Aşk, Love, Amour
There was a rumor that there are over 250 words and phrases of love in Turkish which is comprised of Farsi and Arabic. This region of civilization stretches back to 800 BCE and has influences that date even further back to the "Cradle of Civilization" where written language began.
A Critical Discourse Analysis of Violence Against Women
This book presents a critical analysis of the language surrounding Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG), demonstrating how discourse can both sustain harm and serve as a catalyst for healing and change. Grounded in Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), it examines the "DARVO" tactic--Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender (Freyd, 1997)--a manipulative strategy used by perpetrators to evade accountability, silence survivors, and reinforce a culture of victim-blaming. Through detailed case studies, the book uncovers the broader societal structures that enable and normalise these behaviours. To counteract these harmful dynamics, the author introduces the concept of "institutional courage" (Freyd, 1997), providing a framework for institutions to respond more effectively and empathetically to VAWG. Ultimately, the book advocates for a shift in both individual and institutional responses, urging a collective commitment to challenge DARVO and adopt institutional courage in the fight against VAWG. This work will be of particular interest to scholars, practitioners, and students across Linguistics, Women's and Gender Studies, Sociology, and Institutional Discourse.
Gesture
This book provides a short and accessible introduction to how we use gesture in communication. Gestures are those actions made with the human body that accompany spoken or signed language; they are found in every human community that has language, but are far more heavily context dependent than the linguistic elements of communication. In this book, Lauren Gawne explores the different categories of gesture, showing that their use varies across cultures and languages, and even across specific interactions. Further chapters cover the acquisition of gesture, where it lives in the brain, and its role in both the origins of language and the future of communication. Written in an engaging style and compact format, and suitable for readers for all backgrounds, the book demonstrates the importance of gesture in understanding how we communicate.
A Brief Review of the History of Literature and its Types
All people in all historical periods have been interested in and desired stories and poems that either describe their lives and tangible world or speak of dreams and legends. It said that literature also created from the very first day that man saw himself on earth. The history of literature may have begun with the stories and legends that cave dwellers told to their fellow men; however, many consider the Epic of Gilgamesh to be the first book of humankind. In any case, literature has undergone many changes and transformations from its beginning to the present day, when many literary types have become popular among people. This book has five chapters, including: Chapter I, History of Literature and Types of World Literature;Chapter II, Types of Iranian and World Fiction: History and Main Elements;Chapter III, Historical Literature: History and Main Elements;Chapter IV, Lyric Literature: History and Main Elements;Chapter V, Epic and Didactic Literature: History and Main Elements and References.
Language Policy
This book offers an accessible introduction to the main issues in language policy today, and to the origins and conceptual foundations of the relationship between language and the state. Florian Coulmas draws on specific examples from around the world to explore how countries make decisions about which language - and which variety or form of that language - should be used for key functions such as primary education, government administration, and the law. The book provides historical background to shed light on present-day policy disputes concerning language, and looks at how the resulting decisions are implemented in schools and other institutions. A common thread that runs through the chapters is the question of whether the involvement of the government in language regulation is a necessity, a blessing, or a curse. Written in a concise and engaging style, Language Policy: A Slim Guide is suitable for readers from all backgrounds who are interested in the interaction between language and politics.

Types and the Structure of Meaning
Addresses the role of structure in semantic analysis from the perspective of theories of meaning using rich theories of types. Also relates the theory of frames to these type theories as introducing, to some extent, similar structure into semantic analysis. The authors show how a structured approach is necessary to appropriately analyse phenomena in areas as diverse as lexical semantics and the semantics of attitudinal constructions referring to psychological states. In particular, these are: polysemy taken together with copredication, and attitudes such as belief and knowledge. The authors argue that the very same structure required to define a rich system of types enables them to adequately analyse both of these phenomena, thus revealing similarities in two otherwise apparently unrelated topics in semantics. They also argue that such theories facilitate a semantic theory oriented towards a psychological and contextually situated view of meaning. This title is also available as open access on Cambridge Core.

Multilingual Environmental Communications
Based on real-life case studies, this book provides an empirical study of the linguistic accessibility of environmental information for people from diverse language, cultural, and educational backgrounds. It deploys well-established statistical and machine learning models to evaluate the key linguistic features of environmental information dissemination, to both English and non-English-speaking readers, on topics such as environmental health risk and natural disaster preparedness. Using Japanese, Swahili, Tigrinya, Zulu, and Somali languages as illustrations, this book shows how English-speaking professionals can significantly improve the cross-lingual translatability of community-oriented environmental information by using machine learning. It can be used as a latest research reference for readers from different disciplinary backgrounds interested in how to design linguistically accessible environmental information to increase its social and community impact. It can also be used as a practical guidebook to community-oriented environmental information design.
Rhetorics of Refusal
Rhetorics of Refusal focuses on a recent public health crisis--Minnesota's 2017 measles outbreak--to recast vaccine refusals less as products of poor health literacy or disinformation and more as strategic and generative acts of noncompliance. The outbreak, which primarily affected unvaccinated Somali children, occurred at the nexus of declining vaccination rates, spiking autism concerns, antivaccination predation, and a fraying public health infrastructure. However, during a year-long ethnographic study at a Somali health center, Kari Campeau found that personal stories from parents offered a much different picture of vaccine refusal than the one painted by news media. Tracking refusals across four sites, Campeau argues for the importance of approaching refusals as rhetorical and participatory strategies that hold institutions accountable, press for change, and practice care within emergent biosocial communities. Moreover, she views refusal as necessary and potentially transformative in situations where refusers have little access to power or platform. By contextualizing refusals in longer cultural and political histories, Campeau unsettles traditional narratives of medical dissent while offering new entry points into discussions on racialized biopolitics, care, disability, and public health.

Racial Inequity in an Age of Interconnectedness
Academic Paper from the year 2020 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, University of Potsdam (Institut f羹r Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: Cultures of Violence, language: English, abstract: While it has already been established that police officers in the U.S. still discriminate against people of colour by enacting police brutality, thus enabling institutional racism to flourish, mainstream media contribute in a similar manner by perpetuating depictions of the criminal black male and with that supporting the idea of racial profiling. To make it easier for the reader to identify my stance, providing the necessary explanations for the terminology, as well as clarifying the historical context through which racism is enrooted in the history of the U.S. will guide the reader along the mass racial violence that will be discussed. In the main part, a thorough analysis of two incidents of police brutality, one being the case of Martin, the other one being Brown's case, shall be established. Finally yet importantly, examining the influence of media shall help to either justify or falsify my thesis on this matter, before I end with my conclusion.

The Future of Syntax
Proposing a new approach to the study of language, this book argues for the need to consider syntax in context and to engage with a wider variety of perspectives that better reflect the modern world and the changes to our language prompted by increased cultural diversity, the prevalence of social media, AI, and more. Referencing big data and drawing on a corpus of linguistic research, the book explores in particular the socio-pragmatic sensitivity and complexity within East Asian languages including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, offering new insights that step away from traditional approaches to formal syntax. In tracing the history of syntactic theory, it highlights the shifts in our communication as we adapt to technological developments, and focuses in particular on the significant advances in AI. Arguing that traditional syntactic theory is no longer in keeping with real life communication, Jieun Kiaer scrutinises current approaches and raises key questions about the need for a more appropriate grammar better suited to the diversity of human language.
Poetry and power
Dear Reader, The book you are holding in your hands is born of the emotions flowing from my heart, my deep love for poetry, and my profound respect for the unique literary legacy of Saida Zunnunova. My name is Uralova Gulmira Salim qizi, and I come from the Jizzakh region of Uzbekistan. I am currently a third-year student at Jizzakh State Pedagogical University. My passion for poetry led me to the verses of Saida Zunnunova. In each of her poems, one can feel the delicacy of femininity, the warmth of motherhood, the sorrows of humanity, and the universality of sincere emotions. These subtle and heartfelt expressions resonated deeply with me. Through her inner world, her emotional experiences, and the words that flowed from her heart, I not only discovered my own soul but also came to understand the true power of literature. This book is not merely a translation; it is a heartfelt tribute, written with love, and a humble gesture of reverence toward a poet whose work continues to inspire. With respect, Uralova Gulmira Salim qizi
Existentialism In Waiting For Godot And The Last Metaphor
This Philosophical book underscores the finding of the concept of absurdity under the theme of existentialism in both plays: Waiting for Godot (1952) by Samuel Beckett and The Last Metaphor (2014) by Usman Ali. Each work illustrates the elements of absurdity, however, that is found in the existentialist belief and the choices that we make are impudent. The explication highlights the commonality and parallel perception of underlining the humanistic aspects. The researcher showcases that the problem conferred in this paper is related to the term absurdity taken from Albert Camus's The Myth of Sisyphus (1955) and the comparative investigation of the subsequent concept of existentialism in both plays. The characters have been portrayed skillfully utilizing absurd edifice and elegance. This notion aims to examine the dissertation and existential principles under the concept of absurdity in Theatre of Absurd (1960). The researcher concludes that in the Theatre of Absurd, characters who are irrational and imprisoned in absurd conditions must live or rather fill up the time by committing nonsensical and irrational acts that are mainly present in their daily sequences.
Modern aspects of linguistic research of medical terminology
In this monograph, we analyze "Modern aspects of linguistic research of medical terminology." The study of the structure of the word and its division into root and affixal morphemes as the subject of morphological or morphemic analysis. Morphological word formation involves the creation of new words by changing the form of existing words using various formal devices according to certain word formation models.
Empirical issues in syntax and semantics

The result aims to be a snapshot of contemporary linguistic research in the areas of syntax and semantics. CSSP has always been committed to fostering research uniting empirical rigor with formal precision, while remaining open to newly emerging methodologies, and multiple theoretical approaches. This volume embodies that spirit, presenting work that collectively demonstrates how contemporary linguistic research can simultaneously respect empirical complexity and seek theoretical generalization.
Psychological and Social Aspects of Suicide Tragedy
This scholarly monograph, Psychological and Social Aspects Suicide Tragedy in English Literature, offers a comprehensive and methodologically grounded investigation into the representation of suicide as a multifaceted phenomenon within two distinct yet dialogically interconnected literary traditions. By drawing on a diverse corpus of texts-from canonical English works to emblematic Uzbek literary narratives-the study elucidates how suicide is constructed not only as a deeply personal and psychological experience but also as a socially mediated and culturally encoded act. It positions suicide within a complex matrix of literary aesthetics, sociocultural discourse, and human existential reflection. Interdisciplinary in scope, the research integrates perspectives from literary theory, psychology, sociology, and comparative cultural studies to examine the underlying causes, symbolic articulations, and ethical implications of suicidal behaviour as portrayed in literature. Through close textual analysis and critical interpretation, the monograph uncovers the psychological profiles of literary characters.

Guide to Phonetics
This comprehensive textbook explores the scientific study of speech sounds across nine major sections. Beginning with the fundamental principles of phonetic science, it examines the physiological mechanisms of speech production, including detailed coverage of the vocal tract anatomy and how it produces different sounds. The book thoroughly explores articulatory phonetics, detailing how consonants and vowels are formed through specific movements and positions of speech organs. It then transitions to acoustic phonetics, explaining how speech sounds can be analyzed as physical sound waves with distinct patterns of frequency, amplitude, and duration. The text also covers auditory phonetics, investigating how the human ear and brain perceive and process speech sounds. Practical transcription systems are presented, with special emphasis on the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and its applications.Applied sections demonstrate the practical uses of phonetic knowledge in language teaching, speech therapy, and forensic speaker identification.

Critical Approches to Language and Literature (Call 25)
Language and literature are more than mere tools of communication; they are vessels of culture, identity, power, and thought. Throughout history, scholars have sought to unravel the deeper meanings embedded in texts, exploring how language shapes reality and how literature reflects, challenges, and transforms human experience. Critical approaches to language and literature offer essential frameworks for understanding these complex interactions, revealing the ideological, historical, social, and psychological dimensions of textual production and interpretation. This book brings together diverse perspectives on the study of language and literature, engaging with a range of critical theories from structuralism and post-structuralism to feminist, postcolonial, and ecological critiques. It challenges conventional interpretations and encourages readers to view texts through multiple lenses, fostering a deeper appreciation of how meaning is constructed and contested. By examining literary works and linguistic structures through these critical approaches, scholars and students alike can gain insights into the ever-evolving relationship between language, literature, and society.
Rarities in phonetics and phonology
Rare phenomena play a key role in forming and challenging linguistic theory. This volume presents multi-faceted analyses of rarities in phonetics and phonology, from a wide variety of theoretical standpoints. Some contributions to the volume analyse language-specific rare features, placing them in a broader cross-linguistic context and looking at a sum of their phonological, phonetic, and evolutionary properties, at times also making connections to sociolinguistic factors. Others consider the same (or similar) phenomena from different analytical angles, with extensive cross-referencing, or take a broad analytical or typological stance towards rare phenomena and discuss what it means to be rare. The volume provides a nuanced picture of phonetic and phonological rarities in genealogically diverse languages, mostly lesser-studied, from around the globe. Authors were encouraged to attempt to strike a middle ground between radical exoticisation of the rarities at hand (describing them in idiosyncratic terms) and radical normalisation (underplaying the rarity of the phenomena at hand). Highly theory-specific or technical terminology is avoided or explained carefully, in order to make the book maximally accessible for a wide typologically-minded audience.
Word stress in prosodic theory
This book is composed of four studies that all investigate different aspects of word stress in Papuan Malay, an Austronesian language spoken in eastern Indonesia. These aspects, in order of presentation, include acoustic realisation, auditory perception, lexical analyses and word disambiguation. The introduction provides the theoretical background against which the studies are undertaken. All studies are empirical in nature; they either report acoustic analyses, production or perception experiments, or corpus-based analyses. Taken together, the results of all studies pose a challenge to maintaining a stressless analysis of Papuan Malay. At the same time, the type of word stress that emerges from the reported results is unlike its common theoretical conception and therefore requires more work to be integrated in prosodic theory. Given the controversy on word stress in Indonesian languages, the results are always discussed and carefully interpreted in a cross-linguistic context. In this way, the current thesis extends and deepens our knowledge and understanding of word stress in prosodic theory.

The Rocky Space
This book discusses the foundational factors for which the African postcolonial subject indulges in transnational displacement, verifying whether the purpose for their dislocation is often achieved. The conditions of the displaced postcolonial subjects in their transnational space and their responses to the new realities are zoomed in. One of the major issues handled in the novels of Isidore Okpewho's Call Me By My Rightful Name and The Victims and Buchi Emecheta's Kehinde and Second-Class Citizen is the question of gender consciousness and emancipation. They bring to the lamb light some of the difficulties female migrants encounter out of their homeland. Here, the difference between the sexes is socially and historically constructed with regard to disparity in workplace, as well as at the intellectual and symbolic spheres. Evidence of such an imbalance is imbedded in the gender discrimination persistently fought against by feminist movements, designed to challenge male supremacy.
Theories in Second Language Acquisition

Your Daughters Will Prophesy
How nineteenth-century women used the Bible to claim their voice on the moral questions of their day Caught between their identity as Christians and social norms that silenced them, American women used scripture to claim moral and then rhetorical agency. They reinterpreted familiar biblical passages, recovered previously ignored stories about women, and contested passages used to circumscribe women's activities. By strategically adopting a rhetorical posture of dissent, these women became prophetic voices in American society. In Your Daughters Will Prophesy, Lisa Marie Gring-Pemble and Martha Watson analyze the argumentative resources four women--Jarena Lee, Sarah Moore Grimk矇, Lucretia Coffin Mott, and Frances Willard--used to counter gendered restrictions and gain access to platform and pulpit, catalyzing what became known as the woman's movement.
Intensive language contact in the Caucasus
Tsova-Tush is an East Caucasian language spoken in one single village in Eastern Georgia by approximately 300 speakers. Since its early description, scholars have been intrigued by the high degree of linguistic influence from the Georgian language. This book has a threefold goal: (1) To contribute to the overall description of the Tsova-Tush language, by filling gaps in the previous literature in absence of a reference grammar. (2) To contrast Tsova-Tush constructions with functionally equivalent constructions in Chechen and Ingush, its closest relatives, and with Georgian, the language of wider communication which all Tsova-Tush speakers speak as a second language, in order to form hypotheses concerning which Tsova-Tush construction is inherited, and which has arisen under influence of Georgian. (3) To provide the most probable diachronic scenario of language contact, by looking at historical Tsova-Tush language data, as well as at its historical sociolinguistics. This book provides a basic description of Tsova-Tush, in particular in the domain of spatial cases (which exhibit a two-slot system similar to Daghestanian languages), TAME categories (indentifying a Iamitive and a Past Subjunctive developing indirect evidential semantics), complex verbs, and subordination and clause-chaining (which in Tsova-Tush is finite). In terms of language contact, this book concludes that (1) Tsova-Tush conforms to most established borrowing hierarchies and theories surrounding intensity of contact, except for the borrowing of a verbal inflection marker in a remarkably early stage of contact; (2) The Georgian influence that Tsova-Tush shows in sources from the 1850 suggest that a notable increase in bilingualism occured already at a point where there was little institutional or numeral dominance of surrounding the Georgian-language population. A change in ethnic self-identification can be the underlying factor for the early instances of contact-induced change.
