World Englishes as Components of a Complex Dynamic System
This Element proposes to view World Englishes as components of an overarching Complex Dynamic System of Englishes, against the conventional view of regarding them as discrete, rule-governed, categorial systems. After outlining this basic idea and setting it off from mainstream linguistic theories, it introduces the theory of Complex Dynamic Systems and the main properties of such systems (systemness, complexity, perpetual dynamics, network relationships, the interplay of order and chaos, emergentism and self-organization, nonlinearity and fractals, and attractors), and surveys earlier applications to language. Usage-based linguistics and construction grammar are outlined as suitable frameworks to explain how the Complex Systems principles manifest themselves in linguistic reality. Many structural properties and examples from several World Englishes are presented to illustrate the manifestations of Complex Systems principles in specific features of World Englishes. Finally, the option of employing the NetLogo programming environment to simulate variety emergence via agent-based modeling is suggested.

Namibian English in Its Multilingual Environment
Already much discussed within the World Englishes research paradigm, English in Namibia only began to develop into a dominant lingua franca from 1990 onwards. The study's central research questions are: How does spoken English vary in Namibia? Does it form one variety or several? And what is distinctly Namibian about it? To answer these questions, this study draws on perceptually contextualized speech data collected among young urban Namibian generations. It first identifies the historical and contemporary uses of English in Namibia in comparison with other languages. The patterns of code-switching into which Namibian English is embedded are illustrated based on a corpus of informal multilingual Namibian speech. The study then zooms in on its phonetic and grammatical features, with particular emphasis on how these features are perceived and socially distributed, and whether they represent transfers from native languages or imports from exogenous English varieties.
Second Language Anxiety
This book traces and summarizes theoretical insights and empirical findings on the topic of whether or not anxiety for language learning could be a causal variable for individual differences in language learning. The author brings together three decades of research to show that first language (L1) skills and second language (L2) aptitude are confounding variables in studies of language anxiety and that learners' levels of anxiety for L2 learning are strongly related to their levels of language achievement. These findings have suggested that language anxiety instruments reflect students' (accurate) self-perceptions of their language skills and their levels of L1 achievement and L2 aptitude. Community Interpreting in Cameroon
Cameroon by virtue of its colonial past, has embraced several exogenous cultures, civilizations and languages. This has no doubt left an indelible mark on the linguistic landscape of the country. From the Carthaginians, Greeks, Portuguese through the Germans to the French and English, the linguistic landscape of Cameroon could not remain the same and the impact can still be felt today. One of the most obvious consequences of these contacts is that English and French have remained vital communication mediums in the country. The introduction of these exogenous languages into an already extremely diverse linguistic repertoire entailed and still entails the use of middle men (referred to as interpreters) for effective communication. As it stands, there is no Cameroonian who can boast of being cleared of any linguistic challenges in a country where 70% of the citizens are rural and do not master the languages used in public domains. Access to public utility such as health care services is a considerable challenge which can only be overcome with the help of interpreters.
Soundings and the Politics of Sociolinguistic Listening for Transnational Space
In a world dominated by the visual, this book presents how a focus on the sounded experience and acts of listening may carve a way to reformulate emerging publics, create space for critical multilingual engagement and deepen recognition of emancipatory practices. Examining the emerging logics and rhythms among a group of post-EU accession UK Polish migrants, this book focuses on the semiotic processes through which contemporary moving bodies and communities place themselves in sociolinguistic landscapes. It considers how they develop metrics to account for sociolinguistic change and authenticate their projects and practices in transnational timespace. Possibility and Necessity in Translation
This book attempts to clarify the concepts of possibility and necessity in translation. It tries to use most of the previous contributions in translation studies which have used different terminologies to refer to the binary nature of the translation strategy. In this book, it is argued that to select the most appropriate translation method, the translator must first determine cases of possibility and necessity. Possibility means that the translator can use a source language-oriented strategy in which he keeps the same selection of the lexical items used by the original author. Necessity means that the translator cannot use a source language-oriented strategy for different reasons, and therefore, there will be a necessity for using a target language-oriented strategy. The selection of a translation strategy is intricately tied to the concepts of possibility and necessity, which guide translators in deciding how best to convey meaning from the source language to the target language.

The purpose of this analysis is to showcase the richness of irony and examine its impact on the reader. To support this, some of the most influential works on laughter and humor are discussed, including Bergson's "Das Lachen", Freud's "Der Witz und seine Beziehung zum Unbewussten", and Bachtin's "Literatur und Karneval". These theories illustrate how irony and humor can serve as powerful tools for social critique. By engaging their audience through laughter, authors are able to deliver a more or less bitter commentary on their world-challenging taboos and clich矇s without offending the sensibilities of their communities.
