Intentions in Comedy Discourse presents a systematic pragmatic analysis of stand-up comedy. Drawing on previous literature on humour, socio-cognitive pragmatics, interactional sociolinguistics, storytelling, and media discourse analysis, the author proposes a theoretical perspective on comedy discourse that interrogates the way stand-up performers entextualise culture and society to instantiate situated actions with interactional, textual or social functions. The book addresses how we can objectively move from stand-up jokes to how humorous discourse does things in the real world, either in interacting with audiences or in creating heightened socio-political consciousness in them.

Deconstructing Reality in Blindness and Slaughterhouse-Five
This book examines how Blindness by Jos矇 Saramago and Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut use alternative realities as a means of escape from a disordered world. In each novel, characters seek refuge from suffering by entering states that detach them from their grim surroundings. The concept of "ecstasy," rooted in the Greek term "ekstasis," or "standing outside oneself," connects both narratives, as protagonists move between harsh physical realities and imagined, more bearable worlds. In Slaughterhouse-Five, Billy Pilgrim mentally transports to the planet Tralfamadore to escape the traumas of war, while the characters in Blindness experience an epidemic that forces them into confinement, echoing Plato's Cave Allegory as they struggle with their sense of reality. Despite their journeys into alternative worlds, the characters ultimately realize that true escape is impossible; instead, they gain insight into life's hardships. This analysis reveals how creating alternative realities is only a step toward understanding and navigating real-life suffering.
The Construction of Female Characters in Immigration Novels from Rio Grande do Sul
This work analyses the construction of the characters Frida (Frida Meyer - 1924) and Lore (A River imitates the Rhine - 1939) from the perspective of cultural gender studies, establishing relationships between fictional and historical discourses. The approach seeks to highlight the discursive resources used by the narrators, which allowed them to create a portrait of the Germanic woman who represented the process of immigration and colonisation in Rio Grande do Sul.

This Elements monograph presents a Cognitive Grammar (CG) approach to a range of signed language grammatical phenomena. It begins with a background on the history of sign linguistics, focusing on what was a widely-held belief that signs are simply gestures. The first section traces the modern linguistic examination of signed languages, focusing on Stokoe and his demonstration that these languages exhibit phonology and duality of patterning. This book combines studies of a broad range of minority and minoritized languages from the past and present to examine the dynamics of changes in the status of language use and language perception. A comparative dialogue analysis
At the limits of human life there is a question that concerns psychology, which refers to the act of leaving life voluntarily. Suicide is one of the ways of dealing with suffering and the world as it has been since the dawn of time, also known sociologically as a social fact. With this in mind, the problem of this research revolved around analysing two cases of suicide ideation due to homicide committed by the suicidal individuals themselves. The general aim of this research was to problematise the relationship between suicide, homicide and the motivations behind the former happening as a result of the latter. To this end, the theme of suicide was chosen, for which a corpus was constructed consisting of two works that are classics of Universal Literature, namely The Stranger (Camus) and Crime and Punishment (Dostoevsky), which feature protagonists involved in homicide who spend part of their lives contemplating suicide as an alternative to their suffering caused by the crime. The research was based on Psychology and Psychoanalysis, specifically Freud (2006 [1915]), for whom suicide is a dangerous tendency of melancholy.

Indications of Authorship and Identity Marks in Enem's 'Nota Mil' Texts
Since 1998, Enem has established itself as one of the main instruments for assessing not only basic education, but also candidates seeking university entrance. One of these assessments concerns the level of proficiency in reading and writing, skills that Enem assesses when it asks you to write an essay. One of the criteria included in the exam's assessment matrix refers to the candidate's authorial investment. Therefore, the student's ability to exercise authorship in the essay, positioning themselves in relation to the proposed theme, is assessed. After all, the text instantiates the candidate's place of saying and reflects their convictions about the world and culture, in an enunciative space in which, despite the artificial nature of the production context, they claim to be the author. This work is based on the concepts of authorship elucidated by Michel Foucault, Roland Barthes, Mikhail Bakhtin and other authors such as the Brazilian Sirio Possenti and his notion of signs of authorship. These notions contributed to the construction of a specific assessment matrix whose criteria serve to investigate the authorial and identity marks left in the text by the candidate.

This book explores the ways in which the protagonist Jane Eyre challenges and overthrows patriarchal forces by asserting her own in Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre. The major purpose is to find Jane's ability to move from one social class to another by overcoming male's pressure and social temptation towards her self-fulfillment. To achieve this goal, the study employs Virginia Woolf's feminist perspective to analyse Jane's struggle along her journeys to reach freedom and financial autonomy in Victorian society. The outcome is that Jane has been able to break through her domestic role and shape her own destiny in the society thanks to subversionary acts, her feminist ideologies as well as her participation in social work of the time.

They deserve attention for the highly unorthodox approach Gao adopted and the substantial alterations he made to the original texts. The study begins by narrating the circumstances that led to these translations, then goes on to explore Gao's views on translation, his style, additions to the original accounts, and the affective dynamics of his translation activity. The author draws on concepts from sociology, memory studies, and sociolinguistics to frame the discussion and highlight the ethical concerns inevitably involved in Gao's work. Without minimizing the moral responsibility of faithful transmission that Holocaust material should always impose, the author wants to show how Gao sometimes sacrifices strict accuracy in his desire to make the survivors' experiences intelligible to a prospective audience wholly unacquainted with the Holocaust.
Co-Constructing Intercultural Space
Current debates on intercultural communication often align with critical approaches. However, in the fields of cultural linguistics and intercultural pragmatics, significant strides have been made towards a dynamic and sociocognitive framework for understanding intercultures. Drawing from these concepts, this book proposes a fine-grained analysis to elucidate the active co-construction of intercultural space in situ, encompassing verbal, corporal-gestural, and prosodic dimensions. This empirical contribution fills a notable gap in the burgeoning interface between cognition, interaction, and embodiment, shedding light on a critical intercultural facet that has hitherto remained underexplored.

Winner of the BCALA 2025 Literary Award for Outstanding Contribution to Publishing As Dr. Josey and Ms. DeLoach wrote in their Introduction to the second edition of The Handbook of Black Librarianship: "In designing the second edition of The Handbook of Black Librarianship, the editors felt that this work should be a reference tool related to the various aspects of African Americans in librarianship and their work in libraries." Editing Archipelagic Shakespeare
Editing Archipelagic Shakespeare is a study of the power of names; more specifically, it is about the power of naming, asking who gets to choose names, for what reason, and to what effect. Shakespeare assigns names to over 1,200 characters and countless more sites and places, and these names, or versions of these names, have become familiar to generations of playgoers and play-readers. And because of their familiarity, Shakespeare's names, most frequently anglicized versions of non-English names, have been accepted and repeated without further consideration. Approaching names from an archipelagic perspective, and focusing upon how Irish, Scottish, and Welsh characters and places are written by Shakespeare and treated by editors, this Element offers an expansive, and far-reaching, case study for non-anglophone and global studies of Shakespeare, textual scholarship, and early modern drama.
Intercultural Communication in Virtual Exchange
Virtual exchange is an educational approach that uses technology to bring together people from geographically and/or culturally distant locations in sustained online interactions, often intended to develop their intercultural awareness and understanding. Though the practice has existed for several decades, it has gained popularity in recent years, in part due to the recent Covid-19 pandemic and recourse to online tools for international and intercultural learning. This Element explores intercultural communication in virtual exchange by looking at how and why culture is made relevant in the pedagogical design and framing of virtual exchanges and what impact this might have on student positioning, power dynamics, and on intercultural learning. From this framework three broad approaches are outlined, which are defined as comparative, challenge-based, and dialogue-based. Each approach is explored through examples and the opportunities, limitations, and risks for intercultural learning.
Discourse and Ideologies of the Radical Right
There has been much scholarly attention for the radical right, especially in political science. Unfortunately, this research pays less attention to the discourse of the radical right, a topic especially studied by scholars in discourse studies. Especially lacking in this research in various disciplines is a theoretically based analysis of ideology. This Element first summarizes the authors theory of ideology and extends it with a new element needed to account for the ideological clusters of political parties. Then a systematic analysis is presented of the discourses and ideologies of radical right parties in Chile, Spain, the Netherlands and Sweden. From a comparative perspective it is concluded that radical right discourse and ideologies adapt to the economic, cultural, sociopolitical and historical contexts of each country.

Notes on Poetry
Notes on Poetry was put together as a teaching aid meant for my second and third year students studying English and American literature. It consists of ten chapters each built on one of my favorite poems utilized here as sample texts for analysis. My objective was to illustrate different ways of approaching and analyzing poetic texts, and to offer students the necessary theoretical knowledge and terminology to do so. The most important goal, however, is to encourage students to read poetry and also to try their hand at writing analytic studies.

What role do books have in children's lives? How do libraries and librarians help foster a lifelong love of reading? Librarian and activist Genevi癡ve Patte addresses the questions in Let Them Have Books: A Mission to Read, a classic among French librarians that is now available for the first time in English. A staunch advocate for the rights of all children to have access to libraries, Patte recounts her experiences as a pioneering librarian who helped to establish the concept of children's libraries in France as well as internationally.Genevi癡ve Patte's experience in the United States as a Fulbright scholar in the 1950s and travels throughout the world have confirmed her dedication to creating the library as a welcoming place, particularly for immigrants and children from marginalized communities. Patte is currently the director of "La Biblioth癡que Ronde" in the working-class Parisian suburb of Clamart. Her translations include memoirs, novels, short stories, and literary essays, and her work has been recognized by the American Literary Translators Association and PEN America. She holds an MFA in Literary Translation from the University of Iowa and a PhD in Comparative Literature from UC Santa Barbara. She lived in Paris for two years conducting doctoral research that she's currently using to write a literary biography of the 17th-century author Marie-Catherine d'Aulnoy.
The Poetics of the Name
Bunin's many observations about the original name system in the stories show the need for a purposeful and generalizing study of the name system in the writer's work not only from a linguistic point of view, but also in relation to entering deep layers. modeling the author's poetics, his historical, religious, literary-aesthetic and social-political views. As a result of the work, we came to the conclusion that the proper name in Bunin's prose, first of all, has the ability to attract and harmonize the formal and meaningful elements of the literary text within the text in a certain way, thereby creating new content. Bunin's work opens the way to the widest cultural field, saturates the author's text with intertexts, thereby creating new meanings.
Once upon a time in 1889
This paper analyses the text 'Pequena Hist籀ria da Rep繳blica' (Little History of the Republic), by Graciliano Ramos, which is part of the book Alexandre e outros Her籀is (Alexander and Other Heroes), considered to be aimed at children and young adults and little discussed by Brazilian literary critics. In this way, a more in-depth analysis is made, presenting the text as a literary artefact in relation to historiographical discourse. Although it is also commonly treated as a historical chronicle or a satire on Brazilian historiography, it cannot be ignored that the selection and composition of the narrative was carried out by a distinguished writer, capable of transforming varied issues and aspects of Brazilian society into literary material. The text is therefore approached as a literary discourse of critical reflection on the formation of the republic in Brazil, taking into account the relationship between history and literature from the perspective of sociological criticism. In addition, we investigate the structural components of the work and how they contribute to the construction of a re-presentation of the Brazilian republican period through a critical look at historical discourses.
