What is a live performance? And why is semiotics the best approach for the analysis and interpretation of the performing arts? Drawing on semiotic developments of the past five decades, this book introduces students to the semiotic analysis of live performances and provides them with a clear method for untangling the multimodal complexity of performance from the spectator's point of view. Presenting live performances as two-way communication processes, social events, and cognitive and affective experiences, each chapter of this highly accessible book begins first with an overview of the basics. How do language learners interact with those who already speak the language they are learning? It is more than just a question of learning vocabulary and grammars - learners also need to learn how to put together conversations in their new language and to vary the way they interact across different contexts. This book shows, using millions of words of data, how this happens. It is the first large scale, corpus-based exploration of the discourse macro-structures in conversational interaction between L1 and L2 speakers, and explores three corpora to show, in spoken interaction with L1 speakers across a range of tasks, the dynamics of discourse construction. Considering factors including cultural background, task and proficiency, it characterises the repertoire of discourse functions used in these interactions and shows how they vary according to a range of variables. Ainu of Japan Resisting the Suppression of Languages
This volume shows that, by moving away from code models that foster restrictive perceptions of language as learned words and rules, and towards an ecolinguistics capable of integrating with concepts of embodied cognition, it is possible to recognise a broad range of connections with a language from which an individual or community has become estranged.Using the Ainu of Japan as an example and comparator, this book reviews historical and contemporary suppression of languages as a means of, or as a bi-product of, the suppression of their speakers. Preservation of the Ainu language, which had no written form, has been central to official culture promotion programs, but the language has steadily declined in use. The Ainu experience has much in common with that of communities taken over and suppressed by oppressive forces in other countries and spans rural and urban contexts. Susan Samata examines the historical, social and ecolinguistic contexts of Ainu, with particular emphasis on presentation and perception in daily life. She also considers how aspects of ecolinguistic theory may be mapped onto museum practices, television and cinema, popular literature, and the promotion of tourism. These are then compared to the sociolinguistic situations of a selection of other languages and cultures in China, North America and Scandinavia. By highlighting points of similarity and dissimilarity, Samata demonstrates the factors that operate in the suppression of people and their languages and suggests ways in which the perspective described may support resistance to suppression and assimilation, not least in language teaching areas.

Pre-Columbian Cuscatlean Literature
*Cuscatl獺n*, "land of prizes" or "place of treasures"; that is the meaning of one of the almost fifteen hundred toponyms that are still preserved in El Salvador. To study these toponymies and organize them in a novel way was the objective of a thesis presented by F矇lix Montano and Mario Ramos to obtain a degree in Literature from the UCA. The fundamental motivation for this thesis was based on a simple fact: it is practically impossible to study the literature that existed in Salvadoran territory before the arrival of the Spaniards. There are no codices as in the cases of Mexico and Guatemala, and the oral tradition collects only a very deformed part of what was or what could have been that literature. For this reason, the study of Salvadoran literature in the pre-Columbian period was approached in a novel way. The country, El Salvador, is plagued with toponyms. Wherever our Pipil, Lenca, Chort穩s, Mames and Ul繳as ancestors settled, they identified the places with striking names. Why not consider, then, that the entire map of El Salvador was like a great codex, a great book full of signs, of images: of writings, in short?

Ireland gave Clancy another home and the confidence to write a terrific novel, Blind Pilot, and become a successful magazine writer.Daring, adventuresome, yes, but the reality for freelance writers was forever defined by the American humorist and journalist Robert Benchley, who noted that the freelancer is one "who is paid per piece, or per word, or perhaps."...Other places represented here in significant numbers are New York City and Long Island. In the second third of the 17th century, Racine devoted himself to the theatrical genre of tragedy, and more specifically, to the psychological study of his heroes. Racine's tragedies are of fundamental interest for their meticulous study of characters, reflecting their emotional and affective state as they act out their roles. In this respect, the stylistic approach based on multiple interpretations of the gaze is of major importance in highlighting the psychology and actions of the heroes that lead to tragedy. Racine draws on the lexical repertoire of pastoral and neo-Platonic vocabulary for the gaze, but gives it new meaning. On the one hand, the heroes' gaze remains dazzled and immobilized before the being that fascinates it, seeking communication in order to assert its presence. On the other, feelings arise from the hearts of the characters, who remain dominated by their desires. Finally, the spirit intervenes to question the profound nature of the upheaval the beings are undergoing.

Reduction and Unification in Natural Language Ontology
Semantic theories for natural language assume many different kinds of objects, including (among many others) individuals, properties, events, degrees, and kinds. Formal type-theoretic semantics tames this 'zoo' of objects by assuming only a small number of ontologically primitive categories and by obtaining the objects of all other categories through constructions out of these primitives. This Element surveys arguments for this reduction of semantic categories. It compares the ontological commitments of different such reductions and establishes relations between competing foundational semantic ontologies. In doing so, it yields insights into the requirements on minimal semantic ontologies for natural language and the challenges for semantic ontology engineering.
Investigating Plagiarism in Second Language Writing
This Element aims to provide a comprehensive and in-depth exploration of the issue of plagiarism in second language writing. It first outlines the importance of plagiarism as a real-world issue cutting across educational and cultural contexts and touches upon several prominent controversies over the issue. Then the Element defines and conceptualises plagiarism by critically examining the diverse extant definitions and discussing various discourses on plagiarism. Following that, it explores L2 students' perceptions of and stances on plagiarism, and identifies factors that contribute to L2 students' plagiarism. Informed by the current theoretical and empirical research, the Element critically evaluates three major approaches to dealing with plagiarism and, based on the critical evaluation, proposes pedagogical activities and strategies for fostering L2 students' intertextual competence. Finally, the Element calls for a reconceptualisation of plagiarism that embraces a multidimensional approach to dealing with plagiarism in second language writing, and outlines directions for further research.
