War of 1812 Bounty Lands in Illinois
By: James D. Walker, Pub. 1840, 666 pages, Index, soft cover, ISBN #978-1-63914-00-9.Illinois has had quite the interesting history to statehood in 1818. French Canadian explorers starting arriving in the late 1600's via the Mississippi River. They established missions and forts along various rivers before retreating back into what is now Missouri. This allowed the British to take rule over these lands from the French. After the Revolutionary War, settlers began arriving from Kentucky in the 1780's via the Ohio River. In 1812, tensions between these settlers and the Native American came to an impasse. U.S. troops would eventually prevail and 5 million acres of land in this Illinois Territory were set aside to pay for these services. Information to be found within this book: date of patent, its Warrant Number, name of the veteran along with his rank and regiment, description of land including its location, name of the patentee recipient, many time giving his last know city and state of residence, and date of delivery of the patent. By knowing this warrant number, the researcher can then acquire photocopies of the veterans service records. The amount of information contained in the Bounty Land Warrant Application Files varies greatly. In claims made by their heirs, the Veteran's service, date and place of death, relationship to the veteran, and if appropriate, the date and place of death of remarriage of widow is given. In support of many claims, discharge certificates and various personal documents were submitted to prove marriage and to establish dependency.

NPE* A story guide for unexpected DNA discoveries
Genealogy is a fun hobby until the results of a consumer DNA test reveal a devastating secret. NPE* A STORY GUIDE FOR UNEXPECTED DNA DISCOVERIES is an authentic resource for people uncovering a new identity, their loved ones, and genealogists who encounter NPEs in a family tree. There is no more fundamental human need than to belong - first to a family, and then to others. My story and research over three years provide information and support to guide readers. Relatable insights and true stories are presented that address the initial shock of discovery, suggestions about communications, new ethnicities, family recognitions and rejections, and the history of illegitimacy. NPEs are found in all races, religions, and socio-economic groups in every country where consumer DNA tests are sold. By 2022, 142 million people worldwide will take DNA tests for genealogy and medical information. Ten to fifteen percent will discover they are NPE, like me.(*Non-paternity event is a genetic genealogy term for a break in the family line/name, when your 'Dad' is not your biological father.)

These minutes of the vestry contain 5,000 individuals either as Vestry members or as those who had been appointed to possession land of property owners, apprentice young people to others in the parish for training in crafts or livelihoods, binding out young slaves for training, clothing and feeding and general care and welfare of the poor in their midst.
The Vestry Book of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia, 1682-1758
By: NSCD of Virginia, Pub. 1905, Reprinted 2021, 242 pages, Index, ISBN #0-89308-738-6.Considering the fact that New Kent County is a "BURNED" county prior to 1865, makes this book one of only a few sources of information about this county during this colonial period. This BURNED county was formed from York County in 1654 and is the parent county of: Hanover, King William, and King & Queen counties. When the parishes were formed by the General Assembly of Virginia, the Vestries were assigned some of the civil administrative functions and all such civil functions were official in nature and the records of actions taken were recorded in the vestry books. Such records contained in the Vestry book contained among other things such things as: upkeep of bastard children; payment for the upkeep of the ferry; prosecution of fornicators; appointment of road work crews; apprentice young people to others in the parish for training in crafts or other livelihoods; providing clothing, food and shelter for the poor and elderly; burial of the dead and many, many other similar duties.

East New Jersey Land Records, 1747-1757 (Books G2 and H2)
This volume covers the period when deeds and related records were recorded in deed books G2 (28 October 1747 to 13 December 1751) and H2 (5 February 1752 to 23 June 1757) for the counties of Essex, Middlesex, Monmouth and Somerset. There are numerous instances of transactions that occurred as far back as the early 1700s (with one dated 1668/9) but for various reasons not recorded until 1747-1757. Although Bergen County was a part of East New Jersey, the records for this period were recorded at the county courthouse and are not included here. Many familial relationships are revealed in these records. A full-name index adds to the value of this work.

Shinn and other written work, writing letters to those he could find with the same surname, and searching through public data including final wills.John also explains the various challenges faced, including destroyed and incomplete records and changes in the spelling of the family name over time.Whether your surname is Shine and you wish to find out more about your lineage, or you are interested to learn about the process and challenges involved in creating such a genealogy, this is an essential read.
