Documenting Maritime Heritage at Risk
Documenting Maritime Heritage at Risk addresses the risks posed to coastal piers and quays due to climate change, the urgent need for documentation and attendant questions regarding long-term conservation, and the role communities could have in this endeavour.Case studies from communities, researchers, and national agencies offer insights into the documentation and analysis of coastal heritage, guidance on survey methodologies, and the potential of digital tools. Communities living along the coast, who are deeply attached to their heritage, are facing these threats very directly - and often with a sense of having little agency in the discussions or decisions being taken. Yet, as the book demonstrates, they could have a central role to play as first-hand observers of the impact of climate change on their heritage. The collection offers an overview of the invaluable role of different participants, working collectively in the documentation and management of endangered maritime heritage.Documenting Maritime Heritage at Risk provides a vital resource for researchers and students engaged in the study of maritime heritage. It will also be of great interest to practitioners, such as local heritage or conservation officers and marine engineers who bear the primary responsibility for recording and maintaining maritime heritage.

Teaching English to Chinese Students
This book shares a narrative inquiry study that explores the voices of Chinese students and unveils how they understand their study of English for Academic Purposes (EAP), as part of their higher education (HE) journey in the UK. The book foregrounds the neo-liberalisation of the university and considers visiting Chinese students in this commodified education space. While challenging common misperceptions of Chinese students that result in the negative labelling and homogenisation of this international student cohort, it links the discussion to aspects of Orientalism applied to East Asian students, reportedly still evident in Western universities today. For contextualisation purposes and the encouragement of a meaningful understanding of contemporary Chinese students, the book includes an exploration of Chinese Education Reforms. The core argument sees a need for an increasing understanding of contemporary Chinese students in the UK HE academic community in relation to social, historical and cultural considerations, in order to enhance their Western education experience.

The Meaning of Constructions
This Element offers a primer for the study of meaning in a Construction Grammar approach. It reviews the main principles of meaning shared across constructionist frameworks, including its ubiquity in grammatical structure, its usage-based formation, and its nature as the output of cognitive representations. It also reviews the importance given to meaning in construction-based explanations of sentence composition, innovative language use, and language change. Paradoxically, the Element shows that there is no systematic framework delineating the rich structure of constructional meaning, which has led to theoretical disagreements and inconsistencies. It therefore proposes an operational model of meaning for practitioners of Construction Grammar. It details the characteristics of a complex interface of semantic, pragmatic, and social meaning, and shows how this framework sheds light on recent theoretical issues. The Element concludes by considering ways in which this framework can be used for future descriptive and theoretical research questions.
The Correct Interpretations and English Translations of Tang Poems and Song Lyrical Poems - Accompanied with Calligraphy and Vernacular Chinese
This book provides concise and correct translations of several popular Tang poems (唐詩) and Song lyrical poems (宋詞), including those by Li Bai (李白, 701-762 AD), Bai Juyi (白居易,772-846 AD), Xue Ying (薛瑩, ?-? AD), Su Shi (蘇軾, 1037-1101 AD), Li Qingzhao (李清照, 1084 - 1151 AD), and Lu You (陸游, 1125-1210 AD). Annotated line-by-line translations are presented in neat and simple words that are easy to understand, with each line's true meaning revealed by extensive research. Vernacular Chinese translations are also given. In addition, every poem is accompanied by Chinese calligraphy to enhance readers' appreciation of traditional Chinese culture.Tang poems and Song lyrical poems are known for their elegant and straightforward language. Yet, Chinese interpretations often contain critical mistakes. Most English translations additionally suffer from excessive fancy language that is hard to follow. This book aims to fix all these maladies of arbitrariness, which is relatively common in both Eastern and Western academia.

The translation of Autism Spectrum Disorder within Spanish and English Children’s Literature
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2024 in the subject Interpreting / Translating, grade: 1st Class, University of Newcastle upon Tyne (School of Modern Languages ), course: Modern Languages, Translation and Interpreting, language: English, abstract: In a world built for neurotypical people, children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are often overlooked when it comes to literature, both within and outside of the English language. Initial research on the accessibility of diagnostic screening tools for autism in translation, revealed a concerning lack of attention to essential culturally specific contexts. This research initiated questioning regarding the accessibility of other fields of translation, which highlighted a gap in research relating to children's literature about ASD in translation. The aim of this dissertation is to analyse children's literature in translation about ASD and explore the ways in which it reframes cultural context to make it relevant for the target reader. This project will critically analyse approaches of translating literature accurately for the target audience, as well as highlight the increased need for non-verbal description often required when writing for people with ASD. This project adopts an analytic approach, performing a close text analysis on several literary sources including Spanish and English children's literature, and secondary sources. Comparative analyses of the source texts (ST) and target texts (TT) are undertaken using House's Functional-Pragmatic Model (2009), focusing on three primary research questions which have been answered by the end of the dissertation project. The objective of this study is to evaluate the success of cultural and linguistic aspects of preexisting translations, whilst examining the function of literature about autism for children. These findings indicate that a more detailed and genre-specific translation model is needed for texts about ASD, with a focus on the multimodal aspects of the tex

It brings together a group of experienced scholars to provide an overview of research and progress in three areas: heritage and community language education, ideologies of language and literacies, and language policy. The chapters cover a wide range of formal and informal learning spaces and address language policies and practices from the national to the local levels. The international appeal of Wiley's work is represented through the rich diversity of the contributing scholars and research contexts. With an emphasis on advancing scholarship and advocacy for language minoritized populations in the United States and around the world, this book will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in the fields of language education, language policy and sociolinguistics.
Diverse Critical Literacies
This book presents, discusses and explores questions around teachers' (mainstream teachers, student teachers, EAL teachers) conceptions of language and literacy practices as they seek to meet the educational needs of pupils from linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds. The book captures the voices of a range of educators from various educational contexts and has implications for the future of literacy education in both pre- and in-service teacher education programmes. Learning from indigenous epistemologies associated with marginalisation and inequity in school settings, the book allows the stories and experiences of multilingual pupils in predominantly monolingual classrooms to be understood, and to form the basis of a 'proposal for hope': a clear set of principles to underpin specific curricular and critical pedagogical approaches for authentically inclusive and socially just classrooms.
Punning in Odd or Elegant Constructions in Jeremiah
Ancient Near Eastern scribes from Egypt to Mesopotamia, including Israelite scribes of the Hebrew Bible, create infelicitous or symmetric elements in their textual production. By their form, these elements communicate beyond the textual and semantic levels for rhetorical and literary purposes. "Meta-textual semantics" is a widespread scribal device in the ancient world, and ancient audiences and exegetes (e.g., rabbinic, medieval Jewish and Christian exegetes, and Masoretes) properly appreciated it, but it is underappreciated in modern interpretations of the Hebrew Bible. Using Prov 1:1-7 as a paradigm, Josiah D. Peeler explores elements in Hebrew Jeremiah usually considered secondary because of their odd or well-formed nature, to demonstrate that they exemplify a contextual theme.
Teacher education for working in linguistically diverse classrooms
This volume presents studies on aspects of teacher education that prepare teachers for working in linguistically diverse classrooms and schools in five Nordic countries; Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. This twin focus (teacher education in linguistically diverse contexts; and Nordic perspectives) makes the volume unique in its field, and contributes to international discussions on how teacher education can prepare preservice and in-service teachers for working with linguistically diverse student groups. The volume includes contributions on: Teacher education policies, Teacher educators' perspectives on teacher education, and Pre-service teacher perspectives on teacher education. The ways in which teacher education prepares educators for working with newcomers and multilingual students has attracted considerable attention in recent years. This reflects the increasingly linguistically diverse nature of classrooms that teachers around the world meet, that is in turn, a direct result of intensified globalisation and transnational migration. Clearly, teacher education is crucial for successful implementation of educational provisions for multilingual students. Teacher knowledge, gained partly through teacher education, plays a central role in creating educational environments where multilingual students can thrive. This volume focuses specifically on teacher education in a Nordic context, a region traditionally associated with progressive approaches in education based on principles of inclusivity, social justice and equal opportunity. In the twenty-first century, most Nordic countries have experienced increasing levels of migration. While neither multilingualism nor transnational migration are new phenomena in the region, geographical and social factors, as well as the ways humans communicate have helped make multilingualism more visible in the twenty-first century. Schools in the Nordic countries have had to act quickly and think flexibly to me

Sixty years of Swedish computational lexicography
Swedish computational lexicography has a long history at the University of Gothenburg, both in its primary role as a central aspect of the scientific study of vocabulary and also as an infrastructural component for conducting research based on language data. Starting in the 1960s, the Spr疇kdata research group pioneered corpus-supported lexicography for Swedish, forming the basis for successive editions of two main descriptive dictionaries of contemporary Swedish, SAOL and SO. Language technological lexical resources for Swedish have been developed by the research unit/research infrastructure Spr疇kbanken Text since the turn of the millennium, most recently in the framework of the Swedish FrameNet++ initiative. After two decades of separation, these two largely mutually independently developed strands of computational lexicography have now joined forces under the umbrella of Spr疇kbanken's lexical research infrastructure to advance the field technically, methodologically, and scientifically. The result is a vibrant and multifaceted research environment intertwined with and supported by a closely integrated cutting-edge computational infrastructure for working with lexical data
Libraries Driving Education for Sustainable Development
The book refers to the UNESCO's ESD for 2030 education program. Libraries, especially green and sustainable libraries, deserve prominent recognition as learning institutions and active driving partners for Education for Sustainable Development and which support their governments' sustainability efforts. Ranging from typological perspectives on grammatical structures to individual case studies, the volume sheds light on the complex processes underlying linguistic diversity worldwide.
More Than (Just) Words
This edited collection illuminates the mechanisms involved in courtroom reality construction and the ways in which trial narratives are created and legal facts established. It covers a wide range of jurisdictions and legal procedures spanning five continents. In addition to explaining how courtroom actors utilise words to craft their narratives within institutional constraints, it draws attention to the effect the gestural, visual and material resources have on the discursive shaping of the judicial process. The book highlights the intersection of legal and non-legal perspectives in judicial and related settings: those of judges, prosecutors, attorneys, complainants, lay witnesses, forensic experts, witness intermediaries and jurors. Going beyond (just) words, the volume elucidates the processes of meaning-making and the discourse practices which underlie asymmetrical interaction in judicial settings. Informed by diverse theoretical frameworks, the book will appeal to legal linguists and discourse analysts studying institutional communication, as well as legal practitioners engaged in trial practice.

Bookish Words & Their Surprising Stories
Travel through time with words that have shaped the trajectory of the English language across centuries. The world of books has played a striking role in the history of English vocabulary. "Book" itself is one of the oldest words in the language, originating from "boc" in Old English, and appears in many commonly used expressions today, including by the book, bring to book, and bookworm, to name a few. With the arrival of printing and typesetting, and the development of the newspaper industry came terminology that birthed commonly used phrases such as "stop the press," "front-page news," and "hit the headlines." The emergence of the internet generated even more. This anthology presents a selection of more than one hundred words that show the influence of writing, reading, and publishing books on our everyday vocabulary over the centuries, telling the stories behind their linguistic origins and uncovering some surprising twists in the development of their meaning through time.
Pen Names
Your favorite author may not be who they say they are. The stories behind why an author chose their literary alias can be just as compelling as the works that they wrote. Writers publish under pen names for a variety of reasons. Some use them to fit in while others employ them to stand out from the crowd. Pen Names traces the history of literary aliases from the nineteenth century to the present day through forty novelists, poets, and playwrights. These include famous pseudonymous writers such as George Eliot (Mary Anne Evans), Currer Bell (Charlotte Bront禱), Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson), George Orwell (Eric Blair), crime writers such as Josephine Tey and Nicci French, and those lesser-known writers whose real identities have been obscured behind their literary aliases. Pen Names also explores the wide range of motivations for taking on new names, including gender, the use of pseudonyms for different genres, and writing as a team. Collectively, the stories in this book give the audience unusual insights into authors, publishers, and readers over the last two hundred years.

Dynamics of L2 Sociolinguistic Development in Adulthood
This book constitutes a holistic study of sociolinguistic development among adult second language (L2) learners in a naturalistic setting. Combining results from a cross-sectional and longitudinal micro-development study, it examines the acquisition of both the productive and interpretive skills necessary to engage with the contextually sensitive use of vernacularity in Austria. The studies focus on issues of inter- and intra-individual variation and aim to shed much-needed light on why L2 learners acquire sociolinguistic variation, which aspects of it they acquire, which factors influence it and when they acquire it. Drawing on methodological and theoretical frameworks from diverse fields such as developmental and cognitive psychology, psycho- and sociolinguistics, as well as second language acquisition, the book connects topics rarely found in the same empirical piece, including the role of cognitive functioning and socioaffective factors, the temporal specificity of L2 sociolinguistic development in production and perception, and the issue of group-to-individual generalizability. The studies showcased in this work provide ample evidence that late starters of a L2 in early adulthood and midlife can acquire the skills necessary to successfully navigate the complex sociolinguistic variation within the target-language community, but the process is certainly not one without hurdles.
Translingual Creative Writing Theory, Practice, and Pedagogy
In a challenge to monolingual, Anglophone dominated creative writing workshops, this book explores why and how students' multilingual backgrounds and lack of fluency with the English language can emerge as assets rather than impediments to artistry and creativity.Grounded in the Chinese tradition of Daoism as an ongoing discourse, this exploration uses rigorous academic readings of the philosophical text, the Zhuangzi, as an analytical framework and takes a translingual approach to writing where translation and composition intersect, inscribing one language upon another within a single text. With concepts that resist expression such as inspiration, uncertainty, non-knowing, spontaneity, unity, forgetting the self, and the perfection behind the imperfection of language, Jennifer Quist demonstrates how Daoism's theories and metalanguage can re-imagine creative writing education whilst de-naturalizing the authority of English and Euro-American literary traditions. With analytical lenses derived from East Asia given context through translations of Chinese educators' primary accounts of the history and theory of postsecondary creative writing education in 21st-century China, Quist develops a method for examining the practices of exemplary translingual writers from China, Japan, and their diasporas. Featuring translingual writing prompts and practices for individual or classroom use by students at all levels of multilingualism, Translingual Creative Writing Theory, Practice, and Pedagogy opens up the current workshop model and discloses the possibilities of linguistic transcendence for instructors and students. With writing strategies based in cross-cultural collaboration and balanced with de-Anglicization of creative writing pedagogy, this book calls to rework the structures, methods, and metaphors of the workshop and presents ideas for more collaborative, collective, equitable, diverse, and inclusive programs.
