one of the most significant factors that have an impact on a person's concept of face, this term paper is going to deal with the connection of culture and face and will provide a comparison of the German and Japanese face concepts. Following this analysis, a model developed by Claudia Finkbeiner will be introduced to demonstrate how these cultural differences including one's concept of face might be overcome in order to ensure successful intercultural encounters.

Endgame by Samuel Beckett. Analysis in the Context of Pragmatics
Research Paper (undergraduate) in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 2022, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this research is to explore and analyse Samuel Beckett's ludicrous drama, Endgame, in the context of Pragmatics in general and violations of Conversational Principles in particular, as well as in the context of Pragmatics. Using Grice's idea of Conversational Principles, the study seeks to evaluate the selected conversational interactions in a formalised manner. Conversational theatre is characterised by the skillful use of language as a potent tool for communication; nevertheless, in Beckett's play, characters are concerned with various elements of language and its usage. The dialogues utilised in an absurd play are nonsensical exchanges in which there is no sense of cohesion between the characters. It opens up a wide range of possibilities for the study of many elements of language. It appears silly, yet it serves as a means of communication between the characters. The characters in this story frequently utilise broken words, make nonsensical comments, repeat themselves, and hesitate for no apparent reason, which is typical of the genre. His adept use of informal language and fragmented sentences exemplifies how language should be used in a natural setting.

However, when it comes to politeness and impoliteness, those notions are dictated by the culture and language, but also personal feelings of an individual. The aim of this paper is to establish the differences between the forms of politeness and impoliteness between the Western and Eastern European culture. The representatives of Poland and United Kingdom tend to different linguistic and behavioral choices, when in particular circumstances. Speakers from Great Britain and Poland have been interviewed, in order to establish whether their idea of politeness and impoliteness is culture-based or depends rather on the individual himself. Moreover, the behavioral and linguistic pattern of the individuals was evaluated to find out, whether there are certain guidelines of politeness in the given culture.

Prepositional Mistakes in German L2 English Speakers
Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2021 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Grammar, Style, Working Technique, grade: 1,0, University of Freiburg, course: Introduction to Literary Studies, language: English, abstract: When doing an internship at a German secondary school, I realised English teachers are pointing out many errors to their students. Whether it is grammar, wrong use of a vocabulary word or their pronunciation, no matter their age or grade, the students are corrected whenever they say something wrong, but not once did I notice a teacher point out any prepositional mistakes to their students. But prepositional mistakes seem to be very common, I heard them in loads of sentences students tried to form on their own. As a result of this observation, I want to conduct in this study how many and what kind of prepositional mistakes are being made in the English language acquisition of German native speakers.

Teaching English to Young Arabic Speakers
The book explores young Arabic-speaking children's English language learning. Through classroom-based research and learner work samples, the book analyses the interplay between cultural norms and the critical role that teachers play in orchestrating classroom discourse through skillful use of available instructional materials, questioning strategies and feedback to learners. The author shows the potential of instructional materials to influence young learners' vocabulary, reading comprehension, and written production, as well as the way they acquire the academic literacies needed in school subjects taught in English. She reviews the spread of the practice of teaching English to young and very young children and the increasing demand for English-medium instruction in the Arabic-speaking region, with a particular focus on the negative transfer from Arabic to English spelling and grammar. The book also discusses the importance of story narratives, arguing they are an ideal medium for language teaching because of their rich linguistic repertoire and the strong motivational force that stories have on young language learners and their cognitive growth, essential to their later academic success. Taken together, the research findings and classroom vignettes suggest that children's language learning happens within a complex system of interactive variables and cultural norms and expectations.

The Revolt in the Desert
Choosing words with confidence in form of uniqueness is a kind of playing chess at Literature. King, queen, bishop, rook, and pawn have their known capacities, but the possibilities of combination are infinite and unpredictable. Perception on same words, from several essays, speaking or thinking at various temperaments and circumstances to the hearer and listener proportionately makes the same human mind to act with different physiology. To achieve a move is always to solve a problem, and is an essentially a creative art: "As the waves make towards the pebbled shore'' The work of art in existing book has a personal and literary style progressed with visual image, and determined with emotions and self-analysis, also, written very distinctly on human works of immortal beauty and works of nature. An eminent reader of the book, with manner of expression, must act sometimes as a thoughtful human with his general intelligence of his age: the spectacle is the collective life of humanity. No human being knows the whole about himself: It reminds on the Browning's fine poem, 'How it Strikes a Contemporary', who walked about, took note of everything, looked at the new house building, and pocked his stick into the mortar.
Taking Literature and Language Learning Online
The use of literary texts in language classrooms is firmly established, but new questions arise with the transfer to remote teaching and learning. How do we teach literature online? How do learners react to being taught literature online? Will new genres emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic? Is the literary canon changing? This volume celebrates the vitality of literary and pedagogic responses to the pandemic and presents research into the phenomena observed in this evolving field. One strand of the book discusses literary outputs stimulated by the pandemic as well as past pandemics. Another strand looks at the pedagogy of engaging learners with literature online, examining learners of different ages and of different proficiency levels and different educational backgrounds, including teacher education. Finally, a third strand looks at the affordances of various technologies for teaching online and the way they interact with literature and with language learning. The contributions in this volume take literature teaching online away from static lecturing strategies, present numerous options for online teaching, and provide research-based grounding for the implementation of these pedagogies.

A hands-on guide for practitioners, this book prepares instructors to teach in-sessional English for Academic Purposes (ISEAP) higher education courses. As university cohorts become more diverse, there is demand for in-sessional EAP courses not only to support international students, but also increasingly as a provision for all students. This informative resource explores the varying formats of ISEAP courses and how they are embedded within and alongside students' degree programmes in the United Kingdom and beyond. In accessible chapters, authors Neil Adam Tibbetts and Timothy Chapman present illuminating findings drawn from interviews conducted with experts in the field and highlight the challenges that students and practitioners face. Avoiding prescriptive recommendations, Tibbetts and Chapman address different models and contexts of ISEAP courses at the university level and offer guidance and tools for practice. Covering key topics such as pedagogies, logistical challenges, and the wider university context, this book not only provides a roadmap to the often ill-defined but essential domain of ISEAP but also provokes questions and ideas for further reflection, guiding the reader towards a deeper understanding of their role and development in context. Engaging and inviting, Tibbetts and Chapman's helpful text is a necessary resource for teachers to design and lead successful ISEAP courses.
