With contributions spanning from the Indo-Iranian plains to the Baltic forests, the book reveals how beliefs about animals, agriculture and the household shaped Indo-European worldviews.Rich in detail and accessible in style, Indo-European Ecologies offers new perspectives for scholars and curious readers alike. The Wren The Mind Allows To Sing

2025/07/03 出版

We set out to read the three books of Peter O'Leary's trilogy on consciousness: Phosphorescence of Thought, Earth Is Best and The Hidden Eyes of Things. Read we did, thoughtful and mirthful, from the 1st of May through the 9th of June, 2023, 40 days and 40 nights. Here is our logbook, and our dove.Billie Chernicoff, 12 June 2023This work we've been pondering never loses its tensegrity, to invoke Buckminster Fuller. Its openness is a fretwork at times. Close weave at others. Caution, I tell myself, looking at the brilliance of critical approach and amplifying notation, the voices joined herein. Is this the charisma of age? No, just aging. To realize the world as a nine-year-old once aspired to, that of Bennet Cerf and Arlene Frances, mid-century Manhattan. Scary, long night, we endured before the dawn of pop art. No, this isn't self-indulgence on my part, Peter's range of voices sideswipes gangster movies and Spenser's Faerie Queene to our shared delight.Latter-day Goethe. It fits. The natural world, mushrooms and birds, the classical, Peter's Latin and Greek, his soulful sojourn in Vienna an "Italian Journey." Or so we discover in this colloquy when dialogue resounds rather than resolves. A Time Machine, it feels like, returning to Berkeley in the late fifties with Jack Spicer, Robert Duncan, Robin Blaser, and thus, to that last serrated edge of Modernism. Still shaken to the core by Yeats's late poems, especially compared to Pound's Personae and the impending fragmentation of his Cantos alongside Eliot's midlife abandonment of poetry. Nearly wrecked upon this reef, we see the lighthouse in time, manned by Charles Olson, and how our poetry can contain a prospect, it can, it will be a projection in and of its glorious self. -Thomas Meyer

Prosody and interactional fluency of Italian learners of German

2025/07/03 出版

This book explores the development of prosodic and interactional competence in second language acquisition, drawing on data from peer interactions by Italian learners of German in both German and their native language, Italian, as well as from German native speakers. Three key aspects of spoken interaction are examined across proficiency levels: prosodic marking of information status, turn-taking, and backchannels. The analysis of prosodic marking of information status reveals that learners mark givenness using distinct fundamental frequency patterns, as in their native language, but apply a reduction in prosodic strength typically found postfocally in native German, irrespective of its function. This suggests that learners perceive deaccentuation as a salient marker of native German, which they adopt during their learning. This book also presents a novel approach to quantifying interactional competence, showing that lower proficiency negatively affects the smoothness of interactional flow, resulting in reduced speech time and increased overall silence. Finally, it provides new insights into backchannel use in second language and cross-linguistic contexts. Results show a complex, non-arbitrary mapping between lexical type, turn-taking function, and intonation in both native languages. In second language speech, dyad-specific behaviour was found to have a stronger effect on backchannel frequency and duration than second language proficiency. Furthermore, learners tend to transfer preferred lexical backchannel types from their first language into their second language. Overall, this book offers a multidimensional perspective on second language spoken interaction and lays the groundwork for future applications in language teaching and assessment. The doctoral work, on which this book is based, was awarded the IPA PhD Thesis Award for the "Best PhD Thesis in the broad area of Phonetics, Speech Sciences, and Laboratory Phonology" in 2024.

Algospeak

Adam,Aleksic  著
Knopf Publis 出版
2025/07/02 出版

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - From linguist Adam Aleksic, known as @etymologynerd on social media, comes a captivating exploration of how internet algorithms are transforming language and communication in unprecedented ways. "Packed with fascinating facts, of-the-moment observations, and a sparkling voice, Algospeak is a gift to any word nerd. Deftly covering everything from emoji etymologies and trendbait to Taylor Swift fanilects... Adam Aleksic is the wise, yet accessible internet linguistics oracle we need."--Amanda Montell, author of The Age of Magical Overthinking and Cultish From "brainrot" memes and incel slang to the trend of adding "-core" to different influencer aesthetics, the internet has ushered in an unprecedented linguistic upheaval. We're entering an entirely new era of etymology, heralded by the invisible forces driving social media algorithms. Thankfully, Algospeak is here to explain. As a professional linguist, Adam Aleksic understands the gravity of language and the way we use it: he knows the ways it has morphed and changed, how it reflects society, and how, in its everyday usage, we carry centuries of human history on our tongues. As a social media influencer, Aleksic is also intimately familiar with the internet's reach and how social media impacts the way we engage with one another. New slang emerges and goes viral overnight. Accents are shaped or erased on YouTube. Grammatical rules, loopholes, and patterns surface and transform language as we know it. Our interactions, social norms, and habits--both online and in person--shift into something completely different. As Aleksic uses original surveys, data, and internet archival research to usher us through this new linguistic landscape, he also illuminates how communication is changing in both familiar and unexpected ways. From our use of emojis to sentence structure to the ways younger generations talk about sex and death (see unalive in English and desvivirse in Spanish), we are in a brand-new world, one shaped by algorithms and technology. Algospeak is an energetic, astonishing journey into language, the internet, and what this intersection means for all of us.

Socio-economic, Political, and Cultural Status of Morrison's Women

Sadia,Afroz  著
2025/07/01 出版

Toni Morrison's novels offer a nuanced exploration of the complexities of Black womanhood, illuminating the intersections of race, gender, and identity. Morrison challenges societal norms, revealing the multifaceted experiences of her characters and systemic forces that shape female lives. Her work serves as a vital contribution to feminist discourse, urging readers to confront legacies of oppression while envisioning possibilities for empowerment. Despite the significant contributions of her work to feminist literary criticism, there remains a need for further exploration of the intersections of race, gender, and class. As her literature continues to resonate with readers, the exploration of themes remains essential for understanding the ongoing struggles and triumphs of Black women in America and beyond. This book ultimately seeks to contribute to the broader conversation about the complexities of identity, community, and resistance in the face of systemic injustice, positioning Morrison's work as a crucial touchstone for contemporary feminist thought.

Echoes of Empire

Scholars' Press 出版
2025/07/01 出版

This book explores the persistent colonial themes in Mulk Raj Anand's major novels-Untouchable, Coolie, Two Leaves and a Bud, The Big Heart, and Death of a Hero. These works unveil the brutal realities of British Imperialism and its dehumanizing impact on India's marginalized: the oppressed castes, bonded labourers, women, and colonial soldiers. Anand's Death of a Hero, in particular, offers a poignant portrayal of an Indian soldier used and discarded by the British army, exposing the psychological toll of colonial wars and the betrayal of nationalist aspirations. Across his fiction, Anand critiques systemic exploitation, caste and class oppression, and the complicity of Indians who adopted colonial values for personal gain. Influenced by Gandhian ideals, Marxist thought, and personal grief, Anand gives voice to the silenced. Through his realistic and humanistic lens, his novels become a powerful reflection of India's colonial struggle and its enduring echoes.

Overcoming Anxiety with Powerful Communication Strategies

2025/07/01 出版

Grounded in the principles of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), it focuses particularly on English for Science and Technology (EST), analyzing the unique communicative demands placed on engineering students and professionals. The book also discusses the growing need for communication skills in global and Indian industry contexts, where English often serves as the primary working language.Through authentic examples and analysis, the book serves as a guide for educators, trainers, and students alike, providing tools to transform anxiety into effective expression.

The New Voice of God

2025/06/30 出版

For Christian European missionaries among the Cherokees at the turn of the eighteenth century, translating the Bible meant wrestling with the extreme structural differences between Cherokee and English. The New Voice of God reveals how these linguistic differences encoded basic predispositions and orientations toward the physical, spiritual, and social worlds--and how their translation in turn encodes the profound linguistic and cultural exchange manifested in the making of the Cherokee Bible. While the introduction of Christianity shaped Cherokee communicative practices and culture, the Cherokee language also reshaped the Bible to reflect a definitive Native worldview. Focusing on three books of the Cherokee Bible--Genesis, John, and Matthew--Margaret Bender and Thomas N. Belt demonstrate how Christianity, written in and on Cherokee terms, can be uniquely and distinctly Cherokee, while remaining undeniably Christian. For example, Cherokee's rich and complex grammar work against English's noun-centeredness, yielding creative approximations of European objects as conditions and essences as events. Cherokee's radically different pronoun structure includes the reader in Biblical conversation in surprising ways. The authors also explain the relevance of the Cherokee Indigenous writing system--invented by Sequoyah, a non-Christian native speaker--to the complex spiritual landscape of the nineteenth century. Their analysis suggests that the Cherokee Bible records this cross-cultural encounter at a deep philosophical level, providing evidence that microlinguistic detail powerfully and intricately reflects macrosociological phenomena. In showing how Cherokee Christians ingeniously adapted Christian practices to create unique social and spiritual identities, The New Voice of God documents how this adaptation--manifest in the translation of Christian texts into Cherokee--not only bridged two vastly different languages but also exposed deep philosophical differences, challenging Western cultural norms and reshaping spiritual discourse.

The book includes chapters that focus on macro levels of linguistic analyses (e.g., discourse and genre analysis) and micro levels (e.g., terminology) as well as translation.
